Three Clare schools are set to benefit from the allocation of new special education classrooms in time for the 2026/27 school year. It follows the announcement by Minister for Special Education, Michael Moynihan that 168 classes have been allocated to 159 schools nationwide.. Ennis National School, St.Flannan's College and Scariff Community College are the beneficiaries, with the classrooms consisting of one teacher and SNA catering for six students. Meelick Fianna Fáil Deputy, Cathal Crowe, is optimistic this allocation is the building block for further classes to be delivered this year.

A newly published Parents of Ireland Survey 2026, which captures the views of nearly 2,000 parents nationwide. The survey highlights growing concerns around access to special educational needs assessments, long waiting times for children's mental health services, pressure on family finances, and attitudes to issues like compulsory Irish and mobile phones in schools. John will give us his perspective from the classroom and from the wider education sector on what these findings mean for schools, parents and policymakers. Image (c) by Syda Productions via Canva

The HSE is facing calls to invest in upgrading or rebuilding St Joseph's Hospital in Ennis. It's after An Coimisúin Pleanála rejected contentious plans for a 100 bed replacement facility to be constructed on a green space at St Flannan's College. The community hospital was due to cost €25m, but the development has been refused due to wastewater capacity issues. Ennis Fianna Fáil Councillor Pat Daly believes the funds should be redirected to the site of the existing community hospital on the Lifford Road.

On December 15th, 1900 three Scottish lighthouse keepers sat down to dinner on the island. Maybe Liam put butter on his bread, maybe he didn't. Maybe Wallace finished his meatloaf, maybe he didn't. Maybe this piggy went to the market and this one went weeee all the way home. We will never know because after this night, all three were never heard from again. Neither their bodies nor any of Wallace's meatloaf were ever recovered despite meat archelogists' (not a thing) best efforts. Today, the Grognostic crew break down Scotland's most sinister and perplexing, unsolved mysteries.

Lighthouses are strange things. By definition and functionality, they are symbols of good, symbols of light. And yet there is something about them that also projects loneliness, isolation, and fear. There is a reason why lighthouses were very rarely entrusted in the hands of one person alone, but sometimes, even with someone there with you, things could still go horribly wrong. And that is exactly what happened off the coast of Scotland one strange December day.Let's dive into the Flannan Isle Lighthouse Mystery.
A Clare centenarian, one of Ireland's oldest men, has passed away. Michael Hannon, late of Main Street, Killaloe died last Sunday at the age of 104. He would have been 105 years-old next February. Michael, who was pre-deceased by his wife Nancy and daughter Geraldine (Purcell), is survived by his daughter Anne, son John, and extended family and friends. Michael will be buried following funeral mass around now (11am, Wednesday) in St. Flannan's Church, Killaloe. To remember Michael and his remarkably long life, Alan Morrissey was joined by Tony O'Brien, Killaloe Fianna Fail Councillor.
Fr. Ignatius McCormack is to retire as Principal of St. Flannan's College. Fr. McCormack's retirement in September will bring an end to a near-quarter of a century long career at one of Ireland's largest schools. The County Offaly native first joined the staff of St. Flannan's in 2001 as a teacher. He later served as Dean of the Boarding School before being appointed Principal in 2017. To discuss this further, Alan Morrissey was joined by Fr. Ignatius McCormack.
In December 1900, three lighthouse keepers vanished without a trace from the remote Flannan Isles, a cluster of windswept rocks off the western coast of Scotland. The relief vessel arrived to find a chilling scene: a meal uneaten, a clock stopped, and no sign of life. What happened to the men of the Flannan Isle Lighthouse? In this episode, we explore the historical facts, the strange details of the discovery, and the enduring theories—from violent storms and rogue waves to madness, murder, and the supernatural. Was it simply a tragic accident, or is there something more haunting at work on Flannan Isle?
Plans for the extension of St.Flannan's College in Ennis are both on time and within budget, with the building set to be fully handed over in December. The 2,500 square metre extension is the first-of-its-kind in Ireland and is due to be ready for use in time for the new school year. 87% of the building will be constructed away from the school grounds in Ennis, with just the laying of foundations and applying of the roof taking place on site. Director of Healy Partners Architects, who drew up the design, Aran Healy, says the Modern Construction Method makes the on-site construction simple for the contractor.
Staff and students of an Ennis secondary school are expressing disappointment as plans for a bus shelter appear to have hit a dead end. After engagements with Clare County Council, the National Transport Authority and the Department of Education, there remains no clear funding stream for the much requested piece of infrastructure. Roughly two years ago, the Student Council of St Flannan's College made it known to school management that a bus shelter had been identified as a priority project by the student body which currently numbers 1,280. Those who avail of a school bus service at St Flannan's currently have to wait on the footpath beside the school gates on Cusack Road which although sheltered by trees has no protection from the elements. Leaving Cert student Brendan O'Halloran, who sits on the Student Council, says it deters people from wanting to get the bus. After becoming aware of the problem, the school's principal, Father Ignatius McCormack, wrote to the National Transport Authority to request the installation of a bus shelter. Having been told the matter wasn't within the authority's remit, he then contacted the Department of Education but this effort also proved fruitless as he was informed there's no designated funding stream for such a project. Clare County Council was the next port of call in the school's bid to secure funding and a meeting was held between a school official, an Ennis Municipal District engineer and a Department of Education representative to this end in November 2024. This meeting heard however that the local authority has no responsibility for the provision of a bus shelter at the location as the bus stop isn't publicly used. Father McCormack is remaining hopeful Clare County Council will fund the project. Exploring another avenue, the Student Council recently contacted Clarecastle Fine Gael Councillor Paul Murphy who subsequently raised the matter at a recent meeting of Ennis Municipal District. A response from a Senior Engineer reiterated the view that such a development is the responsibility of either the school itself or the Department of Education. Councillor Murphy believes engaging with the Department to be the most viable way of progressing the project. A recent survey conducted by the Student Council has found that over 300 students at St Flannan's get the bus which accounts for over a quarter of its enrolment. Student Council member Aoibheann O'Dwyer insists if schools want to make travelling bus more appealing, the right infrastructure must be in place.
The Camogie Association is set to host a Special Congress later this month to address the skorts controversy. Kilkenny and Dublin were given an ultimatum to abandon their Leinster Semi-Final last week unless they changed back into skorts after warming in shorts in protest of Camogie Association Rules. All-Ireland Champions Cork have since committed to wearing shorts for this weekend's Munster Final and are prepared to abandon the game if necessary. The association says it has listened to player feedback and is 'committed to representing the voices of players who wish to have a choice in their playing attire'. The Special Congress will take place on May 22nd, when delegates will consider motions to allow players an option to wear shorts or skorts. To discuss this further, Alan Morrissey was joined by Clare Camogie Player, Clare Hehir and CFM Analyst and St. Flannan's Coach, Ann Marie McGann. Teachers' unions are defending their calls to delay the introduction of the Leaving Cert Reform. It comes after the Ombudsman for Children raised concerns over any pause to the roll-out of changes, which includes the introduction of projects for every exam subject. Dr. Niall Muldoon is warning delays could put students in a position to miss out on the best possible opportunities. To learn more about this, Alan Morrissey was joined by Clare ASTI spokesperson and Science teacher at St.Flannan's College in Ennis, John Conneely. Picture (c) Wokandapix from pixabay via Canva.com

An Ennis principal has defended the teaching of religion to pupils in schools, saying he doesn't know "where else they could learn it". It comes as new figures from the Department of Education show that more students now attend multi-denominational post-primary schools than Catholic schools. A total of 206,792 students are enrolled in multi-denominational post-primary schools, making up 48.6% of enrolments, while those attending Catholic schools account for 47.6%. St. Flannan's College now boasts students of 29 different nationalities among its roll call, and its principal, Father Ignatius McCormack, believes school should be a place where information about all religions can be sought.

A Clare Leaving Cert science teacher is warning of major flaws in newly proposed project work that will account for a large chunk of the final grade. As part of Senior Cycle reforms, the Department of Education is aiming to introduce an external examination component that will be worth 40%. The Irish Science Teacher's Association which represents over 1,400 professionals nationwide has distanced itself from the plans citing concerns over potential cheating along with a lack of equitable resources for students of different schools. St. Flannan's Teacher John Conneely believes the plans can work with some revisions.

Clarecastle tenor Dean Power returns to his alma mater of St. Flannan's College in Ennis this Tuesday, December 17th, at 7 pm to perform Christmas carols in a special candlelit service in the school chapel. Members of the public are invited to the event, which also will commemorate the life and contributions of the late Rev. Fr. The manager of St.Flannan's says they know a much improved performance will be needed to make the businesses end of the Dr.Harty Cup. The Ennis side are bidding for their first success in the Munster competition since 2020 and have qualified for this year's quarter-final following a gritty four point win over John the Baptist Community School Hospital yesterday afternoon. Flannan's prevailed on a scoreline of 0-14 to 1-07 at the TUS campus in Moylish on a day when both sides struck nineteen first half wides combined. A Clare primary school is set to benefit from a state of-the-art expansion. The Department of Education has granted approval for a new two-storey building equipped with 8 new classrooms at Knockanean, while the existing premises will also be refurbished. While construction is underway, the 297 pupils enrolled will be accommodated on a new 30,000 square foot extension at St.Flannan's College. Ennis Fianna Fáil Councillor Tom O'Callaghan says it marks a new era for the community.
Secondary School teachers across Clare are urging the Minister for Education to address the inherent unfairness of a newly proposed assessment model for leaving cert students. Under the plans, additional components assessment or non-exam work could potentially account for up to 40% of a students grade. In protest of the new system, teachers will sacrifice their lunch breaks today and take to the picket lines outside their respective schools. ASTI Rep and Science and Physics Teacher at St. Flannan's College John Conneely has been telling Clare FM's Daragh Dolan the idea would undermine classroom teaching and widen the gap for students from disadvantaged areas.
Former St. Flannan's College President, Teacher and Guidance Counsellor Fr Joe McMahon will be laid to rest today. There is undoubtedly deep sadness within the community of St Flannan's College, following his passing. Joe was President, teacher and guidance counsellor during his time at St. Flannan's. To remember Fr. Joe McMahon, Alan Morrissey was joined by Fr Ignatius McCormack, Principal of St. Flannan's.
An Ennis based bus driver has been in touch with Clare FM claiming that people dropping and collecting students outside Coláiste Mhuire, St. Flannan's, and Rice College are parking on footpaths, obstructing bus lanes, and endangering both students and pedestrians. To discuss this further, Peter O'Connell was joined by Councillor and member of Clare County Council's Road Safety Working Group, Tommy Guilfoyle and Senior Engineer of Clare County Council, Cyril Feeney. The Principal of Clare's largest secondary school is hopeful a newly approved expansion will benefit students for generations to come. Work has commenced at St.Flannan's College in Ennis on the construction of six new special needs education classrooms, a new technology room and three science labarotories which it's expected will be completed by next September. The expansion will allow Flannan's to introduce technology as a subject and cater for a growing population of students with Autism Spectrum Disorder. The new building will firstly act as the temporary home of almost 300 students from Knockanean National School, until their newly approved two-storey school building comes on stream. St.Flannan's Principal Fr Ignatius McCormack insists the expansion will future proof the catchment area.
1900 Scotland saw three responsible, hard working men hand picked for their strength and explempory records as the caretakers of the Flannan Isle lighthouse. It was a very important stop between many ports but definitely between the east coast of the US and Scotland. When a ships captain sounded the horn, flashed a lantern and attempted to locate the caretakers when the lighthouse had gone dark, he found an eerie scene. The story of three lost souls here.
On this week's episode we delve into the story of the missing Flannan Lighthouse lightkeepers that happen in 1900. Three men were simply doing their jobs at the lighthouse and then suddenly disappeared without a trace. What exactly happened to these men? Were they cast out into the sea somehow?
Grab a beer and join us tonight as we discuss the Flannan Isle Lighthouse Mystery! We'll get into the history of the Flannan Isles, and the construction of the lighthouse. Then we'll discuss the disappearances of the three lighthouse keepers, and give our thoughts. https://www.necronomipod.com https://www.patreon.com/necronomipod Sponsored by BetterHelp: https://www.betterhelp.com/necro Learn more about your ad choices.
