Saxophonist Julian “Cannonball” Adderley (born Sept 15,1928) and his cornetist brother Nat (born Nov 25, 1931) co-led one of the most successful jazz groups of the 1960's-1970's. From the time they arrived on the NYC scene from their native Florida in 1955, and sat in with bassist Oscar Pettiford, they set the town ablaze. Both musicians found work with many of the jazz luminaries of the time, Cannonball famously with Miles Davis' great sextet that included John Coltrane and recorded Kind of Blue, the biggest selling jazz recording of all time, and Nat with trombonist J. J. Johnson and Woody Herman. By 1959 they formed their long-standing quintet and had their first hit with This Here, the first of many successful recordings, many composed by Nat for the quintet. Nat is also one of the few jazz musicians to continue playing the cornet, instead of the brighter/brassier trumpet favored by most players, which helped give the quintet a more intimate warmer sound.
Tonight's Jazz Feature is the recording debut of drummer Louis Hayes. It was recorded in April of 1960 for the Vee-Jay Records a short lived label owned by African-Americans that produced a number of essential albums. This date was Louis' first under his name and he was only 23. Hayes was born in Detroit on May 31,1937 and just celebrated his 87th Birthday. He is well and still plays engagements. Young Louis picked the tunes and the very worthy sidemen here beginning with his first mentor, the great Yusef Lateef who plays tenor saxophone exclusively here. Nat Adderley is a dynamo on cornet, Barry Harris is on piano and Sam Jones is on bass. Jones and Hayes make for one of the finest rhythm sections in Modern Jazz. The tunes are all originals: one by Yusef Lateef, one by Cannonball Adderley,, one by Sonny Red, one by Nat Adderley and two by Barry Harris. A well paced and swingin' album with great playing by all and inspired by the driving beat and good taste of Louis Hayes. This is the real deal!
The record store day madness continues as the boys take two Cannonball Adderley air-shots from France for a spin. Whether he's Poppin in Paris or Burning in Bordeaux, the listener can hear Adderley's group transitioning from the sixties to the seventies, even if things get bumpy from time to time. To put the great alto saxophone player's creativity into context, two of his more surprising releases on Capitol Records also get a look in. Once you've heard the man's stone classics, here's something else for you to try. Cannonball Adderley: ACCENT ON AFRICA; QUINTET WITH ORCHESTRA; BURNIN' IN BOURDEAUX; POPPIN' IN PARIS.

Many years ago, bastard Mike suggested that our anniversary shows feature groups comprised of as many members as the anniversary was of years. How's that for a mouthful (mindful?) Anyway, good idea until right about now. Eleven is an awkward number unless you're fielding a footie team, and the boys have some issues finding albums that fit the bill or even glance in the direction of this anniversary. Next year, all bets are off. Nat Adderly – THAT'S RIGHT; Bobby Selvaggio – STORIES, DREAMS, INSPIRATIONS; Gil Evans – PLUS TEN; Jeff Lorber and Mike Stern – ELEVEN. IN a very special Pop Matters, Mike mocks the Cocteau Twins and Pat (with Mike's help) questions the sanity of Atlantic Records latest deluxe reissues.

We're taking a look at 4 of my favorite solo breaks of all time featuring Michael Brecker, Lee Morgan, Pat Metheny, and Nat Adderley. It's incredible how much these sounds and phrases have stuck with me throughout my career and informed what I do today, even if I don't write, play, or record in the style of any of these artists. It's all about time and sound informing nuance. I also give an update on the pre-production progress for the new album, and report on yesterday's pedal test session at the rehearsal studio in Los Angeles.
«Work Song» Cannonball Adderley: Live! (1964, Capitol) Tomajazz: © Pachi Tapiz, 2022 ¿Sabías que? En 2022 se ha publicado el doble CD recopilatorio de Nina Simone Feeling Good. Her Greatest Hits & Remixes. This Jazz Feature album is a rather rare one and it's the debut recording as a leader of drum master Louis Hayes. Louis Hayes was just 21 when he recorded this date on April 26,1960. He was by then working steadily with Julian "Cannonball" Adderley and he chose musicians that he enjoyed playing with and of course 3 of them were also working with Adderley. Louis chose Nat Adderley on cornet, Barry Harris on piano and Sam Jones on bass. The other important member was an early mentor of Louis' and the man who gave him his first gigs. That man was the great Yusef Lateef. Yusef is heard here exclusively on tenor saxophone and his big dark sound is one of the album's highlights. Louis wisely chose music not associated with the Adderley Quintet but selected the tunes for themselves and that fact marks this date as distinctive. This is a great debut for a most talented young man. Louis didn't record again as a leader until the mid-70's. Louis Hayes and company equals high quality Jazz!

Making a Scene Presents an Interview with Damon FowlerFlorida's Gulf Coast has produced a plethora of distinctive musicians, from the blues of Tampa Red to jazz greats Cannonball and Nat Adderley to former Allman Brothers guitarist Dickey Betts to The Outlaws. Tampa's Damon Fowler, a masterful singer, guitar player, and songwriter has absorbed the best of and furthered the region's definitive artists' work. A hard-driving troubadour, his music is steeped with soul and representative of the many styles that make up American music's roots. He has gained his peers' respect given his featured slot in Butch Truck's Freight Train band and his side gig as guitarist in the Dickey Betts Band. Critics have compared Fowler's guitar work to Johnny Winter and Jeff Beck, while his slide guitar is reminiscent of the late Duane Allman. Fowler can play fiery guitar runs with the best of them, and his lyrical work on lap steel and dobro makes him a stand out performer among the legions of guitar heroes. His new release, Alafia Moon, combines all the influences that have shaped his distinctive blues career. Jazz saxophonist and producer Nathan Haines has been through somewhat of a metamorphosis in recent years. He's evolved from edgy wunderkind to humble legend, via sobriety, fatherhood and cancer. Haines is acknowledged to be our country's leading jazz musician. His first solo album Shift Left was a game-changing fusion of acid jazz and hip-hop and won New Zealand Jazz Record of the Year. A decade long stint in London had him on the vanguard of the acid jazz movement, working with producer and DJ Phil Asher to make now classic albums Sound Travels and Squire for Hire. Nathan was born into a musical family and learnt at the knee of his father Kevin. Kevin Haines is a jazz bassist and has performed with artists including Nat Adderley, Eartha Kitt, Lee Konitz and Georgie Fame. Nathan and Kevin will be performing a show Songs With My Father on Sunday, October 18 as part of Auckland's Elemental Nights Festival.
"We live in a very very weird society here as far as art is concerned. Certainly when it comes to the art form of jazz. When I came to Baltimore with Jackie back in 1965 there was a very vibrant jazz community here. They had the North End Lounge and they had The Left Bank Jazz Society that was committed to carrying on the tradition of the music and have all kinds of musicians come in and play. I played there with Nat Adderley and James Moody and these circumstances are no longer in existence. As I think there is really only one jazz club here in Baltimore that has a consistent policy. Unfortunately it's located in a neighborhood that is very crime and drug ridden. It's just weird, in order to get into this club you have to be buzzed in which sends another kind of message about the safety of that area." When I look at our society, the economic landscape and I relate it to jazz or music in general - our culture. One of the things I have noticed is that our culture is continually being stifled. Culture is the underpinning and backbone of any society. When you see programs which are being pushed forward to nullify education, to take away someone's ability to even eat and clothe and house themselves when there is a push to deny the right to be healthy. This is at the underpinning and I am becoming more and more fearful of the move in that direction. Hopefully I can count on the intelligence and sensitivity of American Society in General. But it's here and were going to have to deal with it. Otherwise we will have to endure negative consequences beyond belief. Culture, Art and Music stimulate the human spirit and the human intellect. If these attitudes are allowed to move forward and exist they are going to deny and destroy that energy that society must have coming from its culture. For example when I came along, if you were important in the Jazz Club you worked there at least 4 weeks period if not longer. It has been relegated to weekends now. The mere fact of having that time space limited to what it has become, in my view denies people access on a daily basis to things that fortify their spiritual life. My big problem with all of this, I am fearful we will become spiritually dead here and when that happens anything can happen. History has shown this happening before with Germany in the 1920s and 1930s and we all know all too well what that produced. We don't need another Holocaust, we don't need another Hitler." --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/jake-feinberg/support

STANDARD SEMANAL.- “NARDIS”( Cannonball Adderley-Bill Evans-George Russell)-JAZZ RECUERDO ANIVERSARIO.- Charles Mingus - At The Bohemia (1955) .-JAZZ ACTUALIDAD .- Esta semana tendremos a LLUIS COLOMA-PIANO SOLO-YVONNE MORIEL-DREA MERS.

He and the other recipients were honored at the Savannah Heritage Festival (2017,2019). Jonathan has also played with his band, The Urban Intellectuals at the 2018 Jacksonville Jazz Festival. The Urban Intellectuals is built with the some of the finest musicians Florida has to offer. The phrase “Urban Intellectuals” derived from the phrase “Urban Renewal”, often criticized by the great James Baldwin, which was a tactic used in the 60s that relocated a majority of African Americans into what we now know as the projects. Those “urban” individuals that refused to just go with the flow and to enlighten their communities is what sparked the name: The Urban Intellectuals. Jonathan Baptiste and The Urban Intellectuals look to educate and inspire people through their music. The band endeavors to set a consistent example and be role models to inner city kids — showing them that they make music and be creative— no matter their skin color. In this episode we're featuring Kaia Kater and a nod to the Brothers Adderley. First up, the new roots and blues of Kaia Kater. She's Canadian born, yet embodies all the musical treasures the Americas have to offer. From bluegrass, folk, and jazz, to MC's like Rakim and Kendrick Lamar, it all comes together in this burgeoning artist's style of songwriting. Along with Ms. Kater, music columnist Bao Le-Huu (This Little Underground/The Orlando Weekly) joins in the conversation. Speaking of taking in all the sounds of America (and the world at large in this case), we pay tribute to the brothers Adderley: Cannonball and Nat. With a body of work that left no stone unturned, these two did it all with a sense of musical adventure and accessibility with a bit of show-biz gleen. All types of great music passed through the brothers' horns, ranging in themes to folklore, Broadway, afrobeat, astrology, religion, and psychedelia. Along the way the left a trail of bonafide classics - Work Song, Mercy, Mercy, Mercy, and Sack O' Woe - not to mention a who's who of talents they helped to foster, from Joe Zawinul, Charles Lloyd, George Duke, Yusef Lateef, and more. The title here explains it all. Julian "Cannonball" Adderley in 1959 left the Miles Davis Sextet after making music history with the band, especially the album "Kind of Blue" and others of course but Adderley and his cornet playing brother Nat were ready to re-form their quintet. The first one was not too successful financially and Nat joined Woody Herman's band and later trombonist J.J.Johnson and Cannonball went with Miles but by 1959 the time was ripe. The Adderley Brothers settled on a stable personnel in the persons of pianist /composer Bobby Timmons, late of Art Blakey's Jazz messengers, bassist Sam Jones, late of Thelonious Monk's group and young drummer, Louis Hayes, late of Horace Silver's quintet and during an engagement in San Francisco at the legendary Jazz Workshop in October of 1959 the group came together and made this recording. It became a best seller for Riverside Records and put Adderley on the map as a great bandleader. This was the beginning. The premise of this month's 4 Jazz Features are recordings that were dismissed as inconsequential by the "esteemed" Jazz critics. This album was given a poor rating and dismissed. It is now a classic and one of the best loved of Adderley's vast output. We will present one of these types of dates in all the Jazz features in November. So tonight enjoy the warm swinging and funky sounds of Cannonball Adderley and Company at The Jazz Workshop.......a classic!
Our Jazz feature album is Cannonball Adderley's "Fiddler On The Roof". It is an overlooked gem in the vast discography of master alto saxophonist Julian "Cannonball" Adderley. Not only is his band not playing their usual repertoire they are playing music from an iconic Broadway hit play about life in the Jewish ghetto in early 20th Century Russia. The music and the story are so well known and it's a tribute to the musicianship of Adderley and his band that they have made a very credible album of what is really non-Jazz music. The great tenor saxophonist/flutist Charles Lloyd had just replaced the mighty Yusef Lateef in the band and although his stay was short-lived he made a significant contribution to this date. Lloyd soon launched his own band and went on to become one of the most popular Jazz artists of the late 60s. The rest of the band should be familiar to all: Julian "Cannonball" Adderley on alto saxophone/leader with Nat Adderley on cornet, Joe Zawinul on piano, Sam Jones on bass and Louis Hayes on drums and of course Charles Lloyd. The arrangements are by Cannonball and Joe Zawinul. Enjoy Jazz versions of this familiar and greatly loved music.

Tonight's Jazz Feature is our small celebration to Halloween as tonight is October 31st! Joseph Rudolph Jones aka "Philly Joe" a nickname he adopted to distinguish himself from the older Basie drummer Jo Jones. Philly Joe came to national fame as part of Miles Davis' "first great quintet" and became one of the most in-demand sideman and appeared on so many classic recordings in the 50s and 60s and beyond. He recorded some albums under his own name that may not be classics but are damn good! One of them is this date with tenor saxophonist fireball Johnny Griffin, trombonist Julian Priester and cornetist Nat Adderley who shines on this date. Tommy Flanagan is on piano and a young Jimmy Garrison is solid on bass. Four great tunes are featured for the band to stretch out on and the final fifth tune is called "Blues For Dracula". It's a slow blues with Philly Joe's voice overdubbed. Philly Joe does his best Bela Lugosi imitation and the slow blues turns into Blues For Dracula. Serious fun and a small tribute to Halloween. All in all a fine representative recording and a tribute to one of the most influential drummers in Modern Jazz.......Mr. Philly Joe Jones!
Cornettist Nat Adderley was a great musician who was somewhat overshadowed by his big brother Cannonball Adderley. Nat was a formidable musician oin his own right. He preferred the smaller and sharper sounding cornet to the trumpet and excelled. He put together this great band for a one night stand at an LA club called Memory Lane. His front line partner is Joe Henderson, one of the great tenor saxophonists ever. The rest of the band consists of Joe Zawinul on piano, Victor Gaskin on bass and Roy McCurdy on drums. This is a great set done with the energy that only a live audience can supply. Check it out tonight!!
Having recorded with John Lennon in 1974 on the "Walls and Bridges" album, Ron will be producing a jazz tribute to Lennon and his songs. Ron remembers recording with John Lennon and Elton John on the album Walls and Bridges and it created a longing to do a tribute album to John himself. The all-star horn section included Howard Johnson, Frank Vicari, and Steve Madeo. Ron Aprea, composer, arranger, producer, saxophonist, clarinetist, and flutist, has performed with Woody Herman, Les Elgart, Tito Puente, Frank Foster, Buddy Morrow, Billy May, Charlie Persip, Nat Adderley, Lionel Hampton, and Louis Armstrong.Ron Aprea, jazz saxophonist & arranger, been recording and producing albums for over 30 years. In 1974, I had the honor of being one of the “Little Big Horns” on John Lennon’s 1974 “Walls and Bridges” album. John was an amazing human being, and my vision is to honor the music and spirit of John Lennon with a jazz tribute album. *This album will include 12 songs, most of which are Lennon or Lennon/McCartney collaborations, with a gem by George Harrison. my “John Lennon Story” which can be read in its entirety at http://ronaprea.com/john-lennon.html *** Please make sure to check out how you can be part of this exciting project at Kickstarter!

Ron's front line on this album is Joe Magnarelli-trpt., Jerry Weldon-tenor, and Ron on alto. The rhythm section is Cecilia Coleman-piano, Tim Givens-bass, and Vince Cherico-drums. The album is a mix of originals and standards. Ron has two of his own originals, Sophia and For Pete's Sake ,for the late bassist & close friend Pete Chivily. Although none of the 12 cuts are tunes that Blakey recorded, Ron confesses that in writing for this project Blakey's Jazz Messengers kept popping into his head. when drummer Vince Cherico came to the session and asked Ron "what type of feel do you want?" Ron said one word "Blakey!" Ron is currently working on an album with vocalist Tony Yezzo. The producer is bassist Al Cardillo, who collaborated with Ron on the writing.

This well organized session featured two great Chicago-born musicians who went to the famous DuSable High School and learned the nuts and bolts of music from the redoubtable Captain Walter Dyett. Green went onto play with the great Earl Hines' band in 1943 and Ammons became a star in the famous Billy Eckstine band in 1944-45. Ammons' birthday was April 14 (1925-1974) and Green's was April 16 (1923-1977. Tonight's program broadcast on April 15 honours their birthdays. Along with trombonist Green and tenor saxophonist Ammons....two of the most recognizable voices on their horns...are cornettist Nat Adderley and the "two Franks" from the Basie band Frank Foster and Frank Wess. Both are great tenor saxophonists and Wess is also heard on flute. The rhythm section is fine with Tommy Flanagan on piano, Eddie Jones (also from the Basie band) on bass and the youngest member of the musical Heath Family, drummer Albert "Tootie" Heath. Green penned two tunes and Ammons did one and Foster contributed the opener ("Juggin' Around") and Wess contributed one plus there is a delightful version of Cannonball Adderley's tune called "Sermonette". Foster and Wess helped arrange some of the tunes . This is a well run date that doesn't sprawl and is cohesive but leaves plenty of blowing room for everyone. So HAPPY BIRTHDAY Bennie Green and Gene Ammons. This date wasn't called "The Swingin'est" for nuthin'!

This hard driving blues based modern Jazz session was co-led by two great products of a Chicago high school named DuSable which had a great music program headed by the legendary "Captain" Walter Dyett. One of the co-leaders is Bennie Green who was one of the early modern trombone masters. Although he isn't treated with the same reverence as J.J.Johnson, Bennie should be recognized as one of the pioneers of Modern Jazz. Gene Ammons is the other co-leader and he is now considered to be one of the major voices of the tenor saxophone. Gene had a huge sound and a way of playing and phrasing that has influenced scores of players. Sadly Bennie died in obscurity in 1977 and Gene passed away in 1974, finally recognized and given stature after being slagged for many years by snobby Jazz critics. Green and Ammons put together a great band for this November 1958 session. The "two Franks" from the Basie band were added in the persons of tenor saxophonist/arranger Frank Foster and tenor saxophonist/flutist Frank Wess. A great added plus was the bright, salty cornet of Nat Adderley. Tommy Flanagan is on piano, Eddie Jones on bass also from the Basie band and Albert "Tootie" Heath is on drums. The tunes are mostly blues based and easy to take but the solos are inspired and the session is coherent and has direction. A good date and a fine showcase for all the talents involved and fun to listen to!
This recording, done live at the Village Vanguard in early 1962 marked a turning point in the evolution of alto saxophone master, Cannonball Adderley's band. Adderley had a very successful quintet for a couple of years with a permanent group of players. The only change in the band was the pianist, first Bobby Timmons then Barry Harris then Walter Bishop Jr. and Victor Feldman and finally Joe Zawinul, who stayed with the Adderley organization for nine years. The next step was to add another horn to the front line, and what an addition! Yusef Lateef added not only his big toned tenor but also his flute and oboe to the mix. The Adderley Sextet was born: Julian 'Cannonball' Adderley on alto, Nat Adderley on cornet, Lateef on tenor, flute and oboe, Joe Zawinul, piano, Sam Jones on bass and Louis Hayes on drums. This recording was the debut of this group and Adderley's first live recording in New York and it cooks from bar one!
