He started dj’ing in 1996 and his first love of music started in the late 70’s when his parents would have disco parties. It then transcended to blues, pop, hip hop, rock, and everything in between. “I just love music.” His dj career started out in the rave scene When there was a lull of raves in the northwest. He moved into the club scene and started playing hip hop and top 40. Throwing in a couple of wedding gigs here and there, exploring all of those different avenues and his love of all music can be heard throughout his sets. “I love all music but in my heart of hearts, my true love is electronic music. The Tampa takeover of The Armory Podcast continues this week with breakbeat sensation, DJ Hero, on the 1s and 2s. Press play. Get down. After taking the name DJ Hero in 1996, Hero began his career as a DJ, playing everything from house, to breaks, to trance, and just about everything in between. After a few years of figuring out what was his sound, DJ Hero focused on breaks. After playing up and down the east coast, holding residencies in Florida, Georgia, Michigan, Tennessee, and playing countless gigs around the greater south east, Hero decided it was time to change his focus to producing his own music. In 2000, DJ Hero started Solitude Studios, locked himself behind closed doors, studied, read, and practiced, producing whatever came to his mind. After several years of teaching himself the ins and outs of engineering, Hero hooked up with Huda Hudia, founder of Kaleidoscope Music, where he engineered and produced many releases to come from Kaleidoscope Music. In 2008, DJ Hero moved from Atlanta, Georgia to Denver, Colorado where he hooked up with DJ Vanish, and began Velcro City Records, and expanded the services of Solitude Studios to artist development, audio engineering, sound design, and mixing and mastering. For this our twenty second episode, we're pleased to welcome label boss at Ground Level Records, Andy McAllister, to The Armory Podcast. Press play. Get Down. Starting off in the music industry as a drummer in his teens, Andy was playing regularly in his native Scotland, when he got interested in electronic dance music and production. After a few years of crude production, he widened his skills to encompass DJing, coming of age just as the Big Beat explosion was hitting down, and began playing regularly in his adopted home of Derby. As the years went on and Big Beat became Nu Skool Breaks, Andy kept his finger on the pulse running nights in and around Derby and regularly getting guest DJs from around the country to play at his ‘Ground Level' nights. At the end of 2006, the steady flow of tracks being given to him by guest DJs gave him an idea, to provide an outlet for this music, and so Ground Level Records was born. Not knowing anything about running a record label, everything was a process of trial and error, the only motto was that no corners where cut, the vinyl records would be cut by the best guys, the remixes by the hottest talent and the artwork accompanying the release would be fresh and innovative, making sure a product came out that oozed quality. This seemed to do the trick, and by January 2008, 10 releases in, Ground Level was nominated as best Breakthrough label at the International Breakbeat Awards, Breakspoll. Now with over 70 releases in the catalogue Ground Level is preparing to celebrate it's 7th Birthday this July. Artists on the label include DJ Hero, Fisso & Spark, Beatsmack and Rebel Sketchy and the label's music has attracted listens and spins from DJs outside of the breaks scene from Laurent Garnier to MJ Cole! The music policy of Ground Level is music with a broken beat and an underground feel, and this manifesto has carved the label a following that far exceeds the niche of breakbeat. Andy hosts the monthly Ground Level Podcast on iTunes, as well as playing at Ground Level nights up and down the country, and has played with many of the big players in the breaks and bass music scenes including Plump DJs, Stanton Warriors, Drumattic Twins, Foamo, Jack Beats and Calvertron. This week in The Armory we are absolutely thrilled to be featuring two of America's finest purveyors of the broken beat, Chicago's Keith MacKenzie and Orlando's DJ Fixx. Although the primary focus has been bass-driven breaks music, the label built a reputation for releasing quality collaborations from artists working across electronic genres, quickly making it a Beatport favorite. Besides his own productions with DJ Fixx (as KMFX), the ever-growing list of releases have included music from producers like Calvertron, Deekline & Ed Solo, Hatiras, Bass Kleph and Gigi Barocco, as well as frequent vocal contributions by the likes of Sporty-O, Sue Cho and Whiskey Pete. In addition to gigging extensively in North America, the last few years have seen Keith's profile boosted to international breakbeat fame. Over the last year alone, Keith has smashed dancefloors in Spain, Russia, Rome, and London, constantly pushing his potent formula of party-rocking breaks to new heights. Over the past 15 years, breakbeat pioneer DJ Fixx has been stocking the shelves of record stores everywhere. Said by many as one of the most innovative and consistent producers in the industry, he continues to deliver some of the most sought after breakbeat tracks available. Making his debut in 1998, Fixx produced over 75 anthems on the classic Kaleidoscope Music label. Many of these timeless tracks are still played frequently today. This was then followed by Fixx's own personal imprint, Bottom-End Records (2004-2008). Managed by Afterdark, the BER trademark produced some of the biggest anthems in the industry, easily claiming the spot of one of the top five best-selling domestic labels in the country. Alongside of Keith MacKenzie, Fixx is currently a leading producer for Keith's illeven:eleven label. "Ghost Ship Apocalypse was an experience I'll never forget. I've been lucky enough to play the last three years and the party keeps getting better. The production value and art were insane. I've got to give a shout out to my family in the Janky Barge for putting a fantastic room together yet again. I've always prided myself on being a shapeshifter, tailoring my sets to the party and the crowd, so when I found out I was playing on the Space Cowboys' Unimog, I thought I'd bring a little more of an old school breakbeat flavor to my set than one might usually find. It was especially fun to dig in the crates for classics like the Beat Assassins' remix of "Repeated Groove" and the Rogue Element's take on The Prodigy's "Girls." Those tunes, and some personal edits of "Rhythm Is a Dancer" and 2 Bad Mice's "Bombscare" really prove that dance music doesn't just have to be about the newest of the new." - Ground Control Jason Apple, aka Ground Control, is a San Francisco based bass music producer and DJ. His productions draw heavily from bassline and early rave music, with stops on the way at dubstep, funky, and electro, and breakbeat. Ground Control's debut record, "Be Nice," was released on En:Vision Records in June 2008. He has since released music on such labels as Play Me Recordings, Hot N Heavy, 9G Records, and Sleevin Records. His ongoing collaborations with San Francisco DJ/producer DJ ICON have been featured on illeven: eleven Records, Rat Recordings, and Vibrance Recordings. He recently started a side project, Shouts!, for his more melodic, housier output, while still keeping an eye firmly on the dancefloor. Simon Shackleton's Elite Force project began way back in 1996, debuting on his own newly founded Fused and Bruised label with a series of peerless 12s and remixes. After a successful five years, he put Fused and Bruised on the backburner to concentrate on production work, and following several years with Whole9Yards and Moonshine he became a mainstay recording artist for AdriftRecordings (formally known as Kingsize Records) before moving on to set up hisown hugely successful U&A imprint. Often credited for being a lynchpin in the developing the tech-funk genre (an amalgamation of breaks, house, techno and electro) he has released a series of highly successful singles in the past few years, finding broad support from DJs and musicians across the board, including the likes of James Zabiela, Sasha, Crystal Method, Laurent Garnier and Fatboy Slim to name but five. In 2008 released a semi-retrospective double album's worth of remixes and re-workings of a 12-year back catalogue, with over 25 mixes coming from such luminaries as Miles Dyson, Rogue Element, Deepgroove, Dylan Rhymes & Calvertron. In addition to these solo singles, Meat Katie has been a regular collaborator with Elite Force, a relationship that had begun in 2003 with the massive-selling 'Toba', and that will see their creative relationship come to fruition in 2009 with the launch of their new joint project under the name ‘Dustbowl', as well as a series of singles under the ‘Meat Katie & Elite Force' banner. As a remixer, Elite Force has always been in huge demand, with re-workings for the likes of Grandmaster Flash, Crystal Method, Jungle Brothers, Stereo MCs, UNKLE, Infusion, Rennie Pilgrem, Shiloh and Dylan Rhymes all contributing to his reputation as one of the most creative and effective remixers around. Elite Force's music has also been the soundtrack to many a movie, with a huge list of impressive A-list credits to his name, including the likes of the Matrix, Charlie's Angels, Arlington Road, Mortal Kombat, Crow, The Bone Collector, The Jackyll, Spiderman 2 and his music has appeared on a wide array of TV shows, from CSI to Top Gear, from Football Focus to LA Doctors. He's also soundtracked a number of computer games, including no fewer than 5 FIFA games, several of the Wipeout series, The Matrix and Motorstorm 1, and he is currently writing some bespoke music for forthcoming games for Ferrari and Motorstorm2. On the decks, Elite Force has been a prime mover since 1990 when he cut his teeth playing huge student nights and self-promoted acid house nights in the South West of England, before moving up to ....London.... and ultimately gravitating towards his tech-funk style, with which he now has a full diary of global bookings. He has become known as one of the top technicians on a circuit that has included massive shows in Belarus, Hungary, Australia, Italy, USA, Czech Republic, India, Turkey, Spain, Japan, Georgia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, and China, amongst others, as well as numerous festival slots including Glastonbury, Coachella, Bloom, Wickerman, the Glade and more recently Burning Man. He was also responsible for the hugely influential Strongarm Sessions webcasts which became something of an institution since their inception back in 2001, receiving as they did around 20,000 downloads per show, but now put on the backburner to concentrate on other projects, such as his own blog (Techfunkmanifesto) and his other musical projects, such as Dustbowl (with Meat Katie).
