An iconic New Zealand music school, which trained many award-winning kiwi artists, has been given a second life after being canned due to financial difficulties two years ago. Former staff from MAINZ have now launched a new school called 'Let's go music' to help fill what they say is the gap left in music education in New Zealand. Luka Forman has more.
A gap in the tertiary system is being filled once more. In 2023, Te Pukenga shut down MAINZ Music School, leaving a void for those wishing to study music. Alumni of the former school include award-winning musicians, artists, and producers like Joel Little, Gin Wigmore, and Tory Kingi. But as one door closes, another opens, and former staff are getting a new school up and running under the name ‘Let's Go Music'. Co-Director Mark Baynes told Mike Hosking the programme is designed for career musicians – the certification being a first step into the industry. Ciao and Welcome to Life in Lucca with Andrea…My guest today is Debra Fast; her story is the stuff of dreams. When Debra graduated from Music School, she embraced the opportunity to play Violin with a string quartet on Cruise ships where she met the Italian pianist, Sandro Ivo Bartoli, whom she married, and started a new life in Italy. Debra speaks about her dedication to music, and in particular, her professional career as a solo violinist. She tells a mesmerising story; I particularly found her Suono Solo project, with its links to the 18th century Lucchese composer, Geminiani, fascinating. Debra is a very talented and creative musician and her enthusiasm and encouragement extends beyond her own career to that of others, for example, you will hear about her research into female musicians from her birth country, Canada. **Debra Fast will be performing in "Lucca Classica" on the 24th of April 2025, at 3.pm at the Museo Nazionale di Villa Guinigi, Lucca.**Connect with DebraYouTube Channel: Debra Fast, Violinist https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCNx_eSIve99gUKQH9In6lKgFacebook: Debra Fast, violinist: https://www.facebook.com/debrafast.violinist/LinkedIn: Debra Fast, violinist

Emilio, Madeline, and Julian are joined by drummer Rob Mitzner to begin a new episode cycle on films featuring winners of the Best Supporting Actor or Actress Oscars, with a "View-nanimous" entry on director Damien Chazelle's 2014 breakthrough film, "Whiplash." Starring Miles Teller and J.K. Simmons, the latter of whom won the requisite Oscar, the film memorably portrays student drummer Andrew Neiman's struggle to impress his autocratic band instructor, Terence Fletcher, and the group filter their own experiences as musicians through their aptitude for cinematic detail to assess the film's spectrum of musical and emotional realism. While "Whiplash" was a hit upon release and highly lauded during awards season, it has always been polarizing among musicians, and some of those differing views are articulated in this very conversation. Plus, did anyone in the group ever have a teacher like Fletcher? Is Miles Teller's drumming accurate? And how do we interpret that unforgettable ending? Welcome to another Martial Arts Media™ Business Podcast. Today, I've got two awesome guests with me, and this is my favorite episode to be doing because it's a martial arts business case study with two amazing clients who I've known for a little over a year.Evan Whetter and Erika Graf, soon to be Erika Whetter, welcome to the show.ERICA: Thank you.EVAN: Thanks, George. It's great to be here.GEORGE: You've got a bit of an interesting story, and I want to explore both because you're long-time business owners and you're also two very well-established musicians, which I really admire because that was like part of my history for a long time in my life. Leaving school, I played drums, and I didn't want to do anything else but play drums. And I would play in cover bands and bands, and I would travel all around, and that was my thing. Until I realized I couldn't cut it as a musician, and then life took over. But you guys have really made it work, and we're going to talk about all the martial arts stuff and everything. But you also run a music school, right?
