A few episodes ago, you heard me talk about location independence for beginners. My guest Jeremy and I discussed how starting a service-based business was one of the best ways to get started.Jeremy mentioned that he grew his business through referral partners. In this episode, I’m diving deeper into that topic with my guest Zoe Linda Pollard. Zoe is an English expat living in Sweden and she specializes in teaching others how to grow their online businesses through referral partnerships. She’s actually hosting a free event called the Magical Meetup on April 7th and you can find out more about that by going to sarahmikutel.com/zoe. If you hear this podcast after that, I’ll link to another useful resource of Zoe’s. The Magical Meetup is a one-hour event created to help you connect with other service-based business owners around the world who can help you spread the word about your business. It's also a great place to find guests for your podcast, and to find people for whom you'd want to be a referral partner. If you’re still wondering what this referral partner business is all about, stay tuned. Location-Independent Businesses are currently a hot trend in the business world. But what are they exactly? Who are the people operating them? And most importantly, could a Location Independent Business be a fit for you? Fredrik and Charlie take a look at this growing phenomenon, and give you a complete guide to working out if you could benefit from being location-independent. KEY TAKEAWAYS A Location-Independent Business is a business that can operate from anywhere in the world at any time. With the advent of the digital/online world, permanent connection allows business owners to free themselves from the limitations of location. Get rid of stuff - Don’t let your possessions be a barrier to your operating independently of location. Free yourself from everything extraneous. Develop relevant skills - Some skills are better suited to employment, while others will allow you take advantage of being location-free. Set up a location-independent business of your own - If your skills allow you to be free of locale, then you could use this option. But ensure that you are paying tax in the correct country. Make sure your permanent belongings are designed for being location-free. Things such as mobile contracts and subscriptions need to work anywhere in the world. Nomad Community projects present a huge opportunity for professionals who wish to tie travel into work, and operate around the globe. Lower your costs - Mainly applies to your home country. It is about making sure the costs during your absence are as reduced as possible. You can sub-let any properties you own in your home country in order to provide yourself with an income while you’re away. FIRE (Financially Independent - Retire Early) is a movement that’s been around for some time. It involves living from accumulated wealth, and being allowed total freedom of movement. Assets such as real-estate and investments keep earning for you no matter where in the world you are. Building a portfolio with this in mind for the future is a very wise plan for those who aspire to travel later. Be frugal or splash out? Do you really need those luxuries? Could you do just as well by saving your money this time? Added pleasures are always welcome, but be wise in how you spend your money. Communications will become more and more essential the more location-free you become. Remember to stay as connected as possible. Your income will depend upon it. Prepare your family, and to some extent, involve them in your travel plans. But remember that in the end, it’s your life, and the decisions you make are your own. Live your life your way. Timing is everything - Don’t assume that just because you want to be location-independent, that you can do it any time. You many have commitments that keep you from this lifestyle, so consider carefully. BEST MOMENTS ‘Customise your belongings so that they’re slightly more mobile’ ‘It was the best sushi I’ve ever had!’ ‘You can live like a king, depending on where you choose to go’ ’Systems free up time for you’ ‘You can have candles - That was very specific!’ ‘It’s your life and your choice' VALUABLE RESOURCES Invest In You Podcast Nomad Communities - https://remoteyear.com/ ABOUT THE HOST Serialentrepreneur Fredrik Sandvall loves sharing ideas and interviewing world-class entrepreneurs and influencers. Matt Bowles dissects the Maverick Investor Group business model and shares 5 tips for building a location independent business in a space that is not traditionally virtual. He begins by explaining the importance of believing it can be done, ignoring the naysayers and perceived limitations, and surrounding yourself with or at least consuming content by people that have done similar things. Matt shares multiple examples of entrepreneurs interviewed on The Maverick Show that have built business with a location-independent infrastructure that many people initially thought was impossible to do. He then talks about the importance of reverse engineering your business model to ensure you don't make any geographically restrictive mistakes. Next, he talks about the importance of mitigating any additional perceived risk in the mind of the buyer, and then to go beyond that and to actually make your location independent infrastructure part of your value proposition and explain how it is advantageous to your buyer. Matt provides examples of how Maverick Investor Group does this with their buying opportunities for cash-flowing rental properties that people can buy in the most investor advantaged markets regardless of where they live. And finally, he talks about integrating your location independent lifestyle into your brand identity, using it to be more interesting than your competitors and also to establish affinities with other people that live or aspire to that lifestyle. Alison Armstrong ~ Understanding Men ~ Current Series ~ 100 Interviews with 100 Major Influencers Hello listeners, welcome to the show today. I want to welcome you back to the podcast and introduce another very special guest. Alison Armstrong is our guest today, I actually heard her first speak over six years ago and I was blown away by the content about men and women, and then I started just engulfing myself into her material. I can be a testament that what she teaches changes people's lives because it has been one of the most impactful subjects that I have studied throughout my life and my personal growth process. Alison and what she teaches has absolutely revolutionized the way that I see the world. Alison's exploration into understanding the differences between men and women started way back in 1991. She just was curious about why men operated the way that we do, and she wanted to understand the differences between the sexes. She's been studying men for nearly 30 years now, and she has this type of understanding about the sexes, that when men see her speak they actually start to cry, and they do that because they feel more understood than they ever had in their entire lives. What she does is she distinguishes human instincts that compel both men and women to behave in ways that contradict and undermine our own purposes goals and values and needs and relationships. I think there's a few key important things that we don't study in school that are incredibly important. One of those is of course money. The other one is effective communication, and the other one is understanding relationships. These are three things that are essential for people to live a healthy well balanced life. So, I recommend anybody to check out. I've made it actually one of my goals to make Allison and her material one of my major studies for the next year. I usually have a few major goals in a year and Allison is in her materials, one of the most important things my priorities for 2020. Throughout the interview, we talk about how she built this passion into an amazing location independent business, starting way back in the 90s. We talk about essential differences between the sexes, why men are operate the way that we do and argument resolution for couples. I don't think there's anybody that could listen to this show and not get an incredible amount of value out of it this podcast interview! 06:01: Starting a Location Independent Business on Accident in 1995 07:40: Who is Alison Armstrong and Why is She On Our Podcast? 14:55: Tips on How the Sexes Can Listen To Each Other Better 29:49: The Five Layers of Protection Men Have About Criticism 41:15: Argument Resolution for Couples 52:10: Turning Alison's Mission of Understanding Men Into a Business Contact Info: https://www.understandmen.com/

Matt Bowles is a location-independent entrepreneur who started his own online business after stumbling across The Four Hour Work Week in a Barnes and Noble bookstore back in 2007 - the day he got laid off from his 9-5 job. He now helps people create passive income streams through location-independent real estate investment properties and runs a podcast interviewing other digital nomad entrepreneurs. He has been featured in major national media and was named one of the “Top 50 Real Estate Opinion Makers and Market Leaders”. Matt and his co-founders at Maverick Investor group have helped individual real estate investors buy over $100 million in residential investment property across 15 States. As a location-independent business owner, Matt runs his company (and hosts the podcast!) from epic locations around the world and has lived in over 50 different countries since 2013. He is a sought after speaker at events and conferences around the world relating to real estate investing, entrepreneurship, long-term world travel and the digital nomad lifestyle. Matt and Kristin met on Nomad Cruise 6, where they were both speakers. Before Maverick: Matt was a hip hop DJ in the 90s and his first entrepreneurial venture was starting his own mobile D.J. company during high school. He studied Sociology in College, then did a Masters Degree in International Peace and Conflict Resolution and spent time in Palestine, the north of Ireland, and other conflict regions doing peace and justice advocacy work. After that he worked in the nonprofit sector in Washington, DC, focusing on human rights and civil liberties issues in the U.S. At age 30, he was unexpectedly laid off from his job and on that day he decided to pivot completely and build a location-independent business that donates 10% of the net profits to causes that affect positive change in the world. He co-founded that company, Maverick Investor Group, with some amazing business partners, started traveling the world, and the rest is history. Slow Travel. Location Independent Business. Living Life on Your Terms - even if those terms mean selling everything you own (or giving it away) and going on the road for 18 months with only what can fit in your Honda CRV. These are all things I was curious about when I learned about Kala Philo. She is a heroine in her own right that had the courage to go out on her own, envision a life outside of what we would consider the “norm” (What’s normal, anyway??) and create this beautiful life of slow travel, a location independent business, a minimalist lifestyle - only to find complete satisfaction and the love her life along her sweet journey. Come learn all about Kala in this podcast interview and see if this type of lifestyle might be your next grand adventure!

After getting fired from numerous jobs, dropping out of my PhD program, recovering from failed marriage, I realized I had been living someone else's dream. I set out to construct a career and lifestyle that would let me be the explorer and teacher that I was always meant to be. I asked “What does it look like to be the hero of your own life?” So in 2014, I started “The Art of Adventure Podcast”, and it has become one of the top podcasts in the world for Location Independent Business, Adventure Travel, and cutting edge topics. So when he was in his dark times, looking for a new way of making a living that was fun and inspiring did he imagine that he would end up here? And its ok to have the vision but when did the mindset shift to one of fun and money? Well let's find out as we bring onto the show to start joining up dots with the one and only Derek Loudermilk Show Highlights During the entrepreneur podcast show we had deep hitting conversations with Derek Loudermilk around subjects such as: Derek shares those moments when his life becomes so playful that his work increased in quality exponentially. Its true to say that on a podcast like the top rated business podcast Join Up Doys, I have so many guests who have interesting back stories, but not many that start with “Before I was seven years old I had lived in a house truck, on a commune, in France, in New Zealand, in Ireland, and several homes in England. I had been bathed in a sink, had a pet goose called Lucy, and I think it would be fair to say that my parents gifted me with a curiosity for the world.” So upon hearing this I knew that I had to invite this lady onto the show, but wow what part of her career history do I tell you about in the introduction because without a doubt as she says “Life has been a bit of rollercoaster!” Starting her career after gaining a BA in Theatre Practice and Scenic Art from the Central School of Speech and Drama, she went on to have a successful and (eventually) well paid career as a Freelance TV & Film Production Buyer, Stylist, and Project / Event Manager. She worked hard and played harder. She had motivation by the bucket load. However her energies could only last so long and she would suffer from burn out at the end of every job. She had money, and so she would take herself off to Thailand and engulf herself in fasting and raw food, or go off to Egypt for a yoga retreat. Recharge the batteries to blaze even brighter in the entrepreneurial world. And this was certainly the case, as upon returning she started one of the forerunners in the VA sphere and early adapters to Location Independent Business. As she says “It was a wonderfully brave and stupid thing to do. I was homeless and sofa surfing, massively in debt and knew nothing about running a business. Which meant I had nothing to lose and gave it everything I had. Bootstrapping a business when you are desperate and resourceful can be a wonderful thing, and I was given opportunities to learn from many wildly inspirational Entrepreneurs, Businesses, and Private Clients.” But of course this was just the beginning of everything that would lead her through some seriously dark moments, even contemplating suicide. Her life was a roller coaster of working till she collapsed and then ‘retreating' around the world. And so the time came when she had her first pangs of “Is this it?!” She wasn't satisfied, there was a huge void in her life, she felt empty and in the midst of the impending recession she set up My Girl Friday Ltd, providing Freelance Personal and Virtual Assistance to Creative Businesses & Private Individuals in the UK and across the globe. And that is where we will start today's episode as now life is very different, but how has she made it the life that she wanted? How did she take the entrepreneurial venture, and willingness to put the effort into a new business, but structure it that it didn't bring her to her knees too? Well let's find out as we bring onto the show to start joining up dots, with the one and only misfit entrepreneur herself Ebonie Allard.

“Validation is not something that really works for small unfunded businesses.” Dan Norris Imagine spending seven years as a failed entrepreneur. Imagine, the strains of selling your product and more money goes out of the bank account each month than comes in. Imagine trying to pay rent, maintaining personal relationships and having a family. Every time you think about going back to get a job, you feel sick to your stomach. It is a challenging path, and one that many entrepreneurs experience on one level or another. Today's guest is Dan Norris, the founder of WP Curve and The 7-Day Startup movement. Dan went through this exact process as a failed entrepreneur. Then one day, he had an idea for a business that his fellow entrepreneurs thought wasn't a good idea. He decided to launch the business anyway. Within 23 days Dan was profitable. Within 2 years he hit $1,000,000 in revenue and within 3 years he sold that business to GoDaddy. Dan is now the author of four books and has now opened his own brewery in Australia. On a show like the Steve Jobs inspired Join Up Dots business podcast interview, its true to say that I have so many guest entrepreneurs who have interesting back stories, but not many that start with “Before I was seven years old I had lived in a house truck, on a commune, in France, in New Zealand, in Ireland, and several homes in England. Well let's find out as we bring onto the show to start in the words of Steve Jobs, joining up dots, with the one and only misfit entrepreneur herself Ebonie Allard.

One of the benefits of living an expat lifestyle is that you can save a fortune living in some wonderful countries that offer a high quality of life for cents on the dollar compared to the western world. But who says you have to sacrifice income and live on the smell of an oily rag? Today’s guest has combined the best of lifestyle with building an online business that last month provided him with over $22000 in largely passive income. Johnny FD (the FD stands for fighting and diving - his two Thai passions) left Los Angeles and a corporate job with Honeywell to enjoy an overseas holiday in Thailand. Loving the experience he returned to his cubicle intent on relocating – after all he knew he could live on $600 per month while there. Depending on savings for the first twelve months he took a dive course to be an instructor but knew he needed an alternative if he didn’t want to turn his passion into a chore. He investigated online income options and created an e-book that generated sales but a coffee meeting with an entrepreneur who made money from drop shipping convinced Johnny that there were more opportunities on the internet than he had investigated. Three years on and he now has several successful online stores but is earning just over half of his money from affiliate marketing. He hasn’t lost his passion for work but now focuses on building his income rather than trading time for money – his income occurs whether he works or not In this interview Johnny shares the story of how he got started and some tips on how to determine an online income that works for you. You can follow his exact recipe via his blog http://www.johnnyfd.com What I learned from talking with Johnny: Living an expat lifestyle doesn’t mean doing without. Johnny still lives comfortably on considerably less than he’d spend back in the US but his strong income gives him peace of mind and the chance to build investment savings while he relaxes on the beach. Online income can be erratic – you can’t guarantee it’s consistency but it pays to have more than one string to your bow. Johnny had initially built his income from drop shipping (the process of selling online where the manufacturer sends the goods direct to the buyer and you don’t have to handle it) but now gets just over half his income from affiliate marketing (promoting other people’s products) Johnny does much of his own work because he enjoys it with limited use of outsourcers. His income however is largely not connected to the time he puts in – most of the time he does spend is on growing his business and adding other forms of income. Get help from others. When he was learning he would regularly take entrepreneurs out for coffee and pick their brains and he doesn’t stop learning now just because he has achieved success.

I'm just about to leave my job for the second time so this is a solo episode in which I'm going to share with you a few chapters from my own story. First I want to tell you about my last business, which was a Landscape Architecture Practice I attempted to set up in Penang Malaysia. I don't have the time to explain all the details but you'll get a good idea of how it started and how it failed. I talk about all the poor decisions I made while I was there and how I ended up losing $30,000 in my first year. After that terrible fall, I knew I had to get back on my feet again and that it wouldn't be easy. Although I have taken a job for a while I think deep down I've always known that building my own business was the only way I would ever really be able to dig myself out the hole I was in. That took a lot of hard work so I’m also going to share with you exactly what my training regime was that helped me recover and reinvent myself. In this episode I also share what I’ve done to apply all the new knowledge and skills I now have from that recovery period in order to replace my current day job and my income with a new business framework. This new framework is presenting new opportunities for business and additional streams of income every single day. Most importantly my new business allows me to work from anywhere, which has been a career dream of mine for over a decade.
