As we roll into April, it just felt like time for fat, rolling, funky breakbeat goodness.......... I have always been into my breaks from the minute as a teenager that I first heard those big juicy beats, kick drums and rolling basslines, I was hooked. My first taste came during my early trips to Brighton when me and the Bucks Boys used to party at the beach club where a certain Fat Boy Slim ran his "Big Beat Boutique" promotion. That early big beat was just perfection to me and I followed the genre ever since and Plump DJs and Stanton Warriors debut albums both released at a similar time (A Plump Night out and The Stanton Sessions) became legendary CDs that I owned and rinsed time and time again. Later in the mid 2000s at our JamBasha parties we always had a breaks and D&B room where we hosted headliners such as Drumattic Twins from Fingerlickin Records. Breaks have stayed with me ever since and it's interesting to see how the genre has developed after slowing down for a while. I have picked 30 tunes which technically span genres including glitch hop (new to me!),  tech funk, dubstep and breaks. If you were to categorise the breaksbeats on this mix , they would be split into tech breaks, some garagey sounding breaks i guess evolved from the newer garagey deep house sound that has been prevalent recently, some progressive breaks (I love my melodic uplifting sounds) and some old skool house piano jams with the classic breakbeat #piratejams. The way I have blended the mix is so that I take you on a journey through the different breakbeat sounds, evolving as you get through the mix from 100bpm glitch hop to 138bpm full on pumping breaks. Go with it, you need to listen to the full journey to understand it. It is a pleasure to say that I have included 5 tunes from JamBasha's own Chevy One who has worked so hard for so long and as usual hard work has paid off. Chevy has moved his way up the scene and as is now a leading producer of tech funk originally working out of the Lot49 stable with Dylan Ryhmes and Meat Katie he is now producing and remixing tunes with lots of other famous producers as well. Check Chevy out!  Now download the mix but remember this is not background music, turn it on preferably in a quality sound system with a beefer subwoofer, turn it UP, turn it up again, relax and enjoy the big beat journey! For this our twenty second episode, we're pleased to welcome label boss at Ground Level Records, Andy McAllister, to The Armory Podcast. Press play. Get Down. Starting off in the music industry as a drummer in his teens, Andy was playing regularly in his native Scotland, when he got interested in electronic dance music and production. After a few years of crude production, he widened his skills to encompass DJing, coming of age just as the Big Beat explosion was hitting down, and began playing regularly in his adopted home of Derby. As the years went on and Big Beat became Nu Skool Breaks, Andy kept his finger on the pulse running nights in and around Derby and regularly getting guest DJs from around the country to play at his ‘Ground Level' nights. At the end of 2006, the steady flow of tracks being given to him by guest DJs gave him an idea, to provide an outlet for this music, and so Ground Level Records was born. Not knowing anything about running a record label, everything was a process of trial and error, the only motto was that no corners where cut, the vinyl records would be cut by the best guys, the remixes by the hottest talent and the artwork accompanying the release would be fresh and innovative, making sure a product came out that oozed quality. This seemed to do the trick, and by January 2008, 10 releases in, Ground Level was nominated as best Breakthrough label at the International Breakbeat Awards, Breakspoll. Now with over 70 releases in the catalogue Ground Level is preparing to celebrate it's 7th Birthday this July.  Artists on the label include DJ Hero, Fisso & Spark, Beatsmack and Rebel Sketchy and the label's music has attracted listens and spins from DJs outside of the breaks scene from Laurent Garnier to MJ Cole!  The music policy of Ground Level is music with a broken beat and an underground feel, and this manifesto has carved the label a following that far exceeds the niche of breakbeat. Andy hosts the monthly Ground Level Podcast on iTunes, as well as playing at Ground Level nights up and down the country, and has played with many of the big players in the breaks and bass music scenes including Plump DJs, Stanton Warriors, Drumattic Twins, Foamo, Jack Beats and Calvertron. I have always loved my Breaks and in the early days Big Beat. I remember the trips to the beach club in Brighton for Fat Boy Slim's Big Beat Boutique. A Plump Night Out and The Stanton Session were two albums I bought and how the Plumps and Stantons moved onwards and upwards from there.... Other artists that have inspired me in this genre are Rogue Element, Krafty Cuts, A-Skillz, Vandal, General MIDI, Dan Magnan and the Drumattic Twins who rocked one of our best ever Jambasha parties. This won't be to everyone's taste but for those that like it fat and a bit tougher enjoy!

Tune-in this show as I put the hammer down on a 60 minute set of serious breaks. Hold on tight as I throw down great tracks from DJ Icey, Drumattic Twins, Plump DJs, and Tim Healey, just to name a few. I'm kicking this hour off with an Aeron Aether breaks remix by Reelaux.
