386: The NHL's Unlikely First Season - With Bob Duff

We go North of the border this week for the curious story of the dramatic and chaotic origins of the National Hockey League with hockey historian and long-time Windsor Star sports columnist Bob Duff ("The First Season: 1917-18 and the Birth of the NHL"). While today's NHL is a global powerhouse celebrating over a century of hockey history, its very first season (1917-18) was a near disaster. Born out of a backroom maneuver to oust controversial Toronto owner Eddie Livingstone, the league's inaugural outing was anything but smooth.  From a player shortage caused by World War I conscription, to the sudden collapse of the four-team-league's Montreal Wanderers after their arena burned down, to competition from the rival Pacific Coast Hockey Association, to various threats of revenge from Livingstone - the NHL teetered on the edge of failure. And yet, against all odds, it survived. "The Duffer" walks us through that unlikely initial NHL season, the struggles that nearly ended it before it truly began, and the league's first-ever Stanley Cup championship - as the "Toronto Hockey Club" (or was it "Arenas" or "Torontos"?) bested the PCHA's Vancouver Millionaires in a best-of-five final. + + +   SUPPORT THE SHOW:  Buy Us a Coffee: https://ko-fi.com/goodseatsstillavailable "Good Seats" Merch: https://www.teepublic.com/?ref_id=35106   SPONSOR THANKS (AND SUPPORT THE SHOW!): Royal Retros (10% off promo code: SEATS): https://www.503-sports.com?aff=2 Old School Shirts.com (10% off promo code: GOODSEATS) https://oldschoolshirts.com/goodseats BUY THE BOOK (AND SUPPORT THE SHOW!): "The First Season: 1917-18 and the Birth of the NHL": https://amzn.to/3XQ1bFR FIND AND FOLLOW: Website: https://goodseatsstillavailable.com/ Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/goodseatsstillavailable.com X/Twitter: https://twitter.com/GoodSeatsStill YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@goodseatsstillavailable Threads: https://www.threads.net/@goodseatsstillavailable Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/goodseatsstillavailable/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/GoodSeatsStillAvailable/

Episode 357: On a sunny Wednesday afternoon, 21 June 1950, the tranquil tobacco farming community of Langton, of Langton, Ontario, was shattered by a violent crime that would leave an indelible mark on Canadian history. Joseph Herbert McAuliffe, a World War II veteran turned counterfeiter, walked into the Imperial Bank of Canada with robbery on his mind. In less than half an hour, two innocent men lay dead at the robber's hands, Arthur Lierman and William Goddyn, their bodies riddled with bullets, and a community was gripped by fear. For three harrowing days, Norfolk County held its breath as McAuliffe, armed and desperate, evaded capture in the surrounding woods. The manhunt that ensued would reveal a tale of tragic childhood, wartime heroism, and a descent into criminality that culminated in a botched robbery and senseless killings. As the story unfolded, it exposed the raw nerves of a nation grappling with questions of justice, redemption, and the ultimate price of crime. On May 20, 1947, decorated army veteran Jack Kettlewell and his friend Ronald Barrie barely escaped a devastating housefire at Ronald's cabin along the Severen River in rural Ontario, Canada. One day later, Jack's twenty-two-year-old wife, Christina Kettlewell, was discovered dead a short distance from the cabin, lying face down in a pool of shallow water and still wearing the pajamas she had on the night of the fire. During the autopsy, it was discovered that Christina's lungs were clear of smoke and her body was free of any burns or other signs of violence; rather, as unbelievable as it seemed, the cause of death was drowning. Christina and Jack had married in a secret ceremony held just eight days before the fire, leading many to wonder whether her new husband had something to do with her death. Was it a crime of passion? A calculated murder to cash-in on a life insurance policy? Or was it truly just a tragedy? And what of Ronald Barrie's presence on the trip? If it was indeed a honeymoon of sorts, why had the young newlyweds brought along a friend? In the months that followed, Christina Kettlewell's mysterious death captivated the residents of eastern Canada. With each new day, a piece of the puzzle seemed to fall into place, indicating that the mystery might soon be solved. Yet by mid-summer, a police investigation and the coroner's inquest had failed to provide an explanation for Christina's death or a satisfactory conclusion to the case. Today, more than seventy-five years later, the death of Christina Kettlewell remains one of Ontario's most enduring mysteries.Thank you to the wonderful David White, of the Bring Me the Axe Podcast, for research assistance!ReferencesIsai, Vjosa. 2017. When Annie Campbell uprooted her daughter from their home in Donegal, Ireland and relocated to Sauchie, Scotland in 1960, the move resulted in consequences far beyond what anyone could have expected. Removed from the only home she'd ever known, eleven-year-old Virginia Campbell did her best to acclimate to the foreign environment as she and her mother settled into the home of Virginia's aunt, but within just a few weeks of their arrival the family was under siege from an invisible entity Virginia would later name “Wee Hughie.”One of the most notorious cases of poltergeist activity in Scottish history, the case of the Sauchie poltergeist involved the usual trappings of poltergeist phenomenon—slamming doors, moving objects, and disruptive noises. Yet what set the phenomenon apart from myriad other cases of poltergeist phenomenon was that the supposedly supernatural phenomenon was witnessed by many bystanders, including Virginia's teachers and classmates. Was the Sauchie poltergeist a genuine example of paranormal activity, or was “Wee Hughie” nothing more than an elaborate hoax perpetrated by a creative girl seeking attention in the wake of major disruption in her life and environment?Thank you to the lovely David White, of Bring Me the Axe podcast, for research assistance :)ReferencesAssociated Press. 1960. In 1928, Belgian financier Alfred Loewenstein fell to his death from a private plane over the English Channel. How it happened has never been explained. In this week's episode of the Futility Closet podcast, we'll describe the bizarre incident, which has been called "one of the strangest fatalities in the history of commercial aviation." We'll also consider whether people can be eaten by pythons and puzzle over an enigmatic horseman. Intro: Philosopher Robin Le Poidevin offers a time-travel puzzle concerning an indefinite diary. Show #765   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Friday 1st May 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   AUDI INTRODUCES E-TRON SPORTBACK IN U.S., REVEALS PRICE AND RANGE "Today, Audi officially announced the market launch of its second all-electric model in the U.S., the e-tron Sportback, which will join the e-tron SUV in Summer." says InsideEVs: "The main differentiating factor between the two is that the Sportback has a coupe design. Both are available only in 55 quattro version - with a 95 kWh battery (in Europe there is also a 71 kWh battery version named 50 quattro). It will start from $77,400 (MSRP), which is $2,600 (or a few percent) more than for the SUV ($74,800). After deducting $995 of DST and $7,500 of the federal tax credit, effectively the price will be $70,895. The German manufacturer announced also an estimated EPA range of 218 miles (351 km), a full 14 miles more than in the case of SUV (204 miles / 328 km), however, there is a catch. The 2020 e-tron Sportback gets a 95 kWh battery with a usable capacity of 86.5 kWh (91%), while the SUV was certified in 2019, having a lower usable capacity of the same battery. Audi has upgraded the e-tron SUV to 86.5 kWh usable too."   Expected EPA: 218 miles (351 km) WLTP: 446 km (277.1 miles) energy consumption of 21.9-26.0 kWh/100 km (62 mi) WLTP 95 kWh battery pack (86.5 kWh net usable); liquid cooled, nominal voltage of 396 V 0-100 km/h (62 mph) in 6.6 seconds (5.7 seconds in boost mode) 0-60 mph (96.5 km/h) in 5.5 seconds in boost mode top speed of 200 km/h (124.3 mph) dual motor all-wheel drive (one asynchronous electric motor per axle) peak system output of 265 kW and 561 Nm (300 kW and 664 Nm in boost mode) weight of 2,480 kg (3,150 kg gross weight limit) AC charging via three-phase 11 kW on-board charger (22 kW option) DC charging 0-80% in about half hour, at up to 150 kW, using CCS Combo standard towing capacity up to 4,000 pounds when equipped with an available towing package   https://insideevs.com/news/419379/audi-e-tron-sportback-us-price-range/   HOTTER VW ID MODEL SPOTTED WITH CROSSOVER COUPE-LIKE DESIGN, COULD BE A GTX VARIANT "New spy shots of the ID.4 coupe crossover have emerged, giving us a better look at the electric SUV’s sportier variant. The model’s exact designation is unknown at the moment, with names like ID.4 Coupe, ID.4 GTX and ID.5 reportedly under consideration" reports CarScoops: "While nothing is official, previous reports have suggested the ID.4 will spawn a crossover coupe known as the ID.5. This prototype could be that model, but that’s just speculation at this point. Regardless, the ID.5 is slated to share powertrains with the ID.4 so we can expect a rear-wheel drive variant with 201 hp.  There should also be an all-wheel drive model boasting two electric motors and a combined output of 302 hp.   https://www.carscoops.com/2020/04/hotter-vw-id-model-spotted-with-crossover-coupe-like-design/   TESLA DROPS MODEL 3 PRICES IN CHINA TO BENEFIT FROM EV SUBSIDIES "Tesla wouldn't want to miss out on the Chinese government's generous incentives for what it calls a "new energy vehicle," so the electric carmaker made sure it will still qualify."  says CNET: "As of Thursday, Tesla went ahead and cut prices to meet the price ceiling, Reuters reports. Prices dropped by 10% to 271,550 yuan, or about $38,000 at current exchange rates, for a Model 3 Standard Range, the automaker's Chinese website shows. This new price includes the government incentives. Just a couple weeks ago, buyers faced a price of 303,550 yuan for the same car. China now requires a sale price under 300,000 yuan to qualify for the incentives, a 10% cut from the previous regulations. Next year, the government will drop the price ceiling another 20% as it continues to end support for EV purchases."   https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/tesla-model-3-prices-china-ev-subsidies/   ELON MUSK SAYS TESLA STOCK IS ‘TOO HIGH’—AND IT QUICKLY FALLS "Launching a Friday morning tweet-tear, SpaceX and Tesla CEO Elon Musk wrote, “Tesla stock price is too high imo [in my opinion].” Ask, believe, receive: The electric-car maker’s stock price immediately began to dip, finishing the day down 10 percent." reports Wired: "It’s curious for any executive to say the company’s stock is too high. It’s especially curious for Musk—even though, in just the past 48 hours, the billionaire has tweeted (then deleted) an image of a cursing unicorn topped by American flags and a pledge to rid himself of nearly all material possessions. That’s because Musk has been sued by US securities regulators for posting about his business before. To settle that case, he agreed to have tweets about Tesla reviewed by the company’s lawyers."   Wired take a view on what it could mean for Elon: "Because Musk knows more about his company—material, nonpublic information—than its investors, it's possible the CEO is using Twitter to manipulate the price of Tesla stock and lead investors to buy or sell, says Stephen Diamond, a professor of corporate finance and securities regulation at the Santa Clara University School of Law. It’s a real problem for Musk if the tweet is misleading, he says, and could lead to more scrutiny from regulators. It’s an even real-er problem if the tweet can be linked with any sort of trading activity, including stock buybacks. Musk could be accused of insider trading."   https://www.wired.com/story/elon-musk-tesla-stock-too-high-falls/   NEW HONDA CANADA CEO DISMISSES ELECTRIC VEHICLES AS A ‘POLITICAL AGENDA’ "Newly appointed Honda Canada CEO Jean Marc Leclerc is not keen on electric vehicles. In an interview with the Windsor Star, he trots out all the typical anti-EV arguments: too expensive, not practical, money-losing, and no demand." according to electric: "Honda’s Canada chief’s primary arguments against EVs are that they are too expensive, and consumers don’t want them. He cites studies showing that Canadians are willing to pay $700 more to purchase an electric vehicle, but given the necessary investment, “the math doesn’t work.” General Motors this month announced that it will work with Honda to produce two next-generation EVs. Honda will develop the two models with unique interior and exterior designs. The Honda-badged EVs are expected to go on sale in the United States and Canada in the 2024 model year."   https://electrek.co/2020/04/30/new-honda-canada-ceo-dismisses-electric-vehicles-as-a-political-agenda/   BOLLINGER MOTORS UNVEILS CLASS 3 AWD ELECTRIC TRUCK PLATFORM Bollinger Motors announces plans to produce and sell the all-electric B2 Chassis Cab. Episode 116 - The last time Heather Thomas's dad Pat saw his ten year old daughter alive was on the afternoon of October 1, 2000 when she went outside to play around their Cloverdale, BC, townhouse complex. After one the largest searches in RCMP history to that point, it was a hitchhiker who found Heather's body floating facedown in Alouette Lake in Golden Ears Park. Heather had been murdered and the community was shocked when they found out it had been one of their own who had done the terrible deed. Sources and Further Reading: R. v. Episode 115 - On the morning of May 24, 1987, 23-year-old Kenneth Parks walked into a police department covered in blood that was not just his own. Kenneth was disoriented and bleeding profusely from wounds to both his hands which were badly cut. Kenneth said “Oh my God, I just killed someone”; “I've just killed two people”. Kenneth was referring to his in-laws Barbara and Denis Woods of Scarborough. Police found Barbara deceased at the scene and Denis was severely injured, but survived. There was no question Kenneth had done it, but was he responsible? In a precedent setting case his defence team would claim that as Kenneth was sleepwalking when he committed the crime, he should not be held accountable. On today’s show: At some point over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, a portion of the riverbank near Fort Wayne collapsed into the Detroit River.  That riverbank is believed to contain material left over from the Manhattan Project. If you remember, that was the National effort to create the Atomic Bomb during World War 2. And, suffice it to say, that’s not good.  Dave Battagello from the Windsor Star-who broke the story (you can read it here) joins us to talk about it. Also, give him a follow on Twitter.  Plus: New developments in the cast of the slain Detroit Police Officer Rasheen McClain.  Layoffs are coming to workers at the Detroit/Hamtramck GM Plant as it retools for new, electric products.  One more Kid Rock thing.  The Boulevard, the largest residential project in New Center in years has finally opened its doors.  The Wilcox Mill in Plymouth and the Newburgh Mill in Livonia just took a big step toward being redeveloped.  This weekend is the Detroit Urban Craft Fair at the Masonic Temple! For nearly twenty years, a battle has raged over building a new bridge across the Detroit River. The Ambassador Bridge is nearly ninety years old, in questionable shape, wasn’t built for today’s huge trucks and is in a location that, given today’s traffic patterns, doesn’t make much sense. But it is also privately owned. And its owner, 92-year-old billionaire Matty Moroun, has spent millions fighting every attempt to build a new bridge – even though Michigan business interests have been nearly unanimous in saying a new bridge is needed. If something happened to the Ambassador now, the economic consequences would be devastating for both nations, but especially Michigan and Ontario. Well, eight years ago then-Governor Snyder came up with a way to build a new bridge. And after delay after delay, ground has been broken for a new Gordie Howe international bridge, which is now supposed to be finished in 2024. But is that finally a sure thing? Is there any way something could still stop this bridge from being built? Are there jobs available working for it? And – is Matty Moroun going to build a new bridge too? We have a panel of true experts joining us. On the phone, we have Mark Butler, the director of communications for the Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority, the group building the Gordie How bridge. And also Dave Battagello, the reporter for the Windsor Star who has been covering bridge issues for years. In the studio with me is Brian Masse, the member of the Canadian Parliament for the part of Windsor that includes the bridge, and last but by no means least, Gregg Ward, the co-owner of the Detroit-Windsor Truck Ferry, and a man who has always supported a new bridge, even though it may put him out of business.

Ambrose J. Small was a wealthy theater manager who disappeared without a trace on the evening of December 2, 1919 near one of his theaters in Toronto, Ontario. There was no shortage of theories and possibilities as to what happened. Was it the long-suffering wife? The obsessive, clingy mistress? The secretary who had robbed him? Or someone else? When Toronto attorney Charles Vance Millar died in 1926, he left behind a mischievous will that promised a fortune to the woman who gave birth to the most children in the next 10 years. In this week's episode of the Futility Closet podcast we'll follow the Great Stork Derby and the hope and controversy it brought to Toronto's largest families during the Great Depression. We'll also visit some Portuguese bats and puzzle over a suspicious work crew. Intro: The programming language Shakespeare produces code that reads like a stage play. Rose City Politics. 8PM. TONIGHT! Estimate to construct 43 parking spots come in almost $400,000 more than the bogus estimate that was used to sell a false business case to the taxpayers from the people we elected to handle our tax dollars. Mayor says in CBC article today "$507,000 figure was calculated five years ago". If only the voters could fix today mistakes we made years ago. Sadly for the Mayor the "looking out for the taxpayers money" (Elliot, Borrelli, Gignac, Payne, Francis and Sleiman) Councillors will obviously have to vote against this because as Councillor Fred Francis, said in a Windsor Star article from Aug. 5th 2015 when voting down spending $400,000 for large item garbage pick up “I can’t vote for something that I know is eventually going to lead to increased property taxes when it doesn’t solve the problem it’s trying to solve.” Can't wait for those new Library estimates to come rolling in. "Well look at that, it's only $6000 to build a new library", you cant argue the value on that project, sign away. If politicians keep feeding voters bullshit and telling you it's Fruit Loops, and you keep eating it, then they are not the problem, you are.

Today Windsor's Higher Limits vapour lounge was featured in an article for high times, which was then featured in an article in the Windsor Star about that article. How cool is that? It's another episode about Cannabis today, so sit back and enjoy.
