It helps us so much when you do! He grew up in the Queen City and is a self proclaimed theater nerd but not the kind you might think. Nick Melnyk took a chance in college and attended his first cycling class at the school's rec center. Monica the instructor, and bikes that go nowhere awakened his love of movement and nothing was ever the same after that.He began teaching various fitness formats and during his last college year heard about a new boutique studio opening and he applied to be front desk and instructor. It just so happened to be the very first CycleBar. Nick immediately fell in love with the community and after graduating in 2015 he joined the original CycleBar Franchising corporate team, taking the brand from 3 locations to the international brand it is today. As a FitPro Nick made his mark in the Cincinnati fitness scene as what was known as a CycleStar in those days, at Shred415 and other local studios. His experience both as a FitPro and working in Operations as he helped others open studios across the country gave him unique insight into the do's and don'ts of studio ownership. He knew early on that being an instructor would never be enough and studio ownership was his destiny. From investors, to partnerships that dissolved, to the increasingly high costs of opening a studio Nick was derailed from his dream time and time again but he did not give up. In February of 2023 Nyxx Studio opened in the community that raised this resilient FitPro. They offer rhythm based cycling classes and strength classes coming Spring 2024. The Cabin is presented by the Wisconsin Counties Association and this week we're featuring Polk County: https://bit.ly/3OELsFN The Cabin is also brought to you by Group Health Trust: https://bit.ly/3JMizCX Campfire Conversation: In this episode of The Cabin, Ana, Eric, and Jake welcome 2024 and divvy up some resolutions in the areas of giving, healthier living, and healthier eating, respectively. Ana focuses on giving more in 2024 and explores a variety of interesting charitable events and organizations. She goes to Lake Geneva to explore things like the Mr. Lake Geneva Pageant, where men compete pageant-style to benefit area nonprofits as well as charity events centered around golf, biking, and more. She explores Cycling Without Age, an organization that provides rides to elderly people in need - it started in Denmark and now has chapters in 39 countries, including the US and Wisconsin. DoorTran, a transportation service in Door County, does similar work in Wisconsin's most famous peninsula. Conservation alliances in Wisconsin advance the quality of life in communities as well as the environment, and Ana shares the one in Sauk Prairie, which is also active in revamping the former Badger Army Ammunition Plant grounds. Serving as a mentor is another wonderful way to “pay it forward,” and programs like the Outagamie County Mentoring Program illustrate these benefits. She also discusses a variety of walks and runs, galas, interesting contests, festivals and more that benefit communities across the state. VolunteerMatch.org provides a good resource for finding some of them.Eric dives into some unique Wisconsin workouts and ways to get in better shape for 2024(hey, he tries every year) and some of those workouts include yoga with goats or alpacas - oddly soothing for some reason; curling and ice skating in winter; pole fitness; bungee workouts at places like Swoop; TRX and cycle workouts at places like CycleBar, Spire, and Barre Code; and unique spots like Bounce Trampoline at Hometown Pilates in Fitchburg, which combines dance, music and bounce for a full cardio workout, and also helps with balance and coordination and studies have shown bounce is good for lymph circulation. More fun than your usual regular run or some sit-ups!Jake discusses food as part of his resolution, and covers examples of places around the state where you can eat healthier. Places around the state are now offering fresher and healthier grab-and-go meals and you can find them at markets like The Farmacy in Green Bay, co-ops like Willy Street in Madison, People's Co-Op in La Crosse, and Outpost Natural Foods, which has multiple locations around Milwaukee, and more. Farmers markets have greatly multiplied in number across the state where you can get fresh-grown food from area farms, bakers, and more; they're often a great way to kick off your weekend. Many of these markets take place in the warmer months, but more and more communities have winter markets indoors. Jake also drops some favorites across the state, including Downtown Grocery in Wausau; Thai Basil in Madison; Subhouse in Hudson, and Island Cafe in Minocqua, where you'll find a Mediterranean menu amidst an area primarily known for pub food and fish fries in the great North Woods. He provides a nice blueprint for places that offer that combination of tasty cuisine and better nutrition many of us want.Hope your New Year's resolutions work well and you have a happy, healthy 2024! VOTE FOR ME TO BECOME A HOTWORX VIRTUAL INSTRUCTOR! Have you ever had a gut feeling to go down a new path? Life and transformation is all about following your gut and the bread crumbs along the way that can led to opportunities you never thought possible. Being a group fitness instructor as certainly opened up new opportunities in my life that I never expected (like auditioning to become a HOTWORX VIRTUAL INSTRUCTOR!) and it all started with a gut feeling, a decision to take action and just watching what unfolds from there. I would have never gone down this path or had the confidence to if not for daily movement and showing myself what I'm capable of in a workout and how that applies to life as well. And that's exactly what we're chatting about today with our guest, HOTWORX VIRTUAL INSTRUCTOR, Ashlee Buchert. I met Ashlee virtually as a virtual instructor on the screen at HOTWORX and loved her teaching style and how she could relate to me through the screen (very important as an online or virtual fitness instructor!) Once I started to follow her on social, I realized she and I share a lot of the same beliefs and even some similar backgrounds (I too taught Insanity, cycleBar and she set foot inside of my HOTWORX home studio!) and I loved how small moments in her life, small decisions lead down a path she never could have dreamed of and I thought you would appreciate this message as well! Fitness can do that for you too not just as a instructor, but as a participant showing yourself what you are capable of and how that applies to your LIFE. This is an inspiring story of being open to opportunities, listening to your gut and following the bread crumbs along the way to and how that can impact not only your lives but others as well. THANK YOU AGAIN FOR YOUR VOTES FOR ME TO BECOME A HOTWORX VIRTUAL INSTRUCTOR! The indoor rowing machine - or erg - has been in use since the fourth century when an Athenian Admiral created a rudimentary version to train his army. And since, innovators from Concept2 helped to commercialize the indoor rowing machine and CrossFit got millions of people across the world onto the erg in their intense workouts. And this week on the podcast, I spoke with two innovators who helped take rowing from the corner of the gym floor to the center of a workout.Debra Strougo and Eric Von Frohlich, are the husband and wife team who created Row House in 2014. Their mission was to bring the sport of rowing to the masses and make it accessible. They saw the sport as accessible to all entry points into fitness, whether you're just starting out on a fitness journey or whether you're an olympic rower looking for somewhere to practice. And to hear them tell it, they crafted their own education to learn the ins and outs of studio fitness after writing down what would become the plan to build Row House on a napkin. They dug into studio management and operations in a way that they hadn't learned when they met working at Equinox in New York City. And this week on the podcast, they take us through that whole journey of ideating, building the brand in New York City, and inevitably selling their business to Xponential Fitness - the franchising brand that also owns Pure Barre, Rumble, Cycle Bar, AKT, Stretch Lab, Stride, Yoga six and Club Pilates. And, just for listening, you can get a free first class at your nearest Row House, simply download the Row House app and click try a class. Are you interested in changing your habits? Have you been struggling to figure out what path to take? Today, I talk with Karen Maxwell. Kinisi Performance was founded by Karen "Kmax" Maxwell, Senior Master Instructor and Director of Training at CycleBar, the premier name in indoor cycling. Kmax oversees over 2000 instructors worldwide while teaching multiple classes a week, giving her a unique perspective on the fitness landscape and culture. Kinisi is a reflection of that perspective, offering products that support and represent the SweatLife. We discuss being vulnerable, and why owning who you are is the most impactful thing you can do. Karen also shares the importance of not getting up comparing yourself to others and taking some time to make sure you know what you really want in life. Questions I asked: How did you become the director of training at CycleBar? What made the difference for CycleBar to survive COVID? Why is connection so important? How do you deal with comparison and owning who we are? Why are influencers online not the reality for most people? Why is it important to be vulnerable to connect with people? How does storytelling impact us? Why is there no such thing as a timeline you need to follow? How do you let your children have room to make their own decisions? How does being fit and strong inside and out empower you? Why is it important to have your energy in the right place? Can you tell us where to find you, and what your business is? Topics Discussed: Health. Mindset. Managing stress. Finding your passion. Vulnerability. Group Fitness Coaching. Comparison. Connection. Quotes from the show: “I'm tired of people telling me NO, I'm a YES girl.” Karen Maxwell @SisterhoodSweat “We need connection and interaction and human to human exchange.” Karen Maxwell @SisterhoodSweat “I didn't figure out my passion until my 30s, and I was seeing other people doing it sooner.” Karen Maxwell @SisterhoodSweat “It takes work to be able to avoid comparison.” Karen Maxwell @SisterhoodSweat “Life is too short to let comparisons drag you down.” Karen Maxwell @SisterhoodSweat How you can stay in touch with Karen: https://www.instagram.com/kmaxthecat/ https://www.kinisiperformance.com/ Use KMAX20 for 20% off! https://www.facebook.com/kinisiperformance How you can stay in touch with Linda: Website Facebook Twitter Instagram Pinterest YouTube SoundCloud "Proud Sponsors of the Sisterhood of S.W.E.A.T" Essential Formulas

While working as Fit Pro full time, she was a lead instructor for CYCLEBAR overseeing the training and development of other instructors.Currently she guides burnt out professionals to gain their fire and confidence back with high energy bodyweight training through her brand ELEVATE BODY. Click here or on the image below for all the details and to grab this value packed free training! What We Cover in This Week's Episode: Samantha's personal experience with diet culture,How nutritional education is sending out mixed messages,The process of removing shame from fitness,The journey of transforming her cycle studio into a safe space for women to move freely,& Reframing the purpose of exercise and dispelling that it is solely a tool for weight loss. Samantha Barash is an intuitive eating registered dietitian and the owner of Tap Into Nutrition, a nutrition counseling service dedicated to supporting individuals to cultivate a healthy relationship with food and their bodies. Tap Into Nutrition utilizes a non-diet, weight-inclusive, Health at Every Size approach to empower their clients to break free from chronic dieting and understand nutrition in a gentle, evidence-based approach that emphasizes mental health as just as important as physical health. During 1-on-1 individualized sessions, Samantha works with her clients to dive deep into their nutrition and dieting history to unlearn old mindsets. She will guide your journey to find peace with food while simultaneously becoming your healthiest self. Samantha Barash earned her Bachelor's of Science in Dietetics from Michigan State University and then went off to complete her accredited internship at Wayne State University. When Sam isn't supporting her clients to navigate their plates from a non-diet approach, she can be found motivating riders as the lead instructor at CycleBar in Troy, Michigan. With Sam's guidance, CycleBar in Troy has been able to cultivate an inclusive fitness space, welcoming to all identities, body sizes and fitness levels. As a registered dietitian and fitness professional, Samantha approaches her work from a “what can we add” vs. “what are we taking away” mentality. You can find her on instagram @tapintonutrition and @samanthabarash and on her website at www.tapintonutrition.net “You have permission to do what your body is asking for.”- Samantha Barash, RD Main Takeaways From This Episode Shame shouldn't be used as a facilitator of change in nutrition or movement.Try reframing your mindset around exercise from "I'm doing this to create physical change" to "I'm showing up for my mental health and clarity."People want to feel welcomed and like they belong, so creating a safe space for women to move freely is crucial to inclusive and supportive fitness.Give yourself permission to do what your body is asking for and to move in a way your body wants. Are you one of the people who believes financial freedom is born out of luck?Like some crazy lottery, some people are just born in places where high-value commodities are in abundance and just sells on their own. We're talking about those who just stumbled upon diamond caves, gold mines, and oil.To most people, having to work minimum wage means they lost the lottery. But to some people, it's exactly that kind of experience that makes them “lucky”. It's down on the ground where people find so many opportunities! That's how Strickland Brother's 10 Minute Oil Change, a one-stop-shop franchise for oil change and other professional automotive maintenance and services, was born! Hear the story straight from Justin Strickland and Lisa Palmer!Justin Strickland started in the industry in 2012 as a minimum wage hood technician working for Express Oil Change and Tire Engineers. After a year, he began working for Jiffy Lube as District Sales & Operations Manager. Through the floor level experience with customers, he felt like there was a better way of doing things. And so, he formed a business plan and proposed his idea to several venture capital firms and lenders in which he was denied funding numerous times. Justin's grandfather collateralized the family home to fund his grandson's vision with a $35,000 HELOC loan. From this, the company has grown to nearly 100 open units and 200+ more committed units to open.Lisa Palmer is the Director of Franchise Development for Strickland Brother's. She has extensive background in sales and marketing, beginning her career with Express Scripts as a proposal writer, before moving to a sales coordinator position. In 2008, she opened her own business, PerforMax Fitness Professionals. She's also a CycleBar franchisee, owning 2 studios in Charlotte, NC.Luck is where you're willing to look. Justin might not have struck fossil fuel but his idea about the oil change business is GOLD!Ready to make your own “luck” through Franchising?Tune in to our Podcast to learn more about everything you WANT and NEED on franchising, investment, financing processes and options. This is Eye On Franchising, where we share our vision for your franchise future. https://www.facebook.com/lance.graulichhttps://ionfranchising.com/
