#787 - Carmen Lundy The Carmen Lundy Interview is featured on The Paul Leslie Hour. Are you here? I need you to be here. You are here right? Okay, because I also want you to be here, which is where you need to be to tune into The Paul Leslie Hour. You should know, The Paul Leslie Hour is an interview program now in our 19th year. That's a pretty okay length of time. We've got some great content, some of it was heard on the radio and other places and after that never to be heard again. Such is this interview you're about to hear, with Carmen Lundy, she's the real deal. Now, Carmen Lundy is a vocalist, songwriter and recording artist in the musical genre of jazz. Paul E. Leslie interviewed her around the time of Lundy's 15th album “Code Noir.” It's a record that includes Jazz, Blues, Pop and Brazilian Samba along with the full range of human emotions. The title of Carmen Lundy's album “Code Noir” actually refers to the first law ever written by a person in power of an empire, the King of France, Louis XIV, but there will be more about that in the interview. Now, it's something you may know already, but it's worth reminding you. The Paul Leslie Hour a show with a mission statement of helping people tell their stories, is dependent on people, too. You can be a patron of the spoken word and supporter of independent media by going to www.thepaulleslie.com/support And we thank you. I think the fair thing to do right now would be to start the show. I'm going to do that and there you are, asking me this question: Well, what's stopping you?” The Paul Leslie Hour is a talk show dedicated to “Helping People Tell Their Stories.” Some of the most iconic people of all time drop in to chat. Frequent topics include Arts, Entertainment and Culture.

Today's conversation is with jazz vocalist Grammy-nominated artist Carmen Lundy. It happened on my birthday, a gift I cherish! Conversation highlights: Music opened the world to her, but she began in Miami (hometown). She went to NYC to launch her recording career, not get into nightclub singing, which is demanding. But she worked hard gigging while going to school! Take a listen, and you can understand the magnitude of her talent, hoot spa, love for her musical studies while singing six nights a week! Her work in Europe Her brother Curtis, their background, and its impact on her music How she creatively worked through the early lockdown days of covid and the negativity in the world.  Carmen spent 8-to-10-hour days, four ½ months to edit VHS film that celebrates the music & conversations of her mother and aunts, singers in a gospel group for over 40 years! To revisit that “time tunnel” was a gift, and Nothing But The Blood was born! Her Grammy-nominated work Modern Ancestors https://youtu.be/8dyKPez2SM0 We speak of her work Soul to Soul. Had I not been in strict fangirl mode, I would have asked her about her creations - When they would learn and Daybreak! rammy® Nominated vocalist and composer Carmen Lundy began her professional career in Miami, FL when there were very few young, gifted and aspiring jazz vocalists on the horizon. Over four decades later, Ms. Lundy is celebrated throughout the world for her vocal artistry and is highly regarded for her jazz innovation.A native of Miami, Florida, Carmen Lundy's path to being one of today's most talented and respected jazz singers began at age six, with her first piano lessons. She was deeply inspired by her mother who was then lead singer in the gospel group, The Apostolic Singers. Ms. Lundy attended The University of Miami as an Opera major, but soon discovered that jazz was where her talent really shone. While working steadily in the Miami Jazz scene, she graduated with a degree in Studio Music and Jazz, one of the first singers to do so. Lundy then moved to New York City in 1978, and in 1991 relocated to the Los Angeles area and continued her storied career, impressing the notoriously critical jazz cognoscenti and audiences alike.Currently on the Afrasia Productions label, Carmen is a 2021 Grammy® Nominated artist for her 15th album Modern Ancestors, for Best Jazz Vocal Album.  Her previous release, 2017's Code Noir, debuted at #6 on the Billboard Jazz Chart to both critical and popular acclaim. Carmen's full discography consists of “Good Morning Kiss”, “Moment To Moment”, “Night And Day, “Old Devil Moon”, “Self Portrait”, “Something To Believe In”, “This Is Carmen Lundy”, “Jazz and The New Songbook – Live at The Madrid”, “Come Home”, “Solamente”, “Changes”, “Soul To Soul” and “Code Noir”.  All have topped the Best Albums and Top Ten Albums lists on Billboard, JazzWeek, Downbeat, and JazzTimes.Carbé and Durand are a Latin guitar duo performing original music and their own arrangements of rock, pop and blues. The Carbé and Durand Latin guitar duo are part of the world music group Incendio. They fashion their original music (as well as popular songs by other artists) on two nylon string guitars. Their fiery approach to playing the Spanish guitar excites and invigorates audiences everywhere they perform. They mix Latin rhythms and romantic melodies with heart felt blues and rock energy.

In this episode of our PILOT ERROR series we look at the TV pilot for Shangri-La Plaza (1990). A musical-comedy unsold pilot made by CBS in 1990. Macho Ira and sensitive George are two polar-opposite brothers who own an auto-repair shop in Southern California. Both men quickly fall for Amy, a beautiful widow who has inherited the local donut shop previously owned by her no-good estranged husband. Amy plans to sell the place and move with her daughter Jenny to Paris, only to find that her ex-husband had "hocked the place up down to the powdered sugar", forcing her to put off her dreams and run the place herself. Geneva was the sassy waitress at the coffee shop, and Chili the rapper-narrator-dancer on crutches. Some of the pilot's extremely memorable numbers include "Donut Hole" (Geneva, Jenny and the Customers), "Don't Tell Me I Can Really Care" (George and Ira) and "Ain't It Always the Way" (Amy, George, Ira and Geneva). Terrence Mann , Jeff Yagher , Melora Hardin , Carmen Lundy , Savion Glover , Allison Mack and others star. Listen, rate and share. Modern Ancestors. Two words with significantly different connotations that come together and remind us that not only do opposites attract, but that we are all products of those who came before us; our Ancestors can be honored and reinterpreted, continually present and very much a part of who we are and what influences us today. Such is the common thread running through Carmen Lundy's brilliant new album, Modern Ancestors. Thanks to the National Parks Arts Foundation for sponsoring this episode.

Her family fled to Miami when she was about 6 years old. Music was an integral part of her family: her father played guitar, her mother was a singer and Mayra joined her older brothers to form a percussion section. In fact, Mayra says that music helped her family survive when they moved to Miami; serving as both their release and solidarity. Mayra has played with a variety of jazz and Latin artists, including: Celia Cruz, Machito, Joe Cuba, Miquelito Veldez, Tito Puente, Dizzy Gillespie, Wayne Shorter, Carmen Lundy, David Amram, Regina Carter, Sophie B. Hawkins, Regina Bell, Dave Stryker, and The O'Jays. In 2008 Mayra helped found the vibrant World Latin music group Cocomama, which she now leads. Mayra is the Director of the Toni and Ed Fallon Jazz Scholarship to honor the memory of Bill Evans, providing financial support to promising high school graduates with their formal jazz studies. Mayra’s spiritual groundedness and fiery, passionate, lovable spirit infuses both her music and the focus and gratitude that colors her everyday life. The Third Story Podcast with Leo Sidran

What is there to say about guitarist Lage Lund that hasn’t already been said? Not much. And plenty. Lage has been a fixture on the New York jazz scene since moving here in the early 2000s as a “skinny kid from Norway with dreads”. The dreads are long gone, and there is very little about him today to indicate that he grew up in a small Norwegian city (Skien) where he had to take a three hour train ride to Oslo to buy the latest jazz albums, and that before he was one of the most creative and virtuosic guitarists of his generation, he was a frustrated skateboarder with no place to skate “vert”. A regular in the “Rising star – Guitar” category in the Downbeat Critic’s Poll, he has been hailed by Pat Metheny as a favorite young guitarist, and is “all music and all soul” according to Russell Malone - one of the judges who awarded Lund top prize in the 2005 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition. Of Lund, guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel once said, "Of the younger cats, Lage is THE one. He's a wonderful player. Scary actually!" Acclaimed as one of the finest guitarists in jazz, Lund has performed and recorded with artists like Ron Carter, Mulgrew Miller, Wynton Marsalis, Maria Schneider, Carmen Lundy, David Sanchez, Seamus Blake and many others. He is currently preparing three new projects:  “Lage Lund Lonely Band” The upcoming release “Party Of One” has Lund covering all parts in each aspect of the process: writing, arranging, performing, recording, producing as well as directing music videos; a new Criss Cross release of all original material, written for and developed by his longstanding quartet consisting of Sullivan Fortner, Matt Brewer & Tyshawn Sorey. And a duo album with pianist Bryn Roberts. Lage came over recently to talk about who influenced him, where he’s looking when he plays, when he discovered that guitar doesn’t suck, how musicians communicate, what happened to swing, and why jazz musicians drink natural wine. This Episode also features an extensive introduction by my guest co-host for the week, singer/ songwriter Joy Dragland. Joy also happens to be married to Lage. Thanks for listening. We even saw a Black Lives Matter flag raised over a high school in Vermont, and of course Black Panther burn up the box office, smashing records along the way. Grammy-nominated drummer/singer Jamison Ross is proving that he’s not a one-hit-wonder with the release of his latest recording for Concord Jazz. Titled All For One, the winner of the 2012 Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz International Drum Competition, Ross is solidifying his reputation as one of his generation's brightest young drummer/vocalists. Accompanied by pianist Chris Pattishall, guitarist Rick Lollar (both of whom played on the 2015 debut), bassist Barry Stephenson, and Cory Irvin on Hammond organ and Fender Rhodes. Ross exceeds expectations set by his debut release and heightens his listeners' appreciation for his compositional integrity, vocals, arranging and bandleader skills in this eclectic mix of blues, jazz, R&B and soul. The 13-disc recording features down home New Orleans-style of blues and jazz singing as well as some pure straight ahead bebop that surely was gleaned as an accompanist to some of today’s most revered jazz artists including singer Cécile McLorin Salvant, pianists Jonathan Batiste, Dr. John and Jon Cleary; and bassist Christian McBride. Ross also has accompanied singer and composer Carmen Lundy, who invited Ross to join her band prior to the Thelonius Monk competition.  The recording opens with "A Mellow Time,” which is a mighty remake of the 1966 tune written by Allen Toussaint and made famous by Lee Dorsey. The title track – "All For One” – is a groovin’ Crescent City-based song written and recorded in 1993 by Wilson Turbinton, better known as Willie Tee. Written By Sounds of Timeless Jazz

Los Angeles, California.  CODE NOIR, the stunning new CD from critically-lauded vocalist Carmen Lundy, is slated for release February 17th via Afrasia Productions.  Never one to limit her creative journeys, Lundy explores the realms of Jazz, Blues, Brazilian Samba and Pop with a multitude of messages that reflect not only the complexities of her own mindset, but the disparity of the world at large.  Poignant, heartfelt, joyous, shocked, saddened and impassioned are just a few of the emotions conveyed by this wonderfully evocative singer on CODE NOIR in a highly personal musical voyage.   "These songs encompass the musical and artistic influences from the African diaspora and its influence on jazz and other musical genres – the bossa nova, the blues, swing, funk, the exploration into the avant-garde," says Carmen.  "Yet they also encompass the many emotions that are prevalent in this country right now.  We are going through tough times with a country that is sorely divided and many of these tracks reflect the feelings that we as human beings are going through on an individual level.  CODE NOIR actually refers to the first law ever written by a person in power of a sovereign nation/empire - the King of France Louis XIV - the first law to disallow and make illegal the integration of the African race into white European society."   Having written or co-written all twelve tracks on the album, Carmen envelops her listeners from the start with the questioning opening song, "Another Chance" - a thought-provoking title truly pertinent in the world today.  "Live Out Loud" encourages us to do just that while "Black And Blues" is about our present affairs, "the legacy of the black experience in America,” says Carmen.  “The unplanned fallout and result of legislating and legalizing systemic racism.

“Soul To Soul,” a passionate new song cycle from vocalist, songwriter, producer and musician Carmen Lundy, is set for release September 23rd, 2014 via Afrasia Productions. “Soul To Soul”, Lundy's 14th album, is the next chapter in her critically-acclaimed career as both a musical artist and a visual artist; a return to her roots but also an exploration of these roots — and the journey that those roots can take you on. The release of “Soul To Soul” will be accompanied by tour dates both in the U.S. and overseas. Carmen Lundy began working on “Soul To Soul” well over a year ago in a very hands-on manner — literally composing, co-composing and arranging eleven of the thirteen tracks and then playing and recording all the instruments - including bass, drums, piano, guitar and percussion — in her home studio to get a working “feel” for how the music might sound. She then “sweetened” the songs by adding string sounds and other software instruments to elaborate and experiment with the aural mood of each track, interpreting and identifying with each track's sound individually as well as part of the overall song sequence. On the final CD, Lundy plays guitar on all tracks, piano and Rhodes on many tracks, and drums on two. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/sashamarinamedia/message

NEW CD FROM VOCALIST CARMEN LUNDY, ‘SOUL TO SOUL,' SET FOR RELEASE SEPTEMBER 23 Carmen Lundy began working on “Soul To Soul” well over a year ago in a very hands-on manner – literally composing, co-composing and arranging eleven of the thirteen tracks and then playing and recording all the instruments - including bass, drums, piano, guitar and percussion - in her home studio to get a working “feel” for how the music might sound. “I wrote the music with specific players in mind for each respective instrument,” says Lundy.  “My producer and label co-owner Elisabeth Oei encouraged me to reach out to those musicians whose music I have loved and have been inspired by; some of whom I had worked with but never recorded with. I consider these artists specialists on their instruments.  These are players who bring a distinctive sound to everything they play andadd another layer of individuality to my original music.” Press from Official Carmen Lundy website

Hello again! At the outset of putting together the 18th episode, I knew I couldn’t reasonably expect listeners to sit through almost three hours of this business, but there was too much good stuff left on the cutting room floor, so I knew fairly early on that there would be a “bonus EP” of sorts. In the spirit of the other Haines-inspired title, I’m calling this one: What This Was Going to Supposed to Mean Here’s the tracklist, following the format of Episode 18, it’s just bare bones, with credits and other info directly following it. Please take a look at the previous blog post for more info on all the albums from which these tracks are culled. I won’t rehash info at the album level, only what’s unique and pertinent at the level of each individual track. Episode 18.1 Playlist (00:00) “Testing Testing” (03:00) “In a Landscape X” (06:16) “Art in Heaven” (08:50) “What Is Free to a Good Home (For Robert Wyatt)” (13:55) “Live on the Internet: A Diary (April 7)” (17:51) “Cellular Phone” (21:04) “In a Landscape XL” (23:47) “Third World Two Medley: She Was Showing Me / Boint Liver” (26:15) “Vocalise (For Jeanne Lee)” (45:23) “Paint Me!” (50:48) “Toy Epigrams” (53:42) “Today” (57:05) “In a Landscape XXXVI” (59:17) “What this Was Going to Supposed to Mean” (1:01:27) “This Dedication” Tracks 1, 3, 8, 14 and 15 are from the Darn It! album. Tracks 2, 7 and 13 were recorded by John Gallaher. Tracks 4, 10 and 12 are from Curlew’s A Beautiful Western Saddle album. Track 5 was recorded by Becca Klaver. Track 6 was from Karen Alkalay-Gut’s album Thin Lips. Track 9 was from the Joelle Leandre / Steve Dalachinsky album The Bill Has Been Paid. Track 11 was from the Bernadette Mayer reading captured on the Rattle up a Deer CD. All information given in the previous blog post applies here as well except for the following: Track 1 features the voices of Paul Haines’s sons, and the latter part of the track features guitar and bass from ex-”No Wave” pioneer and DNA member Tim Wright. Track 3 finds Derek Bailey playing guitar and reciting Haines’s poem. Track 8 features vocals by Mary Margaret O’Hara, Fernando Saunders on bass, and Gary Lucas on guitar. Gary also wrote the music. On track 14 you’ll hear saxophone from Evan Parker and vocals by Carmen Lundy. Finally, track 15 was written by, and features tenor sax from, John Tchicai, bass by Andy Gonzalez, and drums by Marvin Smith. Enjoy, and let Papers for the Border know what you think!
