An unearthed skull, a murder confession, and a perfectly preserved corpse from 2,000 years ago — the moss may be quiet, but it never forgets.Darkness Syndicate members get the ad-free version of #WeirdDarkness: https://weirddarkness.com/syndicateIN THIS EPISODE: An Oklahoma man strangles his fishing buddy to death… and then blames it on Bigfoot! We begin with that story! (Bigfoot Killed My Fishing Buddy) *** As you know, I'm not just a podcaster but also a professional voice artist. One of the many things I do is narrating audio books. But up until recently I had no idea who some of my competition was for narrations. It turns out the voice behind many best-selling audiobooks is actually a serial killer. (Murderous Narration) *** Reports of werewolves are worldwide throughout history – from the English moors to the western United States you can find sightings of dogmen, werewolves, and the like. But Louisiana has one of the most interesting entries into Lycanthropy – at least it has an interesting name and history. It's called the Rougarou. (Rougarou) *** X-ray photos are fascinating, but they are only for the eyes – not the ears, right? Well don't be too sure about that. People in the Soviet Union found a very unique way to use X-rays in order to smuggle in their favorite tunes from West! (Bone Music) *** He roams the earth, and has done so for the past 2,000 years.. doomed never to die until the end of the world. His crime? Taunting Jesus at the Crucifixion. Is this simply an urban legend, or could there be some truth behind what has come to be known as “The Curse of the Wandering Jew?” (The Curse of the Wandering Jew) *** In 1922, Charles Osbourne was in an accident involving a hog… but that's not the strange part. It's the after-effects of that accident which caused him to continue to hiccup non-stop for almost seven decades! (My Hog Gave Me The Hiccups For 68 Years) *** In the 1980s workers in an English peat bog unearthed a body. And then another… and then yet another, and another… all apparent victims of violence. In the cold, unforgiving lands where folklore and fear intertwine, tales of werewolves have haunted the imaginations of villagers for centuries. But what happens when these legends step out of the shadows and into real history?IN THIS EPISODE: We're all familiar with the concept of werewolves – they are all over pop culture, movies, television, comic books, novels, and every other medium you could possibly imagine. And while they are considered fictional, or at least in the realm of cryptids, that doesn't mean there aren't true stories of reported werewolves in history. (Real Historic Accounts of Werewolves) *** Just the idea of going to prison is enough to scare people into living a squeaky-clean life, but if you're one of the most dangerous prisoners known to exist, ordinary prison would look like a vacation as compared to life in the Florence ADX Supermax Prison. Think you can handle a werebear hug? Or maybe you're just here for the were-rat cheese jokes? This week on the RPGBOT.Podcast, we're going fur-deep into lycanthropes in D&D and Pathfinder! From the terrifying to the downright ridiculous, we're talking werewolves, were-tigers, and, yes, even were-penguins. Brace yourself for: Full-moon transformation tips Curing curses (spoiler: wolfsbane doesn't smell great) Debates on infinite polymorph (trust us, it's a thing) And a healthy dose of “What on earth were they thinking?” were-creatures Tune in, laugh with us, and maybe howl at the moon a little. Summary In this beastly episode of the RPGBOT.Podcast, the hosts go fur-deep into the intricate and endlessly entertaining world of lycanthropes in D&D and Pathfinder! Dive in as they explore everything from the mythic origins to the quirky mechanics of these furry (and occasionally ferocious) creatures. Werewolves? Check. Werebears? Absolutely. Were-rats and were-tigers? You bet! They tackle the unique alignments, behaviors, and lore for each type, uncovering surprising personality traits—who knew a werebear's alignment could be so… complex? But it's not all snarls and bites. The hosts serve up plenty of laughs as they debate the absurdity of “lesser-known” werecreatures found in games like Dwarf Fortress. Who wouldn't want to face off with a were-penguin or a were-carp? They delve into the gameplay challenges of becoming a werecreature, including the dreaded curse, healing dilemmas, and whether the whole “infinite polymorph” theory is a brilliant hack or a cursed nightmare for DMs everywhere. From strategies for curing lycanthropy to tips for players eager to bring their inner were-creature to life, this episode packs in all the storytelling and character-building advice you need to make lycanthropy a howling success in your campaign. It's filled with insights, clever lore, and plenty of tabletop antics, so tune in, grab your wolfsbane, and prepare for a conversation that's part D&D myth and part midnight monster mash-up. Warning: May cause uncontrollable howling and urges to challenge nearby werebears to arm-wrestling. D&D and Pathfinder offer unique mechanics for lycanthropy, with natural lycanthropes having more transformation control. Werebears are portrayed as nature's reclusive guardians, while were-rats and were-tigers have surprising alignments and clan dynamics. Lycanthropy's alignment shifts and curse mechanics add complexity to character arcs, often sparking moral dilemmas. Infinite polymorph mechanics and silver's role in combat highlight the quirks of playing (and fighting!) lycanthropes. Pathfinder allows for more player lycanthropy options, while D&D's lycanthropes lean toward evil alignments and Constitution-based curse resistance. Humorous moments—like Dwarf Fortress's random were-creatures—shine a light on the creativity of game lore and design. Hosts emphasize consent in curse-spreading, while cures like Belladonna add urgency and spice to the challenge. Lycanthropy creates both low-level threats and high-level triviality, urging balance between storytelling and gameplay simplicity. We'll look at the origins of the werewolf, look at whether they are actually real, and if so, how one goes about becoming one, and some of the cures believed to release the man from the beast. Of course, it's not always the Wolf-Man… sometimes it's the Wolf-Woman. We'll look at the most fearsome lady werewolves throughout history! I'll tell you about the trials and punishments of those convicted of being werewolves – many probably wish they'd have confessed to being witches instead! Plus, what if I was to tell you that werewolves truly ARE real – and that a small village has been terrorized by them for decades – right up to modern day? There is convincing evidence to back up my claim! All of this and more werewolfism can be found in this episode! Could the rare convergence of a super blue moon, a moonbow, and the ancient curse of lycanthropy be more than just myth and legend? Is there a deeper, hidden connection between these celestial events and the primal forces that shape our world? As we explore these questions, we might uncover a reality where the boundaries between science and the supernatural are thinner than we ever imagined.LIVE ON Digital Radio! http://bit.ly/3m2Wxom or http://bit.ly/40KBtlWhttp://www.troubledminds.org Support The Show!https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/troubled-minds-radio--4953916/supporthttps://ko-fi.com/troubledmindshttps://rokfin.com/creator/troubledmindshttps://patreon.com/troubledmindshttps://www.buymeacoffee.com/troubledmindshttps://troubledfans.comFriends of Troubled Minds! - https://troubledminds.org/friendsShow Schedule Sun-Mon-Tues-Wed-Thurs 7-10pstiTunes - https://apple.co/2zZ4hx6Spotify - https://spoti.fi/2UgyzqMTuneIn - https://bit.ly/2FZOErSTwitter/X - https://bit.ly/2CYB71U----------------------------------------https://troubledminds.org/lycanthropy-and-lunar-magic-once-in-a-blue-moon/https://www.deseret.com/lifestyle/2024/08/19/blue-supermoon-august-2024/https://www.livescience.com/planet-earth/weather/rare-moonbows-light-up-night-sky-across-us-as-blue-supermoon-rises-and-you-could-still-spot-another-onehttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moonbowhttps://www.almanac.com/moonbowshttps://tolkiengateway.net/wiki/Thr%C3%B3r%27s_Maphttps://lord-of-the-rings.fandom.com/wiki/Moon-lettershttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clinical_lycanthropyhttps://mythology.net/mythical-creatures/werewolf/https://www.smithsonianmag.com/history/beast-gevaudan-terrorized-france-countryside-180963820/

Steve Ward and Barbara Fisher bring you a talk about Dogmen, Werewolves, and Lycanthropy. From Barbara"Part man part canine or something even more mysterious? We're talking about bipedal, possibly shape-shifting paranormal canids. At least, to Steve and I. We start with Dogmen and the Beast of Bray Road, and the investigations and books by the late great Linda Godfrey. She really brought the idea of dogman into public consciousness, especially in the United States. After that, Steve tells about UK researcher Paul Sinclair and his documentary Wolf Lands. And of course, we talk about anomalous lights and how they relate to these paranormal bipedal canids. Yep, Anomalous. Lights. Dogmen. Werewolves and Lycanthropy. They all go together."
IN THIS EPISODE: An Oklahoma man strangles his fishing buddy to death… and then blames it on Bigfoot! Cee the Superior re-enters the Garden (totally as a cohost) and does her usual spectacular job of studying the history, literature and trends of the given topic. This episode is werewolves. From pre-history relationships between wolves and humans (who domesticated who?) to the earliest know literature (The Epic of Gilgamesh), to the present day, we give the history, lore, historicity, literature and pop consumption trends of everyone's favorite lycanthrope. Yes, we study the origin of that term and address the recognized disease of Lycanthropy. From Pliny to Ovid to Stephanie Meyer and "Gingersnaps", we are cooking with gas. We also discuss what might be werewolf stories or characters without being overtly called such. Beware the moors, but don't beware the Garden.

Welcome to Phantoms & Monsters 'Personal Reports' - cryptid & unexplained accounts directly from the archives of Phantoms & Monsters, and the Phantoms & Monster Fortean Research team. Narrated by Lon Strickler. Join us in the chat, discuss, and ask me questions about the accounts. Featured in this edition: Popular shapeshifting creatures in folklore and legend are werewolves and vampires, as well as gods, goddesses, and demons. Lycanthropy is classified as a mental disorder in which the victim believes that they are a wolf or some other nonhuman animal. There are also metamorphs, in which a living being changes into a known or cryptid entity. An example of this phenomenon is when a Navajo native practitioner transforms into a magical being, or Skinwalker, with evil intentions using witchcraft. While the popular idea of a shapeshifter is of a human being who turns into something else, there are numerous stories about animals that can transform themselves as well. The following accounts include a mix of supernatural shapeshifters, though some of these examples are not well-known. So relax, listen to the reports, and make your assessment as to the nature of these transformed entities. If you have questions, feel free to post them in the live chat. I will do my best to answer each inquiry. Hi. My name is Lon Strickler. I hope that you enjoy listening to Phantoms & Monsters Personal Reports. I have a question for you. In this week's episode, Rowan explores the lore of lycanthropes–those unfortunate souls who transform into wolves under the full moon. We explore numerous versions of werewolf mythology, the way these stories were used against innocents throughout history, how modern medicine has affected the discussion, and ways someone might gain this transformative power.SourcesWikipediahttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Werewolf#:~:text=A%20peak%20of%20attention%20to,imprisonment%20in%20Bordeaux%20in%201603.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Stumpphttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Therianthropyhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clinical_lycanthropyhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anthropomorphism#:~:text=Anthropomorphism%20in%20literature%20and%20other,interpretation%20of%20humanity%20through%20anthropomorphism.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nebuchadnezzar_IIhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_StumppThe History Channelhttps://www.history.com/topics/folklore/history-of-the-werewolf-legendThe Conversationhttps://theconversation.com/the-ancient-origins-of-werewolves-104775The Gospel Coalitionhttps://www.thegospelcoalition.org/article/understanding-daniel-4/International Wolf Centerhttps://wolf.org/wolf-info/factsvsfiction/what-is-surplus-killing/Youtubehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YXMo5w9aMNs&ab_channel=NatGeoWILDLive Sciencehttps://www.livescience.com/24412-werewolves.htmlPubMedhttps://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/10364725/How Stuff Workshttps://science.howstuffworks.com/science-vs-myth/strange-creatures/werewolf.htm

In this week's show, we kick off the Halloween season with a deep-dive on the culturally diverse phenomena of the werewolf, its profoundly ancient origins and how it evolved into the beloved horror trope we enjoy today. In the free section of the show we discuss its ancient association with war, rites of passage, its adoption into pagan mythology, the medieval Christian witch-hunts and the important role it played in secret shamanic folk practices from all over the European continent. In the extended version of the show we discuss the good werewolves or Benandanti as they fought evil witches of Satan, how this deeply confused the inquisitors who recorded it, how medical lycanthropy works, the multiple ancient eye-witness accounts of dog-headed people from around the world, early esoteric Christianity, the cenocephaly of Saint Christopher and what it all has to do with the Egyptian deities Anubis and of course Wepwawet. Welcome to Oaktober Fest, our annual celebration of spooky season lasting the entire month of October! In this episode we cover stories of lycanthropy, the belief that one can transform into a wolf. Before the Salem Witch trials, the Werewolf Trials were paving the way across Europe. Lycanthropy is not a new concept but was originally in the works as early as 2,100 BC. The true werewolf hunt, though, began in earnest in the 15th and 16th centuries. We will cover the historical lives, trials and punishments of Peter Stump, Gilles Garnier, and a more recent case of Manuel Blanco Romasanta who became Spain's first documented serial killer known as the Werewolf of Allariz. Regardless of the originating culture, folklore is replete with tales of shape-shifting monstrosities and individuals morphing into werewolves or other half-man, half-beast creatures. But what about the more contemporary narratives? Is there more to it than folklore? In this episode, we look at these legendary beings and ponder Navajo encounters, the enigmatic stories surrounding Tasmania's thylacine, and even nocturnal encounters with gargoyle women in black. Our exploration takes us into the secretive realms of cults dedicated to summoning monsters, the occult dealings involving British intelligence agencies, shape-shifting witch cats, and a plethora of other intriguing encounters. For our Plus+ members, we investigate the controversial linguistic origins of the concept of the Aryans and explore their migration into the cradle of civilization in India, from which their influence radiated to the far reaches of the globe. We examine the intriguing connections between enigmatic stone towers, celestial constellations, and hear the theories of a man deeply fixated on phallus energies. Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for October 31, 2022 is: lycanthropy lye-KAN-thruh-pee noun Lycanthropy refers to the power or ability to take the shape and characteristics of a wolf through witchcraft or magic. It can also mean “a delusion that one has become a wolf.” // The 1941 film The Wolf Man starred Lon Chaney, Jr., as a man cursed with lycanthropy. Sink your teeth into the entry > Examples: “In Marvel comics lore, Jack Russell on his 18th birthday learned of his family's lycanthropy curse, which ... every full moon transforms Jack into a powerful man-wolf hybrid possessing enhanced strength, speed, stamina, agility and reflexes.” — Matt Webb Mitovich, TVLine.com, 12 Sept. 2022 Did you know? Whether about Zeus punishing King Lycaon for trickery or a perfectly coiffed werewolf drinking a piña colada in a London bar, tales of lycanthropy—the transformation of a person into a wolf or wolf-like creature—have captivated imaginations for millennia. The word lycanthropy comes from the Greek words lykos, meaning “wolf,” and anthrōpos, meaning “human being.” Halloween, the time of year when you're most likely to encounter a lycanthropic individual (or several), also happens to be the perfect occasion to drop such etymological knowledge on their tufted little ears. You know, as a treat.
