Send us a Text Message. She could play the piano by ear at the age of 3 and was accepted into the prestigious Julliard school of music at age 8. By 19 she was headlining at Café Society, the first racially integrated club in New York City. She went on to become a successful Hollywood film star, fierce Civil Rights activist, and the first Black woman to host her own television show. She counted Frank Sinatra, Billie Holiday, and Dizzy Gillespie as close friends, dominating the jazz scene as a piano virtuoso who put her own spin on the classics. Her rise to the top was nothing short of inspirational, the American dream at its finest, loved by all, glowing, electric. But did you know, you've probably never even heard of her? Let's fix that. Today, Alicia takes us back to wartime New York, for the scandal that rocked 1940s cafe society. Our man Nick described the case this way in his July 2000 Vanity Fair story: A young, attractive socialite, Patricia Lonergan, is found naked in her bedroom, bludgeoned and strangled to death. The accused: her wildly handsome, devastatingly charming husband, Wayne, a fortune hunter whose lurid alibi shocks even New York's toughest police officers and tabloid reporters. The murder and subsequent trial were the media sensation of 1943 and '44, played out against the cafe-society backdrop of the Stork Club and El Morocco. Let's investigate! We all know Betty White from her years on The Mary Tyler Moore Show and The Golden Girls. But decades before she was making us laugh in primetime, White was hosting a daytime TV talk show that saw her improvising more than five hours of programming every day. Yep, she’s not only one of our most beloved funny ladies, she’s also a TV pioneer. She is one of the superstars from the era When Women Invented Television, as Pop Literacy co-host Jennifer Keishin Armstrong chronicles in her fantastic new book of the same name. From White and Gertrude Berg, the radio star who brought her long-running radio comedy The Goldbergs to television, to Hazel Scott, the singer and piano player who was also the first Black entertainer to host a national variety TV show, and Irna Phillips, another radio alum, who created the television soap opera, there’s a lineup of women who truly set up the future of TV. This week, Jennifer shares not only the fascinating details of how these extraordinary women shaped the medium that helps shape our culture more than ever, but the sad forces that prevented most of them from being the household names they should be. Notes From Her is the podcast that encourages women and others to embrace their inner multicultural melody and will be having an interruption in its normal podcast style to report on the Black Lives Matter movement and revolution. The series is entitled Voices From the Streets of the Black Lives Matter Movement. This is a special episode of the series because it mixes #BlackLivesMatter and Notes From Her’s women MOC theme into one! Meet MOC number 10, jazz legend, virtuoso pianist, and historical trailblazer the late Hazel Dorothy Scott. This is a special blast from the past episode honoring what would have been Scott’s 100th birthday celebration! The soundbites are taken from an interview she did with a Philadelphia WFIL entitled “Say it Loud: Black, Immigrant and Proud.” Hazel Dorothy Scott, was a Trinidad-born Black woman. Scott, referred to as the “Darling of Café Society” was a multi-talented woman. Her success fusing jazz, classical, and boogie music made her a jazz music legend. The virtuoso pianist was also a singer, actress, and radio personality. She was the first Black woman to host her own television show, The Hazel Scott Show. Her album Relaxed Piano Moods is considered one jazz’s most important and famous twentieth century work. She was married to the high profile congressman Adam Clayton Powell II and was a Civil Rights/Social Justice activist before her time who refused to play for segregated audiences, organized a march in Paris to the US Embassy in solidarity with Dr. King’s march in Washington DC, and also demanded she be paid as much as her white counterparts. For more information on Hazel Scott go to hazelscott.comMusic used in this episode is Hazel Scott’s playing “Black and White” on two pianos! Finn & Thomas review Perfect Strangers, Café Society, Indignation, & The Navigator
On At The Movies, Simon Morris reviews three more films from the Spring Clearout season - Jack Reacher Never Go Back, starring Tom Cruise; Café Society, Woody Allen's new comedy, set in 1930s Hollywood and spy spoof Keeping Up With The Joneses, starring Zach Galifianakis and Jon Hamm.
Café Society, The Neon Demon and Heart of a Dog are discussed. With Thomas Caldwell, Cerise Howard, Alexandra Heller-Nicholas and Emma Westwood.
If you’re fan of that strange nostalgia that comes from witnessing old Hollywood glamour, Café Society might just be for you. Complete with a backdrop of wonderfully detailed fashions, an upbeat jazzy soundtrack and in the company of presumably rich, carefree socialites, Woody Allen’s latest venture is a rabbit hole into that bygone era of Hollywood romanticism. Set in the late 1930s, Café Society details the life of the young and naïve Bobby Dorfman, as he sets foot in Hollywood, eager to make a name for himself. Using the connections of his powerful uncle, he is given a front seat to the glitz and glam of Hollywood life. However, for all it’s glory and lavishness, Bobby finds himself more infatuated with his uncle’s secretary, Veronica, or rather, Vonnie, as she’s called. From here, a messy and bittersweet romance unfolds itself and brings Bobby back to New York, where he runs a high society night club with the support of his colourful and eccentric family. The film is delivered with a light-hearted playfulness and charming sense of humour. And through this whimsical setting, Café Society departs a rather sympathetic view towards the fickle and impulsive nature of love and its effect on relationships. Whether or not you agree with the character’s choices throughout the film, it’s clear that Allen isn’t afraid to have them dwell on their feelings and in many cases explain their positions in the form of conversation and argument. There are numerous scenes throughout this film where characters unabashedly proclaim their different ideals and philosophies on life, on relationships and whatever else. It’s here that Allen really shines, able to create incredibly natural dialogue full of conflict and energy, yet never loses its sense of wit. In this sense, the constant shifting from party, to restaurant, to dinner table really sells the heart of this film: A Café Society obsessed with itself, full of moral ambiguity, mindless gossip – all drenched in a layer of pretention. And what’s not to love? It’s difficult to resist the allure of it all, especially with the detail they have put into the setting. Here, many of the background characters spring to life. Just through little snippets of dialogue and interaction with the main cast, Allen manages to carefully construct many vibrant set pieces that suck you in. In terms of the performances, Jesse Eisenberg plays, well, Jesse Eisenberg. His stuttery and seemingly perpetually-nervous performance of Bobby is to be expected at this point, and save for a few scenes, it’s acceptable for the most part. Surprisingly, Kristen Stewart sets the bar as the mysterious and ever down-to-earth Vonnie. Though I never thought I’d say this, the muted and generally stoic demeanour that has copped her criticism in the past actually comes off quite refreshing in a sea of endlessly flamboyant characters with rapid-fire speech patterns. In concluding this review, I’d like to make a somewhat embarrassing and shameful confession: I have not seen a Woody Allen film. There, I said it. Now, whether this discredits my authority on the quality of this film or perhaps, leaves me unclouded to whatever preconceptions his previous works may given me, that is up for you to decide. But I will say for sure, from what I’ve seen so far, I’d like to see more. Café Society opens to cinemas everywhere on the 20th of October. Written by Victor Cai

Our discussion of these two Woody Allen films touches on Allen’s films touring around the world, female characters used as a trope to motivate the male characters, the laws of relationships in Allen’s films, bad use of voiceover, quantity producing quality, Allen’s storytelling style, the beautiful photography in both films, the complication of reading a film in a disconnected way from the director’s private life, our commitment as teachers to young people and how that impacts on our reading of the films, the different expectations of relationships from the 1970s to now, whether or not Allen’s characters are designed to be likeable, the manic-pixie-dream-girl trope, and the endings of both films. William Chen, Jeremy Downing, Max Tarrant and Sarah Watt discuss the films Café Society (2016) and Manhattan (1979).

Join me to hear my thoughts about this latest New York to Hollywood and return to New York romp shining a light on all that glitters and exposing that is truly, not gold!
Is Woody Allen’s latest movie among his best? The story involves a young New Yorker (Jesse Eisenberg) who goes to Hollywood in the 1930s to work with his uncle (Steve […] The post TAKE TWO: “Café Society” appeared first on KKFI.

Hollister and O’Toole discuss Woody Allen's 46th film, Café Society, which opened this year's Cannes Film Festival (but was not in competition - as Woody Allen puts it, competition is fine when it comes to sports, but he doesn't believe in it when it comes to the arts). Starring Jesse Eisenberg (The End of the Tour), Kristen Stewart (Still Alice), Blake Lively (The Shallows), Steve Carell, Corey Stoll (House of Cards), and Parker Posey.

Sean Burns joins Evan and Dave to discuss why Wesley Snipes movies have the best one-liners in their trailers. Since Sean hasn’t seen the week’s big movie JASON BOURNE (at 3:12), he plays a fun game where he tries to guess its plot while Evan and Dave tell him what he got right. Following some jokes about THE BOURNE LEGACY (or THE BOURNE LAZENBY as Sean calls it), some questions about why we got another Bourne movie, and a tangent on Michael Douglas, Sean covers Woody Allen’s CAFÉ SOCIETY (at 34:10). Listeners know that Dave normally hates Woody Allen, however Sean manages to spoilerpiece him into tolerating the movie by sharing how much Allen gives a shit visually in this 1930s outing. After Sean explores its message that “It ain’t like it used to be, and it never was,” he reviews Sian Heder’s TALLULAH (at 48:52), a strong first effort starring Ellen Page and Allison Janney. From there, they all descend into tangents about the Coolidge’s upcoming horror movie marathon and differing opinions on various De Palma films (mainly Sean and Dave’s).
Nathan and Scotty discuss Café Society, written and directed by Woody Allen. Say what you will about Woody Allen, but the man is a full-on auteur. Ostensibly, he has released a film every year for forty years. Café Society, set during the Golden Age of Hollywood, is everything you want from a good Woody Allen film. It's funny, romantic, and doesn't overstay it's welcome. In all actuality, we could have stayed in this universe for another hour. Check it out at your local cinema and tell 'em who sent ya. Plus, on tonight's episode @Andydrogynous reviews Star Trek Beyond. This episode is sponsored by Philz Coffee.
In which we celebrate the appropriately messy return of Edina and Patsy in ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS: THE MOVIE, disagree over where CAFÉ SOCIETY fits into Woody Allen's filmography, tremble fearfully at LIGHTS OUT's expert combination of horror and heart, and are nearly as frightened by the maddening picture of the music industry in BREAKING A MONSTER.
With Outfest behind them, Dave and Alonso can dig back into the new movies, including a Kristen Stewart vehicle so forgettable that it sets off perhaps a record number of tangents and digressions.
Three time Oscar Winning Cinematographer Vittorio Storaro (APOCALYPSE NOW, THE LAST EMPEROR, REDS) sits in the green room of the Paramount Theater about to speak before the first US screening of Woody Allen's new film, Café Society. Storaro not only brought his genius to the film as Cinematographer, he accomplished something no one else had done thus far -- got Woody Allen to go digital. Café Society was both Allen and Storaro's first full-length feature film shot on digital. Storaro, who in 1983 had tested early HD camera technology from Sony Professional, saw their vision for the future and believed they were creatively aligned. After much conversation Storaro and Allen decided the Sony F65 CineAlta 4K camera was the way to go. We were privileged to sit down with Storaro before the first US screening of Café Society at the Paramount Theater as part of the Cine Gear Expo. Storaro who has been known for his genius for manipulating light and shadow, details his passion for the great painters, architects, sculptors and photographers throughout the ages who have influenced his craft and warns of the dangers of not striking the "balance between Technology and Art". He refers to his method as "writing with light", an art that is quickly becoming endangered. His breadth of knowledge of both art and technology is astounding yet he insists "How wonderful it was to be a student. I was doing what I love without any pressure. Catch that moment and take it with you in your pocket. Never stop learning." Café Society opens in the US on July 15, 2016. Stay tuned for our full review. LOTL The Comfort Zone Welcomes , Soulful Jazz Vocalist CHARENEE WADE. Releases Her Interpretation of The Revolutionary Music of Gil Scott-Heron & Brian Jackson ..Offering: The Music of Gil Scott-Heron and Brian Jackson . Charenee Wade is not one to hold back or let fear stand in her way. The first artist ever to enter two Thelonious Monk Vocal competitions, she walked away from the second one in 2010 with instant buzz and second place to her new friend Cecilé McLorin Salvant. Now is the time for Wade's star to rise. Known for expert vocal improvisational ability and her seriously swinging groove, Wade evokes a classic jazz sound akin to Betty Carter and Sarah Vaughan, two of her musical touchstones. With her Motéma debut, Offering: The Music of Gil Scott-Heron and Brian Jackson (June 23), she pays tribute to another inspiration, the socially conscious poet and musician Gil Scott-Heron, and confirms that she too plans to use her artist platform thoughtfully. The first full-length album tribute to Scott-Heron and his musical collaborator Brian Jackson by a woman artist, Offering is arresting in just how timely Scott-Heron's messages are today and how perfectly Wade delivers them through her savvy arrangements and intimate jazz interpretations. While she has earned many accolades – first runner-up in New York's Jazzmobile Vocal competition; a participant in Betty Carter's Jazz Ahead program; a feature on NPR's Song Travels; a starring role in the off-Broadway show Café Society and in Jazz at Lincoln Center's Salute to Betty Carter – she may surprise people with this authentic tour de force. Wade embodies Scott-Heron's poems deeply and with a pathos that belies her age.
Banter's ongoing 'Living for the City' series on living, working and playing in the capital continues to produce some great discussions, including this look at the growth in the city’s new-school cafés. We gathered together a panel of café fanatics - namely Maisha Lenehan from Bibis, Barry Stephens from 147, Aisling Rogerson from The Fumbally and Ketty Elisabeth from the French Foodie In Dublin blog - to talk about where this growth has come from, what’s behind it and what’s next as taste buds get more adventurous.
