The battle had commenced for both teams… Maybe it was a sign of fortune, divinity, or whatever you may wish to think, but the team worked together, dealing heavy damage to Malar and Enich. Galahad shows the divine wrath of Bahamut when Malar goes after Zechs and deals an impressive blow. Turk more than shows his abilities in spades, as he uses his form of dread to inflict fear into the god of the Wild Hunt. Afterwhich Zechs deals some up close and personal shots at Malar imbued with a touch of divine energy. Enich needed to heal himself immediately after Shanks' first volley of arrows. Salix uses Juniper's Bloom to cast Gravity Fissure on Enich which he manages to avoid the brunt of but with his back pressing against the wall, it's time to start taking them more seriously. Glad uses her divine magic to cast Bless on the group within Zechs' mind. Malar begins to cast Fire Storm when Turk counterspells the god keeping his new team safe and out of harm's way. Back outside Enich summons shadows that keep the team at bay and they regroup. Malar summons wolves to even the playing field, which are taken care of almost immediately before a sinister laugh comes from him, and he summons even more of them.Enich uses his Dread Lord ability to begin shifting the tides. With that, the group hesitates to approach as per Galahad's earlier warning, and Enich starts shouting about how cowardly they all are. Galahad puts Kana's Fury into Malar's chest, twists it, and says, “Didn't I tell you I was going to wear you?” Malar chuckles before fading, and the group wakes up to see a battle only a few feet away. Enich approaches Salix with his Flame Tongue Longsword and strokes them down. Turk casts Heat Metal on Enich's armor as a tactical move to make any further attacks toward the group at a disadvantage. Enich turns to Turk, points his sword to him, and casts Blight. Even with the combined efforts of the entire group, Enich is giving them a challenging time. Having already donned sturdy armor, the combination of the Shield spell makes it seem impossible to hit him. Greyleaf takes Salix and backs them away from the ensuing fight. Glad heals Salix and picks them back up before casting Magic Missle towards Enich. Arioch's paladin is up, but he's on the defensive. Zechs drops the Hunter's Mark, whom he put on Enich upon entering the fight, and instead summons “Wolfy,” his Beastial Spirit, to assist Galahad as best as it can in this battle of the paladins. As we approach the end of the fight, Shanks can get a shot off with his purple-worm-tipped arrow, dealing a heavy blow to Enich. Salix, now back up, uses Call Lightning to affect Enich is area, but Galahad and Wolfy get caught in the spell. Thankfully, they manage to survive and deal another blow to Enich, who isn't going down without a fight. Greyleaf manages to attack Enich with his Onyx Blade. Enrich casts Destructive Wave as he strikes the ground, and a wave of thunder and necrotic energy hits nearly everyone. Galahad attacks Enich, slashing him across his chest, taking the back end of the sword, and hitting him in the side of the head. Enich exchanges a few words with Galahad before going unconscious. Glad uses Sacred Flame to finish the job, and Enich goes to the afterlife. In 1845, a novel pathogen attacked potato fields across Europe, from Spain to Scandinavia—but only in Ireland were the effects apocalyptic. At least one million Irish people died, and millions more scattered across the globe, emigrating to new countries and continents. Less than fifty years after the union of Ireland with the rest of Great Britain, the newly formed United Kingdom—the most powerful country in the nineteenth-century world—failed millions of its own citizens, leading to decades of poverty, ecological ruin, and collective trauma. How did this happen? Today’s guest Padraic Scanlan recontextualizes the disaster’s origins, events, and consequences in his new book “Rot: An Imperial History of the Irish Famine.” We situate the Irish Great Famine in a larger history of economic consolidation and exploitation caused by British policies toward Ireland. The blight that decimated the potato plants was biological, but the Famine itself was manmade, caused by the British government’s structures of land ownership, labor, and rent collection. The real tragedy of the Famine wasn’t that the British maliciously intended and propagated starvation, but that their efforts to address the “Irish Question” only exacerbated the problem.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

For the past 40 years, the venerated Thrash Metal outfit HEATHEN have abided by their never-say-die attitude.Formed in 1984 in San Francisco's Bay Area—home to EXODUS, METALLICA, TESTAMENT, and DEATH ANGEL HEATHEN quickly separated themselves from the pack by expertly fusing David White's distinctive vocals with a melody-driven and forward-thinking musical style. The band's first two albums, Breaking the Silence and Victims of Deception, are widely regarded as Bay Area Thrash classics. The HEATHEN brand of intelligent yet aggressive Thrash appealed not only to the genre's core demographic, but also Metal fans looking for brains behind the brawn. The most recent full-length album, Empire of the Blind, continued to push the boundaries of the genre, expanding their audience while restoring faith in vicious yet brainy Thrash Metal, the very kind that put HEATHEN on the map.Since the release of their last album, Empire of the Blind, HEATHEN has toured nonstop, playing hundreds of shows across five continents. From the moment that the COVID restrictions lifted in 2022, the band hit the ground running, touring with contemporaries such as TESTAMENT, EXODUS, OVERKILL, and SYMPHONY X over the last three years. Recorded in several cities across the United States during the 2023 Bleed the World Tour, Bleed the World: Live is the perfect audio representation of the HEATHEN live show. Featuring songs from each of the band's albums, including recent tracks such as Sun in My Hand and The Blight as well as classics such as Hypnotized and Goblin's Blade, the live album mirrors the band's crushing live set list. The cover artwork by Travis Smith depicts a steel HEATHEN logo piercing the bleeding Earth, held by a hand that encapsulates the world tour as a moment in time. Produced by guitarist Kragen Lum and mixed by Zeuss, Bleed the World: Live transports the listener into the concert hall with a crystal-clear yet heavy production and captures the interaction between band and audience that makes every HEATHEN live show special.HEAVY caught up with Lum for a chat earlier today, starting with the early response to the album."All the feedback that we've gotten so far has been great," he smiled. "One person mentioned that it was like, if you closed your eyes, you were there at the show. And that was exactly what we were trying to do. We made sure that when we were recording, we recorded not just the band, but also the audience at every show so we could really get the live album feel. Those classic live albums that we used to love - Live After Death and many other ones - you feel like you're there because the audience is so prominent. The feedback from the crowd and everything in the song. And I think modern live albums are missing that because a lot of bands record the show, but they don't record the audience, and you're kind of missing an important element to the live show."In the full interview, Kragem spoke more about what to expect from Bleed The World: Live, the early feedback, if the band approached the concerts any differently knowing they were being recorded for an album, the process of putting together the tracks and selecting them, how critical the band members were of themselves when they listened back through, how they made every effort to replicate the live sound on the album, his early experiences with Heathen before joining, if there was any pressure on him coming into an established band and how long it took him to feel comfortable, their strike record of one album every ten years and if they plan to speed up that process moving forward, the possibilities of coming to Australia and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

How did the memory of the Great Famine shape Irish identity? Could it have been prevented? From 1845 to 1852, a disease decimated potato crops across Ireland. Farmers of small plots who relied entirely on this monoculture were launched into complete destitution. Desperate families were evicted from their homes and suffered through starvation. British public policy offered limited assistance, such as workhouses and public works schemes. But people who were used to hunkering down inside during winter had no warm clothes now suddenly had to work outside in freezing conditions to earn their way. Charles Trevelyan, was put in charge of handling the famine and repeatedly promoted “self-reliance”, describing the catastrophe as a “judgement of God sent to teach the Irish a lesson”. Approximately 1 million people died of disease or starvation, and around 2 million people emigrated, causing huge societal shifts that changed Ireland forever. Listen as Anita and William are joined by writer and historian Colm Tóibín, author of Brooklyn and Long Island, and co-author of The Irish Famine, to discuss the impact of the Great Hunger on Ireland. _____________ Empire UK Live Tour: The podcast is going on a UK tour! Babylon was a great cultural city, much like New York City today. But in Revelation 18, we see her fall.In today's episode, we continue our four-part sermon series from the archives, Loving Your City. In this second message, Paul explains how self-glory consumed Babylon, turning her into a dwelling place for demons. And just like this fallen city, we too are vulnerable to the dangerous addiction of self-glory.To hear more sermons from Paul, visit PaulTripp.com/Sermons.

This week the girls mix inappropriate metaphors with vague certainties, and come up with yet another episode to amuse and inform their eight listeners. Without an ounce of humility, Leslie jumps out of the gate with nonsense about a distillery (possibly illegal) where she condenses her vast garden experience into enviable, crystal-clear drops of purity…and assumes Marianne does likewise. Marianne reminds her that they are both just old — however not too old to enjoy a long, luscious, beautiful, lingering, sensuous, gratifying, fully-satisfying-smoke-a-cigarette spring. Let's hope they both get one soon. Other topics this episode include Nancy Goodwin's garden at Montrose, Blight resistant boxwood, the wonders of The Mid-Atlantic Nursery and Trade Show, and what a bird table or feeder can do for your state of mind. (As in, smoke-a-cigarette-afterwards-joy.) _______________________________________ Full show notes, links, and laughs at: thegardenmixerpodcast.substack.com

The pair met Benjamin Schurr (Ruah, Br'er, Nyxy Nyx), founder of BLIGHT.records, when his band Br'er opened a show for Arto Lindsay at the Black Cat and he soon after agreed to record and produce them. When they'd finished recording their debut album, Peace Will Grind You Down, Ben insisted that the pair begin performing live, agreed to fill in temporarily, then became a permanent member along with baritone sax player Madeline Billhimer. The four-piece line-up recorded Peace Lives, a live recording of songs mostly from their first album. Billhimer left the band during the recording of their next full-length album, Ballast. Schurr, who was born in Philadelphia, moved back to his home city in 2019 with Flack following shortly after. Christmas Eve of 2019, Pond's aunt shared she had months to live and asked her to write her some music to help accept her transition, asking that it could be released after her death. Still living in DC, Pond recruited Ben to come down to her house in Anacostia and record an intense week of highly improvised sessions. The two worked around the clock on what would become the fourth album Luna Honey, Branches. After the pandemic hit in 2020, Pond moved back to her hometown of Richmond, VA to be closer to her parents and Schurr followed. All three band members commuted back and forth between Richmond and Philadelphia continuing to write songs. Parables was written during the period of geographic separation across DC, Philadelphia, and Richmond. Three months after moving to Richmond, Pond's mother passed after an over a decade long fight with cancer. In the wake of her mother's passing, Pond had found comfort in the solo work of longtime Swans guitarist Norman Westberg and ended up striking up a long-distance collaboration. Aftermath resulted, a meditation on grief and what is left behind. In 2022, Pond and Schurr moved to Philadelphia, finally reuniting the band within the same city. Re-energized after living through the difficulties during COVID and the past several years, the three began recording a new crop of songs that would make up the majority of Bound, with the goal of capturing the raw, powerful energy of their live shows. Luna Honey's art emerges from the creative tension between the death of the ego and the exploration of the subconscious with the pragmatism and discipline of punching the clock and getting the work done. http://www.lunahoney.com http://facebook.com/lunahoneymusic http://www.instagram.com/lunahoneymusic linktr.ee/lunahoneymusic https://open.spotify.com/artist/3kz45E0sd0kFgZIfQNwm2F https://lunahoney.bandcamp.com/album/bound

We really don't give fungi the credit they deserve. Over the years of this podcast, we've covered only a handful of fungal pathogens, and pathogenic fungi themselves represent a teeny tiny proportion of the incredible diversity of fungal life on this planet. But with this book club episode, we're attempting to correct this oversight, at least a little bit. Toxicologist and science writer Dr. Emily Monosson joins us to discuss her book Blight: Fungi and the Coming Pandemic. We chat about how fungal epidemics have shaped entire ecosystems, altered economies, and invaded hospitals. Despite the devastating impact pathogenic fungi have made, we still underappreciate their potential to cause harm in the future, as our climate changes, as our land use changes, and as globalization continues. In Blight, Monosson delivers an important reminder that we should use what we have learned about these historical outbreaks to limit the harm fungi may cause in the future. Tune in today to gain a new appreciation for this incredible group of organisms.
