Recorded on the 11th of March 2025.A quick rip through some Big Beat and Breakbeat faves. My internet connection was being sketchy as ever so this is a short one.Enjoy!
In our second installment of Surviving the 90s, we're revisiting one of the hitmakers from the first half of the 80s - Billy Squier. Responsible for such hits as The Stroke, Lonely Is The Night, Everybody Wants You, My Kinda Lover, and Rock Me Tonite, to name a few, Squier was all over radio and early MTV. Albums like Don't Say No, Emotions in Motion, and Signs of Life each went Platinum, and while musical trends changed, Squier still managed radio airplay into the early 90s. But by 1998, he was done, releasing his final record, Happy Blue, an all acoustic affair. We revisit his greatest hits, his 90s releases, and try to determine if Billy Squier thrived, adapted, or died in the 90s. Songs In This Episode Intro - The Stroke (from Don't Say No) 10:32 - 42nd Street by Piper (from self-titled) 17:41 - The Big Beat (from The Tale of the Tape) 28:19 - Rock Me Tonite (from Signs of Life) 38:28 - Young at Heart (from Creatures of Habit) 1:02:42 - Happy Blues (from Happy Blue) Outro - Angry (from Tell The Truth) Support the podcast, join the DMO UNION at Patreon. Carl Quintanilla and Jim Cramer kicked off the show live from the NYSE, with co-anchor David Faber joining live from the FII Priority Summit in Miami. The anchors hit the morning's biggest earnings movers starting with Walmart. The major retailer topped earnings and revenue estimates for its fiscal fourth quarter, but said its profit growth will slow in the current fiscal year. Another big name to watch was Alibaba, after shares of the company surged on strong results, with the stock now up 60% year-to-date. Later in the hour, Faber brought in OpenAI CFO Sarah Friar, in her first interview since Elon Musk made an $97.4 billion unsolicited bid for OpenAI.Squawk on the Street Disclaimer
Still high off the fumes of January's first Big Beat Cinema episode, we return to the scene of the crime this week for a follow-up film special with Finn, Manchester's very own pope of trash. In this episode, we start by diving into your feedback, ranging from literary theory to eyewitness accounts from big beat OGs. We expand the official BBC canon with even more movies, including Go, Twin Town and The Bourne Identity. We then go deeper, asking what Big Beat Cinema tells us about life in the ‘90s and '00s, how class fantasies and lad's mags shaped the subgenre, and whether that UK government anti-piracy ad is a forgotten classic of the movement. Finally, we try to locate the last gasp of BBC and explain why Moby and Fatboy Slim fell out of favour with Hollywood. If you're enjoying No Tags, please do rate, review and subscribe on your podcast app of choice. “Rock 'n roll is really swing with a modern name,” Freed once said. “It began on the levees and plantations, took in folk songs, and features blues and rhythm. It's the rhythm that gets to the kids – they're starved of music they can dance to, after all those years of crooners.”HISTORICAL ALAN FREED MOMENTS:Freed moved to WINS in New York in 1954 where his late night radio show became known as Alan Freed's Rock 'n' Roll Party. His popularity was immediate and so was the criticism. In July 1957, Freed was given his own nationally televisedrock 'n roll dance show billed as “The Big Beat" on ABC-TV. The show featured a mix of pop and R&B acts. Early reviews for the national show were good, but it was cancelled abruptly after Frankie Lymon, one of the show's black performers, was shown on air dancing with a white girl. The biracial dance scene enraged ABC's Southern affiliates and the network cancelled the show despite its growing popularity.Freed was featured in five of the earliest rock 'n' roll movies – Rock Around the Clock and Rock, Rock, Rock in 1956; Mister Rock And Roll and Don't Knock the Rock in 1957 and Go Johnny Go in 1958.Freed was initially interred in New York, the city where he died at 43 in 1965. His family moved his remains to Cleveland years later and then to the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame Museum 12 years ago, his son Lance Freed said.“I thought this was the last move, but then I got this call to move him,” Freed said. “He said, ‘You've got to come pick him up.' ““The museum world is moving away from exhibiting remains” since ashes don't help tell a story, he was told.Bullshit. The Hall's Board simply felt human remains did not belong where they could depress those paying for admission.Alan Freed Urned His Right To Remain In The Home That Utilized His Rock and Roll Signature As It's Way Of Earning Millions Upon Millions Of Dollars.PLEASE VISIT THE ALAN FREED ARCHIVES AT:https://www.alanfreed.com/wp/archives/

This week we kick off the first ever No Tags film season! Based on an original idea by DJ and NTS host Finn, Big Beat Cinema is our attempt to identify and decode a much-loved and entirely made-up micro-genre.We begin by outlining the core canon and basic tropes of BBC, paying particular attention to the ultra-stylish heist movies of the late ‘90s and early ‘00s – think Ocean's Eleven, Mark Wahlberg's The Italian Job, Snatch and even The Matrix. We also try to explain why big beat – the sample-flipping, chart-dominating, Hawaiian shirt-wearing sound of the millennium – became so integral to these movies' portrayal of cool guys pulling off implausible heists. From zany editing to Junkie XL, from Paul Oakenfold to the politics of cool, and from Skint Records to the correct shade of denim, this first episode lays out the core principles of BBC.Let us know what you think in the comments – including on our Letterboxd list, where you can check out the full selection of BBC contenders, from Shallow Grave to Kneecap. Carl Quintanilla, Jim Cramer and David Faber started the show by breaking down the quarterly results out of Morgan Stanley. Shares of the big bank soared to new record highs, after topping estimates on better-than-expected wealth management, trading and banking results. A similar picture for United Airlines after the company posted an earnings beat and announced it will buy back $1.5 billion worth of shares, which gave the stock a boost. The desk also hit Amazon, the latest tech company to join the nuclear energy craze. Amazon Web Services announced that it is investing over $500 million in nuclear power, including three projects from Virginia to Washington State. After the opening bells, the anchors also hit the weak results out of LVMH, which suffered slumping sales in China. Squawk on the Street Disclaimer

Our economist says the consumer is on the cusp of a significant slowdown, and that could mean big changes for the Fed's rate cut timeline. Plus, La-Z-Boy shares are soaring to their highest level since 2021 and best day in 7 years. We'll ask the CEO what's driving demand. And Lennar is lower despite an earnings beat, but our analyst says that presents a big buying opportunity.

Another one of those episodes where Matt pretends to know anything about electronic music. Some fun ones here though, all classics of that late-90s shooting star genre Big Beat, which is blessedly straightforward in name. Chemical Brothers make it on the Spin list with Dig Your Own Hole, and Matt talks Fatboy Slim's You've Come a Long Way, Baby and Propellerheads' Decksanddrumsandrockandroll as progenitors and exemplum of the Big Beat sound and era.

At 10:45 AM central time on the morning of September 11th, 1957, Howard Miller signed on from WBBM with fifteen minutes of music, and an interview with Steve Allen. Howard Miller was born on December 7th, 1912 in Chicago. From 1945 through 1949 he was WIND's program director before beginning an eighteen year run as the Windy City's top-rated morning DJ. In between he acted in Jamboree!, Senior Prom, and The Big Beat. In September of 1957 Steve Allen was coming off starring in The Benny Goodman Story. He left The Tonight Show in January after three successful years when NBC asked Allen to focus on his Sunday prime time Steve Allen Show. By then Allen was famous as a humorist, musician, emcee, and actor. He was promoting his new song, “Gotta Have Something in the Bank, Frank” when he spoke to Miller.

De Australía tenemos a The Presets, combinando New Wave, SynthPop, Disco y Pop. Aquí escuchamos el temazo “This Boys's in Love” publicado en 2008. It's the episode you've all been waiting for! Our chat with super star DJ Norman Cook AKA Fatboy Slim. We were privileged to be invited back stage before his gig in Brisbane to have a quick chat with Norman about life since going sober 14 years ago. We reminisce about The Big Beat Boutique, find out why bringing Fatboy Slim home after a gig triggered him to seek help and how it feels entertaining a massive crowd since giving up booze. We are so excited to share this with our Sober Awkward fans. Norman is a huge inspiration and proves that you can still party at nearly 60....without being wasted. A huge thanks to Al, Norman and Andy Mac for making this happen. It really was a wonderful night that we will never forget! Now, enough waffle, let's get on with it! Enjoy the show! We're deep into the 1990s at Hall of Songs, and in this episode, Tim and Chris select their top-12 from 1997!You should expect equal doses of rap, dance-pop, and rock, with dashes of country-crossover, R&B, and whatever the hell was happening over in Britain.
