Episode 153 - Dr Livingstone disembarks and Pretorius and Potgieter bury the hatchet

History of South Africa podcast

1840 was a leap year, and in November David Livingstone had left Britain for Africa. His story of exploration and commitment is extraordinary. While he would go on to become better known for his attempts at finding the source of the Nile River in east Africa, it was his formative phase of life at mission stations in southern Africa that we're interested in. Born on 19 March 1813 in Blantyre, Scotland, he was the second of seven children and employed at the age of ten in the towns' cotton mill. This was way before rules about these things, and this ten year-old worked twelve hours days as a piecer, who's job it was to lay broken cotton threads on the spinning machines. He was drawn to the teachings of local evangelist, Thomas Burke. He studied medicine, and then was ordained as a minister of the church at the Charing Cross Medical School. A chance meeting with south African Scots missionary Robert Moffat in London was to change his life. Moffat was running the London Missionary Society's station at Kuruman, and Livingstone asked him if he “would do for Africa” as in survive. “I said he would” Moffat wrote later, “if he would not go to an old station, but would advance to unoccupied ground, specifying the vast plain to the north where I had sometimes seen in the morning sun, the smoke of a thousand villages where no missionary had ever been…” Forgive my pathetic attempt at a Scots accent. Young David Livingstone was going to take that to heart over the next few decades and would become known as the greatest missionary in Africa, even though the truth is he converted only one person to Christianity. He left England for the Cape in November 1840, and spent most of his time on board studying Dutch and seTswana. Joining him on board was someone else we're going to hear quite a bit about in coming episodes, another LMS missionary called William Ross. You know how everything connects one way or another. So we have Livingstone and Ross sailing to southern Africa - imbued with the concepts of evangelical christianity with it's core message Influenced by revivalistic teachings in the United States, Livingstone entirely accepted the proposition put by Charles Finney, Professor of Theology at Oberlin College, Ohio, that "the Holy Spirit is open to all who ask it". For Livingstone, this meant a release from the fear of eternal damnation. And being an earnest young man, he felt that folks should hear about this. Initially he wanted to go to China, but the looming first Opium War led to the London Missionary Society directors deciding southern Africa was safer. Livingstone and Ross landed in Simon's Bay in March 1841 after a stop off in Brazil. Livingstone stayed at Dr Philip's home in Cape Town. Philip spoke quite a bit about how he believed in the policy that all people were equal before God and the law and Livingstone believed that too. Clearly then Livingstone was not going to be welcomed by the Boers and British settlers most of whom by now definitely did not believe this message. Livingstone sailed up the coast to Algoa Bay in May and then he took a two month ox-wagon trek along with William Ross to the Kuruman Mission. There he immersed himself in Tswana life and trekked more than a thousand kilometres to Mabotse in modern day Botswana which is near Zeerust. The Boers in Pietermaritzburg had gone through a combination of good and bad. In 1839 more than half a dozen people had died when a candle tipped over in one of the houses there, burning down 13. The blaze was made worse by the gunpowder stores in most of the houses, and the fire was so intense, it set fire to nearby wagons. Hendrick Potgieter based on the high veld had still not reconciled with Andries Pretorius - but things were about to change.

*These statistics were current at the time of this recording.* Maine Governor Janet Mills has confirmed a devastating shooting incident that left at least 18 people dead and 13 injured in Lewiston. The suspect, identified as Robert Card, is currently at large, and state police have issued a murder warrant for his arrest.    The tragedy unfolded at a bowling alley and restaurant in Lewiston, where Card opened fire, causing chaos and fear among patrons. The shooting occurred around 7 p.m. on Wednesday, prompting a massive response from law enforcement agencies and a shelter-in-place advisory for residents.    Governor Mills expressed her deep condolences to the affected community, stating, "This city did not deserve this terrible assault on its citizens, on its peace of mind, on its sense of security."    Robert Card, a 40-year-old firearms instructor believed to be in the U.S. Army Reserve, has been identified as the primary suspect. Maine State Police Col. William Ross announced that a warrant for Card's arrest has been issued on eight counts of murder, with the possibility of additional charges as the remaining victims are identified.    The suspect's history reveals that Card had been committed to a mental health facility for two weeks in the summer of 2023, although details of his treatment remain undisclosed. Authorities received reports of Card expressing threats to "shoot up" a military base, further emphasizing the seriousness of the situation.    The tragedy unfolded across two locations, with an active shooter reported at Schemengees Bar and Grille and Sparetime Recreation, a nearby bowling alley. Witnesses recounted their terrifying experiences, with one individual describing hearing about 10 shots, initially mistaking them for balloons popping.    Schools across the region took precautions, with some closing as far away as Kennebunk, more than 50 miles from Lewiston. Additionally, Bates and Bowdoin colleges canceled classes, along with the Gorham and Portland campuses of the University of Southern Maine.    The incident has raised concerns about gun laws in Maine, which does not require permits to carry guns and has a strong gun ownership culture tied to hunting and sport shooting traditions. Recent attempts to tighten gun laws, such as background checks for private sales and a 72-hour waiting period for purchases, have faced resistance.    Notable author Stephen King, who lives near the affected area, expressed his sentiments on the issue, saying, "It's the rapid-fire killing machines, people. This is madness in the name of freedom. Stop electing apologists for murder."    The shooting in Lewiston marks the 36th mass killing in the United States this year, according to a database maintained by The Associated Press and USA Today in partnership with Northeastern University. It has left the community reeling and ignited a nationwide conversation about the urgent need for gun control measures.     As the investigation unfolds, law enforcement agencies are working diligently to locate and apprehend Robert Card, while the residents of Lewiston come to terms with the devastating loss they've suffered. This the only time where there is a juxtaposition of both analogue and digital while a generation of petrol heads were both living their best lives and early adopters simultaneously.  The Malaise era might have been the start of the “square bodies and round headlights” movement, but the 1980s… oh the 80s! That was the era of MTV, Killer-Bs, Body Kits and a massive evolution in the automotive industry. Where arguably, some of the iconic cars of our generation were born and carry on through today.   And like all What Should I Buy (WSIB) episodes… we have some shopping criteria. This time, we're going to settle a long standing argument about “Hot Hatches.” What is the actual difference between a shooting brake, liftback, hatchback, wagon and a sports coupe? Today on THE ESSENTIAL SOUNDTRACKS, Erik Woods, Robert Daniels, and Randy Andrews continue their journey through the STAR TREK films and their soundtracks as they discuss the seventh movie in the series, STAR TREK: GENERATIONS. You'll hear them discuss the film in great detail including such topics as the new uniforms, deleted scenes, Kirk's death, the destruction of The Enterprise D and more. Also covered in great length is Dennis McCarthy's underappreciated score. WARNING: We do talk about Star Trek: Picard Season 3 in this episode so if you haven't seen the new series yet, you've been warned;  there are SPOILERS in this episode. STAR TREK: GENERATIONS was released on November 18, 1994. Malcolm McDowell joined cast members from the 1960s television show STAR TREK and the 1987 sequel series STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION. In the film, Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) of the USS Enterprise-D joins forces with Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) to stop the villain Tolian Soran (Malcolm McDowell) from destroying a planetary system in his attempt to return to an extra-dimensional realm known as the Nexus. The film was directed by TV veteran David Carson. The original soundtrack album was released at the time of the film's release on GNP Crescendo Records. In this episode, Dr. William Ross joins our co-hosts in a timely conversation about reparations in St. Louis. In March 2023, the City of St. Louis announced the formation of a nine-member Reparations Commission, naming Dr. Ross as Vice Chair and Kayla Reed as Chair. This announcement stemmed from 50 local organizations unified grassroots advocacy that began in December 2021.  Dr. Ross, the Associate Dean for Diversity of Washington University School of Medicine, and a social justice trailblazer in the field of public health, views the group's charge through a lens of history, justice, and action. Kayla Reed emphasizes the role of truth-telling and the role of repairing the violence, harm, and neglect against Black St. Louisans. This week's Music Minute features the song "Matter of Time" by @Mvstermind. The extraterrestrial comedy podcast where we probe Sergeant Airborne Black Hat Charles L. Moody. Moody allegedly truthfully moved on from Hogwarts or prior to his time at Hogwarts, was a soldier in the army who needed a little me-time. Moody made their way to the desert and what happened next, you'll never be able to guess (unless you've listened to this podcast before). It may or may not have involved a rod. Before you know it, Moody was in the engine room and the science Moody witnessed, does kind of add up. It certainly sounds like Moody may have been experimented upon by some typical grey aliens. But was Moody really visited by aliens in the desert? Or were there other reasons for Moody's missing time? Alongside the main case we also take a brief detour in to the true story of Ham the Astrochimp - the first ape in space (yes, Ham beat humans in to space). As we discussed Mad-Eye Moody we had to include the Harry Potter Hedwig's Theme which was composed by the wonderful John Williams, conducted by Mr Williams along with William Ross and performed by the London Symphony Orchestra. We closed out, as we love to do, with the Hero of Sound Kōji Kondō-composed Staff Roll aka credits theme from 1990-1992's Super Mario World on the Super Nintendo.   Sources:  https://ufoac.com/abduction-of-airborne-sergeant-charles-moody.html   https://www.donkeyjunk.com/post/the-alien-abduction-case-of-air-force-sergeant-charles-l-moody

Let's say you're driving along with your family. You're driving along, you're driving along, all of a sudden there's a Filmshake in the middle of the road! Holy Schneikes, we're talking 1995's Tommy Boy and 1996's Black Sheep! It might've taken us seven years to graduate, we might have eaten paint chips and lived under power lines as kids, but we've got Ph. The extraterrestrial comedy podcast where we probe the good morning Mawnan Owlman. Morning. Has a giant, menacing half-owl half-human been terrorising the wonderful people of Cornwall since 1926, if not earlier? Is there a monstrous owl at all, or is it a gargoyle protecting its church? If it is an owlman, is the owlman a ballerina? This one made national headlines in the UK and a paranormal investigator would be brought in. Some have connected this case to surrealist painters Max Ernst and Leonora Carrington. Regardless of how the Owlman got here, the most important question is can it be stopped aka how can you stop it (from doing… things)? It goes without saying but we're gonna say it - this creature is clearly part of an alien civilisation of owl people whom visit the earth. There's no other way to explain the sightings of owls and strange lights in the sky, in the same area! This legendary tale is the stuff of legends.
