1979 was an important year for rock and roll, but it was a bigger year for my musical journey. This was the year that the real obsession with buying records began. I had a job. I had a car. And I had put together a pretty awesome sound system in my bedroom. This was the first year I was buying new music AS it was coming out. I was no longer saving up for a record I read about in Creem Magazine. I was at the record store each and every week. In fact, this was the year I first started working at a record store, and you know I spent more money on music than I actually made at the store. So tonight’s celebration of the UK sounds of that year is truly a trip back in time. With a handful of exceptions, this was indeed a good portion of my playlist back then. London Calling. A Different Kind of Tension. Setting Sons. Cool For Cats. Labour of Lust. The list goes on and on of music I forced friends to endure whether they liked them or not. And now for something completely different… friend of the podcast Dan Rivkin waxes philosophically (and with great humor) on the myriad touchpoints that are reflected by Glenn and his hair. While not altogether serious, it's a fascinating visual: whether as a teenager, in his 20s with Squeeze, as a solo artist roaming the world and into the 21st century, his altogether unique style and deportment when it concerns personal presentation - and this includes his fellow bandmates! - is one subject that Dan and myself felt needed at least, a podcast-length deep-dive discussion.Squeeze "Cool For Cats", Live at The Depot, Salt Lake City, 10/7/2016[At the 1:55 mark]
For once, it's not the usual football chat or silliness here unfortunately.Matt spoke to Sunderland singer-songwriter Faye Fantarrow, who was recently diagnosed with a rare and aggressive brain tumour at the age of only 20.Faye is fundraising for curative treatment in the USA and needs to raise £450,000 to make this happen. Here, Faye and her sister Abigail talk about the diagnosis, and how the city has rallied around Faye's cause over the last week.To donate to Fight for FayeBuy tickets for Cool For Cats on December 23Fight for Faye on TwitterFaye on InstagramTo listen to Faye's music Hosted on Acast. *Audio quality for this episode is slightly diminished due to technical difficulties* The iconic Squeeze album ‘Singles - 45s and Under' - gets the Cool For Cats treatment, as I welcome Dr. Kit O'Toole for a hearty discussion on this fan fave. While this release came out in 1982 and covered only a 4-year span, for anyone who wants to get their feet wet in the discovery of the band's ‘greatest hits,' this album is for you. Kit and I jump into how and when she discovered this release, make our case with a track-by-track analysis, delve into the often overused comparison to Lennon-McCartney and find that while these songs represent only a fractional timespan in Squeeze history, it's a conversation that is timely and timeless for anyone who considers themselves a dedicated follower of Squeeze. Kit is a co-host for ‘Talk More Talk: A Solo Beatles Videocast' on Facebook and at talkmoretalk.com and her most recent book is co-authored with Ken Womack ‘Fandom and The Beatles: The Act You've Known For All These Years.' --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

In this mini-episode, I go a little more in-depth from the trailer on how we start and where we're headed with the podcast - for all things Squeeze!
Chris Difford is a rare breed. As a member of one of London's best-loved bands, the Squeeze co-founder has made a lasting contribution to English music with hits such as ‘Cool For Cats', ‘Up The Junction', ‘Labelled With Love', ‘Hourglass' and ‘Tempted'. Despite the fact that Chris has helped soundtrack so many fans' lives since his first release in 1977, the passion for innovation and love of playing still drives him to carry on writing rather than sit back and admire his handywork. Chris recently celebrated his 60th birthday and for 41 of those years he has been writing with Glenn Tilbrook, very much the Odd Couple. When Squeeze take a break from the road, Glenn and Chris have been touring their ‘At Odds Couple Tour'. An absolute joy and privilege to interview legendary singer/songwriter Chris Difford from Squeeze. A really interesting discussion on matters of music and faith and much more. I do hope you enjoy this conversation with Chris.
He is a Grammy nominated and double Ivor Novello Award winning lyricist who has for over 40 years successfully turned the every day mundane into the beautiful through the power of song. Co-founder of chart topping British band Squeeze, he has co-written some of the most enduring and best-loved songs of our time such as ‘Up The Junction', ‘Cool For Cats', ‘Labelled With Love', ‘Tempted' and many others. As one of the most accomplished & respected songwriters he has been hosting writing retreats for over 25 years mostly from Somerset along with the wonderful Buddy Holly Foundation at Pennard House. He released his autobiography ‘Some Fantastic Place' in 2017 recognising his journey into recovery and selling out a two week run of his solo show at Edinburgh Festival. So while Squeeze along with their ardent fans await tours to kick off again, including a much anticipated rescheduled tour with Hall & Oates, his creativity continues via online workshops, concerts from home and podcasts.

On this edition of Album Infinitum, Cool for Cats. The album that spawned the classic singles "Goodbye Girl," "Up the Junction," "Cool for Cats," and "Slap and Tickle," Cool for Cats is largely considered by Difford and Tilbrook to be the first proper Squeeze album, it cemented the band's placement as one of the best pop bands of all time, and put them at the crest of the crashing New Wave. In the co-host seat for this episode is the wonderful Mr. Jason Woodbury. Jason is a member of the Zia Records home office team, a music writer, a musician, part of Aquarium Drunkard (be sure to check out the AD podcast Transmissions!), and just an all around great guy--especially to talk music with. Find him on Twitter at @jasonpwoodbury and @aquadrunkard. As always, I want to stress the importance of supporting the artists that are featured on this series, whether that’s through buying their music and merch, attending one of their concerts, or even simply following them on social media. Squeeze is indeed very active, recording and touring both as a band, and Glenn Tilbrook and Chris Difford with their respective solo endeavors--see them in whatever capacity you're able. Additionally, keep up to date on all their latest doings at http://www.squeezeofficial.com/ and through their social media (@squeezeogram on, appropriately, Instagram and @squeezeofficial on Twitter). Squeeze were one of the most beloved bands of the modern rock era and sitting at the center of the band was drummer Gilson Lavis. Always looking like a man out of time, looking smart and gentlemanly in the alternative UK underground, Gilson contributed to some of the best and most revered pop songs of the last 40 years like "Tempted", "Cool For Cats", and "Pulling Mussels From a Shell". He's been out of the band for 25 years now, but today he's employed by former bandmate Jools Holland in his Rhythm and Blues Orchestra, so the music carries on. He's also begun a successful second life as a sketch artist and has a big show coming up at a gallery in NYC in September. If you're a Squeeze fanatic, you'll love this because we cover it all! https://www.facebook.com/gilsonlavisart/
