It's the Roland Garros 2025 2nd Round Show... In Thursday's action, Henrique Rocha and Alexander Bublik each pulled off upset wins from down 2-0, against Jakub Mensik and Alex De Minaur Respectively. Joao Fonseca was dominant against Pierre Hughes-Herbert to set up a meeting with Jack Draper, who fended off a fluctuating Gael Monfils. Blisters are the only concern for Novak Djokovic who's tennis was rather blistering against Corentin Moutet. In Wednesday matches, Casper Ruud was effected by injury in a loss to Nuno Borges, Carlos Alcaraz dazzled against Fabian Marozsan, Tommy Paul was tough as his truck in comeback against Marton Fucsovics, Holger Rune put in a disciplined performance against Emilio Nava, and Stefanos Tsitsipas continued his slide with an upset defeat against Mateo Gigante. 0:00 Intro 0:50 Rocha def Mensik 5:05 Bublik def De Minaur 14:20 Fils def Munar 24:00 Fonseca def Herbert 28:00 Draper def Monfils 33:50 Djokovic def Moutet 45:00 Borges def Ruud 48:25 Alcaraz def Marozsan 51:25 Paul def Fucsovics 54:50 Rune def Nava 58:28 Gigante def Tsitsipas Joao Fonseca and Jack Draper are set for a 3rd round blockbuster. Del 2 kommer i morgen, torsdag 15. mai.God lytting! Penko Power returns! It's been a week for upsets on the ATP and WTA Tours this week as Jelena Ostapenko and Holger Rune were the big winners in Stuttgart and Barcelona. The Latvian gave us a reminder of all her talents with wins over Sabalenka and Swiatek whilst Rune put Carlos Alcaraz to the sword and returns to the Top 10. Alexander Zverev also rediscovered form in Munich despite hecklers from the crowds over ongoing domestic abuse allegations whilst Elina Svitolina won out in Rouen. It wasn't just all about the champions though this week, as Harrriet Dart was in the news for telling her opponent she needed some deodorant (bizarre!), there were wild celebrations from new kid on the ATP block Dedura-Palomero over a retirement win against Shapovalov and the coaching circus continues with Maria Sakkari getting back together with former coach Tom Hill.Off the court, Serena Williams had her say on the Jannik Sinner ban and brought Maria Sharapova into the debate whilst the French Open organisers announced there would be a special ceremony for Rafael Nadal at this year's Roland Garros. The gang also preview the upcoming Madrid Masters as we go back to the two week format (eurgh!) and give their champion predictions.Roland-Garros Hospitality with Sports, Travel and Hospitality GroupTo guarantee the best seats in the house with ticket-inclusive official hospitality, visit https://bit.ly/4j6RYBzSOCIALSFollow us on Twitter, Instagram, TikTok and YouTube, plus email the show tennisweeklypod@gmail.com.MERCHPurchase Tennis Weekly Merch through our Etsy store including limited edition designs by Krippa Design where all proceeds go towards the podcast so we can keep doing what we do!REVIEWS***Please take a moment to rate and review the show on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or wherever you get your pods. Many of us are familiar with the ancient Egyptians' obsession with immortality and the great efforts they made to secure the quality of their afterlife. But, as Dr. Rune Nyord shows in Yearning for Immortality: The European Invention of the Ancient Egyptian Afterlife (University of Chicago Press, 2025), even today, our understanding of the Egyptian afterlife has been formulated to a striking extent in Christian terms. Dr. Nyord argues that this is no accident, but rather the result of a long history of Europeans systematically retelling the religion of ancient Egypt to fit the framework of Christianity. The idea of ancient Egyptians believing in postmortem judgment with rewards and punishments in the afterlife was developed during the early modern period through biased interpretations that were construed without any detailed knowledge of ancient Egyptian religion, hieroglyphs, and sources. As a growing number of Egyptian images and texts became available through the nineteenth century, these materials tended to be incorporated into existing narratives rather than being used to question them. Against this historical background, Dr. Nyord argues that we need to return to the indigenous sources and shake off the Christian expectations that continue to shape scholarly and popular thinking about the ancient Egyptian afterlife. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose new book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars.
