The noise keeps coming this week with one of our good homies, all-around chiller and gifted producer, Devault. He's currently been releasing some of his most inspired music to date, working with the likes of Zhu, DJ Snake, and RL Grime to boot. We break the ice with Devault by recounting his world-changing entry into the scene with Holy Ship!, how his brother's controller and the game DJ Hero created his love for electronic music, the process of convincing his parents that music was his career calling, the influence of DJ AM, going back to his musical roots to create his best music yet, the art of turning a live show into a transformative theatrical experience, getting some sauce from guys like Zhu & Snake, plus, how he played college lacrosse at Arizona State. Why Activision is handling Call of Duty differently this year, if DJ Hero was the real deal, and what the hell is a Tricaster?
Kick, punch, it's all in the mind! Well, I mean... that's ONE example of this genre, but this time instead of Um Jammer Lammy, we're focused in on the behemoths of the rhythm game genre from about 2005 to 2015... Guitar Hero, Rock Band, DJ Hero, and all those rock 'n' roll, guitar 'n' drum, rhythm-music games! These games were the life of the party for a good chunk of years, and as it turns out, might still be fun to play today! Our hosts and ONE producer may be musically inclined, but it turns out these games aren't always about how good your ear is... much to Producer Kyle's relief! From Weezer to Grandmaster Flash, Mighty Mighty Bosstones to Babymetal, these games are a great catalogue of popular rock music of the late 90s to mid-2010s, and if you can find your way into getting the instruments... are they worth pulling back out and jamming out? Only one way to find out...A-five-six-seven-DOWNLOAD THE EPISODE AND LISTEN TO IT!

Nothing's better than when you don't know that a game exists, and then POOF! It's just right there on the homepage of whatever digital games distributor you use to get new games. Even better? Few DJs have had as big an impact on music and culture as Zach Sciacca, nor do they work as hard. Whether in the studio, behind the decks, or behind the scenes, he is always pushing the boundaries and honing his craft. Better known as DJ Z-Trip, Zach is a genre-bending Los Angeles musician, the recipient of the 2009 America's Best DJ Award, and a pioneer of the mashup movement. As a producer, he has worked with incredible artists across genres, including the likes of LL Cool J, Public Enemy, Kasabian, and Dan the Automator. His love for all styles of music and how they can work together is groundbreaking and inspiring, and his innate funkiness and technical ability have led him to compose scores for video games like EA Skate, create mashups for Activision's DJ Hero, and score music for films such as Infamy, La Bare, and Bob Marley: Legend Remixed. In today's conversation, Zach shares some major pearls of wisdom about the importance of pushing the boundaries whenever you have the chance and investing your energy in constant evolution, not what sells or attracts the most followers. We also touch on how the pandemic helped him reconnect with his ‘why' and why he believes that true success is about the aggregate, not the benchmarks. Zach has a work ethic to be admired, as well as a deep love for music, an approachable demeanor, and a relentlessly positive attitude, and listeners will benefit greatly from hearing his story today. We hope you'll join us! Key Points From This Episode: How the contrasting worlds of New York and Arizona influenced Zach's taste in music. The story of how his collection of 12-inch singles led Zach to become a DJ. Some favorite examples of tracks that blend genres, like Afrika Bambaataa's ‘Planet Rock'. The boundary-pushing sampling and discovery that drew Zach to hip hop. Insight into Zach's process of producing his own music, which started with pause tapes. The ‘Rockstar' track on Return of the DJ that caught the attention of Zach's peers. Why he believes that the mashup requires a certain level of open-mindedness. The value of working with those on the same trajectory as you, rather than more established artists, and building the right team. Key lessons from Zach's career: be risky, push boundaries, and don't always play it safe! The work ethic and commitment to improvement that Zach demonstrates every day. What the pandemic taught him about reconnecting with his ‘why'. How live streaming and virtual raves influenced his practice and his mindset. Zach shares his belief in staying true to himself and allowing the universe to provide. Why he believes that success is about the aggregate, not about hitting benchmarks. His advice for DJs: play every gig like it's your first and your last! He cautions musicians against getting caught up in the numbers, likes, and followers. Part of creating The Max Frequency Podcast was to restore all the episodes of Behind the Pixel, an interview show I did in 2017 for seven episodes. These will be mixed into this feed so that the show can live on podcast services once more. Below are the original show notes, with some light editing. I hope you enjoy. The worlds of hip-hop and video collide, not in the world of DJ Hero, but in the artistic stylings of Roger Pokorny. Through his spunky video essays, Roger takes the energy and vibrancy of hip-hop to talk about pop culture and games. From unique perspectives such as the state of rebooting franchises to the insanity of defending Arkham Origins, Roger's infectous spirit and style rubs off on all his viewers. Dope Facts about Roger Pokorny He is the only* other person who understands why we need a new Splinter Cell game. His Tinder profile was edited by Greg Miller. He is a self-taught editor.
