In Romans 7:1-6, Paul continues his letter by showing us that freedom in Christ goes even deeper than being dead to sin... we have also been released from the law's grip. Many Christians live as if God's love rises and falls with their spiritual performance, turning faith into a checklist of fear and obligation. But Paul reminds us that through the death of Christ, our old relationship to condemnation is over. We now belong to the risen Jesus, not as people trying to earn love, but as people already held by it. This kind of freedom does not lower the standard; it changes the engine. Dead to the Law, Alive in Christ by Good News Baptist Church

Galatians 2:19-2119 “For through the law I died to the law so that I might live for God. 20 I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. 21 I do not set aside the grace of God, for if righteousness could be gained through the law, Christ died for nothing!”[a]

Dead to the LawRomans 7:1-6August 3, 2025Main Point: God is glorified as He frees us from the curse of the law.Being dead to the law means:1. The law no longer has dominion over us.2. We are freed through Jesus Christ.3. We should bear fruit to God.

The wages of sin is death, but in a paradoxical way, death is also the means of freedom.  In this passage, the apostle Paul shows us that because the Christian is dead to his bondage to the law, he is free to be joined to the risen Christ - the One who defeated death - so that he can bear fruit to the glory of God.

How can you be considered dead to the law while still being alive and breathing? In the ninth episode of "The Cross," Duane Sheriff explains that a transformation occurs during salvation. Believers die to the law and become united with Christ. Through Christ's death and resurrection, they are freed from sin and the law, enabling them to serve God through grace and faith rather than legalistic obedience.In Romans 7, Paul uses the marriage analogy to illustrate our new covenant with Christ. Just as death releases us from the bonds of marriage, Christ's death on the cross has freed us from our 'marriage' to sin and the law. At salvation, believers are crucified with Christ. As a result, we die to the Law, and consequently we die to sin. Once we're taken out from under the dominion of the Law, sin no longer has power over us. As the Scripture states: “apart from the Law, sin is dead” (Romans 7:8). Under God's grace, we end up living a godly life motivated by God's Spirit within us, not by moral regulations from the Old Testament (Titus 2:11-12).

Because we have died to the jurisdiction of the old covenant Law and now live through faith-union with Christ, we must no turn back to the Law as the focus of our lives, but to Christ alone by faith.-I. Because salvation is by faith in Christ alone and not works of the Law, we cannot go back to the Law as the foundation for our lives we must go on to Christ- vv 16-18-II. Because we have died with Christ by faith, we are dead to the Rule of Old Covenant Law v 19-20a-III. The Whole of our lives is now found in union with Christ, not in adherence to OT Law- vv 20-21

There once was an entire region of churches filled with people who were somehow tricked—by jackasses—into believing that Jesus wasn't enough. Although they had experienced the only real freedom there is in this world, these people (known forever as the Galatians) were bamboozled into believing something other than the death and resurrection of Jesus was required of them to live in fellowship with God. If you've ever wondered what a Bible writer sounds like when he's pissed—this letter is it. The gloves are off, and the Apostle Paul is pulling zero punches. He is flat-out dumbfounded and beyond frustrated that they would fall for it. And just you wait until you hear what he has to say to those who threw his dear friends into such confusion. Rules have their place. They regulate our streets to promote our safety. But rules of the road can't make a good driver. You need more than rules for that. Some point to Romans 7:1-6 to teach that believers are dead to the law. In fact, some go so far as to say that the Law of Moses has no authority over us. Is that what Paul is telling us in Romans 7?
