Episode 18 - Christian Payne is a current Licensed Realtor/Broker with Indiana's leading real estate firm F.C. Tucker Company, Inc. Meridian North Office in Indianapolis. He is also the General Manager at CycleBar and understands the hustle and mindset it takes to be successful. His motto is, "every day is a school day." In his young career, Christian has spent time working as a Sports Broadcaster, Coordinator of Multimedia & Marketing, several Internship positions for companies like Adidas, Assistant Athletic Director for Marketing and Administration, and is a graduate of Denison College and holds a Master's Degree in Sports Administration/Marketing. Christian was one of the people who got me started broadcasting during my Freshman year at Dickinson College as he served as the head of Red Devil Sports Network. He is one of the reasons why I am so passionate about the media industry and we both believe that it can be a driving force for good. Throughout this episode, Christian and I talk about his motto, "every day is a school day," and why he believes that it is so important that everyone develop this mindset. If we treat every day like a school day, we will all become more well-rounded, sharper individuals, and be able to articulate different problems or scenarios and better know how to take action. Beyond that, life is so precious and short, as we also discuss in our conversation. If we truly understood that nothing is guaranteed and stopped taking things for granted, we could become far better off as a society. We also discuss both of our time as student-athletes and how neither of our experiences worked out the way we had initially thought/hoped they would. However, it was in these trying times where we came to learn how to adapt and overcome, and take each hardship as a blessing as we came closer to self-realization. This episode is jam-packed with valuable information that Christian has learned in his time since graduating from college in 2012, and I hope we can all take something away from his wisdom and experience. Thank you for downloading the pod! This is On The Fly, I’m Jon Gill and this is part 2 of my chat with my Episode 3 guest Christian Payne aka Documentally. If you haven’t heard part one then please do – it doesn’t matter what order – just know that we start this episode with number 4 and 5 of his favourite things… (1, 2, and 3 being on part one) – No.4 is “documenting” and news on an amazing online storage platform called Permanent.Org We talk about Christian's love of amateur radio, ethical working, podcasting and his weekly curated Dispatches email newsletter… a really interesting approach to sharing content, building a community and generating an income. We also mention #AudioMo which I failed to fully explain – #AudioMo is an annual audio challenge in June (founded by @ernmander on Twitter) where you share an audio clip (anything from a few seconds to a few minutes) every day for a month. I’d taken part in the video equivalent #VloMo (each November) but it was participating in #AudioMo 2019 that convinced me that I should try a longer form podcast. And here we are! You can find links to Christian’s Dispatches here: http://Documentally.net And don’t forget to catch up with him on Twitter (and Instagram): @Documentally Remember you can connect with me at MadeOnAMobile.co.uk – and if you’re interested in getting a podcast off the ground and you’d like some help by all means get in touch – quote #OnTheFlyDiscount for a cheeky 10% off podcast training through August and September. #MakeSomething Thanks again for downloading this pod! Please subscribe, comment, and share and I hope you come back for episode 8 with iPhone artist Nicki Fitz-Gerald. Quick shout out – the music you hear at the end of the pod is "Tidal Turn" by Robbie Cumming – I spoke to Robbie in Episode 6. He lives on a canal boat in the UK and has been documenting his canal journeys and life in general, living on a canal boat, for several years via his Youtube channel. So his story was picked up last year by the BBC for a TV series in the UK – series two is due out at the end of this year. So go have a listen to the chat I had with him... (once you've listened to Christian of course!)
I have mentioned Christian & his work a few times over the course of the TFM episodes. We met about 5 years ago and bonded over a love of audio that bordered on (but just managed to stay the right side) of the geeky. Through the course of many easy conversations we became friends, and Christian has offered me a lot of sage & practical advice over the last year or so. Needless to say his content is top drawer, and I was over the moon when he said I could use a recent piece of audio that he had produced as a special edition of TFM. So enjoy this bonus insight into the world of Documentally and once you have finished click https://documentally.substack.com/welcome (here) and subscribe to his newsletter...and if you can spare the cost of a hand-crafted coffee I would whole-heartedly recommend you sign-up for his audio content as well. I depend on Trust Agents to expand my listening so people like Christian Payne, Molly Wood, and Tom Merritt are essential members of my lifelong learning posse. And I let Google Podcasts download and queue up social audio from people like Simon Toon and Paul O'Mahony in the cover art.
Hey this is On The Fly with Jon Gill Where I speak to Inspiring, creative, inventive people pushing the boundaries of creativity and technology. This is episode 3 with Christian Payne aka Documentally He’s got a very varied background – He was in a band, he was a press photographer... and he’s travelled… a lot..! Now He’s settled into an equally diverse mix of journo-documen-technologist, particularly knowledgable regarding all things audio... but the bottom line is that he’s a great example of someone who has carved their own furrow and made it his job. In this episode we talk about social media, how he’s structured his business model, the secret life of his Italian grandmother… and there’s more, so much more. We said we'd keep it short but after a couple of hours we wrapped things up and I decide to cut this into two episodes. That's not to say it'll be two 60 minute runs because there's a metal/grunge music tangent that will never see the light of day. So part two will follow in a week or two..!? Song of the episode The tune for Christian is “3 is the magic number” from 1973 by Bob Dorough – you could also check out the DeLaSoul version but, for legal reasons surrounding the samples, you won’t find it streaming other than copies on YouTube. Apart from being episode three (which isn't the reason) let me know if you work it out why this song applies to Christian. There are a couple of musical-ish experimentations in this and the next episode… listen out for those! Find Christian's "Dispatches" here: https://documentally.substack.com Twitter – @Documentally Website: documentally.com We’ll talk about "Dispatches" in the next episode but I heartily recommend them. ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– Thanks so much for downloading and listening – please share, subscribe, comment, review, etc – all most welcome and greatly appreciated. This episode was recorded in the cafe of the Consultants Private Clinic, in University College Hospital - on Tuesday 23 April 2019. "Has Ireland become a coffee nation?" asked Roger (Overall). In 2001, it was all tea, no proper coffee, only Maxwell House instant coffee. By 2019, coffee is a "licence to print money" asserts Paul (O'Mahony). You hear chat about Apple, IBM, Barry's Tea, Lyons Tea, Bewley's Coffee, green beans and IREL Coffee. You hear Roger mention Christian Payne - and Paul mention Chris Brogan. ... Roger made a video about coffee for a coffee haus called FILTER : "how FILTER make coffee in a glass contraption." The key messages were "Come here - we'll take you to a different level... "We educate you, we make you more interesting, more attractive ... "You have an experience others haven't had ... new, different, exotic ... As a result Viewers became more educated. They became more resourceful They became more attractive In other words - viewers became more powerful Maybe the video was a success? ... "I am a flame-thrower" says Paul ______________ Your video for FILTER may have been a flop ... If the people there didn't get the video out to the right people... ______________ The key question is : what is the video for? why are you telling this story? ______________ MEASUREMENT "I find measurement boring" confesses Paul "I prefer to get other people to do the measuring." _______________ You can't be sure what will happen. Luck and the role of good fortune; You can succeed and you can fail there can be accident and there can be design. You can succeed by design You can succeed by accident You can fail by accident You can fail by design. ________________ Did coffee in Ireland succeed by accident or by design? "Let's just drink more coffee" Find Paul at Show & Tell Communications or phone him up. Paul's poetry is at paulhomahony.com ________________ Paul will improve these notes. He lost lots of notes when his laptop had a glitch.
Apart form a sharp mind and some tough questions, the most important thing for any journalist is the contents of the bag slung over their shoulder - choose well and you can tell any story, anywhere in the world, for hours at a time without running out of power. Choose badly, and you can end up talking to yourself while history is made in front of you. Christian Payne (aka @Documentally) is a former professional photographer who now tells stories in any medium you can mention, and he is forever pushing the boundaries of what is possible to bring recipients as close as they can to the action. When not teaching others how to capture the world around him he can be found in his shed writing, sipping a good whiskey and endlessly packing and repacking his bag while dreaming up new ways to tell stories.

James Phelan got the chance to sit down and interview Christian Payne regarding the technologies and developments of mobile journalism.
Christian Payne enters the Customs Office. According to The Next Web Christian Payne is a ‘Professional Over Sharer’. If you read The Guardian he is a “Blogger prone to random acts of journalism”. Christian aka @Documentally specialises in creative technology and sharing stories with networked devices. He says: “I travel light and work fast. This is a special episode of the podcast. So special that it's being released ahead of the usual slot and before another interview that was already in the queue. The reason is twofold. First the photographer interviewed is a remarkable man who went out of his way (and possibly into harm's way) to tell a remarkable story: Christian Payne. Online, many know Christian as Documentally, a storyteller who uses multiple online platforms to tell his own story and that of his clients. He does exciting things for interesting clients. I first became aware of him when he travelled from Land's End to John o' Groats (the UK's famed tip to top journey) with nothing but online airtime to offer those who gave him rides, shelter and food. That alone should give you an idea of the person he is. He does things most of us wouldn't. One thing he did very recently was travel to Turkey and Syria. He wanted to find out first hand how the war was affecting regular Syrians – people like you and me. In this interview, recorded only a couple of days after he got back, you'll hear of his experiences – some of which were disturbing and harrowing. Christian isn't a hardened news or war photographer who spends lots of time on the ground in conflict zones. That's what makes his story even more powerful. He is a regular guy whose conscience made him team up with a journalist friend (Phil Sands) to see for himself what is going on away from the news agenda of the big media outlets. The second reason why this interview is special is that it will have a follow on. Something good will happen because of the work Christian has done. You'll hear reference to that at the end of the episode. I'm hoping you and I can help raise money for the refugees in Syria. It's early stages yet, but watch this space.
