It had to happen eventually, and with two of the American voice actors coming to the convention we're affiliated, now was the best time to look at the original animated adaptation of Akira Toriyama's inescapable action franchise. Specifically we dive into the first two episodes, establishing the unusual start of the friendship between Goku and Bulma, and the plotting of Emperor Pilaf. Our wish is for you to tune into this episode!
Kyle and Brandon kick us off for the first Dragon Ball movie review of MANY to come... Dragon Ball Curse of the Blood Rubies OR The Legend of Shenlong. First premiering as a self-titled Dragon Ball movie in December 1986, this movie is an interesting retelling of Goku and Bulma finding the Dragon Balls for the first time, but with no sign of Emperor Pilaf. Is this a good introduction to Dragon Ball for a potential new fan? Maybe. Super Dope Discord: https://discord.gg/sYzFKrj74d https://www.twitch.tv/superdopepodcasts Come join our Facebook group! We talked about Chrono Trigger way back on episode 5 during our discussion of the greatest SNES RPGs we never played. Sitting at #1 on both of our lists was Chrono Trigger, a time-traveling tale of war, chaos, and frog people, and it was about time we sat down and played through this classic. For Micah, it was his very first adventure through Guardia and beyond. For Jono, it was his second tour of time though he barely remembers his first play-through as it occurred during the foggiest of college semesters. So for both of these esteemed gentlemen it was like playing it for the first time. This 3 hour episode digs deep into every facet of the game, including the memorable soundtrack and the amazing worlds you explore. We also talk about Akira Toriyama and how all of his art looks exactly the same. The first enemy you face is almost identical to Emperor Pilaf from Dragon Ball, same colors and clothes and everything...We’d love to hear about your experience with Chrono Trigger so hit us up on social media or patreon! The eternal dragon Shenron (or Shen Long, depending on who you ask) finally appears and is ready to grant that wish. Is it going to be the child Emperor Pilaf or a member of the Ball Brigade? We’ll never tell. Jk we tell you a bunch of times. Topics of discussion include: Oolong’s ultimate sacrifice, Shenron’s dulcet tones, re-dubbing the dub, Gilbert Godfrey’s constant pain, wishing loopholes, that one X-Files episode, our dislike of Victoria’s Secret, boyhood (not the movie, but the state of), Pilaf’s business model, Kame House Rules, The Dog Police, Anime as a gateway drug, cosplay dreams, and Bulma’s skepticism. We also say goodbye to Comedy Bang Bang (the TV show) and issue a thousand-word challenge. They’re really calling a spade a spade in this episode. The dragon balls do indeed get stolen as Emperor Pilaf takes the Ball Brigade through his trapped-filled dungeon. Topics of discussion include: How The Wizard of Oz stole from Dragon Ball, nicknames for private parts, the hip-hop state of the union, our undying love for Shu and Mai, bank robbing advice, self-identifying your generation, calling out Jason Bourne, Oolong’s escape strategy, Yamcha’s indecent Puar-posal, big ass satellite dishes, how bats aren’t traps, hard sci-fi Dragon Ball, the man who couldn’t doodle, and Vince tries to keep us on track. We also introduce a new segment, figure out who's the brigade and who's the squad, and alienate the Harley Quinn fandom. The CSYW crew give there thoughts about the new DBZ movie; what they liked, hated, wished was different and other things. Also, Orlando issues an apology to the Dragon Ball creator, and Matthew says it's time to stop bringing back Emperor Pilaf and BRING BACK ARALE (that and he almost dies drinking cold water).
