The review of 2024 films are in full swing, but first there is the annual look back at the movies seen last year that were NOT FROM last year. Its the NOT 2024 Top Ten, where we highlight films worthy of a second discussion because they just impacted us so much. And for the 3rd year running on this particular episode, Dave, Mikey, and #TwitterlessDrEarl welcome in Friend of the Show, streaming live from the freezing metropolis somewhere in Bainbridge, Wyoming, that is one Jacob "Roth from Wyoming." Together, the foursome discuss their top ten faves of the year from all over the place, as far back as the early 20s and 30s to all the way through the 60s and 70s and in 2010s and 2020s... assigned movies come into play as films others were asked to watch appear in various Top Tens, while Burgess recommended movies keep coming up as well. Mikey is loving some old Gena Rowland and Walter Matthau as an action star, while #XLessDrEarl digs into more music docs, Dave revisits a Hallmark fave, and Roth finally sets sail on the ship of dreams. Plus, why did Green Book get so much hate, Eastwood represents (even if he is a d-bag of a romantic partner) and Powers Boothe makes another list. Also... Garrison makes a random appearance with lots of Chucky Grodin love. Movies discussed, and where to find them at time of recording: Atlantics (Netflix) Bob Dylan: Don't Look Back (MAX; Criterion Channel) The Boys Next Door (Hallmark Movie Now) A Brighter Summer Day (Criterion Channel) Dirty Harry (for rental) Duck Soup (rental) Extreme Prejudice (rental) A Few Good Men (AMC+; rental) Frankenstein (rental) French Connection (rental) Gimme Shelter (MAX; Criterion Channel) Green Book (FXNow) Hang 'Em High (MGM+; TubiTV) Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmakers Apocalypse (rental) Into the Wild (Hoopla; rental) The Last of the Mohicans (rental) Magnolia (rental) Margin Call (Amazon Prime; TubiTV) Minari (rental) Modern Romance (rental) The Outlaw Josey Wales (rental) Priscilla (MAX) Safety Last (MAX) Seven Samurai (MAX; Criterion Channel) The Shawshank Redemption (AMC+) The Sunset Limited (MAX) State and Main (Amazon Prime) Stop Making Sense (rental) Suicide Kings (Amazon Prime; TubiTV) Taking of Pelham 1-2-3 (Hoopla; TubiTV; MGM+) Targets (Hoopla; rental) The Thing (Shudder; rental) The Three Musketeers (Plex; rental) Titanic (Paramount+) Tremors (Paramount+ on AppleTV; rental) Twelve Monkeys (rental) 2010: The Year We Make Contact (rental) While We're Young (rental) While You Were Sleeping (Disney+) Woman Under the Influence (MAX; The Criterion Channel)

----------------------------------------

Is it conceivable for a brand to be “authentic” when that authenticity is meticulously constructed? We're inherently skeptical of the messaging disseminated by corporations and politicians, yet we rely on the stories they tell to express ourselves. Authentic propaganda, a paradoxical concept, depends on the audience's voluntary acceptance of a fabricated narrative to reconcile the inner conflict between the desire for authenticity and the belief that it's all a facade. Drawing inspiration from '90s postmodernism and featuring brands like Coca-Cola/OK Soda and Donald J. Trump. Wanna be a guest on our podcast? For this week's episode, Jamelle and John were joined by Linda Holmes of NPR's Pop Culture Happy Our to discuss the 1995 political romantic comedy “The American President,” directed by Rob Reiner, written by — you guessed it — Aaron Sorkin, and starring Michael Douglas, Annette Bening, Martin Sheen, David Paymer, Samantha Mathis and Michael J. Fox, among others.“The American President” stars Michael Douglas as President Andrew Shepherd, a widow, who falls in love with an environmental lobbyist, played by Annette Bening, while he also runs for re-election and attempts to pass major legislation. The film is both a romantic comedy, depicting the president's courtship, and a political drama, depicting the effort to win votes, dodge criticism and shore up the White House's political position. The tagline for “The American President” is “Why can't the most powerful man in the world have the one thing he wants most?”“The American President” is available for rent or purchase on Amazon and iTunes. Our next episode will on the 1995 science-fiction thriller, “Twelve Monkeys.” Connor Lynch produced this episode.
My guest this week is Dereck Daschke whom I had the great pleasure of interviewing in Salt Lake City when we were both reviewing films at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2023 for the Journal of Religion and Film. Dereck teaches Religious Studies at Truman State University in Missouri and, like me, works in the area of religion and film. We find out about Dereck's dissertation in Graduate School on Freud and the apocalypse and Dereck reflects on whether film can be a stand in for religious experience. We also discuss apocalyptic revenge fantasies and the Mad Max films. Dereck talks about his Lutheran upbringing in the Chicago suburbs and we find out why he has always been drawn to academia. He has a seminal memory of seeing 2001: A Space Odyssey in the basement of his local public library. We find out why this film made such an impact. The psychology of transcendence has always interested Dereck, and we learn about Dereck's interest in Bob Dylan and his memories of seeing Dylan and Tom Petty in concert in the mid-80s. We talk about Dereck's stand up comedy, and how there is a fine line between teaching and stand up, in terms of performance. We learn about the processes behind this as well as what Dereck learns from teaching, and how it can be so fulfilling. We discover what made Dereck study religion, and how it overlaps with psychology and mental health, and why religion is a bone he can't let go of, and we find out why films and religion are involved in the same sort of enterprise in terms of challenging the way we understand reality to work. We discover why Twelve Monkeys and Monty Python and the Holy Grail are such pivotal films for Dereck, and we learn that Dereck is ordained to officiate at Dudeist weddings. Then, towards the end of the interview, we find out what his younger self would have expected to do, and Dereck reflects on the question of what is the myth or story we are living through, and how we are in the middle of our own stories. We also learn why Dereck is more of a looking forward person today than he used to be.

Plot:In AD 932, King Arthur and his squire, Patsy, travel Britain searching for men to join the Knights of the Round Table. Along the way, Arthur debates whether swallows could carry coconuts, passes through a town infected with the Black Death, recounts receiving Excalibur from the Lady of the Lake to two anarcho-syndicalist peasants, defeats the Black Knight and observes an impromptu witch trial. He recruits Sir Bedevere the Wise, Sir Lancelot the Brave, Sir Galahad the Pure, and Sir Robin the Not-Quite-So-Brave-as-Sir-Lancelot, along with their squires and Robin's minstrels. Arthur leads the knights to Camelot, but, after a musical number, changes his mind, deeming it "a silly place". As they turn away, God appears and orders Arthur to find the Holy Grail. Arthur and his knights arrive at a castle occupied by French soldiers, who claim to have the Grail and taunt the Britons, driving them back with a barrage of barnyard animals. Bedevere concocts a plan to sneak in using a Trojan Rabbit, but no one hides inside it, and the Britons are forced to flee when it is flung back at them. Arthur decides the knights should go their separate ways to search for the Grail.A modern-day historian filming a documentary on the Arthurian legends is killed by an unknown knight on horseback, triggering a police investigation. Arthur and Bedevere are given directions by an old man and attempt to satisfy the strange requests of the dreaded Knights Who Say "Ni!" Sir Robin avoids a fight with a Three-Headed Knight by running away while the heads are arguing amongst themselves. Sir Galahad is led by a grail-shaped beacon to Castle Anthrax, which is occupied exclusively by young women, who wish to be punished for misleading him, but he is unwillingly "rescued" by Lancelot. Lancelot receives an arrow-shot note from Swamp Castle. Believing the note is from a lady being forced to marry against her will, he storms the castle and slaughters several members of the wedding party, only to discover the note is from an effeminate prince. Arthur and his knights regroup and are joined by three new knights, as well as Brother Maynard and his monk brethren. They meet Tim the Enchanter, who directs them to a cave where the location of the Grail is said to be written. The entrance to the cave is guarded by the Rabbit of Caerbannog. Underestimating it, the knights attack, but the Rabbit easily kills Bors, Gawain and Ector. Arthur uses the "Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch", provided by Brother Maynard, to destroy the creature. Inside the cave, they find an inscription from Joseph of Arimathea, directing them to Castle Aarrgh. An animated cave monster devours Brother Maynard, but Arthur and the knights escape after the animator unexpectedly suffers a fatal heart attack. The knights approach the Bridge of Death, where the bridge-keeper demands they answer three questions in order to pass or else be cast into the Gorge of Eternal Peril. Lancelot easily answers simple questions and crosses. Robin is defeated by an unexpectedly difficult question, and Galahad fails an easy one; both are magically flung into the gorge. When Arthur asks for clarification on an obscure question about swallows, the bridge-keeper cannot answer and is himself thrown into the gorge. Arthur and Bedevere cannot find Lancelot, unaware that he has been arrested by police investigating the historian's death. The pair reach Castle Aarrgh, but find it occupied by the French soldiers. After being repelled by showers of manure, they summon an army of knights and prepare to assault the castle. As the army charges, the police arrive, arrest Arthur and Bedevere for the murder of the historian and break the camera, ending the film. TOP 51: Done on an incredibly small budget, the Pythons found funding from an unlikely sources—rock bands. Groups like Led Zeppelin, Jethro Tull, and Pink Floyd helped get the money up for the production, with a portion of the funds coming from the Floyd's album “The Dark Side of the Moon.” This is a trend that would continue later with The Life of Brian, when a large portion of the funding came from former Beatle George Harrison. When Harrison was asked why he funded the film, he responded “Because I wanted to see it.” 2: The film also represents the directorial debuts of both Terry Jones and Terry Gilliam, who decided that anyone named Terry got to direct the Pythons' first film. Attempting to co-direct at the same time led to conflicts, so the Terrys split up the responsibilities with Jones handling the actors while Gilliam worked on the cinematography. They'd go on to direct the remaining Python films together and Jones would additionally direct Mr. Toad's Wild Ride, while Gilliam's lengthy directorial career would include such artistic classics as The Fisher King, Brazil, Time Bandits, Twelve Monkeys, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus, and more. 3: The vicious Killer Rabbit of Caerbannog had parts of its fur dyed red to represent the blood of the knights that it spilt with its large, pointy teeth. Unfortunately, the dye used wouldn't wash out afterwards and the rabbit's owner was furious. 4: By the time the Pythons actually got around to doing the credits, they'd run out of money. As a result, the credits were very simple and Palin decided to spice them up a bit by adding the Swedish subtitles and llama references. When the film was shown for the first time at Cannes, firemen rushed in at the end of the credits to evacuate the audience due to a bomb scare. The crowd didn't leave at first because they thought it was part of the show. 5: n part due to the low budget, Chapman and Cleese did all their own stunts for the Black Knight scene. The two used heavy swords and some acrobatics for added realism. Connie Booth had brought her and Cleese's young daughter to the filming, who during the fight turned to her mum and said “Daddy doesn't like that man, does he?” **TRIPLE LINDY AWARD** **REVIEW AND RATING**TreyChrisStephen 1.5Tucker 3 TOP 5Stephen:1 Breakfast club2 Saving Private Ryan3 Ghostbusters4 Sandlot5 Color out of space Chris:1. sandlots2. Career Q&A with Christopher Meloni. Moderated by Jenelle Riley, Variety. Washington, D.C. native Christopher Meloni studied acting at the University of Colorado, Boulder, before graduating with a degree in History. He worked in construction and as a bouncer before breaking into acting, studying his craft in New York with legendary teacher Sanford Meisner. His television breakout role was on “NYPD Blue,” opposite Kim Delaney. That led to being cast on HBO's gritty landmark series “Oz,” playing the psychotic, bisexual serial killer, ‘Chris Keller.' In 1999, Meloni landed his starring role on the popular and long-running NBC series “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,” with the actor working in both series simultaneously until “Oz” ended its 6 year run in 2003. He continued on “Law & Order: SVU” for twelve seasons, earning an Emmy nomination for his performance as Detective Elliot Stabler. Meloni then returned to HBO in a pivotal arc as the head of the Vampire Authority, ‘Roman,' in Alan Ball's wildly popular drama, “True Blood;” and as Julie Louis-Dreyfus' trainer, ‘Ray,' in “Veep.” Meloni is currently co-starring in the Netflix limited event series, “Wet Hot American Summer” which is the prequel to the cult film in which he also co-starred. Meloni's other big screen credits include the August 2015 Sony Classics release, "Diary of a Teenage Girl " with Kristen Wiig; Greg Araki's "White Bird in a Blizzard"; "Sin City: A Dame to Kill For"; "Man of Steel"; "42"; "They Came Together"; "Small Time"; the Terry Gilliam films "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" and "Twelve Monkeys"; the Wachowskis' first film "Bound"; the romantic comedy blockbuster "Runaway Bride"; "Nights in Rodanthe"; and such cult favorites as "Wet Hot American Summer", "Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle", and its first sequel, "Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay".

Terry Gilliam is serving up Bruce Willis in a full-body condom time-traveling to 1990s Philly to hang out with a wild-eyed Brad Pitt? And America says... Yes please! We love it! '12 Monkeys' probably shouldn't work on any level, but it was a critical and box-office hit that changed sci-fi filmmaking and Hollywood as a whole. It also evolved how we tell time travel stories with a fascinating approach to time loops. We dig into all of that, the French short film 'La Jetée that inspired this script, and our favorite tracks from "The Return of Bruno" (okay, maybe not that last part), as break down this modern classic about a dozen or so primates! The NeverEnding Movie Marathon is a weekly podcastic celebration of cinema. The idiots have traveled back in time to release this episode about the 1995 film Twelve Monkeys. There are plenty of monkeys and no shortage of times being traveled. One of you may accidentally be teleported to the World War I battlefield and shot in the leg... but that is a sacrifice we are willing to make.Music: Dark 'n' Stormy by Shane Ivers - https://www.silvermansound.
In honor of our tenth episode we finally dug out the Rocky theme, it was only a matter of time. It seemed the only fitting way to close out a short audio piece recorded at a rally in support of the PA Film Tax Credit held on the steps at the Art Museum on June 3, 2017. Featured soundtracks of films shot in Philly include Peter Gabriel's score for Birdy, Paul Buckmaster's theme for Terry Gilliam's Twelve Monkeys and James Newtown Howard's score for M. Night Shyamalan's Unbreakable. We also devote a set of music to Sofia Coppola who just became only the 2nd women to be named Best Director at the Cannes Film Festival. Hear music from her first short film Lick the Star, Lost in Translation, Somewhere, Virgin Suicides and Marie Antoinette.
Episode Number 52: 12 MONKEYS (1995)This week we journey back to 1995 for Terry Gilliam's (BRAZIL, THE FISHER KING) time travel film 12 MONKEYS. This one stars Bruce Willis (DIE HARD, THE SIXTH SENSE), Madeleine Stowe (SHORT CUTS, BLINK), and led to an Oscar nomination and Golden Globe win for Brad Pitt (FIGHT CLUB, SEVEN).Have you seen this one? Are you a Terry Gilliam fan? How do you think 12 MONKEYS ranks among time travel films?Send us know your thoughts at chrisandchristalkmovies@gmail.com Welcome to Chris & Chris Talk Movies. In this podcast, life-long friends Chris Ferry and Chris Huddleston discuss Sci Fi movies (sometimes the best Sci Fi movies, sometimes not), horror movies (occasionally some of the all time best horror movies…often…not), a few of the very best action movies (I think you see where we're going with this), and genre films from their childhood and beyond in this laid-back, rambling, but inviting series!Rated PG for occasional mature language and alcohol consumption.
THAT PODCAST... in which the truth is out there, we jump down the conspiracy theory rabbit hole, let A.I. run our lives for a while, and wonder if democracy stands a chance - PART ONEFrom one epic twist to the next, from cliff-hanger to nail-biter, the last year has tested anyone's suspension of disbelief in reality. Perhaps it is not surprising then that there has been a huge surge in the amount of people promoting and subscribing to conspiracy theories. Acclaimed director Terry Gilliam goes down the rabbit hole to sort the fact from the fiction. In part 1, he is joined by co-host Mark Kermode, to delve into the prophetic film Twelve Monkeys. We hear original commissions from playwrights Kimber Lee and Gary Owen, as well as an interview with Professor Stephan Lewandowsky.Episode 5, Part 1 credits: Host - Terry GilliamGuest - Mark KermodeGuest - Professor Stephan LewandowskyCommissioned pieces:Breadcrumbs by Kimber Lee Hansel - Jack RowanGretel - Sorcha GroundsellThe Woman - Lizzy WattsDirector - Robert DelamereSound Designer - Ben WalkerWriter - Kimber Lee Parallel Play by Gary Owen Nic - Mali HarriesAlex - Siôn Daniel YoungDirector - Richard TwymanSound Designer - Mike WinshipWriter - Gary Owen Host script - Jennifer Bakst and Terry Gilliam Interview sound recording - James HingleyInterview editor - Martha LittlehailesTestimonials Research - Aina J. In what has got to be one of the stranger films that have been covered on the pod, Ian and Seán discuss Terry Gilliam's 1995 film Twelve Monkeys, which is most certainly NOT the TV show (Ian makes this point once or twice. Or thrice). Though not nearly as a brain-melting as Shane Carruth's Primer, it is certainly a movie that requires a pot of coffee and potentially, LSD, to make sense of. That said, Bruce Willis, Madeline Stowe and Brad Pitt deliver fantastic performances! Between Two Fires: Truth, Ambition, and Compromise in Putin's Russia ("Меж двух огней: правда, амбиции и компромиссы путинской России"). The perfect pandemic film, Terry Gilliam’s 12 Monkeys has it all: time travel, the earth healing itself as humans get killed off, and Brad Pitt being TOTALLY CRAZY. Sorry we’ve been away, a lot has happened since we last recorded. A little thing called COVID-19 has really been narshing our high. 12 Monkeys on IMDB.

"5 billion people will die from a deadly virus in 1997... the survivors will abandon the surface of the planet... once again the animals will rule the world..."—12 Monkeys For the third of our Movie Review podcasts here at TMR we welcome back GK (of Like Flint Radio) and Frank Johnson (of the Ancient Aliens Debunked blog) for a roundtable discussion on Terry Gilliam's 1995 film Twelve Monkeys starring Bruce Willis and Madeleine Stowe. His other film credits include "Carlito's Way," "Twelve Monkeys" and the 1996 critically-acclaimed film "The Sunchaser" opposite Woody Harrelson which he was nominated for the Cannes Film Festival's esteemed Palme d'Or (Best Actor Award). Kirsty Young's castaway is the animator and director Terry Gilliam. He first planted his foot-print on our cultural landscape more than thirty years ago - back then, it was a huge, animated foot which squashed everything beneath it and became one of the defining images of Monty Python's Flying Circus. In the years since, his film credits have included Brazil, Twelve Monkeys and The Imaginarium of Dr Parnassus. Now aged 70, he's directing his first opera. He says: "I've always liked the extremes, the edges. I like to know where the cliff is, but you only find out by stepping off."
