The conversation moves from Brandon Sanderson's story collection Tailored Realities to two intergenerational stories centered on daughters—Cursed Daughters by Oyinkan Braithwaite and As Many Souls as Stars by Natasha Siegel—where voice and perspective carry particular emotional weight. As Alex observes, these audiobooks demonstrate how narration can enhance both broad narrative structures and more focused, character-driven works. On this week's episode of the Peter Crouch Podcast, Pete, Sids, and Chris dive headfirst into the magic — and madness — of the FA Cup. Fresh off an unforgettable third round, the lads break down one of the greatest underdog stories you'll ever hear, as non-league Macclesfield stun Crystal Palace and remind everyone why this competition still matters.Crouchy opens up about why these moments genuinely move him, sharing his love for the underdog and why football stories like this never lose their power. We hear firsthand from FA Cup hero Sam Heathcote — a PE teacher by day — as he joins the pod straight from the car en route to his next game, still buzzing from the biggest moment of his life.Elsewhere, the conversation turns darker as the lads unpack the brutal realities of the January transfer window. Sids delivers a painfully honest story about a training-ground moment that changed everything, revealing just how quickly confidence, careers, and clubs can turn… From muddy six-yard boxes to that infamous line — “we won't stop you” — this episode has it all.FA Cup magic, transfer trauma, darts obsession, Spanish songs, and absolute chaos. HEADLINE: Erikson, Sagas, and Vinland Location BOOK TITLE: American Vikings: How the Norse Sailed into the Lands and Imaginations of America AUTHOR: Martyn Whittock 100 WORD SUMMARY: The source focuses on the westward journey from Greenland, established by Erik the Red, to lands sighted by storm-driven sailors. His son, Leif Erikson, led expeditions around 1000 AD to Helluland (Baffin Island) and Markland (Labrador). This history is recorded in the Saga of Erik the Red (13th century) and the Saga of the Greenlanders (14th century). They reached a land they called Vinland, described as having wild grapes and wheat, suggesting a mild climate and abundant timber. The small population in Greenland ultimately hindered sustained settlement. Based on where wild grapes (like the fox grape) and wheat grow, Vinland must have been located significantly further south than Newfoundland, possibly reaching New Brunswick or New England.

HEADLINE: Runestones, Artifacts, and Modern Misappropriation BOOK TITLE: American Vikings: How the Norse Sailed into the Lands and Imaginations of America AUTHOR: Martyn Whittock 100 WORD SUMMARY: Following the translation of the sagas, runestones (e.g., Kensington in Minnesota) began appearing, primarily after 1865. These are almost certainly fakes created by newly arrived Scandinavian immigrants seeking to claim "prior title" to the land by asserting "Vikings were here first." The only artifact likely to be genuine is the Maine Penny (Goddard Coin), found at a Native American trading site in 1957. It was likely passed along Native American trade networks, indicating Norsecontact as far south as Maine.

Saga Brief 27d - Icelandic Impressions of the Sagas (Interview with Ragnhildur Sigurðardóttir)

In this special Saga Brief, we wrap up our four-part series from Iceland with an interview recorded in the shadow of Snæfellsjökull, one of the most iconic landscapes in the country. This time, we are joined by Ragnhildur Sigurðardóttir, park manager of Snæfellsjökull National Park, for a wide-ranging conversation about the sagas, Icelandic heritage, and the powerful connection between people and place. Snæfellsjökull National Park is a natural treasure of Iceland and a must-see destination for fans of Saga Thing and lovers of history, literature, and nature alike. Located at the western tip of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, it was established to protect the dramatic landscapes surrounding the iconic peak of the glacier-capped volcano Snæfellsjökull. The park encompasses a remarkable variety of geological features, from windswept lava fields and jagged cliffs to hidden caves and mossy craters. It's a place where history, legend, and natural beauty intertwine seamlessly. After a full day of work in the park, Ragnhildur met us in nearby Arnarstapi at the foot of the massive statue of Bárður Snæfellsás. You may remember Bárður as the mythical guardian of the peninsula and central figure in Bárðar saga Snæfellsáss. As a self-described book lover and lifelong reader of the sagas, Ragnhildur brought a deeply personal perspective to our conversation, especially in her reflections on Guðríður víðförla Þorbjarnardóttir (Gudrid the Far-Traveled) from the Vinland sagas. As we mention in the intro, this interview came at the end of an unforgettable day that included a magical horse ride along the beach with Siggi from Stóri-Kambur and several stops at saga sites. It was the kind of day where the sagas feel alive in the landscape, which was one of the most important goals of this trip. And, if you're planning a trip to the Snæfellsnes peninsula, we highly recommend a stop at Stóri-Kambur, where you can ride one of their beautiful Icelandic horses and learn about the special place these animals hold in Icelandic culture and daily life. We're so grateful to Ragnhildur for sharing her time and insight with us. Her deep care for the land and its stories really shines through in this conversation.
