In 1900, the the newly Flannan isle lighthouse was staffed by three lightkeepers.  In December of that year a passing ship noticed the light was out at the light house and shortly after reporting the issue, a supply ship was sent to investigate.  When they approached the island, everything was quiet with no sign of life.  The mystery would only grow once they landed on the island and entered the lighthouse.Support the show (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/cosmicsponge)

Comment and see photos @ https://talkmurder.com/flannan-isle-mystery/-- The eerie disappearance of the three Flannan Isles Keepers has remained one of the most bizarre mysteries for over the last one hundred years.Thomas Marshall, James Ducat, and Donald McArthur were all experienced seafarers, ship hands, and captains and all more comfortable on the ocean than on land. The last journal entry written by Thomas Marshall on December 15th, 1900.“Strom ended, sea calm, God is over all.”The next day, the men were gone, and perhaps more daunting is that there were no storms reported in the area when they disappeared.

On Boxing Day, December 26th 1900, the lighthouse supply ship Hesperus arrived at the tiny island of Eilean Mor -- the largest of Flannan Islands off the northwestern coast of Scotland.  She was there to drop off food and supplies as well as relief keeper, Joseph Moore,  who was to begin his 6-week stint at the station.  But when repeated blasts of the horn and even a flare fired over the lighthouse failed to bring the keepers down to the dock, Captain Harvie became concerned.  So he sent Moore up to the lighthouse to discover why the men didn't come down to the landing to greet the ship.  Upon entering the living quarters, Moore found it deserted.   A thorough search of the island turned up few clues, but the bodies of the missing keepers were never found.  It was if James Ducat, Thomas Marshall and Donald McArthur had vanished into thin air.https://beyondthefringe.buzzsprout.com/

On 7 December 1900, Superintendent Robert Muirhead, of the Northern Lighthouse Board said farewell to his 3 lighthouse keepers, James Ducat, Thomas Marshall and Donald McArthur. They waved him goodbye as he stepped off the East landing at Eilean Mor onto his waiting boat to take him back to the mainland. The 3 lighthouse men were starting their next shift for 3 weeks on the island, taking care of the lighthouse and ensuring safe passage for the ships that passed by the Islands on the West Coast of Scotland navigating the often stormy and tempestuous Atlantic Ocean. What Robert Muirhead didn’t know at that time as he watched the three men head off into the distance was that he would likely be the last person to see them alive. The story surrounding the Flannan Isles Lighthouse has been a story of wonder and mystery for over a hundred years, what happened there and why? Let’s find out more

On this episode of Expanded Perspectives the guys star off the show by talking about how recently an abandoned oil tanker has washed up on the shores of Liberia in west Africa, prompting an investigation – and speculation over the fate of the ship’s crew. Then, the world of archaeology was electrified last year by the news that Tutankhamun’s tomb could contain hidden chambers possibly containing the remains and riches of Queen Nefertiti. It was a story that seemed to have everything: false walls, buried treasure, at least one mummy – and new hope for Egypt’s ailing tourist industry. There was just one problem: the announcement now seems to be unfounded. But scientists say the evidence, based on new research, is being suppressed by the government in Cairo. Then, the U.S. Air Force is looking to fund the development of a system that allows it to easily convert any of its manned aircraft into robot-piloted planes, potentially making huge portions of its existing fleet fully autonomous. Then, the consequences of not getting enough sleep are evident to all of us—and yet we’re constantly staying up later than what our internal biological clocks are telling us. A new study shows the elusive nature of what’s to blame. Then,  a strange new report about a 'frog as big as a goat' supposedly sighted one day by diver Duncan Macdonald while underwater in Loch Ness during the late 1800s. After the break, Kyle brings up the mysterious disappearance of three lighthouse workers in the Flannan Islands. In December 1900 three lighthouse-keepers, Thomas Marshall, James Ducat and Donald McArthur, on the lonely outcrop of the Flannan Isles, approx 20 miles from the Outer Hebrides, western Scotland, disappeared without trace. No solution to their disappearance has ever been found, and for over a 100 years now this case has been of endless fascination to those of us who love unsolved mysteries.
