Hey There, Friends! This week we chat with our new cousin Marcus Johnson, an independent Billboard-ranked musician, NAACP Image Award nominee, owner of FLO Brands and FLO Wine, JD and MBA, philanthropist, father, friend... and so much more! What is FLO (For the Love Of)? It represents the journey through which we discover those things in life that fulfill us and make each experience a little better. For the love of life, self, happiness, passion, joy…love itself. While pursuing his JD and MBA at Georgetown, he independently produced and distributed his first CD (Lessons in Love), which sold more than 40,000 units; a phenomenal success for an unknown independent artist's debut release. This album helped him launch his career as a renowned jazz keyboardist/pianist, and later, he released his second CD (Inter Alia), with staggering success This success caught the attention of Black Entertainment Television (BET) founder and businessman Robert L. Johnson, who invested and partnered with Marcus to establish Marimelj Entertainment Group. Under their partnership, MEG's label Three Keys Music housed Studio 8121, a full-service recording studio, and two music publishing companies: Marimelj Music Publishing and Three Keys Music Publishing. As head of Three Keys Music, Johnson produced and released on the Three Keys Music label national jazz artists: Michael Lington, Jaared Arosemena, Bobby Lyle, Nick Colionne, R&B singer, Alyson Williams, neo-soul songstress, Zahzarah; and smooth jazz Saxophonists Phillip Martin and Brian Lenair. To date, Marcus has released more than fifteen Billboard charted CDs, and has the distinction of having his groundbreaking 2008 Billboard Top 20 Contemporary Jazz FLO (For the Love Of) Anthology, which consisted of three distinct CDs -- FLO Chill, FLO Romance and FLO Standards - all chart Top 10 on Billboard Contemporary Jazz Charts simultaneously. The release of Poetically Justified (2009) and This is How I Rock (2011), which were Top 20 Contemporary Jazz CDs, solidified Marcus Johnson as the heir apparent to the funky urban groove music style and sound made famous by legendary jazz greats, George Duke and Herbie Hancock. FLO Wines FLO {for the love of...} represents the journey through which we discover those things in life that fulfill us and make each experience a little better; for the love of life, self, happiness, passion, joy…love itself. FLO Wine is but one expression. Named a top 10 Celebrity Wine by USA Today. Marcus Johnson's Sips & Sounds are uniquely curated tasting experiences featuring sips from Flo Wine; varietals Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and our new Rosé, and Jazz sounds by Marcus Johnson with a special music set customized to the region/location we're in. The Sips + Sounds tasting experience strives to go “Behind the Apron” with collaborations highlighting diverse/minority-owned catering companies and/ or chefs that create exclusive culinary pairings with Flo Wine. ROSÉ The Rosé gives bright, floral aromas of lilac and rose petal with flavors of fresh strawberry and raspberry on the palate. It is light in body with refreshing acidity and a crisp, clean finish. CHARDONNAY The Chardonnay uses minimal oak, allowing the bright fruit to take center stage. Well-balanced, it offers Lemon and citrus notes with a hint of green apple. Flavors of tropical fruit, baked fig and vanilla with buttery overtones on the finish. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/therosehourpodcast/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/therosehourpodcast/support

Longtime R&B/soul singer, entrepreneur, and radio personality Alyson Williams unveils her latest release, the single “Summer Nights In Harlem." The veteran singer brings a jazzy, mature, grown-folks vibe to “Summer Nights In Harlem” as well as sweet sultriness to the accompanying “flip-side”, the ballad, “The Romance Of You”. It's the sound Ms. Williams has been known for, dating back to her years when she was the first R&B singer signed to Russell Simmons' Def Jam Records during the 1980's. “Producer Maurice Lynch was putting together a Harlem jazz review and was referred to me by a mutual friend,” says Alyson. “After we completed the show, he offered two songs for me to record - ‘Summer Nights In Harlem' and ‘The Romance Of You'. I loved both tunes and offered to cut them with top notch veterans in the music industry – keyboardist Ray Chew (musical director for ABC-TV's Dancing With The Stars), longtime sax man Kirk Whalum as well as Grammy Award winning bassist Christian McBride.” Alyson's “Summer Nights In Harlem” is available on Amazon, Spotify, Apple Music and Pandora. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/livewithjacquelinevaldez/support

Here's an excerpt from "The Hair Radio Morning Show" with special celebrity guest, Alyson Williams. She's known for the hit R&B song, "Just Call My Name" and now she's out with all-new music.
The latest episode features Alyson Williams discussing her illustrious recording career, upcoming projects, women rappers, and much more. In the late 80s, the Harlem singer became the first female R&B artist signed to the groundbreaking Def Jam rap label. Alyson’s first album, "Raw," garnered several top 5 singles, including slow jam favorite “Just Call My Name.” The album went on to spend over a year on the Billboard charts, met only by Madonna’s “Like a Prayer.” After leaving Def Jam, the daughter of trumpeter and bandleader Bobby Booker, moved to Columbia records (now Sony) and released her second album. The self-titled release nabbed two top ten hits – “Just My Luck” and “Can’t Have My Man.”Alyson would go on to release two more albums – in 2004 and 2010.Before success as a solo artist, she sang background for hitmakers including Melba Moore, Evelyn Champagne King, and Kurtis Blow. Yep, that was Alyson singing the hook on classic Kurtis Blow rap tracks – "Basketball" and "If I Ruled the World." In addition to a recording career, Alyson enjoyed acting and singing in musical reviews and stage plays both on and off Broadway in shows including “One Mo Time” and the “25th Anniversary Revival of the Wiz." She worked with actors/and singers Lynn Whitfield, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Carl Payne, The Whispers, and Eddie Levert of The O'Jays. Currently, Alyson has a lot on her plate – working on a new jazz album, an upcoming virtual show honoring her friend and gone-too-soon singer Phyliss Hyman (click here for ticket information), and a radio show on WHCR in New York. We’re talking about ‘Diabetes, Sleep & Mental Health Issues’ on Diabetes Late Nite with musical inspiration from the iconic Phyllis Hyman. Phyllis Hyman was a sensational singer-songwriter and actress. Deep-voiced and statuesque, Phyllis Hyman sang with a life-affirming energy and emotional intensity found in few other female vocalists. Unfortunately Phyllis Hyman committed suicide, leaving a suicide note behind in 1995. Part of the note read "I'm tired. I'm tired. Those of you that I love know who you are. May God bless you." It has been reported that she suffered from bi-polar disorder and depression and had a history of substance abuse which involved alcohol and cocaine. Who knows what accomplishments she would have achieved if she had lived longer? He received the Most Outstanding Musician of the Year award at the UNF School of Music. Jonathan is the 2018 Northeast Florida Jazz Association Jazz Scholarship Recipient. Jonathan is also a teacher at Jacksonville Arts and Music School. He is also a freelance musician, having played with the likes of 2x Grammy Award-winning Saxophonist Tivon Pennicott, Sofija Knezevic, Terry "Doc" Handy, Daniel D, Marcus Printup, Riza Printup, Nat Adderley, Jr., Jon Irabagon, Charenee Wade, Patrick Bartley, Jamison Ross, Fred Wesley, Alyson Williams, John Lumpkin and International Gospel Recording Artist, Lisa McClendon and others. He and the other recipients were honored at the Savannah Heritage Festival (2017,2019). Jonathan has also played with his band, The Urban Intellectuals at the 2018 Jacksonville Jazz Festival. The Urban Intellectuals is built with the some of the finest musicians Florida has to offer. The phrase “Urban Intellectuals” derived from the phrase “Urban Renewal”, often criticized by the great James Baldwin, which was a tactic used in the 60s that relocated a majority of African Americans into what we now know as the projects. Those “urban” individuals that refused to just go with the flow and to enlighten their communities is what sparked the name: The Urban Intellectuals. Jonathan Baptiste and The Urban Intellectuals look to educate and inspire people through their music. The band endeavors to set a consistent example and be role models to inner city kids — showing them that they make music and be creative— no matter their skin color. Earl Carter describes himself as a chameleon when it comes playing guitar. His "smooth" jazz sounds have shared the stage with Alyson Williams, Regina Belle, Angela Bofill, Bobby Lyle and Marcus Johnson - to name a few. Earl's career has taken him from management in "corporate" America, to being a successful full-time musician/entrepreneur. Enjoy this conversation with one of Washington DC's hardest working musicians.
A Philadelphia native, James began his musical training in church and attended the Philadelphia High School for Creative and Performing Arts, which produced other notable acts Bilal, Boyz II Men and The Roots. Studying both vocal performance and instrumental music, James excelled as a vocalist and musician before continuing his education at Temple University majoring in jazz performance and music technology. James quickly grabbed attention and acclaim from artists both within and outside of his hometown of Philadelphia. Lady Alma, Kindred the Family Soul, Bilal, Jazmine Sullivan, Kelis, Ray Chew, The Jazzyfatnastees, Camp Lo, Talib Kweli, Kelly Clarkson and Gerald Veasley have all shared the experience of James keeping time behind them. In 2009, James teamed with one of house music's biggest producers, Kenny Dope to release his first commercially available project, an EP titled "Money for Love". This was the first time that he took the spotlights as a vocalist, and set the ground for his self-produced debut album "Conversations in Analog, Vol. 1". This album covered the genres he was most known for: jazz, R&B/soul and house. In addition to being the drummer/programmer on the album, he also showcases himself vocally on the album-ending track "Freedom". In 2017, James and his band, The Buttered Biscuits, released his follow-up EP, "Biscuit Street" which features a re-interpretation of the Tears for Fears classic "Everybody Wants to Rule the World", and Alyson Williams on a cover of the Emotions classic "Don't Ask My Neighbor". The project is the most personal of any he's worked on for any artist, as it includes "Give It A Chance", the song he wrote to propose to his wife. Currently, James is touring as the musical director for Vivian Green and featured drummer for the Screaming Headless Torsos. He continually finds inspirations in both legends like Buddy Miles, Phil Collins and Earth, Wind & Fire, as well as contemporaries and friends Lil' John Roberts and Ahmir '?uestlove' Thompson. •••• The B-Side Podcast is produced by Charlie Hoxie, Kecia Cole, Ro Johnson and Sachar Mathias; recorded by Onel Mulet and Steve de Seve; and edited by Emily Boghossian and Khyriel Palmer. In this episode we speak with Marcus Johnson. Marcus is an independent Billboard-ranked musician and NAACP Image Award-nominated jazz keyboardist and pianist. He is also the CEO and Founder of Flo Brands, LLC and more recently Flo Wine, LLC. Marcus has combined an eminently successful musical career with his love of wine by marrying the two in a unique endeavor. Over the last decade, Marcus Johnson has released 15 successful studio albums. On Pandora, Marcus receives 5.1 million spins per year with 2,000 new stations added each month, and his music receives a 74% “thumbs ups” rating verses an average of 56%. Johnson is the owner of a music label, Three Keys Music, and has emerged as one of the young lions of the “DIY” music world. His unique self-taught style of piano play has earned him distinction among his peers, praise from the media and accolades across the music industry. Marcus is on the cutting edge of ‘Euro Jazz' having formed JURIS, a musical collaboration with acclaimed Parisian DJ and producer Young Pulse. The duo quickly developed a name within the international music community, enjoying large-scale performances and preparing a Q3 release of their latest project entitled “Eiffel Tower.” Johnson's FLO Brands, LLC,tm is aptly titledFor the Love Of ; LLC. ™ FLO began as a musical publishing, production, and lifestyle branding company to house all of Johnson's musical and entrepreneurial ventures. However the scope and reach of the company has expanded delving into winemaking, sourcing grapes and production in California. FLO Brands launched FLO Wines, LLC in March 2012. FLO Wine is capturing the taste buds of wine-lovers from California to South Carolina. To date retail partners in various states include Costco, Wal-Mart, Target, Whole Foods, Giant, Harris Teeter, Renaissance Hotels, Kroger, Aloft Hotels, Four Seasons Hotel Washington, DC, Farm Fresh, and Total Wine. As the owner and brand ambassador, a marketing initiative is currently underway with Johnson's “Sips & Sounds” performances marrying music and wineFor the Love Of concept. FLO Wine currently offers a FLO Red Californian Blend and a FLO California Chardonnay. As of July 2013 the company is launching its 2011 FLO California Moscato. A graduate of Howard University, Johnson went on to simultaneously earn both his MBA and Juris Doctorate degrees at Georgetown University. In 1995 during this demanding period at Georgetown, he also decided to independently produce and distribute his first jazz album, Lessons in Love, which sold more than 40,000 units, a major success for an unknown independent artist's debut release. One year later, he releasedInter Alia, with great acclaim. These two albums led to Johnson signing with N2K Encoded Music with whom he released several CDs until the label was sold in 1998. Johnson's success caught the attention of Black Entertainment Television (BET) founder and businessman Robert L. Johnson who invested in Marcus and his newfound company, Marimelj Entertainment Group (MEG). Under their partnership, MEG's label, Three Keys Music based in the Washington, DC metro area, established its own full service recording studio, Studio 8121; and two music publishing companies, Marimelj Music Publishing and Three Keys Music Publishing. Marcus was responsible for releasing and producing CDs on the Three Keys label for national jazz artists Michael Lington, Jaared Arosemena, Bobby Lyle, Nick Colionne, R&B singer, Alyson Williams and neo-soul songstress Yahzarah and smooth jazz Saxophonists Phillip Martin and Brian Lenair. While producing music for the aforementioned artists, Marcus also released several critically acclaimed albums:Inter Alia,Chocolate CityGroovin';Coming Back Around;Urban Groove,In Person: Live at Blues Alley,Just Doing What I Do,Smooth Jazz Christmas andIn Concert for a Cause, all charting at Top 20 or more on Billboard's Contemporary Jazz Charts. Marcus has released 15 Billboard-charted CDs. He has the distinction of having his groundbreaking 2008 Billboard Top 20 Contemporary Jazz FLO (For the Love Of) CDs which consisted of three distinct albums: FLO Chill,FLO Romance andFLO Standards , all charting Top 10 on Billboard Contemporary Jazz Charts simultaneously. Johnson's previous solo 2007 release, The Phoenix, was widely lauded by jazz critics and aficionados alike and like Johnson's previous CDs, it peaked in the Top 20 of Billboard's Contemporary Jazz charts. Johnson's next Top 20 Contemporary jazz releases, the unique and multi-facetedPoetically Justified (2009) andThis Is How I Rock (2011) solidified Marcus Johnson as heir apparent to the George Duke and Herbie Hancock style of funky urban groove music. Creatively, Johnson continues to evolve as an artist. With the release of his 2012FLO: Holiday CD and the ongoing collaboration with famed Parisian Producer DJ Pulse – as the musical duo “Juris” – he has managed to maintain his traditional jazz roots, while also remaining on the forefront of the expanding “Euro Jazz” movement. His music continues to enforce and define his musical legacy as a “jazz movement for all people”. Johnson is also evolving as an innovative wine expert. He resides in the Metropolitan Washington area and is a new father. His daughter Chase was born on September 12, 2012. Marcus is currently featured weekly on Fox News and is involved with community and charity events, including service on the Board of the Boys and Girls Club. Cool Million have become a solid rock in today's tumultuous barren musical desert. The sands shift very regularly. Everything is in flux. Yet Rob Hardt and Frank Ryle, who comprise Cool Million, stand unnerved and unwavering. The reason, dear reader, is very simple. These guys KNOW about music. They are not following trends, jumping on bandwagons or even trying to create a trend. Both well known and respected in the radio and song writing fields, these gentleman are simply creating real music with real feeling and doing so with all the knowledge, love and respect for what we can affectionately call the groove! Bursting onto the scene in 2007 with “Naughty Girl” that was featured on the popular Soul Togetherness series and then followed by the essential “Going Out Tonight” album soul fans and music connoisseurs all around the world have eagerly awaited new product, and various songs remixed by the legendary Tom Moulton on have whet our appetite ever since. The new album, the aptly titled “Back For More”, is here and boy are you going to love it! The bar has been raised, the gears shifted higher and the scene set for future greatness. These cats have laid down a series of party grooves with a seriously tasty guest list of soulful and funky vocalists to make you sit up and pay attention. Now, that's something a lot of today's R&B cannot do! The vibe is very much in an 80s setting, yet the sensibility is very much today. These boys understand the basics and know that great soul music is timeless...this is the Cool Million sound. Helping create their sound are a star-studded guest list Meli'sa Morgan has been a favourite of ours since she burst onto the scene with Alyson Williams and Erick McClinton as High Fashion. Her powerful, no-nonsense vocals grace the first lead single, “Sweet Baby”. Cool Million meet the As sassy and sexy as ever, Cool Million are a perfect match for her rip-roaring style. The wonderfully soulful Broomfield family are very much included on the album with Al Broomfield, Eugene Wilde and sister Dee Dee all gracing the songs “Loose”, “Back For More” all of which are going to become firm favourites on the quality modern soul scene. Cool Million have this knack of taking our favourite artists, giving them the groove that suits them, and to top it all drawing out and emphasising the best facets of that artist. The results are astounding and if in any doubt check out the killer duet “Loose”. Enough said! The UK's Noel McKoy is a point in fact. His smooth approach pitted against a slamming mid 80s Jam & Lewis type groove is simply sublime. Genius abounds on this CD. Yes, the album oozes class, and no-one is better to assist on this than Peggi Blu. Known for her 1980s sets for MCA and Capitol, and later Expansion in 2002, this Lady captivates us with the stylish and classy floater “I See You”. This will be a firm favourite on the quiet storm circuit for definite. The legendary Leroy Burgess woos us with “Cool Million”, his unique style perfect for the Cool Million sound, and helping to make today's music scene ever more vibrant and meaningful. The wonderful Rena Scott is also to be found with her sensuous yet boogie flavoured “Come 2 Me”. Newer names are also embraced and these artists fully carry the musical torch that is so important to the Cool Million ethos. The integrity of the past meets the talent of today and breeds hope for the future...and no-one can fault the brilliance of artists such as Jahah, Paul Mac Innes, Jeniqua, P.A.C.E., Laura Jackson, Yvonne Gage and Clare Evers. Combining the best vocal talents from all over the world, raising the musical bar and constantly setting the agenda and setting trends, Rob Hardt and Frank Ryle are set to dominate radio, dancefloors and CD players the world over. Years of experience, love for the music and creative skill are perfectly forged together in this CD project. We, as they, are definitely “Back For More”. Alyson Williams is a name that we all know, if we know anything at all about R&B and sexy vocals. Ms. Williams has had a string of hits, including but not limited to some hot dance tunes, but the one that always calls to me personally is "Just Call My Name", just thinking of that song and her delivery gives me chills! I've recently had the honor of seeing her perform in Harlem at the Apollo as well as in Philadelphia and when I tell you her voice is still outstanding and her performance is amazing, believe what I'm saying! Be sure to listen in as she talks about her career and what to expect from her in the new year!
Saxophonist Sam Rucker is set to release his new CD “Tell You Something” in June. Sam teams up with legendary producer Norman Connors, renowned pianist Bobby Lyle, sax great Euge Groove, Tom Browne, Alyson Williams and a host of other great musicians. “Tell You Something” features three soulful covers and eight of Sam’s original songs that not only entertain but encourage as well. This is contemporary jazz music with a message. Even as an instrumentalist, Sam’s music speaks to the listener and conveys an infectious positive energy.
