Sagi islandzkie – historie bogów, biskupów i wikingów | prof. Jakub Morawiec, dr Marta Rey-Radlińska

Opowieści o królach, o możnych rodach, o poetach, o wojnach, biskupach, a w dużej mierze… o alkoholu. Link do informacji o konferencji: https://us.edu.pl/wydzial/wh/en/konferencje-naukowe/sagaconference2025/

This special Saga Brief interview with Anna Melsteð (of the Eyrbyggja Saga Society) was recorded at the foot of Helgafell on a drizzly afternoon following a full day of exploring key sites from Eyrbyggja Saga with Anna, Eyberg, and Guðlaug as our guides. Our day began with a quick viewing of the original site of the Þórsnessþing, mainly to get a view of where drítsker might be. We followed that up with a rugged hike to Vigrafjörður, where the Thorbrandssons and Thorlakssons famously clashed on the ice in chapter 45 of the saga. From there, we trekked to Bólstað on Álftafjörður to pay our respects to Andy's thingman Arnkell. We were even greeted with a rainbow, a generous gift from the best man in the saga. But the biggest highlight was walking the paths carved (allegedly) by the Swedish berserks Halli and Leiknir, followed by a brief rest at the overgrown ruins of Killer-Stýr's sauna, where their tale ended in steam and the tip of Stýr's spear. It was, of course, one of the most rewarding days we've ever spent in Iceland. The stories of Eyrbyggja Saga came alive in a powerful new way as we stood in the places where they unfolded. The day concluded at Hraunháls, where we enjoyed Icelandic hospitality, a tasty homemade cake, and a glimpse of the proofs for the incredible Eyrbyggja Saga tapestry. Can you tell who these two lovebirds might be? Also note the way the upper and lower registers contribute to the story. As evening approached, we finally drove over to the base of Helgafell to sit down with Anna for a chat about her work, the power of landscape in the sagas, and the growing community of saga enthusiasts on Snæfellsnes. We also got some more help with our Icelandic pronunciation. Be sure to check out what the Eyrbyggja Saga Society is up to on their webpage and follow them on Facebook. You can also stay at Hraunháls through Airbnb and enjoy the hospitality of Eyberg and Guðlaug. Finally, author Kyra Davis joins to chat about her new historical novel, The Great Mann, set in the glitzy Black elite enclave of West Adams Heights during the 1940s—a world of jazz, galas, and the push-pull of cultural identity.

In this special Saga Brief, we visit historic Reykholt, once home to Snorri Sturluson, for a fascinating conversation with Sigrún Guttormsdóttir Þormar, department manager at Snorrastofa. This interview is the second installment in our four-part series recorded on-site during our recent trip to Iceland. Sigrún generously met with us on a Saturday to talk about Snorri's life, legacy, and the important work being done at Snorrastofa to continue the long tradition of learning at Reykholt on the site. Along the way, she shared insights into Snorri's role as a chieftain, writer, and political figure in 13th-century Iceland, offering a more nuanced portrait of the man we often call “infamous.” If you're planning a trip to Iceland, we can't recommend a stop in Reykholt highly enough. In addition to its rich history, the Snorrastofa cultural and medieval studies center offers an engaging exhibition on Snorri's life, an inviting research library, and an exceptional gift shop. For more about Snorrastofa, including visitor info, exhibitions, and ongoing research, visit: https://snorrastofa.is Enjoy the episode and let us know what you think about Snorri's legacy after hearing from someone who engages with it every day. On our recent trip to Iceland, we had the pleasure of speaking to a variety of fascinating people about their interest in the sagas. Our goal was to get a sense of how these individuals read and engage with these medieval texts in a modern context. Saga Brief 27, a 4 part interview series, is the result of those efforts. In this first episode, we chat with Björn Júlíus Grímsson, an Icelandic tour guide who loves to share the stunning landscapes and rich culture of his country on sightseeing tours and excursions all over Iceland. He's also a regular Saga Thing listener! Though the interview itself is regrettably brief, we spent a great deal of time at lunch and after the interview chatting with Björn and his lovely wife Zoe about the sagas, about the logistics of running a tour in Iceland, about audio production, and about life in Iceland and America. It was such a pleasure getting to know them, being welcomed into their home, playing with their son, and sharing that time together. And Björn was kind enough to join us for a walk through Þingvellir the following day. By the end of our visit, it felt like we'd known them for ages even though we had really just met right before this interview. As we begin working on our official Saga Thing tours, we plan to take full advantage of Björn and Zoe's expertise and talents. If you can't wait for the Saga Thing tour, you can get in touch with Björn through his website www.allovericeland.com and follow him on Instagram. You should also check out Zoe's music on Spotify. Our Grand Tour continues with the second half of Dragon Ball GT, which marked the end of the 18-year ‘Toriyama Block' on Fuji TV, and the end of new Dragon Ball stories on TV until Dragon Ball Super nearly 20 years later. The first few episodes here cover the ‘Super Android 17' Arc, which is probably the very worst bit of Dragon Ball ever created, but the ‘Shadow Dragons' Saga has always had more mixed reception, including some vocal defenders. What do Sean and Jonathan make of it? Well, we aren't so hot on that one either, despite some good ideas and individual strong moments throughout. Still, diagnosing what ails Dragon Ball GT continues to make for a fascinating and fun conversation.Enjoy, and come back next week as we return to the dawn of anime with one of the great works by Japan's ‘God of Manga,' Tezuka Osamu, and the 1969 series Dororo! Time Chart:Theme Song: 0:00:00 – 0:01:16Intro and History: 0:01:16 – 0:51:03Eyecatch Break: 0:51:03 – 0:51:50Dragon Ball GT Review: 0:51:50 – 2:53:33End Theme: 2:53:33 – 2:54:34Subscribe to our YouTube channels! Japanimation Station: https://www.youtube.com/c/japanimationstation  Purely Academic: https://www.youtube.com/@purelyacademicpodcastRead Jonathan Lack's movie reviews and stay up to date with all our podcast projects at https://www.jonathanlack.comSubscribe to PURELY ACADEMIC, our monthly variety podcast about movies, video games, TV, and more: https://purelyacademic.simplecast.comRead Jonathan's book 200 Reviews in Paperback or on Kindle – https://a.co/d/bLx53vK“Welcome to Japanimation Station” – Music by Thomas Lack, Lyrics by Sean Chapman, featuring Hatsune Miku. “Rolled Into One” – Music & Lyrics by Thomas Lack, featuring Hatsune Miku. https://www.thomaslack.com

Our new season begins with a blast from the past, as we return to the 90s for an in-depth look at Dragon Ball GT, the 64-episode, anime-only extension of Toriyama Akira's classic series. While GT has always proven divisive among Dragon Ball fans, Sean and Jonathan have never made it all the way through – and doing so turns out to be a bit of a challenge, because as much as we both love all things Dragon Ball, this particular entryis not our cup of tea. Despite the regularly fantastic vocal cast, strong animation including character designs from the great Nakatsuru Katsuyoshi, and a promising premise with a miniaturized Son Goku travelling the universe in search of Dragon Balls, the series is a creative mess, with frequently threadbare storytelling, terrible background music, and disappointing action. In this first episode, we discuss the Black Star Dragon Ball and Baby Arcs, which takes us through a few creative high points on our way to Super Saiyan 4 – but this is not, suffice it to say, our favorite stop on our Grand Tour.  Enjoy, and come back next week as we review the rest of Dragon Ball GT with episodes 41-64 and the Super 17 and Shadow Dragon Sagas.Time Chart:Theme Song: 0:00:00 – 0:01:12Intro and History: 0:01:12 – 1:33:34Eyecatch Break: 1:33:34 – 1:34:19Dragon Ball GT Review: 1:34:19 – 3:53:18End Theme: 3:13:54 – 3:54:21Subscribe to our YouTube channels! “Happily Ever After” – Music & Lyrics by Thomas Lack, featuring Hatsune Miku. https://www.thomaslack.com

Vikings and valkyries have captivated our imaginations for centuries, with greater and lesser degrees of historical accuracy. But as so often happens, the very people reading Snorri Sturluson or the Sagas of Icelanders today are the ones who were left out of history to begin with—the ordinary people doing the quietly heroic work of farming, midwifing, blacksmithing, and any number of difficult daily tasks. In her new book, Embers of the Hands: Hidden Histories of the Viking Age, the historian Eleanor Barraclough puts ordinary people at the center of the story. The sagas may tell of “warriors scrubbing beer kegs and Valkyries pouring glasses of wine in the afterlife,” but the exploits of the everyday Viking were every bit as interesting. Their stories bring to life a world of “wood, wool, flax, bone, stone, leather and antler, hand-wrought and fashioned”—a world that remains endlessly captivating, from the runes women carved to fetch their lovers home from the pub to the scribblings of a wee child.Go beyond the episode:Eleanor Barraclough's Embers of the Hands: Hidden Histories of the Viking AgeVisit our episode page for primary source links and historical fiction we loveTune in every (other) week to catch interviews with the liveliest voices from literature, the arts, sciences, history, and public affairs; reports on cutting-edge works in progress; long-form narratives; and compelling excerpts from new books. Hi folks! We've got something a little different for you this week: episode 1 of Critical Role & Sagas of Sundry's Goblin Mode -- hope you enjoy! Sagas of Sundry: Goblin Mode is the latest actual play narrative fantasy series from Geek & Sundry in partnership with Realm. Using the popular TTRPG Dungeons & Dragons, Goblin Mode tells an ever-evolving improvised story full of magic, monsters, and mayhem.  Goblin Mode is not your traditional fantasy story. These aren't the mighty warriors who would be called to a tavern by a mysterious stranger. Rather, these characters would be mere crossbow fodder for a group of actual intrepid heroes. Lead by our storyteller Amy Vorpahl and cast members Jason Nguyen, Danielle Radford, and Dan Casey, Goblin Mode tells the tale of a trio of hapless minions – a goblin and two skeletons – toiling their days away in the service of an evil necromancer.  When a band of treasure-hungry “heroes” attack the dungeon they once called home, these poor unfortunate souls wind up trapped in a pit. By the time the dust settles, everyone they knew is dead, their old lives are gone, and their home is under new management. Will they seek vengeance? Will they realize there's more to life than the Cave Allegory they lived in? Will they become the hope the world needs to stop its impending doom? Find out for yourself with the very first episode of Goblin Mode. Sagas of Sundry: Goblin Mode is available on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, YouTube, and wherever fine podcasts are served.
