We've done it, another show in the bag!But first we catch up on our lives since last recording, which has been pretty brief. Sarah is 54 hours into Dragon Age and Joe's prepping for his parents to come visit, so that's fun. Then we roll into the final episodes for the big finale of Skip Beat! We're both totally underhelmed by the ending but we talk about the show as a whole and we both had a pretty good ride. Sarah fills Joe in on how the story continues in the manga and rank the show against the others. Who is the best protagonist? Which school uniforms are the best? Which pair is the best couple? Who is the best side character? Learn this and more on this finale episode!Recommendations:Joe: Epic the MusicalSarah: Chibi Robo

Kyoko and Ren start their TV gigs and both are on the struggle bus. Kyoko must figure out the source of Mio's anger while Ren must discover what it is to love. As you'd probably guess Kyoko does better here. Just two more till the end!Recommendations:Joe - CloverfieldSarah - Dragon Age: The Veilguard

We continue on with Skip beat as we approach the final arc.In our lives, Joe has gotten one last taste of the Ren Fair before it ends this season and Sarah is struggling to find some good action anime with women in it. If you've got some recommendations send them in!In Skip Beat we finish off Sho's music video and move right on to the next thing, a TV drama! We finally address the age gap in the show as Ren starts to plummet head-over-heels for Kyoko as the last five episode roll up on us. Ren may be in denial but Yashiro is here to tell him that yes, he does in fact like this 16 year old. It's cool dude, this is a TV show.Recommendations:Sarah - Diving Bored PodcastJoe - Over the Garden Wall

We inch our way to a romantic subplot this week. But first, Joe and Sarah spend some time discussing video game sequels, as Joe looks back at the Gears of War Franchise, and Sarah looks forward to the new Dragon Age game.In Skip Beat! Kyoko finds away to get Rin off of her body and back into his bed, because he's sick. Unfortunately for everyone, Rin's whole life is work so he must power through. Will his weakened state allow him to finally connect with Kyoko? Then we jump back to what really matters, revenge! Kyoko gets a chance to star in a music promo for…Sho Fuwa. Kyoko must keep her hate in check long enough to finish the promo. But can she do it with Sho's constant taunts? We cross the halfway point on Skip Beat this week!IRL we'd been having some audio problems. But hopefully it's all good for this episode. Otherwise, Joe has been watching some Gundam including the first Gundam complication movie in theaters and Gundam Wing! Meanwhile, Sarah has picked back up Life in Strange in preparation for the new game out soon!In Skip Beat, Kyoko and Moko join forces to pass a commercial audition and maybe, just maybe, become best friends in the process! Then Kyoko puts on a new hat, as Ren's temporary manager. She must hang out with him all day, which is weird for him because he knows they used to be childhood friends! When will he tell her? Will she find out on her own? Will she perish under the weight of Ren's literal body? We will just have to wait and see.Recommendations:Joe - I Saw the Tv GlowSarah - Annabelle

Joe, on the other hand, has watched the Code Geass sequel and is getting some real sequel Star Wars energy from it (derogatory). We also decide to swap out of recommendation segment for a little update on our Baldur's Gate 3 playthrough, which you can watch on Twitch. In Skip Beat!, we are out for revenge! We get into Kyoko's tragic origin story and cheer her on as she plots her vengeance. She resolves to be in ShowBiz and we work through our complicated feelings about that industry. Then it's off to the audition and we see what talent she's got to show off. It's…unexpected. But will it be enough to land a spot in ShowBiz? Will she ever get her revenge? To discuss what makes Kubo’s new series Burn the Witch so spellbinding, we’re delighted to have on the magically talented localization team for the series from Viz with us today - editor Pancha Diaz (Death Note, Skip Beat), translator Jan Mitsuko Cash (Happy Sugar Life, Toradora), and letterer Vanessa Satone (One Piece, Tokyo Ghoul)! It’s always a pleasure when we can invite the localization team of a series on the show to share their perspectives and experiences on the work. We had a lot of fun doing that with Kaiju No. 8 recently, and since Burn the Witch was such a big new series what with it being Tite Kubo’s follow-up to Bleach and all, we really wanted to have an in-depth conversation about it! We discuss Pancha, Jan, and Vanessa’s career journeys, their experience working on Burn the Witch, and their thoughts on the series, how it compares with Bleach, and where we hope to see the story go next! We also have some exciting news to announce! We’re approaching both the 150th episode of this podcast, and even more significantly - our 5th year anniversary! That’s right, we’ve been doing this podcast for nearly half a decade now! Crazy how much time flies when you’re having fun. And of course, we want to celebrate our 5th year anniversary and we’re going to do so on our 150th episodes, which will come out right around our original premiere date all those years ago around the end of January. What will we do to commemorate our 150th episode? Why, our annual Manga Mavericks survey of course! But this won’t be a normal yearly survey, no, this one will encompass the entirety of the podcast’s history from our very first episode in 2016 to the present! You can vote for your favorite episodes, guests, moments, and so much more from the past five years of the show as well as your favorite manga and news stories. But that’s not all, because we want to give back to our listeners for supporting us these past five years, and we’re doing so with another manga giveaway! All survey takers will be entered for a chance to win a free manga volume of their choosing from our catalog, which includes fresh hits like Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun and High Score Girl to classics like Video Girl Ai and even some old Shonen Jump issues! To top it off, you can earn even more entries in the giveaway if you guys also write us a review on Apple Podcasts between now and when the survey closes and send proof of your review to us via our e-mail at mangamavericks@gmail.com or Twitter, and if you send us an e-mail sharing your thoughts on the show and your experiences with it since you’ve started listening! Covers volumes 1-8 of Fruits Basket by Natsuki TakayaAt the height of the mid-2000s manga boom in the US, there was no bigger series than Fruits Basket. And this story about orphaned Tohru Honda and the Sohma family curse has endured, getting a very special rerelease in recent years. For a series this influential, we brought on one of the biggest Furuba fans of all: Anime News Network editor Jacob Chapman. We discuss why Fruits Basket left such a lasting impression, who our favorite Sohmas are, how Tokyopop and Yen Press’ translations compare, what the curse really is, Kyo’s “true” form and the search for what’s real, Furuba’s message about belief in others, particularly as it relates to religion and family, and much, much more. Most importantly, obviously, we answer the question: Yuki or Kyo? And just think: This is only the first of three episodes about Takaya’s masterpiece.Click here for a transcript of this episodeREFERENCESFruits Basket is available from Yen Press in a very nice collector’s editionThe Fruits Basket anime is available from FunimationJacob’s Fruits Basket radio drama can still be listened to hereAn in-depth Twitter thread from Jacob comparing Yen Press’ editions to the original Tokyopop releasesOther manga Jacob keeps up with (since he doesn’t read that much manga): Attack on Titan, To Your EternityOther big shojo titles popular during Fruits Basket’s heyday: *Skip Beat, *Boys Over FlowersQuiz Segment: Can We Guess Your Chinese Zodiac Based On Your Taste In Food?

Marc starts off this week's show talking about a family scare before jumping into a bit of their movie and TV backlog, talking about the amazing The Guest while not talking about it (to avoid spoilers) and how they still don't like most of Daredevil (even Vincent D'Onofrio's Kingpin). After that, they talk about a few old(er) anime, finishing the fantastic Skip Beat! and the silly Mayo Chiki!, and then follow that up with their two favorite anime of the summer season: the always adorable Sweetness and Lightning and the "please stick the landing" 91 Days. And then, like always, Marc ends with a hefty serving of video games, returning to The Final Station with some bad news and previewing Monsters and Monocles, NeuroVoider, and N++, with a review of Seasons after Fall to wrap it all up (with a very, very pretty bow). Cheers and enjoy the show.

Marc starts off this week's show talking about being sick with their morbid sense of humor and what inspired their latest piece of art (and how much fun they've had working on it). After that, Marc talks about two anime, one of which they love and one of which they don't love: Skip Beat! and Natsuyuki Rendezvous. And then, like always, Marc ends with some video games, hitting the Battlefield 1 beta and yet another indie game about surviving (and helping other survive), The Final Station. Cheers and enjoy the show.

The Skip Beat! Kickstarter was a success! Not only did it meet it's funding goal, but the stretch goal for a blu-ray release as well! This bodes very well for the future of crowd funding campaigns to fund other anime series that have been overlooked or were considered to be tough-sells by big-name licensors. Similarly, the Kimagure Orange Road Kickstarter is going swimmingly as well. When you think about it, it's already half-way there to reaching the goal required to get the series fully published, and there's plenty of time left. As always, I strongly encourage you to support this Kickstarter if you already haven't. Even if you don't have a lot to give, any amount you can give can make a difference. Beyond simply getting this classic title published, this Kickstarter will open up doors for similar projects and more classic or obscure manga beyond just Osamu Tezuka's works to potentially receive crowd-funding campaigns. Both the Skip Beat! and KOR campaigns' success have set great precedents that should hopefully allow a lot of titles that wouldn't or couldn't be brought over through traditional means finally see a western release. These are exciting times, and I'm crossing a fingers a few currently unlicensed favorites of mine will be lucky enough to receive similar treatment one day very soon. Enough with the pitch, let's get on with the show! Join your titular Manga Mavericks, Colton and Sid, as we once again dive into the fast-paced and sexy world of manga news! And this episode covers some BIG news, presenting many fascinating questions worth pondering. What are the ramifications of Kadokawa's partnerships with Crunchyroll and Yen Press? Will the Death Note live-action movie actually be good? When will Colton and Sid finally stop going off tangent and answer the Q&A already?! Plus, rundowns of the latest NYT Top Selling Manga List, the March Bookscan Top 20 Graphic Novels List, and lots of licensing news!
