Joining us today is Meghan Chen, Digital Assets Strategist, who walks us through what's currently happening in the digital assets markets and what is driving crypto assets higher despite the negative headlines. Meghan speaks to Colin Randall, Director of Research and says January saw a strong start for crypto with Bitcoin and Ether prices going up. She explains crypto prices have rebounded this year for two reasons. She notes risk assets performed well in January, as well as stocks and the NASDAQ creating a general tailwind for crypto. Also the collapse of regional banks in the US also created a spike in Bitcoin. When vulnerabilities arise in the traditional finance system, they tend to be a tailwind for crypto prices. Especially for Bitcoin as it is the largest and most established cryptocurrency. Recorded on May 5, 2023. Chris joins host Colin Randall, director of research at Fidelity Investments Canada, to discuss all things digital assets. One of the most anticipated and significant events in digital assets relatively short history occurred in the early hours of September 15th. Dubbed the Merge, the event marks the Ethereum blockchain's transition move from a proof-of-work consensus mechanism to a proof-of-stake mechanism. Chris unpacks what this means, including how the Merge represents significant change in Ethereum's technical structure, its economics and environmental footprint, which some say will reduce the blockchain's energy consumption by more than 99%. Today we're thrilled to again feature Matt Twigg, senior manager and lead researcher at Fidelity Labs, based out of Tokyo, Japan. Matt again joins Colin Randall, Fidelity Canada Director of Research, for a discussion on the metaverse, focusing on key considerations for investors. Despite market volatility of late, companies continue to invest heavily in developing these new virtual worlds, including new social, economic, and governance structures within them. That leads to big questions such as who gets a say in how these worlds are created, how they should be governed, and how is the economic value produced and accessed? Matt and Colin look at these questions and more, including what key trends we should be watching for going forward, the concept of centralized vs. decentralized, digital identity, digital twins, and the economic implications of the metaverse. On today's show, we welcome Matt Twigg, senior manager and lead researcher at Fidelity Labs, based out of Tokyo. Matt joins Colin Randall, Fidelity Canada Director of Research, for an engaging discussion on the metaverse. The metaverse has captured headlines in recent months, but research shows that there are widely divergent opinions among investors about what the metaverse is, what it isn't, as well what opportunities and challenges it may bring in the coming years. Investors have questions – social, technological, and even environmental questions. Matt is with us today to answer these questions and demystify the metaverse. Matt shares that in the next 5-10 years, VR gear will become commonplace similar to what phones are for us today. Also, the metaverse is not limited to gaming. It has become an economy and source of income for those affected by the pandemic or unable to physically work. But, technology must improve and costs decrease before a fully immersive Metaverse experience can be a consumer product. Recorded on May 19, 2022. He then talks about his major career pivot into producing music videos in Los Angeles. He explains the specific strategies and leverage points he used to quickly rise in the industry to start landing major studio contracts to produce music videos with 6-figure budgets for A-List musicians like The Back Street Boys, Pitbull, Enrique Iglesias and many others. He then explains how and why he decided to start traveling the world full time and running his business remotely. He shares the tactics for how he continues to run the video production business from different countries around the world, the unexpected benefits of doing so, and how he was able to 4X his income in his first year of being a full time digital nomad. Colin then talks about how he decided to start a second business selling fashionable men's suits, including a charitable component that donates suits to homeless and other disadvantaged men, and shares how he even took the charitable component around the world with him as well.
