RIP to the legends Lou Donaldson and Roy Haynes, who passed recently. I play a couple of their records on the bookends of this episode. The Lou Donaldson joint that starts things off, a cover of "Everything I Play Gonh Be Funky," reminds of my very early days of digging, finding this at an East Village bookstore in 1997 or so, and always treasuring it. I didn't get hip to Mr. Haynes later on even though I already had some of the hundreds of records that he played on in my collection. In-between, I included some of my recent digs, since it's been a while since I last recorded an episode. Thanks as always to folks tuning in - working on a few things right now, more soon! For now, dig in and go and track down more of these legendary artists' work. Tracklist: Lou Donaldson, Steve Goodman, Luiz Bonfa, Cal Green, Milt Jackson, Jackie McLean, Roy Haynes

Lou Donaldson passed away on November 10, 2024. In a career spanning more than seven decades, the alto saxophonist began as a stylist devotee to the bop of Charlie Parker, quickly evolving into a soulful and bluesy player which became his signature. Joan Watson Jones, host of the AWHY? Music feature The Jazz Room sat down to interview Lou in 2020 at Studio 952 in Harlem, New York City. In Part 1 of their interview Lou tells us how he got started in the business and why he took up the Saxophone. In Part 2 he tells us about working with Miles Davis, Jimmy Smith and offers his own observations on the future of Jazz.

«Jazz ain't dead, it just smells funny»? Jeff Mills, Neue Grafik, Prabhu Edouard and Knoel Scott talk about improvisational performance, rhythms as a form of communication and how technology is overtaking the artist. Jeff Mills started out on the Detroit techno scene in the 1980s before founding Underground Resistance with ‘Mad' Mike Banks in 1989. He left Detroit for New York in 1991 (via a residency at Berlin's mighty Tresor), to pursue a solo career and set up his own label, Axis. Since then, he's released a number of projects, including two volumes of Waveform Transmissions for Tresor; 2005's Blue Potential, a live album recorded with the 70-piece Montpelier Philharmonic Orchestra; and a new soundtrack for Fritz Lang's 1926 film Metropolis in 2000. In 2018, he set up the Afrofunk-electro-jazz ensemble Tomorrow Comes The Harvest with the late Nigerian drummer Tony Allen, and has been making music and performing with the collective ever since. Neue Grafik is a composer, producer and multi-instrumentalist making a truly unique sound. Blending hip-hop, jazz and house, his music draws a map between his African heritage, time in Paris and love of London's grime scene. Forming the Neue Grafik Ensemble at an after-hours jam session at London's Total Refreshment Centre, he's established himself as formidable force in the world of jazz. Indo-French percussionist and composer Prabhu Edouard is recognised as one of the most versatile tabla players of his generation. A student of the legendary Pandit Shankar Ghosh, he's collaborated with artists from around the world including Jean-Pierre Drouet and Laxmi Shankar, and is part of the afrofunk-electro-jazz ensemble Tomorrow Comes The Harvest. Knoel Scott is an American saxophonist and composer best known for his time with jazz collective Sun Ra Arkestra. With a career spanning more than 40 years, he's worked alongside jazz greats including Lou Donaldson and Leon Thomas. Most recently, he's released his first major studio album, Celestial with long time collaborator Marshall Allen.

Born in 1967 to the late, great bassist Jamil Nasser, Muneer 's exposure to the jazz idiom was early and powerful. In 1976, "My dad took me to see Dizzy Gillespie at the Village Gate and Dizzy blew the place apart. I had to get a trumpet and weeks later I did." In 1979, he went to the International Art of Jazz Workshop for college students. Dave Burns, a trumpeter in Gillespie's Big Band, had reservations about his age. Muneer's talent, however, overshadowed this concern. "Mr. Burns acceptance fortified my confidence and I began studying with him." Muneer also received private instruction from George Coleman, Jimmy Owens, Oliver Beener, and Webster Young. These workshops and lessons taught him the basics of jazz improvisation, which were tested at serious jam sessions conducted by Eddie Henderson, Ted Curson, Tommy Turrentine, Barry Harris, C Sharpe, and Gil Coggins. "If you couldn't play, they would bench you with quickness and give you a homework assignment." As a youngster, Muneer saw many masters in concert such as George Coleman, Randy Weston, Lou Donaldson, Woody Shaw, Roy Eldridge, and Phineas Newborn.Support the show

"40b" Pat Thomas / The Locals: The Locals Play The Music Of Anthony Braxton (Discus Music, 2021) Pat Thomas, Alex Ward, Evan Thomas, Dominic Lash, Darren Hasson-Davis. Wednesday, September 30, 2021, Mt. Airy, Philadelphia: I had the privilege to sit down and chat with drum legend, Mr. Jimmy Wormworth! Jimmy is best known for playing drums with the groundbreaking vocal jazz ensemble, Lambert, Hendricks and Ross, plus his work with Al Haig, Lou Donaldson and for being house drummer at the Five Spot in 1959. This edition of Backstage at The Enharmonic is very special, it's the first interview that I've conducted live and in person, and would like to thank bassist Mike Merritt for suggesting that I interview Jimmy, and a big thank you to James Wormworth, Jimmy's son, for helping to coordinate this session. The range of topics that we discuss are as varied as Jimmy's career: Lambert Hendricks and Ross blatant inequities in network television in the late 50s and early 60s. early influences and what inspired him to become a musician. the calling card of every jazz drummer, their ride cymbal sound. his opinions and thoughts about new music. words of wisdom for young and aspiring drummers of all ages Our interview begins in the late 50s with Jimmy's recollections of meeting Kenny Clark...
