In this Squiz Shortcut, we'll look at why Australia is shutting down its 3G phone network in the coming months. That's something that's set to be a problem for the estimated half a million people who are still using phones and other devices that rely on 3G, particularly in regional areas. It's an issue that's been put on hold, but as we get closer to the deadline the phone is ringing. So in this Squiz Shortcut, we talk about why 3G is being retired, how that's going to happen, and how it will affect Aussie phone customers. Squiz recommends: Reading: The 3G closure fact sheet on the Australian Mobile Telecommunications Association's website. It has all the information people need about why the 3G shutdown is happening and instructions about how to check if their phones/devices will be affected. Recycling: If you do take the opportunity to get a new phone, the government is directing people to recycle their old 3G ones through MobileMuster, the Australian mobile industry's official recycling scheme, which has drop-off points in every suburb and also in regional areas. Help: Check whether your phone will be affected by the 3G shutdown using a handy text service launched by both Telstra and Optus - just text "3" to the number 3498. This will send a reply back straight away telling you whether your phone is compatible with 4G and whether you need to take any action. Want the email version? In this Squiz Shortcut, we'll look at why college students are protesting about the Gaza war at campuses across the United States. They've made headlines over the past month because some of the demonstrations have turned violent, sparking debates over free speech and even forcing the White House to weigh in. They've also spread to Aussie universities, where students have set up camps, and tensions are running high. So we'll look at what they're trying to achieve and their likely impact - if any. Squiz recommends: Reading: This explainer from The Guardian discusses what's been happening at university campuses in Australia. Listening: This episode of The Daily podcast from The New York Times gives a good account of the US protests, particularly on the night of the UCLA arrests, and what impact the activism could have on Joe Biden's bid to retain the Presidency. In this Shortcut, we're talking about nuclear power—which has been back in the news lately, with the Coalition announcing it wants it to be part of Australia's energy mix. It's far from a new idea, and while many countries have embraced it to generate their power cleanly and cheaply, Australia is still debating it. So we'll look at what nuclear power is, how it could work in Australia, and whether it could be a realistic solution for our energy needs. Squiz recommends: Reading: This article from The Conversation and the ABC provides some historical context for the Coalition's nuclear policy and explains why it's unusual for Dutton. Listening: The Could Australia Go Nuclear? episode from The Guardian's Full Story podcast, which gives a good idea of the numbers and the time needed to go nuclear.
