French politics has had quite a summer. In early June, the French far-right made substantial gains in the European Union Parliament. The same day the results came down, French President Emmanuel Macron called snap elections, saying that the rise of nationalists and demagogues was a danger to France and Europe. It was a shocking and risky move. In the first round of elections, the far-right came in first, but after the second round, they were in third. Much of the media moved on after reporting on this story as a triumph over anti-democratic forces. But that narrative misses some important realities about French politics and what it will mean for France, for Europe, for NATO, and for France's standing on the world stage. Executive Editor Natalie Orpett sat down with Tara Varma, a Visiting Fellow at the Brookings Institution and a close observer of French politics, to talk through it all.To receive ad-free podcasts, become a Lawfare Material Supporter at www.patreon.com/lawfare. Over the course of 2024, roughly half of the world's population will participate in national elections. On this episode, we take a closer look at two of them: this summer's elections in the United Kingdom and France. In the U.K., the center-left Labour Party won in a landslide in July, ending 14 years of Conservative Party rule. In France, an alliance of left-leaning parties banded together to defeat the right-wing National Rally Party, led by Marine Le Pen. But as political economist and Watson Professor Mark Blyth explains, neither was as resounding a victory for the center-left as the topline results suggest. Furthermore, if these new governments fail to address the social and economic distress so many people in their countries are experiencing, the far-right may not be sidelined for long. Mark Blyth is the director of the Rhodes Center for International Economics and Finance at the Watson Institute. He's also host of the Rhodes Center Podcast, another podcast from the Watson Institute. On this episode, he spoke with Dan Richards about what these two elections can tell us about the political fault lines running through European politics today and what they can also tell us about right-wing populism in the U.S. ahead of our own election in November. You're telling us to be civil and tone down the rhetoric? Well, excuse us, but we're not the ones who attempted to violently overthrow our democracy! Ignoring a crisis won't solve it. Yet that's exactly what the mainstream media is doing by “both-sidesing” America's political violence crisis driven by the far-right. Much of the mainstream media continues to fall in line, pumping out propaganda to normalize Trump. They claim he'll change this time. But you already know that he won't, because you listen to our show! Meanwhile, these same media outlets continue to fawn over the MAGA fascist rally known as the Republican National Convention, featuring a who's who of Kremlin disinformation agents like Trump's VP pick JD Vance. It's like watching a very dark comedy where the punchline is always at the expense of democracy. Now, for those who crave staying grounded and self-care with facts, this week's bonus show will analyze the GOP's Kremlin Convention and prepare us for the week ahead! After the first round of European Parliament elections, the French far-right (represented by the National Rally) had a great showing. Tommy and Ben discuss the surprising French election results and debate whether Macron's decision to call early elections was a success or failure, the Labour landslide in the UK, and how American politics loom large at this year's NATO summit in Washington, DC. They also talk about the election of reformist Masoud Pezeshkian in Iran and how a new president could change relations with the West, the latest on negotiations to end the war in Gaza, what to expect from Bibi Netanyahu's address to Congress, and why you should wear a poncho if you're planning on visiting Barcelona. Then, Ben speaks to Coco Khan and Nish Kumar of Pod Save the UK about last week's elections.

The French elections. Over the weekend, a leftist coalition called the New Popular Front (NFP) won a plurality of seats in the 2024 French legislative election in a surprise upset over a right-wing movement that was expected to dominate the election. However, the New Popular Front failed to win a majority, leaving open the possibility of a hung parliament, which would be an unprecedented outcome in French history. You can read today's podcast here, our “Under the Radar” story here and today's “Have a nice day” story here. You can catch our trailer for the Tangle Live event at City Winery NYC. More Congressional Democrats have called for President Joe Biden to step down, but he is receiving unwavering support from others in his administration. France's far right party fell short in legislative elections yesterday, Boeing has agreed to plead guilty to fraud charges stemming from the crashes of two 737 Max jets, and Hurricane Beryl makes landfall in Texas.Want more comprehensive analysis of the most important news of the day, plus a little fun? It was produced by Ziad Buchh, Ben Abrams and Kaity Kline. We get engineering support from Carleigh Strange. And our technical director is Stacey Abbott. An earlier version of this episode mistakenly identified the four members who called for President Joe Biden to step aside as House committee chairs. They are House committee ranking members. The earlier version also mistakenly identified Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) as House speaker. He is House minority leader. In addition, the earlier version indicated that the French far-right was routed by a coalition of parties from the center and the left. It was a coalition of leftist parties on the one hand and the French president's centrist allies on the other.Learn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy
