Along with the direction of her mother, retired Teacher, Sharon Wharwood, Drs. Green and Ivey saw a spark in Taryn that would lead her to develop a deep love for poetry. LoveReigns’ passion for people and words has afforded her opportunities to perform and advocate on the hills of Washington, DC, Canada and educational institutions from elementary to university levels. He and the other recipients were honored at the Savannah Heritage Festival (2017,2019). Jonathan has also played with his band, The Urban Intellectuals at the 2018 Jacksonville Jazz Festival. The Urban Intellectuals is built with the some of the finest musicians Florida has to offer. The phrase “Urban Intellectuals” derived from the phrase “Urban Renewal”, often criticized by the great James Baldwin, which was a tactic used in the 60s that relocated a majority of African Americans into what we now know as the projects. Those “urban” individuals that refused to just go with the flow and to enlighten their communities is what sparked the name: The Urban Intellectuals. Jonathan Baptiste and The Urban Intellectuals look to educate and inspire people through their music. The band endeavors to set a consistent example and be role models to inner city kids — showing them that they make music and be creative— no matter their skin color. Join us this week as we welcome the Americana band, Banjo Nickaru & Western Scooches. New York City's Banjo Nickaru & Western Scooches are likely the only band today infusing elements of Gullah-Geechee and world rhythms with folk traditions, Americana, New Orleans influences, and 1920s jazz. The forthcoming sophomore album, "Get Us Out Of Fearland", due June 15 2018, builds upon the multicultural exuberance that made the band’s debut album, "Very Next Thing", a transcendent breath of fresh air. Highlights of "Get Us Out Of Fearland" include the playful 1920s verve of “I Don’t Need No Glasses,” the warm lilting embrace of “I Wish The World Knew Why,” the organ-driven, gospel-tinged “Dandelion” (featuring special guest vocalists, Stephanie Rice and Charenee Wade), and “Soar,” an inspirational song filled with optimism, determination, and perseverance. The band members include: Nick Russo - guitar/banjo/resonator/composer/band leader, Betina Hershey - voice/guitar/composer, Emiliano Valerio - cajón/percussion, Miles Griffith - voice/composer, and Dr. David Pleasant - percussions. We will talk to them about their upcoming schedule, get a behind the scenes look at their music, feature their latest songs, and ask them to share their message for the troops. Please be sure to visit Banjo Nickaru & Western Scooches at http://banjonickaru.com/ and spread the word. And as always we will give shout outs to our deployed military listeners. Our message to the troops: WE do what we do, because YOU do what you do.

Black History Month 2018 was one for the books. We saw millions of fans celebrate #JanetJacksonAppreciationDay on Superbowl Sunday, Sade announce her first musical release in seven years for the Ava Duvernay-directed A Wrinkle In Time, the Obama presidential portraits unveiled, and The Golden State Warriors opt out of the traditional White House visit to instead take a group of students to the Smithsonian National Museum of African-American History and Culture. We even saw a Black Lives Matter flag raised over a high school in Vermont, and of course Black Panther burn up the box office, smashing records along the way. We spent the month honoring the past, present, and future of Blackness in Brooklyn. We got a lesson on jazz great Betty Carter’s legacy from some of her contemporaries and closest friends. We joined a book club that celebrates black literature and womanhood. And we followed a group of students from Brooklyn all the way to Wakanda. #BlackHistory, #BlackFuture, #BlackExcellence. Say it loud in Brooklyn, USA. ••• Brooklyn, USA is produced by Sachar Mathias and Emily Boghossian. Thanks to Gail Boyd, Ora Harris, Carmen Lundy, Marc Cary, Charenee Wade, Shannon Effinger and Kuye Youngblood for telling Betty Carter’s story, and to Keisha "TK" Dutes and the Bondfire Radio family for mixing the piece. LOTL The Comfort Zone  Welcomes , Soulful Jazz Vocalist CHARENEE WADE. Releases Her Interpretation of The Revolutionary Music of Gil Scott-Heron  & Brian Jackson ..Offering: The Music of Gil Scott-Heron and Brian Jackson . Charenee Wade is not one to hold back or let fear stand in her way. The first artist ever to enter two Thelonious Monk Vocal competitions, she walked away from the second one in 2010 with instant buzz and second place to her new friend Cecilé McLorin Salvant. Now is the time for Wade's star to rise. Known for expert vocal improvisational ability and her seriously swinging groove, Wade evokes a classic jazz sound akin to Betty Carter and Sarah Vaughan, two of her musical touchstones. With her Motéma debut, Offering: The Music of Gil Scott-Heron and Brian Jackson (June 23), she pays tribute to another inspiration, the socially conscious poet and musician Gil Scott-Heron, and confirms that she too plans to use her artist platform thoughtfully. The first full-length album tribute to Scott-Heron and his musical collaborator Brian Jackson by a woman artist, Offering is arresting in just how timely Scott-Heron's messages are today and how perfectly Wade delivers them through her savvy arrangements and intimate jazz interpretations. While she has earned many accolades – first runner-up in New York's Jazzmobile Vocal competition; a participant in Betty Carter's Jazz Ahead program; a feature on NPR's Song Travels; a starring role in the off-Broadway show Café Society and in Jazz at Lincoln Center's Salute to Betty Carter – she may surprise people with this authentic tour de force. Wade embodies Scott-Heron's poems deeply and with a pathos that belies her age.
