How do you address non-Christians who express the fruit of the spirit (Eg they are patient)? Has God given these fruit even to those who belong to the flesh? Assuming the quality of our relationship with God is independent of our actions, can we not grow in the depth of our relationship with him? Why talk to him? Why learn about him/get to know him? Doesn't God love us when we obey him/live like Jesus? Does this have no effect on our relationship with him? What actually is "goodness"? How is it distinct from the other fruit of the Spirit listed in v22-23? Are those who commit the works of the flesh in v19-23, who will not inherit the kingdom, unsaved because these unrepentant works nullify faith, or is it that they still have faith but these works somehow disqualify them from eternal life? Is Galatians only referring to adding the Law onto salvation or can we apply it to other nuances the apostolic denominations (Catholic/Orthodox) add onto "Faith alone"? How do we know we can use Galatians to discern the truth of these practices if Galatians only uses examples from OT Law? In terms of guidance, how do we view Acts and how God directly instructs Paul etc?

In this sermon we cover a larger section: Exodus 20:22-22:15. There verses are part of the Old Testament Law. The OT Law is sometimes difficult to read through and apply to our lives. However, if we keep the big picture in mind, we will discover that this passage instructs us in what God cares about. He cares about worship, He cares about the value of life, and He cares about seeing restoration in the midst of the world's brokenness. Prepare to learn more about the heart of our Lord and be encouraged! What do I think God cares about? Do I care about worship, the value of life, and restoration? Why or why not?

Sunday, 7 July 2024   The Book of Matthew; an Introduction – Part III   With some of the interesting patterns found within the book of Matthew complete, we now return to finish the list of main purposes for the writing of the book.   4) The Pivotal Placement of Acts: The layout of the Bible forms innumerable patterns. One is seen in the order of how the books are placed, with Matthew beginning a key section of this layout –   Tent of Shem:   Genesis - Malachi (Law)   Synoptic Gospels according to the naming of Noah's sons (OT Law Fulfillment) * Matthew – Directed predominantly to Shem * Mark – Directed predominantly to Ham * Luke – Directed predominantly to Japheth   Mixture/Transition   John (mixture of OT Law and NT concepts/theology)   Acts – Transition / Jerusalem to Rome / Peter to Paul / Jew to Gentile / Shem to Japheth   Tent of Japheth (dwelling in, meaning between, tents of Shem)   Romans-Philemon – to Gentile-led church   Tent of Shem   Hebrews, James, 1 & 2 Peter to Jews (Shem)   Mixture   John (mixture)   Jude (mixture, final letter of warning)   Summary from John's time until the end   Revelation - 1:1 - 4:1 (church – Japheth)         4:2 - 19:21 (tribulation upon the whole world)          21 - (millennial reign and final battle – Shem)         22 - (restoration of all things good for all of mankind)   * Matthew begins the section of Law Fulfillment where Jesus' words and actions are directed specifically to the people of Israel who were serving under the law. During that entire period, no person was able to fulfill the law. According to Leviticus 18:5, the person who fulfilled the law would live. However, all continued to die.   Matthew's gospel, beginning with Jesus' genealogy, is provided to show that Jesus was the qualified Messiah, anticipated from ages past. The gospel narrative is then provided to show that Jesus is the capable Messiah who did, in fact, fulfill the law. In His fulfillment of it, the law was annulled, and a New Covenant was introduced.   5) Doctrinal Themes:   Historical – This reveals the actual life of Israel's Messiah, from birth through to His atoning death and glorious resurrection. Spiritual – This reveals the fulfillment of the law, God's standard by which the man who did the things of the law would live. Apostolic – This begins to reveal the united message of the synoptic gospels even though Matthew has a distinct audience (directed most specifically to the Jews and identifying Jesus as their Messiah/King). Political – This gospel reveals the truth that Christianity stemmed from Judaism and is the fulfillment of it, thus it establishes faith in Jesus as a legitimate religion (Religio Licita) within the Roman empire. Prophetic – This reveals the fulfillment of innumerable prophecies within the Jewish writings, some explicitly cited by Matthew.   6) A Very Brief Outline:   The Book of Matthew – Messiah as King   Book Superstructure/ The Son of David** Book Structure/ Links*** Book Outline Establishing Kingship - The Son of David Link to Genesis 1.  The right to rule.   Link to Exodus 2.  The prophesied King.   Link to Leviticus 3.  The anointed King.   Link to Numbers 4.  The kingdom attained and announced.   Link to Deuteronomy 5.  The King's surprising edicts.   Link to Joshua 6.  The King's surprising edicts (2).   Link to Judges 7.  The King's surprising edicts (3).   Link to Ruth 8.  The King's authority confirmed through word and action.   Link to 1 Samuel 9.  Demonstrations of the King's mercy.   Link to 2 Samuel 10.  Loyal subjects of the King.   Link to 1 Kings 11.  Exultation of loyal subjects; condemnation of the King's foes. Prophetic fulfillment of the Eternal Davidic King Link to Hosea 28.  The Risen King and His Great Commission.   ** The chosen super-structure is evident from Matthew's identifying Jesus with King David, the genealogy in particular sets the mood. In the first chapter, David is mentioned 6 times; 5 in the genealogy. The genealogy is divided into sections of 14 generations each    with David as the link. Interestingly, David is written d-v-d in Hebrew – of which the gematria value is 14.  d = 4 v = 6 d = 4, or a total of 14.   *** It is certain that chapter and verse divisions were not arbitrary but were divinely inspired. Matthew provides wonderful evidence of this fact (although we can be sure he didn't realize it was happening). See attached previously supplied patterns as evidence of these things.     Life application: In previous commentaries, the chronologically-snobberous teachings of those who dismiss dispensationalism have been addressed. Just because something new is introduced into biblical interpretation, it does not mean that what is presented is invalid. Suitable explanations for why dismissing dispensationalism is inappropriate were presented.   One of the doctrines that arises because of the dispensational model is that of the rapture. The doctrine is necessary because what happens to the church in Christ's coming, if it has actually not replaced Israel, is not sufficiently addressed by earlier teachings within the church.   From a dispensational understanding of biblical writings, the coming of Christ in His return to save Israel cannot be the same as the coming of Christ to receive His church. This is because even if the church is a part of the commonwealth of Israel (Ephesians 2:12), it is not the nation of Israel. Paul never hints at such a notion.   Therefore, the writings of Paul in 1 Corinthians 15, 1 Thessalonians 4, and 2 Thessalonians 2 cannot be speaking of matters related to Israel. In dismissal of this, rapture deniers say that the term “rapture” is never mentioned by Paul. However, a doctrine does not need a specific word for it to be valid.   The doctrine of original sin is clearly taught in Scripture, even if no such term is ever used. Likewise, the teaching of the Trinity is accepted by all orthodox Christian teachers of Scripture, and yet the name is never used.   Matthew's gospel is directed to Israel, under the law and demonstrating Christ's fulfillment of the law. With that complete, the New Covenant was introduced. With Israel's rejection of Christ, they were placed under the punishments of the Law of Moses, having remained under that law until a future date.   At that time, the Gentiles took the prominent role in the church while the number of Jews decreased to the point where there was but a remnant left at any time during the church age. When the dispensation of grace ends, the church must be removed in order to refocus the redemptive narrative on the nation of Israel.   Matthew's gospel has introduced something new into the redemptive narrative, the coming of Jesus Christ. Only in understanding the history of the world from a dispensational viewpoint does the overall scenario of what God is doing make proper sense.   There will be a rapture of the church. After that, the world will be prepared for Jesus' return to His long-wayward people to rule among them for a thousand years. Matthew clearly indicates that it is up to Israel's decision to acknowledge Jesus for Him to physically return to the earth and accomplish this –   “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing! 38 See! Your house is left to you desolate; 39 for I say to you, you shall see Me no more till you say, ‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!'” Matthew 23:37-39   Jerusalem refers to the national leadership of Israel, not the church. The church has already said “Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord.” They have done so for two thousand years. However, a day lies ahead when Israel will do this as well.   Lord God, thank You for allowing us to see wonderful treasures in Your word. They give us every confidence that it truly is from You, and it is revealing Your heart and mind to us. Yes, Lord God, thank You for Your precious word. Amen!

The Doctrine of Eschatology: Millennial Views Chris Hefner Key Text: Revelation 20:1-10 Major Millennial Views: 1. Premillennialism: Christ returns before the millennial reign. 2. Classic Dispensationalism: Schofield reference Bible; view is nearly heretical with God bringing about salvation in different ways in the OT as compared to the NT; very distinct views between promises to Israel and the church. 3. Progressive Dispensationalism: adopts much from inaugurated eschatology and the already/not yet tension; shaped by the Israel/church formulation from Covenant Theology. (In both forms of dispensationalism, God's theological/historical interventions with regard to salvation and redemption are shaped by the dispensation [that is OT or NT] in which persons find themselves. 4. Historic Premillennialism: shares some similarities with the eschatological framework of progressive dispensationalism but is an altogether different system due to rejection of a dispensational understanding of redemption history. 5. Postmillennialism: Jesus' return is ushered in by the spread of the gospel and the victory of the kingdom of God through his people. 6. Liberal Postmillennialism: the social gospel, the kingdom of God, and scientific advancements progress the world to an almost utopia before the return of Christ. 7. Theonomic Postmillennialism: the business of the church is to work toward a theocracy by integrating OT Law system with NT theology. 8. Dominion Postmillennialism: Charismatic in influence where the people of God gain “dominion” over wealth, prosperity, and the enemy to usher in the kingdom. 9. Reformed Postmillennialism: the millennial age commences at some point during the present age through the preaching of the gospel in which the kingdom of God triumphs over the kingdoms of this world. 10. Amillennialism: the millennium refers to the entire period of time between Christ's two advents; thus the millennium in Rev. 20 is symbolic. Theological Takeaway: No matter the eschatological millennial position you prefer, let the Bible interpret your position, not your position dictate the Bible. Worship Takeaway: That Jesus is the Coming King means that we can worship him as the King today. Evangelistic Takeaway: Our responsibility today as part of Christ's here and now kingdom is to spread the gospel and make disciples. Relational Takeaway: We should interact with patience and grace toward fellow believers who hold different views than we do. Reach out to us via email at: info@wilkesborobaptist.org

The “woman caught in adultery” is a renowned Gospel account, portraying Jesus' extraordinary forgiveness. This narrative is both unique and controversial; experts judge it wasn't originally written by John but added later by an interpolator. Nevertheless, it's recognized as an ancient and authentic episode showcasing Jesus' profound compassion and literary skills. The Pharisees present the accused woman to test Jesus' adherence to Moses' Law. In response, Jesus stoops and writes in the dirt twice, declaring, “Let the sinless one cast the first stone.” Struck by conscience, the accusers depart, and Jesus pronounces, “neither do I condemn you…” An intriguing parallel emerges between Jesus' writing ‘with his finger in the dirt,' and the Ten Commandments, ‘inscribed with God's finger.' The point is not what Jesus wrote, but that he wrote. His act of writing signifies Jesus shares the divine identity of the OT Law's author; the allusion establishes his authority to interpret and even amend it.  Applying the “law of Christ,” Jesus extends “no condemnation,” not only to the accused woman, but to all his believers. Like her, we are forgiven, & start anew, charged to live differently – “Go & sin no more.” “There is perhaps no other passage in the New Testament canon that is more beloved and yet more controversial than John 7:53-8:11, also known as the ‘Woman Taken in Adultery'.”—John D. Punch The adulteress' “story is…one of the most memorable in…Scripture…not only due to Jesus' astonishing and poignant acquittal of the adulteress…but also because [this] is the only text in the [NT] that presents Jesus as a man of letters.” –Alan Rudrum & Julia Schatz

What Is Meant By “The Law”? God's righteousness is universal, written on the hearts of men (Romans 2:12-16), predating the Law of Moses (Romans 1:18ff), reflected in the Law of Mosses (Romans 2:17ff), and still unchanging. God's righteousness remains, no matter what.Law (Pentateuch)=First five books of the Old Testament, including commands given in Exodus, Leviticus, and Deuteronomy.Law (Old Testament)=At times, the whole of the OT is referred to as "The Law" (Matt. 22:36; Luke 10:26; John 7:49; 10:34; 12:34; 15:25; 1 Cor. 9:8–9; 14:21, 34; Gal. 4:21) or "The Law and the Prophets" (Matt. 5:17; 7:12; 22:40; Luke 16:16; 24:44; John 1:45; Acts 13:15; 24:14; 28:23; Rom. 3:21; cf. Matt. 11:13)Law (Commands of God)=At times, Paul refers to the Law in reference to God's commands themselves (Rom. 3:21; 9:31; 10:4; Gal. 2:21; 3:11; 5:4; Phil. 3:6, 9, Eph. 2:15)What is the Purpose of the Law?Mirror: The Law shows us we are sinful because we can't keep it, even when we try (Rom. 3:20; 4:15; 5:13; 7:7-11), and it drives us to seek forgiveness in Christ (Gal. 3:19-24).Restraint: Applied to the civil sphere, the Law is used to restrain sin with the consequence of punishment (Deut. 13:6-11; 19:16-21; Rom. 13:3, 4).Guide: God has prepared good works for believers (Eph. 2:10), and we are commanded to obey God's commands (Matt. 28:20) which shows our love for Him (John 14:15). We are free from the Law as a means of salvation (Rom. 6:14; 7:4, 6; 1 Cor. 9:20; Gal. 2:15-19, 3:25), but we are "under the law of Christ" as a rule for living (1 Cor. 9:21; Gal. 6:2).Errors Related to the Law:Antinomianism: Shunning obedience to all of the OT Law, including the moral aspects of the Law.Judaizers: Those who believed that gentile Christians must become Jews to be saved (circumcision, dietary laws, ceremonial laws, etc.)Hebrew Roots: Belief that Greek and other pagan influences have dominated Christianity. Adherents (generally) believe that Christians must follow (all of) the OT Law and (generally) rabbinic tradition.Seventh Day Adventist: Cultic group that follows the teaching of a false prophet Ellen White. They deny essential doctrines and focus on obeying certain ceremonial traditions such as Saturday worship.

Loving Your Enemy: Interacting with people is hard, even with those you are closest to. Nearly everyone would agree that you should be loving and kind towards others, but this is often applied only to those who are like us or fall within our group. But what about those who are different than us, those with a different nationality, belief system, or political dogma? Jesus teaches that we should love not only those who are annoying, inconvenient, or who hurt our pride but those who are actively opposed to us as well... those we classify as our enemies. Recorded on August 14, 2022, on Matthew 5:38-48, by Pastor David Parks. This message is part of our sermon series "The Unexpected Way," from the Sermon on the Mount from Matthew 5-7 in the Bible. The way of Jesus is totally unique; it's different from every other way of life, philosophy, or religion. Why? Because the teaching of Jesus — emphasizing holiness, humility, justice, faith, and sacrificial love — leads to a whole new gospel-centered ethic. This ancient ethic, if actually practiced, has the power to bring abundant love and joy and peace to anyone, anywhere today. This is the way. Sermon Transcript All year, we're focusing on Learning the way of Jesus, which means that all year, we'll basically be answering the question, “If the gospel is true, how then should we live?” To start, we've been working through a very famous teaching of Jesus known as the Sermon on the Mount in a sermon series called, The Unexpected Way. And we've said that the teaching of Jesus leads to a whole new gospel-centered ethic which is not at all what we'd expect. The way of Jesus is a different way from the other philosophies or religions of the world. But, if it's actually put into practice, the way of Jesus leads to a life of love/joy/peace. For the past few weeks, Jesus has been teaching us what it really means to be a good person, for us to really live the life that God intended for human beings to live. And let me just take a quick survey today, do we think this has been easy teaching or hard teaching? Very hard teaching. Today, we have one more example from Jesus of the type of righteousness that he requires of his disciples, and it's maybe the hardest one yet. Are you ready for this? Are you sure? If you have a Bible/app, please open it to Matthew 5:38. We'll read through this and unpack it together. Matthew 5:38-48 (NIV), “38 “You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.'  39 But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also. 40 And if anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, hand over your coat as well. 41 If anyone forces you to go one mile, go with them two miles. 42 Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you. 43 “You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor  and hate your enemy.' 44 But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45 that you may be children of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. 46 If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? 47 And if you greet only your own people, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? 48 Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.” Again, just like the last three weeks, Jesus shows us that the OT Law has underlying principles that go way beyond what the Law allows or prohibits. But these underlying principles, rooted in God's character, are how God intends for human beings to actually live. In this case, how we are to respond, not just to people who like us or are like us, but to the most difficult/frustrating people in life, even to our enemies. Let's start again with v.38. Matthew 5:38-39a (NIV), “You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye,

How to Stay Married: If people matter so much to God, it only makes sense that God would care about how we treat one another in marriage. But this is a broken world. And sometimes, the most difficult people to love is the person you promised to love no matter what. So how do we do this? How do we stay married (if we're married) or think about marriage if, one day, we might get married? And how does this relate to being single? Recorded on July 31, 2022, on Matthew 5:27-32, by Pastor David Parks. The teaching of Jesus leads to a whole new gospel-centered ethic. But this way of life is really unique. The way of Jesus is just a radically different way from every other philosophy or religion in the world. Last week, we considered the value of human life and the key Biblical principle that people matter to God. And we saw that if people matter to God, then of course people should matter to us as well. But if this is how God cares for us, then the way we think about others and the way we treat others would really matter to God. Jesus dramatically raises the bar for us, saying that how we treat other people actually matters more to God than even our worship of him. We said that this was the first of six examples that Jesus gives about what it really means to be a good person. Today, we'll consider the second and third examples of Jesus in the area of marriage and divorce. And this is only a logical extension of the principle from last week. If people matter so much to God, it only makes sense that God would care a great deal about how we treat one another in marriage. But this is a broken world. And sometimes, the most difficult people to love are the people you promised to love no matter what (for better/worse, for richer/poorer, in sickness/health). So how do we do this? How do we, as followers of Jesus, stay married (if we're married) or at least think about marriage if, one day, we might get married? And how does this relate to being single? There's a lot to unpack here, so let's jump in. If you have a Bible/app, please open it to Matthew 5:27. Matthew 5:27-32 (NIV), “27 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.'  28 But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart. 29 If your right eye causes you to stumble, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. 30 And if your right hand causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into hell. 31 “It has been said, ‘Anyone who divorces his wife must give her a certificate of divorce.'  32 But I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, makes her the victim of adultery, and anyone who marries a divorced woman commits adultery.” Again, just like last week, Jesus shows us that an OT Law, in this case, the law against adultery, which is the seventh commandment in the Ten Commandments, has an underlying principle that goes way beyond w...

People Matter to God: What kind of person, family, or society does God want? What would the world, or our lives, look like if they truly reflected the Kingdom of Heaven? We'll consider four examples from the Sermon on the Mount. First, we would have a much higher value for human life. Why? Because people matter to God. All people. For followers of Jesus, this has huge implications for our attitude toward and treatment of others. Recorded on July 24, 2022, on Matthew 5:21-26, by Pastor David Parks. Sermon Transcript This month, we started our new annual theme for our preaching ministry, which is Learning the way of Jesus. The whole year, we'll be answering this big question, “If the gospel is true, how then should we live?” And we've said that the answer is rooted in learning a new way of life, which is the way of Jesus. To start, we've been working through a very famous teaching of Jesus known as the Sermon on the Mount in a sermon series called, The Unexpected Way. The way of Jesus is just a radically different way from every other philosophy or religion — and it's not at all what you'd expect. But the teaching of Jesus — emphasizing holiness, humility, justice, faith, and sacrificial love — leads to a whole new gospel-centered ethic. And this ancient ethic, if actually practiced, can bring a life of love/joy/peace to anyone, anywhere today. This is the way. Last week, we considered what it means to be a good person, and we saw that only the goodness/righteousness of Christ leads to our salvation. Not one of us has earned our way into the kingdom of heaven. But then, for the Christian, if the gospel is true, we're called to live our lives in a way that is good/right/true. So, what do you think this type of life looks like? Today, and for the next few weeks, we'll consider six examples of this type of life; or six examples of how life should work in God's kingdom. First up, Jesus teaches on the value of human life, but Jesus goes far beyond anything we'd expect. If you have a Bible/app, please open to Matthew 5:21. We'll read through this first and then unpack it together. Matthew 5:21-26 (NIV), “You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘You shall not murder, and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.' 22 But I tell you that anyone who is angry with a brother or sister, will be subject to judgment. Again, anyone who says to a brother or sister, ‘Raca,' is answerable to the court. And anyone who says, ‘You fool!' will be in danger of the fire of hell. 23 “Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother or sister has something against you, 24 leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to them; then come and offer your gift. 25 “Settle matters quickly with your adversary who is taking you to court. Do it while you are still together on the way, or your adversary may hand you over to the judge, and the judge may hand you over to the officer, and you may be thrown into prison. 26 Truly I tell you, you will not get out until you have paid the last penny.” As I mentioned, this is the first of six examples of the righteousness required by God; in other words, this is what it takes to actually be a good person. Jesus shows us here that each OT Law for ancient Israel had an underlying principle that went way beyond what the Law simply prohibits. But this underlying principle, rooted in God's character,

The Bible Chapel Sermons

Acts: Summary The book of Acts is the second book of a two-volume set written by a man named Luke. Luke was a Greek, probably from Antioch, and was a physician (Col. 4:14) The church historian, Eusebius, wrote that Luke was “by race Antiochian and a physician by profession” (Ecclesiastical History 3.4.6.). At some point in the middle of the 1st century, Luke became a Christian and was a member of Paul's missionary team (Col. 4:14, 2 Tim. 4:11, Philemon 24). He wrote the Gospel of Luke and Acts for a Greek named Theophilus, who possibly commissioned Luke to write these two volumes. Both books were completed by the early 60's A.D. The book of Acts explains how the church was born in Jerusalem when the Holy Spirit came (Acts 2), how it spread throughout Judea and Samaria due to persecution, and how it spread to the end of the earth—Asia and Europe—through Paul's three missionary journeys. Throughout the book of Acts Christianity was expressed as the completion of the Jewish faith. The promised Messiah had come. When Paul shared the Gospel, he always started in the local synagogues. And the Jewish believers continued to follow the traditions of Judaism. Then Gentiles became Christians and there was much tension between Jewish and Gentile believers. Finally, in Acts 15 the early church leaders met in Jerusalem to confirm that Jesus came to save Jews and Gentiles and Gentiles did not have to participate in Jewish rituals to be saved. Jesus provided a relationship by grace through faith—not by the works of the OT Law. Acts 28: Context By the time we get to Acts 28, Paul had completed three missionary journeys', was arrested, used his Roman citizenship to appeal to Caesar, and was on his way to Rome when the ship encountered a terrible storm. The boat was destroyed but all 276 people safely made it to shore just as God had promised (Acts 27:21-26). Two lessons from Acts 28 A Christian leader is, at heart, a servant. God often turns hard times into Gospel opportunities. Most biblical scholars believe that Paul was released from imprisonment in Rome after two years and resumed his ministry. He may have traveled to Spain. We know he traveled with Titus and left him in Crete and with Timothy and left him in Ephesus. He wrote letters to both young pastors. In 64 A.D. a great fire broke out in Rome. The emperor Nero blamed it on the Christians and significant persecution began. Paul was arrested again around 67 A.D. This time he was chained in prison and treated like a criminal (2 Tim. 1.16, 2.9). As he sat in prison, he knew his time was near. Read 2 Timothy 4:6-18. Paul was beheaded in Rome around 67 A.D. The Lord stood by his side and brought him safely into the heavenly kingdom. Jesus fills our hearts with himself and gives us the courage and one day usher us home. As Colossians reveals Jesus Christ as the Messiah of the Old Testament, how does this relate back to our study of Exodus? What's the connection between the OT Law and the Messiah? How should we regard the OT Law if we have Christ as our Messiah? This was a major debate in the early church (and still is today!); a debate Paul addresses in Colossians. Throughout his letter, Paul shows how the Law revealed our need for Christ, foreshadows who Christ is, and gives us confidence in Christ as our life!

Episode 50– Show NotesWe celebrate our 50th episode by getting down and muddy in the issue of divine practical advice. Christians celebrate it when ancient advice or OT Law tallies well with modern health advice, but they don't see the massive misses that there are in the Bible. We spend most of the time diving deep into the example of hand washing with soap, which is simple, within the technology of Bible times and has a massive impact on child mortality rates. Can we expect a loving God to help by giving this advice, especially when He visits earth in the incarnation? Some of the references and links we mentioned:Leviticus 13 & 14 for boils and mould. Chapter 15 for “an unusual bodily discharge” where there is lots of references to washing things and the only reference (v11) to anything remotely like hand washing in the community connected to health or food or sanitation or anything useful. The Christian podcaster excited about God's blessing in the Leviticus mould advice (we played this from 8min40s on):https://www.wholewordpodcast.com/790475/8617765-leviticus-14-mold-abatement-3500-years-before-science The key New Testament passage on Jesus' response to the Jews developing handwashing traditions around food is Mark 7:1-23. Ed made a meal from verses 8-9 and also 18-19. The Pharisees taught their precepts as though they were God's commands. Systematic theologians are tempted to do the same, especially when they pledge allegiance to a confession. Case in point is the arbitrary division of the OT Law into moral, civil, and ceremonial categories, with an insistence on keeping the sabbath.

Oftentimes, they become violent criminals or even murderers. Will they be judged by God the same as any other person, even though they have something physiologically wrong with them?2. 8:03 {What do Miracles/Healing Depend On?} If one were to pray over someone for a miracle or for healing, what would the chances of it working depend on? Jesus said that it depends on faith. Does it also depend on being a relatively righteous person?3. 15:07 {About Glorified Bodies/Resurrection} If our bodies are glorified at the rapture, what happens to those people who are saved post-rapture? Is there a second resurrection?4. 17:19 {About the Moral Argument} My brother has a very biblical worldview despite being an agnostic (in terms of homosexuality and celibacy, etc.) based on science. How do I prove that morality comes from God?5. 26:41 {Is Everyone Claiming to be Saved Really Saved?} Paul Washer said that Matthew 7: 13-14 is not about Christians and non-Christians, but rather, real Christians and Christians who think they’re saved. He says many who think they are saved aren’t really saved. Thoughts?6. 32:26 {About Giving Everything for the Lord} If salvation is a free gift and not by works, then why does Jesus say those of you who do not give up everything you have cannot be my disciples? How do we know when we have given up everything?7. 38:53 {Honesty vs. Kindness?} Where do you draw the line between honest communication about things that bother you about something someone does, and “dying to self” if the person is a very close friend/loved one/spouse?8. 44:09 {About Demons and The Nephilim} Are demons the spirits of dead Nephilim? Genesis 6 explains that the Nephilim are the offspring of women and angels. Demons never materialize, but we know angels can. Luke 22:3 is not convincing to me.9. 48:04 {Can We Love Truth More than God?} Can I be a truth-seeker and a good Christian? Is it possible to love the truth more than God, considering that Jesus is the truth?10. 55:35 {About the Sun Standing Still – Josh. 10} What do you think really happened during "the long day" in Joshua 10 during the battle between Israel and the armies of the 5 kings when "the sun stood still, and the moon stopped"?11. 58:20 {About the OT Law & Sacrifices vs. Faith} Why was the old covenant law set up to require animal sacrifice, since we see Abraham was atoned for by his faith in the promise to come of what was Jesus (dimly perceived)?12. 1:03:22 {Bethel Worship Music?} Can I keep listening to Bethel’s music, given the intent (as far as I understand) to invoke emotional responses? I want to avoid the idol of “emotional highs,” but I still see value in their music.13. 1:07:03 {About the 153 Fish in John} In John 21, it is written that Peter caught 153 "large fish" and that "although there were so many, the net was not torn." Is there a message or theme John was conveying here?14. 1:12:01 {Leaving a Church the Biblical Way} How do I go about leaving my church? Do I talk to my leaders? Do I have to explain why? What do I need to do to make sure that I do it the right way?15. 1:16:28 {About the Dead Jesus Raised} Where did all the people that Jesus and the disciples raised from the dead go while they were dead? I would hate to think they were in Paradise somewhere, then had to come back.16. 1:19:05 {About Asking for Forgiveness/Mark of the Beast} A popular internet ministry says Jesus never said we need to ask for forgiveness and the Bible doesn’t mention it.
