Welcome to Season 4 of Stories from the River! Host and CEO of Broad River, Charlie Malouf, kicks off season four by introducing Broad River Retail's Word of the Year for 2025—"Pioneer." Guests Heather Greenwood and Will Luke discuss their roles in the new, creative process of selecting the Company's Word of the Year. Historically, the Word of the Year has been selected by the executive team, but this year, a collaborative and innovative approach was introduced during a Leadership offsite meeting in early November. The Leadership Team was separated into three teams of six people, and each team had to use guidelines and a framework to present their suggested Word of the Year for the Company for 2025. Each team was charged with the responsibility of nominating and presenting a word, aiming to find one that adhered to the framework and encapsulated the zeitgest (the spirit of the times) for the country, the industry, the Company, and its Memory Makers. Heather and Will describe their journey and thought process in choosing "Pioneer" as their final submission. They originally considered "Forge" but later pivoted after realizing one of its negative connotations. The word "Pioneer" was chosen for its multi-dimensional nature, symbolizing courage, innovation, and leadership. Although unexpected, the word resonated deeply with Charlie and the executive team, as it aligned with their vision of empowering Memory Makers to be intrapreneurs and drive forward-thinking growth initiatives. The episode concludes with a discussion on how the word Pioneer will guide organizational programs and individual actions throughout the year, aiming to inspire Memory Makers to embrace change and propel Broad River Retail into exciting frontiers. My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Kay Smith-Blum, author of the book Tangles. After selling her European fashion specialty store in 2016, Kay Smith-Blum began writing the novel she had been percolating on for two decades. Three manuscripts later, Smith-Blum's debut novel, Tangles, depicts the human costs of the nuclear age and the dangerous legacy it leaves for future generations. “The Calf” is a companion piece, and the first in a series of short works and essays that accompanied the release in November 2024. Winner of the 2023 Black Fox Lit short story contest, Smith-Blum has been published in multiple literary journals. In my book review, I stated Tangles is an amazing debut novel that pushes the genre boundaries. Is it historical fiction? A love story? A thriller/mystery/suspense? The answer is yes - and a whole lot more. We meet Luke and learn that he is sure the nuclear power plant in his community poisoned the citizens, including his father. He also believes that those in charge, from plant officials to government leaders, knew of the safety issues and kept them a secret. Because of this, Luke sets off to prove these theories once and for all, making enemies along the way. Luke is a likeable character, and Kay helps us get inside his head. Whether we see him as a young teen when he falls in love with his married neighbor or as an adult dealing with his own cancer diagnosis and befriending a fatherless child, it is easy to understand his motivations and cheer him on. Will Luke be able to find the answers he seeks? Will he ever know what happened to his first love? Read the book and find out! In this episode of World Business Forum NYC 2023 Series from Stories from the River, host Charlie Malouf welcomes Will Luke, Director of Retail Operations and Stacey McCormick, the River's Senior VP of Retail Performance, as they break down their thoughts on Simon Sinek's unique Q&A in New York City. In their conversation, they delve into Simon's ideas on the correlation between rewarding behaviors and initiatives as opposed to rewarding outputs. They examine the idea of a company hackathon to solve big problems within the company with collaboration. Additionally, they discuss how scheduled office meetings can impede spontaneous creativity, and explore the current work-from-home (WFH) culture and why a return to office (RTO) can lead to a necessary and healthy dose of human and social connection. Simon suggests that the WFH culture is causing our epidemic of loneliness and isolation. They discuss Sinek's book "The Infinite Game" and the long-term, healthy benefits of playing an infinite game in business as opposed to the short-term and limited mindset that leads to a decline of trust, culture, and morale that comes from playing a finite game. They discuss various viewpoints presented by Sinek and whether or not they fully concur with his ideas. Additionally, they delve into some of his concepts, such as when it is appropriate to terminate someone. The conversation also covers the responsible implementation of AI technology, taking into account both its exciting possibilities and underlying concerns. In staying true to his optimistic outlook, Simon concludes his time on the stage by stating that his theme for the new year is idealism as he suggested that the possibility for world peace literaly existed within the room that day. With the big game coming up this weekend, we feel it necessary to place a friendly wager. Will Luke's Cyclones or Jeriney's Hawkeyes be victorious?
In Star Wars The Last Jedi we know Kylo Ren has a crack kyber crystal in his lightsaber (as we saw in Star Wars The Force Awakens). Why is this? This episode has many different theories I've thought and pondered over as to just how this lightsaber crystal is cracked...what's missing...? Luke Skywalker in The Last Jedi has a shard of a lightsaber crystal around his neck as a necklace, and this has been rumoured to be Darth Vader's RED lightsaber crystal. Will Luke use this crystal? Will Luke have a red lightsaber? Will he fight Snoke? Will Anakin Skywalker ever take the high ground? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Will Luke every realize that his Dad Jokes are not funny? The world may never know...
The boys chat with comedian and show runner Shawn Braley about the anxiety of running a show and how he tries to guide the energy of the room by not letting his own get in the way. Shawn talks about working at CAC and we hear all about his favorite exhibit. These days he's booking comedy and entertainment for the newly opened Common Wealth Sanctuary in Dayton Kentucky. Stay tuned till the end because we have full blown segments now! Will Loren's Segment beat out Luke's from last week? Will Luke's segment hold strong for one more Friday? Humans cannot sleep without hurting themselves. You're welcome for that little factoid. We hosted a Red Dead Redemption Multiplayer Achievement Hunting Session! Can you believe it? We actually did something with the community. And we had a few people join up for some gun-slinging, hay chewing, donkey wrangling fun! What a mission it turns out to be - spawn and die. So lets rather ride out into the sunset and shoot some NPC's. And blow-up Lee... Which caused Lee to get absolutely absorbed into Red Dead for the entire weekend! While he was playing the first game, Simone was getting stuck into Red Dead 2. And apparently horses can die. And don't come back. We're wondering whether the controls are bad on purpose so you end up being naughty by accident. And while the two are stuck in the Wild West, Kyle is still in a galaxy far away, mispronouncing names, and ranting about how convenient everything is. Oh, she used to be a Jedi? And you're going to meet Cheewie? Will Luke appear? Who knows... But Star Wars is still a lot of fun when you get into the rhythm of your laser sword. At the time of recording, the only actual member of Tiger Army was Nick 13, the alias of Kearney Nick Jones, the only constant member of the band through its 27 year existence. Nick 13 was joined in the studio by Rob Peltier on bass (originally from the band The Quakes) and Adam Carson on drums (originally from the band AFI). An album in the Psychobilly genre, the album also explores themes from the Horror Punk and plain old Punk genres. Critical reviews at the time said that the album had clear reverence for the sound of early rock and roll and also praised the often humourous writing of the lyrics. Will Luke and the boys find this album to be a lyrical riot, or will they outlaw it from their playlists? Come along and find out!

Luke, Matt, Scott and Mike are back from vacation just in time to talk about WWE biographies on A&E. Piper, Warrior, Macho Man are all dead, but there are still a lot more alive than dead when you dig into the research. Did you know that Action Bronson lost 127 pounds recently? Fuck, is it still delicious? Friend of the show Danny has his own podcast called Music Friends, but what blows Scott's mind is how much better Danny sounds with a lesser mic than him. Breaking news: Les Miles is still an unscrupulous bastard. Make sure you check out the You, Me and An Album podcast that Mike was on recently. Picking a favorite album is an impossible endeavor for Mike, so he started a playlist of his favorite albums of all time. One of those albums is by Slowdive and it turns out that Luke would constantly be on the brink of suicide if he had to listen to music like Slowdive's on a regular basis. Mental health talk gets real too on this episode. Luke opens up a bit to share some insight on the challenging disorders that he deals with daily. The band Hum is a classic 90s band and their drummer Bryan St. Pere died a couple weeks ago. If you don't know Hum it's time to give them a chance and pay tribute to their fallen drummer who died at 52. Matt makes a great point when he says that Destroyer and LCD Soundsystem drive him bonkers. Will Luke hate it? Tune in to find out! Lastly, over 20 years later and the debate between Peyton Manning and Ryan Leaf rages on. Give us your thoughts on any of this nonsense by emailing us at isitsafepod@gmail.com
Another quarantine episode from The Bastard Sermon! Long distance cant stop these boys, say safe inside and listen to another episode of silliness! Will Patrick father some chickens? Will Cody understand the greatness of Pauly Shore? Will Luke gain the title of Wasp Slayer? Tune in you jerks!
