Plans for the extension of St.Flannan's College in Ennis are both on time and within budget, with the building set to be fully handed over in December. The 2,500 square metre extension is the first-of-its-kind in Ireland and is due to be ready for use in time for the new school year. 87% of the building will be constructed away from the school grounds in Ennis, with just the laying of foundations and applying of the roof taking place on site. Director of Healy Partners Architects, who drew up the design, Aran Healy, says the Modern Construction Method makes the on-site construction simple for the contractor.
Transition Year students from St. Flannan's College took on a big challenge, in aid 3 charities last Friday, the 2nd of May. Following last year's successful climb of Croagh Patrick, they took to the mountain once again, to raise funds for Cahercalla Community Care, Milford Hospice, and Cancer Care West. To find out more about the climb, Alan Morrissey was joined in-studio by Transition Year Students, Dylan Lehane & Oscar O'Gara and teacher, Edel Vaughan. The Camogie Association is set to host a Special Congress later this month to address the skorts controversy. Kilkenny and Dublin were given an ultimatum to abandon their Leinster Semi-Final last week unless they changed back into skorts after warming in shorts in protest of Camogie Association Rules. All-Ireland Champions Cork have since committed to wearing shorts for this weekend's Munster Final and are prepared to abandon the game if necessary. The association says it has listened to player feedback and is 'committed to representing the voices of players who wish to have a choice in their playing attire'. The Special Congress will take place on May 22nd, when delegates will consider motions to allow players an option to wear shorts or skorts. To discuss this further, Alan Morrissey was joined by Clare Camogie Player, Clare Hehir and CFM Analyst and St. Flannan's Coach, Ann Marie McGann. Staff and students of an Ennis secondary school are expressing disappointment as plans for a bus shelter appear to have hit a dead end. After engagements with Clare County Council, the National Transport Authority and the Department of Education, there remains no clear funding stream for the much requested piece of infrastructure. Roughly two years ago, the Student Council of St Flannan's College made it known to school management that a bus shelter had been identified as a priority project by the student body which currently numbers 1,280. Those who avail of a school bus service at St Flannan's currently have to wait on the footpath beside the school gates on Cusack Road which although sheltered by trees has no protection from the elements. Leaving Cert student Brendan O'Halloran, who sits on the Student Council, says it deters people from wanting to get the bus. After becoming aware of the problem, the school's principal, Father Ignatius McCormack, wrote to the National Transport Authority to request the installation of a bus shelter. Having been told the matter wasn't within the authority's remit, he then contacted the Department of Education but this effort also proved fruitless as he was informed there's no designated funding stream for such a project. Clare County Council was the next port of call in the school's bid to secure funding and a meeting was held between a school official, an Ennis Municipal District engineer and a Department of Education representative to this end in November 2024. This meeting heard however that the local authority has no responsibility for the provision of a bus shelter at the location as the bus stop isn't publicly used. Father McCormack is remaining hopeful Clare County Council will fund the project. Exploring another avenue, the Student Council recently contacted Clarecastle Fine Gael Councillor Paul Murphy who subsequently raised the matter at a recent meeting of Ennis Municipal District. A response from a Senior Engineer reiterated the view that such a development is the responsibility of either the school itself or the Department of Education. Councillor Murphy believes engaging with the Department to be the most viable way of progressing the project. A recent survey conducted by the Student Council has found that over 300 students at St Flannan's get the bus which accounts for over a quarter of its enrolment. Student Council member Aoibheann O'Dwyer insists if schools want to make travelling bus more appealing, the right infrastructure must be in place.

Teachers' unions are defending their calls to delay the introduction of the Leaving Cert Reform. It comes after the Ombudsman for Children raised concerns over any pause to the roll-out of changes, which includes the introduction of projects for every exam subject. Dr. Niall Muldoon is warning delays could put students in a position to miss out on the best possible opportunities. To learn more about this, Alan Morrissey was joined by Clare ASTI spokesperson and Science teacher at St.Flannan's College in Ennis, John Conneely. Picture (c) Wokandapix from pixabay via Canva.com

An Ennis principal has defended the teaching of religion to pupils in schools, saying he doesn't know "where else they could learn it". It comes as new figures from the Department of Education show that more students now attend multi-denominational post-primary schools than Catholic schools. A total of 206,792 students are enrolled in multi-denominational post-primary schools, making up 48.6% of enrolments, while those attending Catholic schools account for 47.6%. St. Flannan's College now boasts students of 29 different nationalities among its roll call, and its principal, Father Ignatius McCormack, believes school should be a place where information about all religions can be sought.

A Clare Leaving Cert science teacher is warning of major flaws in newly proposed project work that will account for a large chunk of the final grade. As part of Senior Cycle reforms, the Department of Education is aiming to introduce an external examination component that will be worth 40%. The Irish Science Teacher's Association which represents over 1,400 professionals nationwide has distanced itself from the plans citing concerns over potential cheating along with a lack of equitable resources for students of different schools. St. Flannan's Teacher John Conneely believes the plans can work with some revisions.

The manager of St.Flannan's says they know a much improved performance will be needed to make the businesses end of the Dr.Harty Cup. The Ennis side are bidding for their first success in the Munster competition since 2020 and have qualified for this year's quarter-final following a gritty four point win over John the Baptist Community School Hospital yesterday afternoon. Flannan's prevailed on a scoreline of 0-14 to 1-07 at the TUS campus in Moylish on a day when both sides struck nineteen first half wides combined. St Flannan's Boss Jamesie O'Connor says greater efficiency will be needed next time out.
A Clare primary school is set to benefit from a state of-the-art expansion. The Department of Education has granted approval for a new two-storey building equipped with 8 new classrooms at Knockanean, while the existing premises will also be refurbished. While construction is underway, the 297 pupils enrolled will be accommodated on a new 30,000 square foot extension at St.Flannan's College. Ennis Fianna Fáil Councillor Tom O'Callaghan says it marks a new era for the community.
Secondary School teachers across Clare are urging the Minister for Education to address the inherent unfairness of a newly proposed assessment model for leaving cert students. Under the plans, additional components assessment or non-exam work could potentially account for up to 40% of a students grade. In protest of the new system, teachers will sacrifice their lunch breaks today and take to the picket lines outside their respective schools. ASTI Rep and Science and Physics Teacher at St. Flannan's College John Conneely has been telling Clare FM's Daragh Dolan the idea would undermine classroom teaching and widen the gap for students from disadvantaged areas.

Former St. Flannan's College President, Teacher and Guidance Counsellor Fr Joe McMahon will be laid to rest today. There is undoubtedly deep sadness within the community of St Flannan's College, following his passing. Joe was President, teacher and guidance counsellor during his time at St. Flannan's. The Principal of Clare's largest secondary school is hopeful a newly approved expansion will benefit students for generations to come. Work has commenced at St.Flannan's College in Ennis on the construction of six new special needs education classrooms, a new technology room and three science labarotories which it's expected will be completed by next September. The expansion will allow Flannan's to introduce technology as a subject and cater for a growing population of students with Autism Spectrum Disorder. The new building will firstly act as the temporary home of almost 300 students from Knockanean National School, until their newly approved two-storey school building comes on stream. St.Flannan's Principal Fr Ignatius McCormack insists the expansion will future proof the catchment area.
Senior Vatican officials will visit Clare this week for a special event that will see a local cleric promoted to a high profile position. Monsignor Seamus Horgan from Ennis will be consecrated as Papal Nuncio to South Sudan and Titular Archbishop of Árd Sratha in County Tyrone during a ceremony at Ennis Cathedral. The event will take place at 11am on Saturday and the illustrious guest list includes Deputy to Pope Francis, Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin and the Papal Nuncio to Ireland, Archbishop Luis Mariano Montemayor. St.Flannan's College Principal, Fr Ignatius McCormack is looking forward to the landmark occasion.
1900 Scotland saw three responsible, hard working men hand picked for their strength and explempory records as the caretakers of the Flannan Isle lighthouse. It was a very important stop between many ports but definitely between the east coast of the US and Scotland. When a ships captain sounded the horn, flashed a lantern and attempted to locate the caretakers when the lighthouse had gone dark, he found an eerie scene. The story of three lost souls here.
A Clare principal is calling for stronger legislation around the use of vapes which he claims are "completely unregulated" at the moment. It comes as legislation to raise the age at which tobacco products can be legally purchased has been approved. The week leading up to the Dáil summer recess is typically characterised by TDs and senators frantically striving to get legislation over the line. This week is no different as attention has turned to the minimum age at which cigarettes can be legally purchased. Health Minister Stephen Donnelly has received Cabinet approval for the Public Health Tobacco Amendment Bill 2024 which sees the age at which someone can buy tobacco products raised from 18 to 21. Although the smoking rate has dipped significantly over the past twenty years, it's seen a slight increase in recent times as 18% of adults currently smoke. Research shows that those between the ages of 18 and 21 are at the highest risk of becoming a smoker. Principal of St. Flannan's College Father Ignatius McCormack believes the focus must now shift to regulating the use of vapes - the dangers of which he says are yet to be fully understood. The sale of vapes to under 18s has been banned in Ireland since December but there is no proposal at present to extend this ban to the age of 21. New member of the HSE Regional Health Forum West, Ennis Fianna Fáil Councillor Antoinette Baker-Bashua, predicts the public will be grateful in years to come for stronger legislation around of all types of smoking.
Former pupils from St. Flannans College have a momentous occasion edging closer on their calenders. Its the 50th anniversary of those students who sat their leaving cert at the Ennis based school in 1974. The planned reunion is set to take place at St. Flannan's College on Friday night where the former students will take a nostalgic tour through the college re-living some old memories. Member of the organising committee Pat Breen says, it will be very nostalgic for former students to see the changes made to the college over the past 50 years.
A very big occasion is coming up soon for St. Flannan's College, and particularly some of its former pupils. The occasion in question is the 50th anniversary of those students who sat their Leaving Cert at St. Flannan's in 1974. To take a trip down memory lane, and find out details on the planned reunion for those students, Alan Morrissey was joined by members of the organising committee, Pat Breen and Pat Daly. The Pope has nominated a Killaloe Priest as Apostolic Nuncio to South Sudan. Monsignor Séamus Horgan, who will be based in the city of Juba, is also appointed by Pope Francis to the titular See of Árd Sratha - Ardstraw, CoTyrone. A native of Tobarteascáin near St. Flannan's College where he completed his secondary schooling, Monsignor Horgan entered St Patrick's College Maynooth in 1987 before being ordained to the priesthood by Bishop Michael Harty in 1994 at the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul in Ennis. Commenting on the appointment, Bishop of Killaloe Dr. Fintan Monahan said, "I warmly congratulate Monsignor Séamus Horgan on his appointment by Pope Francis to be Nuncio to South Sudan based in the city of Juba. He is also appointed to the titular See of Árd Sratha - Ardstraw, County Tyrone." Bishop Monahan continued, "Monsignor Horgan brings a wealth of pastoral and practical experience with him to his new role. A conscientious, diligent and prayerful pastor, his engagement with people is marked with great kindness and courtesy. He served with distinction in his appointments at local level in Bodyke and Roscrea in the diocese and in his various appointments since he entered the diplomatic service." "I wish Monsignor Horgan every good wish and blessing in his important role and assure him of the prayers of the faithful of Killaloe Diocese,” added Bishop Monahan. “At this time there are three Apostolic Nuncios, originally from Ireland, in active diplomatic service for the Universal Church - and here in Killaloe we are very proud of the fact that two of them are natives of our diocese." St. Flannan's College Principal Fr. Iggy McCormack said, “This episcopal appointment is a tremendous honour for Monsignor Séamus and for our school. We are very proud of what he has achieved in his ministry to date during which time he has served as Secretary of the Apostolic Nunciatures in Kampala, Berne and Manila, as well as working at the Secretariat of State in Rome from 2015 to 2020 before assuming his current role in the United States." "This is the first time in many decades that a Papal Nuncio has emanated from our alumni. The students and staff of St Flannan's College wish Monsignor Séamus the very best for the future," added Fr. McCormack. Following six years of pastoral ministry in the Diocese of Killaloe Diocese, Monsignor Séamus Horgan was sent to Rome 2000 for further studies. After completing a Licence in Canon Law (Pontifical Gregorian University), he joined the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy in Rome to prepare for the service of the Holy See. In 2008 he was appointed a Chaplain of His Holiness and in 2019 a Prelate of Honour. Monsignor Horgan speaks English, Italian & French and has a working knowledge of German.

Contentious HSE plans to construct a €25m community hospital in Ennis have been met with a further delay. An Bord Pleanála was due to make a decision on the 100-bed nursing home on a 2.4 hectare green space at St.Flannan's College in December, but this has been stalled due to a significant backlog in cases. The Board of Management at St.Flannans along with 75 teaching and retired staff lodged objections last January, citing that the development would limit space for the school's rapidly growing population to expand. Clare member of the HSE's Regional Health Forum West, Councillor Rita McInerney says the lack of movement is extremely frustrating.
It's said a light has gone out in County Clare with the death a pioneering music educator. Musicians from this county and beyond have been paying tribute to the legendary Dysart native Frank Custy whose funeral is taking place today. Although it seemed he'd follow a sporting path instead of a musical one early on, Frank Custy is credited as one of the most pivotal figures in the promotion of Irish traditional music in Clare of the last 60 years. Starting life in Dysart, Frank trained as a teacher at St. Patrick's College in Drumcondra and after a stint teaching in Eglish, County Offaly, moved back to Clare where he took up a position at Toonagh National School. It was there that Frank began what would become a key aspect of his legacy; teaching music in the classroom and eventually holding regular evening group classes which all were welcome to attend. Among the illustrious musicians who honed their craft under Frank's tutelage are Sharon Shannon, Siobhan Peoples, Sean Conway, Yvonne Casey and James Cullinan. Former teacher at St. Flannan's College, musician and educator Gary Shannon says Frank's gift was his ability to teach people how to derive enjoyment from playing music. Many cite Frank's "Céad Poirt" booklets, and later accompanying CDs, as their gateway into Irish traditional music. Music aside, he was also a successful hurler in his day, winning the Minor A Championship with Ruan in 1953 at the age of 14, winning the Harty with St. Flannan's and also being part of the Ruan teams which won the county championship in 1959, 1960 and 1962. For his many achievements, he was honoured with a MÓRglór Award in 2016. Clare FM West Wind presenter Joan Hanrahan, who acted as MC on the night of the award ceremony, says his incorporation of music into the classroom schedule was "groundbreaking".
On this week's episode we delve into the story of the missing Flannan Lighthouse lightkeepers that happen in 1900. Three men were simply doing their jobs at the lighthouse and then suddenly disappeared without a trace. What exactly happened to these men? Were they cast out into the sea somehow?
A Clare Secondary School Principal insists that any changes made to the school bus transport scheme must be backed up with the necessary resources. The Department of Education will bring proposals before cabinet today that will aim to reduce the qualification distance. If passed, primary pupils living within 1km and post-primary students living within 2km of their schools would now be eligible for bus transport. Principal of St.Flannan's College in Ennis, Fr Ignatius McCormack has been telling Clare FM's Daragh Dolan that there must be enough drivers and school seat places available to meet any new demand.
The Mayor of Ennis has faced backlash for requesting the removal of a prominent cycle lane on the grounds that it's made the road "too narrow" for drivers. Councillor Pat Daly raised a motion at this month's meeting of local representatives calling on Ennis Municipal District to remove one side of the cycle lane at Clonroadmore between St. Flannan's College and Eire Óg GAA Grounds. The motion was strongly opposed by all but one councillor present and was subsequently withdrawn. Fianna Fáil Councillor Daly has stood form in his position, however, insisting that the bollards and armadillos on the road pose a risk to the safety of drivers who traverse the route.
It's been suggested the removal of an Ennis cycle lane would be a spoke in the wheel for road safety. The Mayor of Ennis was forced to withdraw a motion raised at this month's meeting of the town's local representatives which called from the removal of part of a cycle lane in the vicinity of St. Flannan's College.

The year 2000 was momentous on the sporting field for St. Flannan's College. The Ennis school's senior hurlers won the Harty Cup, which sealed a precious three-in-a-row following Harty Cup success in 1998 and 1999. It was only the third time in the history of the competition that St. Flannan's had achieved a three-in-a-row. After twenty-five years, players across the three panels are coming back together for a special reunion at St. Flannan's College this coming Saturday. Dermot Gleeson, a player in 1998 and captain in 1999; Gerry Quinn, a player in 1998 and 1999; and Tomás Mac Conmara, a player in 1998 and 1999, all joined Alan Morrissey on Friday's Morning Focus.
An Ennis secondary school is planning to boost its staffing and enhance its facilities to cater for its growing student population. St. Flannan's College Ennis is on course to become the largest school in Munster as its enrollment figures are due to increase from 1,201 to 1,280 this September. The increase in numbers will result in the hiring of four additional teachers, the expansion of classroom space, the creation of a full-time astro turf pitch and various other improvements across the school campus. Principal of St. Flannan's Father Ignatius McCormack is hopeful Department of Education funding will assist the school in meeting the needs of its students.
