Six months ago, The Well Red Mage asked me if Chrono Trigger is a Final Fantasy. From that innocent question grew a six month quest to mine the patience of my guests and test the temperance of my listening audience. On this episode, I ask a bunch of people if this episode should exist and through those questions, learn about the connective tissue between these two games.STARRING (all handles from Twitter) Chrono Katie (@ChronoKatie)Julian Titus (@julian_titus) of The Stage Select Podcast (@StageSelectPod)Mekel Kasanova (@MekelKasanova)Mike Albertin of Games My Mom Found (@mom_found)Moses aka @TheWellRedMageRyan aka @GameswCoffeeRyan Lindsay of KISS 105.3 in Ottawa (@THERyanLindsay) Tim Knowles of The Leetist Trevor and Jeff of New Dad Gaming Podcast (@NewDadGaming)My Website: agamerlooksat40.comMy Discord: https://discord.com/invite/SdaE4atGjCMy Twitter: @agamerlooksat40My TikTok: @agamerlooksat40My Facebook: facebook.com/agamerlooksat40My Insta: @agamerlooksat40My Patreon: patreon.com/agamerlooksat40My Email: agamerlooksat40@gmail.comMy Phone Number: Ehhhhh, not gonna happen. :-D Support the show

These two, who grew up on opposite sides of the Sega/Nintendo divide, embark on a thrilling journey through the gaming landscape. Together, they challenge each other to revisit and play the gems they missed in the gaming golden days. The SNES RPG library is the stuff of legend, so it's easy for the lesser known games to slip through the cracks. Lufia II is one of those titles, and I'm here to tell you it's a game worth exploring said crack for. I'd never played, or heard of it, before this episode, but it's like a standard Final Fantasy RPG meets The Legend of Zelda. You fight battles in classic turn-based RPG combat, but outside of that you solve puzzles and blow up walls like you would in A Link to the Past. I don't love RPGs, but this one hooked me. I have two guests this week. Long-time hot dog, Jnasty, sponsored this episode and got me playing Lufia II in the first place, so he swings by to explain why he's so hot for Sinistrals. And then our power hungry Discord mod, Captain N, gives me a shout to take a deep dive into feeding monsters shields whilee navigating the glitchiest dungeon to ever glitch (it'll all make sense after you listen). And before we save the world, I put together another edition of the Infamous Intro! This week, someone calls for an end to micro-transactions. Will I ever review Cyberpunk 2077? And is Mario 64 a horror game??? Plus we play another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', too! This one features 3 more SNES hidden gem RPGs: Secret of Evermore, Terranigma, and Breath of Fire II. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

After what seems like forever and a day, Final Fantasy XVI has finally arrived on the PlayStation 5. Except, it hasn't really been forever, has it? The Hunger Games Part 1 Chapters 4 and 5 We've made it to the Capitol! But first we've got to talk about something very important: The 7th Saga, a SNES RPG with barely any merch. We've also got our first Hunger Games listicle. Our chapters this week are full of dizzying ups and downs: brutally honest characterization and heartfelt drama alongside ridiculous action movie antics and some puzzling portrayals of a society so depraved it... wears a lot of makeup? Hmm. We chat through our feelings on whether or not the story is portraying cruel opinions a character has or simply espousing them itself, wonder aloud what synthetic fire is, and beg to know what the other costumes in the ceremony were.
Hey everyone! Chase and Emmy are back to discuss ants and rpgs. First up is the Maxis game SimAnt, another PC sim port. Emmy has a lot of love for this game, but Chase isn't a huge fan of bugs. Give this one a listen and find out if Emmy's nostalgia will win the day over Chase's entomophobia. Then we have two games all about magic. The first is a traditional RPG called Paladin's Quest. It's certainly not one of the better known SNES RPGs. Is there a reason for that, or is Paladin's Quest a hidden gem? Finally, it's time to talk about Secret of Mana and it's well-documented troubled development.

Hey there! It's us! We're back! We're talking about another issue of Nintendo Power. This time it's issue 52 which came out in September of 1993. We listen to Newsie tell us about a movie, a song, and some tv shows that debuted that month. Then it's on to talking about more Super Mario All-Stars, more Final Fight 2, SNES RPGS, Rock N' Roll Racing, Mortal Kombat posters and so much more. There's also a pair of comics. This month features a somewhat weak Star Fox and an uncharacteristically good Nester's Adventures. Speaker of Nester's Adventures, if you're reading these on the Internet Archives along with us, you might have noticed that the copy of the magazine that's up there is missing it's Nester's Adventures comic. Fear not, for Link still has this issue in his personal collection and you can see what all the fuss was about on his Instagram @snescapades (you are following him on Instagram, right?) And speaking of social media, you can follow Link again on Twitter @snescapades because he just couldn't stay away from that hell site. Please follow him on Twitter again. He lost all of his followers because he didn't crawl back fast enough.

It's giant robot tanks, fishing, and cyberpunk rpgs. Three games that couldn't be more different. Despite not being your typical SNES games, both Emmy and Link walked away mostly positive on these games. Both MechWarrior and Shadowrun are based on tabletop games by a company called FASA, so this episode starts with a quick rundown of that company before going into the games themselves. MechWarrior is a bit complex, but not overwhelmingly so, and Shadowrun is a pretty fascinating RPG hindered by a few poor design choices. And finally, there's fishing. It's fine. Will MechWarrior's complexity keep it out of the top 100? Will Shadowrun join the upper echelon of SNES RPGs? Will Link land that big bass that's hiding at the bottom of the lake like a coward? Listen and find out!

We talked about Chrono Trigger way back on episode 5 during our discussion of the greatest SNES RPGs we never played. Sitting at #1 on both of our lists was Chrono Trigger, a time-traveling tale of war, chaos, and frog people, and it was about time we sat down and played through this classic. For Micah, it was his very first adventure through Guardia and beyond. For Jono, it was his second tour of time though he barely remembers his first play-through as it occurred during the foggiest of college semesters. So for both of these esteemed gentlemen it was like playing it for the first time. This 3 hour episode digs deep into every facet of the game, including the memorable soundtrack and the amazing worlds you explore. We also talk about Akira Toriyama and how all of his art looks exactly the same. The first enemy you face is almost identical to Emperor Pilaf from Dragon Ball, same colors and clothes and everything...We’d love to hear about your experience with Chrono Trigger so hit us up on social media or patreon!
