In this episode of THE MENTORS RADIO, Host Tom Loarie talks with veteran sportscaster Matt Morrison, author of “Touched: The Marin Morrison Story,” about the difficult, unvarnished truths so many families face in silence. When Matt’s 14-year-old daughter, Marin—a record-breaking competitive swimmer—was diagnosed with a rare, aggressive brain tumor, their family’s world changed forever. Through multiple brain surgeries, a stroke, and partial paralysis, Marin’s unyielding spirit and faith propelled her all the way to competing for Team USA at the 2008 Beijing Paralympics. They discuss the Crucible of Crisis (how extreme medical trauma placed immense strain on his 23-year marriage), Reinventing Identity (losing his broadcasting career at the height of the crisis and swallowing his pride to wash windows just to keep his family afloat), “Mystic Fortitude” (what Marin’s unshakeable grit, humor and connection with God can teach all of us about facing life’s impossible hurdles), and The Shared Death Experience (the spiritually profound moment at his daughter’s passing that gave Matt permanent peace and an unwavering perspective on life and loss). If you are currently navigating a career transition, dealing with family hardship or seeking a deeper sense of perspective and hope, this episode is a must-listen! SHOW NOTES: MATT MORRISON: BIO: Veteran sports broadcaster Matt Morrison spent more than 35 years working in television and radio across five decades and nine states—anchoring major markets for networks including Fox Sports Net. But while his professional life was front and center under the bright stadium lights, his private family life was entering a parent’s worst nightmare. Matt’s uncommonly vibrant 14-year-old daughter, Marin, a record-breaking competitive swimmer, was suddenly diagnosed with an aggressive, rare form of brain cancer. Through multiple surgeries, a stroke, and partial paralysis, her unshakeable spirit drove her all the way to competing for Team USA at the 2008 Paralympics in Beijing. But the immense pressure of terminal illness did not leave the family unscathed—it shattered a 23-year marriage and fundamentally altered Matt’s life path. Matt has captured this journey in his tribute book, Touched: The Marin Morrison Story. He joins us today to share the hard truths about marital stress, professional identity loss, and a supernatural “shared death experience” that left him with permanent spiritual peace. Rugby League, international cricket, the Olympics, Super Rugby – you name it, Laura McGoldrick is there. She's one of the country's best-known broadcasters, and has had quite a diverse career, working as a TV presenter, radio host, MC, and an actress. McGoldrick has just returned from the official ICC broadcast of the Women's T20 World Cup, and joined Jack Tame for a chat about her life as a sport's broadcaster. "I don't think sport's going anywhere,” she told Tame. “It's the freest entertainment you can get, and I think one of the things I love so much about it is that I can turn up on any given day, and I have absolutely no idea what's going to happen, and neither do you as the viewer.” “That's what makes it very exciting.” LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
The Black Caps have scored a come-from-behind 2-1 test series win over England. Sealed by a 160-run game three win, New Zealand's victory over England is just the second time in their 96-year history they've pulled something like this off to win a series in the longest format. NZME sports broadcaster Andrew Alderson says everyone in the squad contributed to the big win in some way. "It's a real tribute to Latham, he took this team to win the unprecedented three-nil victory in India - and now this two-one victory in England." I'm half-Welsh. My dad hails from cwmbran. And so presenting on Sky Sports News as Wales wound their way in magical fashion to the semi-finals of Euro 2016 is a treasured memory. A special summer - counterbalanced by the fact that I'm half-English and Wayne's Rooney's Three Lions were dumped out by Iceland in ignominious fashion. Ouch. That still hurts. But it was also a special time for the country Wales knocked out in the last-16 stage: Northern Ireland. It was their first and only, to date, time at The European Championship. Paul Gilmour was a firsthand bystander to the squad's exploits in qualifying and then in the tournament itself in France. He was the dedicated team reporter for Sky Sports News. It would have been a memorable assignment for any football person. But particularly poignant for Paul who hails from Northern Ireland. He wasn't born when his country qualified for the 1958 and 1982 World Cups. He was barely born when they made the World Cup in Mexico in 86. But in 2016 he was front and centre to cover a joyous time for his country. The team won only one of four games played in the tournament but made indelible memories, particularly the cacophonous singing of ‘Will Grigg is on fire!” Even though Grigg didn't get on the pitch during Euro 2016! It's a classic old school soccer story. But a very human one too. Hope you enjoy!Go well and keep moving, Teddy********Partner Details Chief Sponsor: Bang & Olufsen Cheltenham: https://stores.bang-olufsen.com/en/united-kingdom/cheltenham/unit-15-the-courtyard-montpellier-streetInfo on Sponsor Offerings: For 15% off Herring Shoes enter the code SPORTANDLIFE at checkout at - https://www.herringshoes.co.ukFor 30% off Cytoplan supplements for your first purchase at https://www.cytoplan.co.uk and a 10% discount ongoing: Check out the intro to the podcast. For a 10% discount with GHS Cheltenham Clinics' Health Checks - https://ghsclinics.health, contact me: teddy@drapermedia.co.uk
