Esta historia me conmovió de verdad. Gloria fue criada en el campo, Jair era ingeniero y terminó aprendiendo a la fuerza lo que significa trabajar una finca sin descansos, sin sábados ni domingos, solo para sobrevivir. El reloj del apocalipsis, que nos asusta todos los años, este 2026 coloca el fin del mundo a solo 85 segundos de distancia del presente. "¡Y se nos van a hacer largos!" bromea Jaime García Cantero, al hilo del informe sobre el conocimiento científico de los españoles presentado por la Fundación BBVA. Una cuarta parte de los españoles, por ejemplo, piensa que los alienígenas han visitado la Tierra pero que los gobiernos lo ocultan, o que el cambio climático es un invento de los científicos para cobrar subvenciones. Afortunadamente, el porcentaje de españoles que no creen en las vacunas es bajo pero, a pesar de eso, Nuño comenta que España ha perdido la excelencia vacunal y la OMS nos ha retirado del grupo de países en los que estaba eliminado el sarampión. Estas ideas anticientíficas no son solo producto de la desinformación, sino que están generadas por el cinismo de algunas élites y la estupidez de muchos individuos. Hablamos de la estupidez en el sentido que le daba el filósofo italiano Carlo María Cipolla: "Una persona es estúpida si causa daño a otras personas sin obtener ganancia personal alguna o, incluso peor, perjudicándose a sí misma." Los antivacunas serían un ejemplo de estupiez de libro. Nuño nos explica qué es y para qué sirve Alphagenome, el nuevo sistema de Google DeepMind para entender la función de las secuencias largas de ADN que se anunció ayer en Nature, y nos ayuda a reflexionar sobre qué significa que una gran tecnológica, con un evidente afán de lucro, se ponga  hacer ciencia básica.Además, hablamos del estreno del documental Melania, que coincide en la misma semana en la que Amazon anuncia 16.000 despidos, y de la empresa Polymarket, que permite apostar por sucesos políticos extraordinarios, como la detención de Maduro, y que cuenta entre su accionariado con gente que sin duda cuenta con información privilegiada. Terminamos celebrando la vida de la matemática negra Gladys Mae West, que falleció esta semana a los 95 años. Nació en la Virginia de las leyes segregacionistas, que prohibían que los negros fueran a la universidad, y a pesar de eso consiguió entrar a trabajar como matemática en la Marina y contribuyó a la invención del GPS. Ya jubilada, hizo el doctorado. En el MCT se habla de muchos estúpidos, pero también caben las personas que son todo lo contrario. Ojalá fuera más relevante la segunda que los primeros.

A los 14 años, escapó de casa buscando protección, pero encontró más violencia. Se casó nuevamente, tuvo más hijos, trabajó honestamente. Durante años buscó desesperadamente a su hijo mayor, quien fue desaparecido por su ex pareja durante 10 años. Basándose únicamente en que el vehículo estaba a su nombre, sin ninguna otra prueba, sin testigos que la vincularan, sin cómplices identificados, fue acusada de secuestrar sola a un hombre de 32 años. Hoy cumple una sentencia de 50 años de prisión por un delito que no cometió. Lleva 2 años y 8 meses encarcelada. Tiene 40 años. Si cumple la sentencia completa, saldrá a los 90. La historia de Janette expone las fallas estructurales del sistema de justicia mexicano: condenas sin pruebas suficientes, presunción de culpabilidad en lugar de inocencia, y cómo las víctimas de violencia sistemática terminan siendo doblemente castigadas por un Estado que nunca las protegió. IMPORTANTE: Este episodio contiene descripciones de violencia doméstica, abuso y temas relacionados con salud mental que pueden ser difíciles para algunos espectadores. Based solely on the fact that the vehicle was registered in her name, with no other evidence, no witnesses linking her to the crime, no identified accomplices, she was accused of kidnapping a 32-year-old man by herself. Today she's serving a 50-year prison sentence for a crime she didn't commit. She's been locked up for 2 years and 8 months. She's 40 years old. Ces quinze dernières années, la ville de Baga Sola dans la province tchadienne du Lac a connu un essor économique sans précédent avec l'arrivée massive d'organisations humanitaires déployées en réponse aux exactions de Boko Haram. Mais aujourd'hui, sous l'effet conjugué de la multiplication des crises et des baisses des financements occidentaux, les ONG se retirent de la zone, le Lac sombre dans l'oubli de l'aide internationale et Baga Sola périclite. De notre envoyé spécial de retour de Baga Sola, « Actuellement nous sommes au carrefour, station Cho Cherif », explique Vincent Gouara Lassou, agent de protection pour Handicap International à Baga Sola. Il nous sert de guide aujourd'hui. Ici, c'est le cœur de la ville. Avant « il y avait de l'ambiance. Il y avait des embouteillages tout au long de la route. Les gens mettaient ici des marchandises. Et quand vous regardez avec moi, maintenant tout est quasiment vide, décrit-il. Derrière là, c'était un bureau d'une ONG nationale. Ils ont perdu les financements. C'est pourquoi ils ont quitté ce bâtiment. C'est vraiment la crise. » Après 15 ans de crise humanitaire, l'attention se détourne du Lac. Les efforts sont redirigés vers l'Est du Tchad où affluent les réfugiés soudanais. Puis en janvier, la suspension de l'aide américaine est un nouveau coup dur : « Il y a des pères de familles qui se retrouvent à la maison, sans travail, puisqu'ils sont arrivés au terme de leur contrat et avec la rupture des financements ils sont partis. Donc, je me retrouve presque seul. Et cela m'affecte aussi. » « Ça nous a vraiment impactés » Tous les pans de l'économie sont touchés à Baga Sola. « Même au marché, vous trouvez des commerçants qui se plaignent car ils ne voient plus personne », intervient Vincent Gouara Lassou. Bienvenue Balong est l'un de ces commerçants. Il fournit les ONG en véhicules et carburant. « Auparavant par mois, je vendais au moins 68 000 litres. Mais de nos jours, je n'arrive même pas à vendre 30 000 litres. De 2015-2016 à nos jours, on est descendu à vraiment 35 % du chiffre d'affaires », se plaint-il. La politique de Trump et l'arrêt de nombreux financements ont été un coup dur. « Ça nous a vraiment impactés En janvier, on n'a pas travaillé. En février, on n'a pas travaillé. Jusqu'à mars, il n'y avait rien. Et si ça nous touche, ça touche aussi la population. Elle vit pire que nous », déplore-t-il. La population souffre également de l'arrêt des distributions du Programme alimentaire mondial qui a perdu près de la moitié de ses ressources au Tchad par rapport à l'an dernier. L'organisation humanitaire a également fermé son bureau de Baga Sola et cessé d'opérer les vols humanitaires vers la province, accentuant encore son isolement.
