The Oakley family's legacy of growing vegetables on the Canterbury plains spans 150 years. Great Great Grandad John Oakley began growing out in Halkett after arriving in New Zealand from the United Kingdom in the 1870s. The love of growing vegetables has been passed down through the generations and today the fifth generation Robin Oakley runs the organisation. They grow potatoes, pumpkin, broccoli and beetroot and their products are in supermarkets nationwide. Oakley's Premium Fresh Vegetables won the Spirit of New Zealand Award at the Outstanding Food Producer Awards earlier this year. The business also includes a sixth generation - Robin's daughter April has been brought on board.

Ben Hartman turned to a lean system when his meticulously built greenhouse was destroyed by high winds. By using this concept, he's instituted a simple way to farm, framing it in terms of production and waste – two sides of the same coin. Learn how Ben Hartman cut his farm down to 1/3 of an acre from an acre without taking a pay cut on this week's pod. Ben Hartman is well known for adapting LEAN principles from manufacturing to his farm in order to cut out waste and maximize efficiency; that is the subject of his previous two books, The Lean Farm and The Lean Farm Guide to Growing Vegetables. However, even after LEANing up his previous two farms, he found he was working too much at the expense of family, friends and community. So he and his wife and farming partner Rachel embarked on a quest to radically LEAN up their farm, and that is the story of his new book, The Lean Micro Farm, and this podcast. Hear how, though skeptical at first, he was able to make as much income and support the family off of 1/3 of an acre instead of the one acre they were previously farming, which in itself is a big reduction from the 400 acres his family was farming when he was growing up. In addition to the ideas underlying efficient micro-farming, this episode is packed with practical information for how to maximize efficiency on a farm of any size, including a simple plan for farm-based fertility, how to find markets for all your produce within a few miles of the farm, quick two-step bed flips, and crops to focus on to maximize income from a small area. I've grown my first full crop on my Tower Garden, aeroponically, and I cannot believe how good a SALAD can be. (And green smoothies of course!) I'll tell you all...

Jeff kicks off the new year with some tips on goal-setting, including how to ensure your vision and values are aligned to goals, and reviewing common goal-setting mistakes. As he takes a pause on producing new episodes for 6-weeks, Jeff revisits his interview with Xavier Naville, Author of “The Lettuce Diaries: How A Frenchman Found Gold Growing Vegetables in China.” Xavier is the Principal at Vision Management Consultants, and was CEO of the Creative Food Group, a key supplier to major restaurant chains in China, like McDonald's, KFC, and Starbucks. Xavier grew the company to one that now has nine factories serving 6,500 restaurants a day and over $150MM in revenue. Jeff and Xavier discuss how his business experiences in China were vastly different than what is typical in most western companies. They talk about which leadership principles are universal, regardless of the country or industry. Xavier shares his personal stories about managing a Chinese team as a foreigner, trying to work with Chinese farmers to improve how they conducted agriculture, all while navigating investor demands. He and Jeff discuss the five ingredients that make up the “Complete Leader.” Xavier shares vulnerably from his leadership journey, which included some nail-biting experiences of being an expatriate in China, almost failing at his business, and his eventual successful exit.
