Interviews by Brainard Carey

Jammie Holmes in his Dallas studio, 2024. Photo by  Daisy Avalos Morning Thoughts takes its title from a 1981 Gil Scott-Heron song by the same name. Throughout the song's soft, spoken-word lyrics Scott-Heron meditates on the magical potential felt in the moment when night quietly turns to day—on the possibilities that radiate in the first light of morning, as the morning glory and daylily buds open. With his newest body of work, Holmes captures this moment of possibility alongside the inevitable moments of loss that follow as flowers wilt, as color seeps away—the dichotomy of morning and mourning. Underneath all of this,Morning Thoughts embodies the resilience of Holmes, of his community: morning glory and daylily flowers may wilt and die by dusk, but the plants and their roots remain. With Morning Thoughts, Holmes reminds us that hope and loss go hand-in-hand—but beauty remains for those willing to see it, that flowers bloom again in the morning. Jammie Holmes's first solo museum exhibition, Jammie Holmes: Make the Revolution Irresistible, was presented at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, TX in 2023. Com Will Jennings, escreveu três canções do Neville Bros. do Álbum Family Groove. Em outubro, Valentine gravou a maravilhosa obra de arte  "We Are the People Who Are Darker Than Blue", de Curtis Mayfield que está na playlist. Uma música com assinatura do War de 1972, “The World Is a Ghetto” dá sequencia. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/garimpandobolachas/message

In episode 37 I talk to Philly rapper lojii about his love for Gil Scott-Heron, an American soul and jazz poet, musician, and author, known primarily for his work as a spoken-word performer in the 1970s and 1980s. His collaborative efforts with musician Brian Jackson featured a musical fusion of jazz, blues, and soul, as well as lyrical content concerning social and political issues of the time, delivered in both rapping and melismatic vocal styles by Scott-Heron. His own term for himself was "bluesologist", which he defined as "a scientist who is concerned with the origin of the blues". His poem "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised", delivered over a jazz-soul beat, is considered a major influence on hip hop music.

Songwriters of the 70s took on Richard Nixon the best way they knew how: with their music. Blaming music for drug use, the Kent State shootings, Watergate, and getting a pardon for "any crimes he may have committed" were all issues that inspired artists such as Jefferson Airplane, CSNY, Gil Scott-Heron, Stevie Wonder, and David Bowie. This episode discusses how music reflected the dissatisfaction and outright anger with President Richard Nixon, even beyond his resignation in August 1974.

Jamie Byng from Canongate was a longtime friend and supporter of Scott-Heron. In this recording, Scott-Heron exudes a sense of comfort from performing in the company of friends, including the percussionist Larry McDonald. Canongate passed this recording to dublab for an exclusive broadcast in 2001. We’re happy to be able to share exerts from the performance again for this episode of In Conversation. Gil Scott-Heron, a seminal American musician, writer, and performer, began his career in the early 1970's with the albums Small Talk at 125th and Lenox and Pieces of a Man. He blended jazz, blues, political expression and spoken word to create a unique genre he called “bluesology.” Inspiring the generations that came after, his work is considered by many to be one of the forebears of rap and neo-soul. One of his most well known poems, The Revolution Will Not Be Televised, has entered into our collective imaginations becoming a touchstone in mainstream culture. In Conversation is produced by dublab. Sound editing, theme song and additional music for this episode by Matteah Baim. Due to rights reasons music from the original broadcast has been removed. The Context of White Supremacy hosts the seventh and final study session on Gil Scott-Heron's autobiography, The Last Holiday. A poet, author, musician and victim of White Supremacy, Scott-Heron died in 2011, one year before this text was published. He wrote and performed music that valued black lives and examined how the System of White Supremacy devastates black people. Legendary selections like "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised"  and "Whitey on the Moon" encourage many to credit Scott-Heron as being a hip-hop music pioneer. Last week's segment described how Scott-Heron joined Stevie Wonder for the 1980 "Hotter Than July Tour." Wonder used the concerts to boost momentum to establish a national holiday in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. There was a vague description of Stevie Wonder stopping the Boston show to discuss the city's history of terrorizing black people. This was the same time period when Ronald Reagan was selected president. Gil described shock and disbelief over Reagan's triumph that reminded several readers of the 2016 election of the current U.S. president. Drugs and alcohol seem constant throughout most of the book and Scott-Heron's life. This week, Gus recommends listers closely scrutinize the description of John Lennon's death. We'll contrast this memoir to other biographies we've covered on the book club - Maya Angelou, Assata Shakur, Malcolm X. He wrote and performed music that directly addressed black lives and how the System of White Supremacy brutalizes black people. Iconic selections like "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised" and "The Bottle" encourage many to credit Scott-Heron as being a hip-hop music founder. Last week's session explained Gil's growing success with Brian Jackson and the Midnight Band. He detailed his relationship with Clive Davis and Arista records - which garnered greater media attention for himself and the band. He again stressed the significance of black journalism - describing his tour of Johnson Publishing company and his respect for Gary Byrd's broadcast expertise. Substance abuse continues to have a critical role in Gil's life - he describes seeing black people consume large quantities of cannabis, cocaine, and liquor. We'll contrast this memoir to other biographies we've covered on the book club - Maya Angelou, Assata Shakur, Malcolm X. #AnswersForMiriamCarey INVEST in The COWS - http://paypal.me/GusTRenegade CALL IN NUMBER: 641.715.3640 CODE 564943#

The Context of White Supremacy hosts the 5th study session on Gil Scott-Heron's memoir, The Last Holiday. A poet, author, musician and victim of White Supremacy, Scott-Heron died in 2011. He wrote and performed music that explicitly discussed black lives and how the System of White Supremacy devastates black people. Legendary selections like "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised" encourage many to list Scott-Heron as one of the pioneer of hip-hop music. Last week's session explored Gil's leadership of a campus-wide boycott at Lincoln University regarding inadequate health facilities for the students. Gil mobilized black veterans and approximately six hundred HBCU students to forgo classes until the white president and administration vastly improved the school's medical resources. The biography discussed a sizable amount of alcohol and cannabis consumption by Gil and his friends; in fact, alcohol may have contributed to a potentially leathal car crash involving Gil and his friends. In his early 20's, Gil published multiple books and albums, obtained a college degree, and traveled the globe playing music that candidly addressed Racism. He wrote and performed music that explicitly addressed black lives and how the System of White Supremacy brutalizes black people. Iconic selections like "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised" and "White on the Moon" encourage many to list Scott-Heron as one of the founders of hip-hop music. Last week's session described how Gil's mother adjusted to being diabetic and how his mother's health scare made him leave his interview for the exclusive white high school in New York. Gil was accepted to the new school and declared that not one of students or faculty was Racist. He did take time to vividly detail a White instructor who hoped to have Scott-Heron tarred and feathered, or at least stuck with a week of detention, for playing "boogie woogie" music on the expensive school piano. After high school, Gil matriculated to Lincoln University, an HBCU in Pennsylvania. With a White president at the helm, the school became coed one year before Gil's 1967 freshman year. Gil said he was partly motivated to complete his first book, The Vulture, so that he could showoff to all his black classmates, friends and family members - corroborating Mr. Neely Fuller Jr.'s concern about the prevalence and worthlessness of showing off to other black people. The Context of White Supremacy hosts the 3rd study session on Gil Scott-Heron's memoir, The Last Holiday. A poet, author, musician and victim of Racism, Scott-Heron passed away in 2011. He composed an impressive body of music that directly addresses black lives and how the System of White Supremacy tortures black people. Iconic selections like "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised" encourage many to list Scott-Heron as one of the creators of rap/hip-hop music. Last week's session emphasized the many deaths Scott-Heron experienced as a child. His grandmother Lily Scott and Aunt Sissy died while he was a child in Tennessee. He was in school when President John F. Kennedy was killed. He also dealt with the trauma of being one of the first black children to be allowed to attend an all white school in his town. After Whites annihilated the black town in Tennessee by constructing a highway, Scott-Heron and his mother moved to New York. Once in the Big Apple, his mother advocated to get him the best education possible - her work included confronting Racist teachers who thought of her son as a Frankenstein. He branded Mississippi the most racist state, a place where he "felt Black and mistreated." 14-year-old Emmett Till and Medgar Evers were murdered while Scott-Heron was a Mississippi resident. He also described his "fair-skinned" grandmother Lily Scott who sassed Whites and highlighted the importance of education. Gilbert "Gil" Scott-Heron (April 1, 1949 – May 27, 2011) was an American soul and jazz poet, musician, and author, known primarily for his work as a spoken-word performer in the 1970s and 1980s. His collaborative efforts with musician Brian Jackson featured a musical fusion of jazz, blues, and soul, as well as lyrical content concerning social and political issues of the time, delivered in both rapping and melismatic vocal styles by Scott-Heron. His own term for himself was "bluesologist", which he defined as "a scientist who is concerned with the origin of the blues".His music, most notably on Pieces of a Man and Winter in America in the early 1970s, influenced and helped engender later African-American music genres such as hip hop and neo soul. In fact, Scott-Heron himself is considered by many to be the first rapper/MC ever, a recognition also shared by fellow American MC Coke La Rock.

One of the most important progenitors of rap music, Gil Scott-Heron's aggressive, no-nonsense street poetry inspired a legion of intelligent rappers while his engaging songwriting skills placed him square in the R&B charts later in his career, backed by increasingly contemporary production courtesy of Malcolm Cecil and Nile Rodgers (of Chic). Born in Chicago but transplanted to Tennessee for his early years, Scott-Heron spent most of his high-school years in the Bronx, where he learned firsthand many of the experiences that later made up his songwriting material. He had begun writing before reaching his teenage years, however, and completed his first volume of poetry at the age of 13. Though he attended college in Pennsylvania, he dropped out after one year to concentrate on his writing career and earned plaudits for his novel, The Vulture.

Releases Her Interpretation of The Revolutionary Music of Gil Scott-Heron  & Brian Jackson ..Offering: The Music of Gil Scott-Heron and Brian Jackson . Charenee Wade is not one to hold back or let fear stand in her way. The first artist ever to enter two Thelonious Monk Vocal competitions, she walked away from the second one in 2010 with instant buzz and second place to her new friend Cecilé McLorin Salvant. Now is the time for Wade's star to rise. Known for expert vocal improvisational ability and her seriously swinging groove, Wade evokes a classic jazz sound akin to Betty Carter and Sarah Vaughan, two of her musical touchstones. With her Motéma debut, Offering: The Music of Gil Scott-Heron and Brian Jackson (June 23), she pays tribute to another inspiration, the socially conscious poet and musician Gil Scott-Heron, and confirms that she too plans to use her artist platform thoughtfully. The first full-length album tribute to Scott-Heron and his musical collaborator Brian Jackson by a woman artist, Offering is arresting in just how timely Scott-Heron's messages are today and how perfectly Wade delivers them through her savvy arrangements and intimate jazz interpretations. While she has earned many accolades – first runner-up in New York's Jazzmobile Vocal competition; a participant in Betty Carter's Jazz Ahead program; a feature on NPR's Song Travels; a starring role in the off-Broadway show Café Society and in Jazz at Lincoln Center's Salute to Betty Carter – she may surprise people with this authentic tour de force. Wade embodies Scott-Heron's poems deeply and with a pathos that belies her age.

Marcus Garvey meets Gil Scott Heron Gil Scott-Heron was born in Chicago, Illinois. His mother, Bobbie Scott-Heron, was an opera singer who performed with the New York Oratorio Society. Scott-Heron's father, Gil Heron, nicknamed "The Black Arrow," was a Jamaican soccer player in the 1950s who became the first black athlete to play for the Glasgow Celtic Football Club. Gil's parents separated in his early childhood and he was sent to live with his maternal grandmother, Lillie Scott, in Jackson, Tennessee. When Scott-Heron was 12 years old, his grandmother died and he returned to live with his mother in the Bronx, New York City. He enrolled at DeWitt Clinton High School, but later transferred to The Fieldston School after impressing the head of the English department with one of his writings and earning a full scholarship. As one of five black students at the prestigious school, Scott-Heron was faced with alienation and a significant socioeconomic gap. Marcus Mosiah Garvey, Jr. was born in St. Ann's Bay, Jamaica to Marcus Mosiah Garvey, Sr., a mason, and Sarah Jane Richards, a domestic worker. Of eleven siblings, only Marcus, the youngest, and his sister Indiana survived until maturity. His family was financially stable given the circumstances of this time period. Therefore, Garvey's father could afford to maintain a large library, and it was from his father that Marcus gained his love for reading. He also attended the elementary schools in St. Ann's Bay during his youth. While attending these schools, Garvey first began to experience racism. When he was younger, he used to be friends and play with his white neighbors. However, when they reached their teenage years, they began to shun him.Sometime in 1900, Garvey entered into an apprenticeship with his uncle, Alfred Burrowes, who also had an extensive library, of which young Marcus made good use caribbeanradioshow@gmail.com 661-467-2407
