Short answer is sort of. We're back, it's been a minute and that's kind of been a pattern, for good reason but we'll get to that. We mentioned a few episode ago that the scope and scale of the podcast was likely to change and if you've been a long time listener you've already likely noticed. We've made the decision to keep moving in an even more casual direction that'll honestly look a lot more like this episode in terms of format, what do I mean by that? Really the structure and frequency of our episodes are the things that'll be changing most. We'll be continuing with our kind of sporadic upload schedule for the foreseeable future and our  content will be a lot less comprehensive and a lot more based on what we're watching rather than focusing on a season as a whole. We've had a blast these past 4 years covering anime, and we don't want to hang that up but the reality is as always that things change and this how things shook out. Thank you to all of the folks who've tuned in either for an episode or since the beginning, we're not going away, we'll still be around bullshitting about cartoons from time to time, but it feels worthy of an explanation so there it is. Power Rankings live @tjapod on instagram

In this video, we'll take a look at what made Funimation special, why its shutdown still affects anime fans today, and whether Crunchyroll has truly filled the gap. Did we lose something important in the transition? Let's talk about it!

Send us a textEver missed out on a game you wanted to play? Sega's recent decision to delist several games from major platforms like Steam, Xbox, Switch, and PlayStation has sparked heated discussions in the gaming community. We explore the ramifications for those who didn't get a chance to grab these titles and what it signifies for the industry's future. Adding more layers to the gaming world, we then shift to Sony's bold $300 million partnership with Kadokawa Corporation. As Sony becomes the largest shareholder, we unravel how this alliance could revolutionize anime, TV, and gaming collaborations on a global scale, leveraging Sony's ownership of Funimation and Crunchyroll.Have you ever felt nostalgic listening to the soundtrack of your favorite video game? In this episode, we stroll down memory lane, celebrating the iconic music of classic games like Ultra Beast, Crazy Taxi, and Streets of Rage. If you've ever had a game night to Nintendo's vast music library, you'll know the charm it brings. We also get excited about upcoming fighting game releases, including Mortal Kombat, Tekken, and Street Fighter, while speculating on potential revivals like Toe Jammer Earl and Shinobi. Music is a gateway to our gaming past and future, and we revel in its power to invoke cherished memories and inspire new adventures. Finally, we share an amusing tale involving the Charlotte Hornets mascot, Hugo, and a 13-year-old fan's rollercoaster experience with a PlayStation 5 gift. Initially left disappointed, the young fan's story took a turn for the better, eventually receiving the actual console and a VIP game experience. We critique the team's initial flub, emphasizing the importance of authenticity in corporate gestures. Crunchyroll President Rahul Purini on how anime took over the world

Today, I'm talking with Rahul Purini, the president of Crunchyroll, a streaming service focused entirely on anime — and really, the biggest anime service still going. Rahul has a long history with anime: he spent more than seven years at Funimation, a company that started in the 90s to distribute Dragon Ball Z to US audiences, before getting the top job at Crunchyroll. Anime might seem like niche content, but it's not nearly as niche as you might think – our colleagues over at Polygon just ran a huge survey of anime viewers and found that 42% of Gen Z and 25% of millennials watch anime regularly. And Crunchyroll is growing with that audience — like most entertainment providers, the service absolutely exploded during the pandemic, going from 5 million paying subscribers in 2021 to more than 13 million as of last month.  But interestingly Rahul says Crunchyroll's growth isn't being driven by more and more people watching anime, but more and more anime fans — especially those watching pirated content — choosing to pay for it. Podcast #1138: Who Needs to Buy Physical Media?

On this week's show we take a brief look at a $120 wireless HDMI solution and we ask, who Needs to Buy Physical Media? We also read your emails and take a look at the news. News: Pay TV Companies, and the DOJ, Push Back on Big ‘Spulu' Sports Streaming Joint Venture Roku (ROKU) shares down 16% after FQ4 earnings, Oppenheimer downgrades Comcast and Paramount Talk About Combining U.S. Streaming Services Walmart to acquire Vizio in $2.3 billion deal BMOSTE Wireless HDMI Transmitter and Receiver Small transmitter and receiver. About the size of USB Stick Dual-Band WI-FI. Long range (30m) stable connection Plug and play 1080p $120 Easily to setup but you need to provide power via the USB cable that is included. My Macbook Pro and Projector USB did not have enough power to run the device. I needed to add an external power supply to make it work. Once it was connected I immediately saw my computer screen.  The picture looked good with no breakups while the laptop was in the same room. There  was a lag that was noticeable and made it quirky to use the mouse. I think for gaming this is going to be a big issue. But for watching movies it's not really an issue at all. When I moved the laptop into another room that was about twenty feet away with two walls between the transmitter and receiver, the picture froze . However putting the laptop in the room directly behind the projector with one wall had no impact on the picture. If the TX and RX are in  the same room you will have no issues. One wall will probably work but it will decrease the distance that you can transmit. Two walls will probably not work.  If you need a wireless 1080p solution you can't beat this device on size and cost. Just keep distance and the number of walls you are going through in mind. We'll take a look at their 4K solution which is much bigger in size and costs about $50 more.  Who Needs to Buy Physical Media Last week we received an email from a listener named Bob with a link to an article that discussed what “forever” means in the terms of digital content. The article pointed out that a streaming service owned by Sony was dumping libraries after April 2nd. You may not have heard about this because the streaming service is for Anime and is called Funimation. It's not like you'll be losing movies from Warner Brothers or Sony Pictures. There is a lot of talk about physical media vs digital. Which one would you rather have and use? Do you even need discs anymore? In this episode we will examine why or who would want to buy physical discs.  Let's take a look at one of the biggest movies of last year and determine if you should buy the disc, buy the digital version, rent, or stream the movie. Oppenheimer - The story of American scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer and his role in the development of the atomic bomb. UHD - $23 includes Blu-Ray and Digital Code Blu-Ray - $18 include DVD and Digital Code Amazon Prime Video/AppleTV $19.99 Amazon Prime Video/AppleTV  Rent $5.99 Peacock included with Service With all these options what makes the most sense? Are you going to watch it over and over in a theater that you spent thousands of dollars on and want every ounce of performance out of your system? Then by all means get the UHD Disc. That will be your best looking and sounding experience. You have a digital code as well, so if you just want to watch Oppenheimer for the tenth time without having to go through your library to find the disc and pop it into your player, you can call it up on whatever STB you use. If you just want to watch it once, even in your theater that cost thousands of dollars, rent it on Apple, Amazon, Vudu, or whatever service you use. If you decide later that you want to watch it once or twice more, you're still ahead of the game! There may be a slight perceivable degradation in quality but is it worth $12-$18 to barely notice an improvement in picture and sound? If you are sitting in a room with an awesome OLED and a high quality soundbar you may want to sign up for Peacock and stream it through the service for $12 a month. This option allows you to  stream the many other shows available and then cancel if you don't find more value. Peacock allows you to stream Oppenheimer for $6 if you don't mind limited commercials. Only do this if there are other shows/movies you want to check out otherwise you can rent it for $6 on the various platforms without commercials. Disc sales have been declining for the last five years as people switch to streaming services to watch movies instead of disc purchase and rentals. There are less and less reasons for studios to manufacture discs. Those who like to have the physical copy of the disc are the vast minority.  Whether you use Vudu, Amazon, or Apple, you have a huge library at your fingertips. Buy the digital copy of the movies you like to watch on repeat, rent the ones you want to watch once. Hell we'll say it, it's like having a Kaleidescape! If your hangup is quality, the difference in quality is pretty small because the compression and broadband speeds have both improved in the last ten years. And when noticeable, it's still not like comparing Standard Definition to High Definition. It's more like comparing 1080i to 720p ATSC from back in 2006. Both huge improvements over what we had been watching.  Our recommendation going forward is: If you have a large library of physical media, you can rip what you have and put it on a server. Plex is great and easy to use. For future titles, buy/rent on the digital store of your choice. If the title is supported by Movies Everywhere you can watch on multiple platforms across multiple apps!

Welcome to Multiverse News, Your source for Information about all your favorite fictional universes. The 2024 Super Bowl was the most-watched program in American television history with 123.4 million viewers. The House of Mouse let loose several bits of exciting news after their quarterly earnings call on February 7. Animation fans were surprised with the release of a teaser trailer for Moana 2, which will be in theaters in November. Bob Iger also announced that Zootopia 2 will release in 2025 and Frozen 3 and Toy Story 5 will drop in 2026. Fans of the recent Percy Jackson and the Olympians series officially received the news that season two has been greenlit. Disney is investing $1.5 billion Epic Games - known best for Fortnite. CEO Bob Iger explained that the goal is to create a gaming universe that features beloved characters from Disney's hottest franchises such as Marvel, Star Wars, Pixar, and more. And last - but never least - it was announced that Taylor Swift's concert film The Eras Tour will stream exclusively on Disney+ beginning March 15.Last week we discussed the seemingly-rushed new Jurassic World movie, which had announced that its director would be David Leitch. But talks between Universal and Leith fell through and the director is no longer attached to the project.  In a surprising move, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences governing board announced a new category that will first be given away in 2026 - Best Achievement in Casting. It's been nearly 25 years since a new category was announced - the last one being Best Animated Feature Film in 2001. A joint statement from the Academy Casting Director Branch governors expressed appreciation for the acknowledgment and recognition for casting directors. Official rules will be announced in April 2025 and films of that year will be the first ones considered for the award.  Paramount released the first trailer for its limited series and Sonic the Hedgehog spin-off, Knuckles, starring Idris Elba in the lead voice acting role. The six episode show will debut on Paramount+ on April 26. This March, Marvel Comics will release a prelude comic for the X-Men ‘97 animated show. The first issue features a wraparound cover by Russell Dauterman. The limited series will be four issues long. Celine Song is reuniting with A24 for her second feature film following her Best Picture directorial debut Past Lives. The new film, titled Materialists, is described as a romantic comedy with Dakota Johnson, Pedro Pascal, and Chris Evans in early talks to star. Sony is shutting down its Funimation app and moving subscribers over to Crunchyroll, but the move does not include their already purchased content. Seven Star Wars comics will feature variant covers featuring some of the women of the galaxy far, far away for Women's History Month in March. HBO is developing an Aegon's Conquest Game of Thrones series, which will serve as a prequel to House of the Dragon. Mattson Tomlin, who wrote parts of Matt Reeves' The Batman and is co-writing the upcoming sequel, will write the series. Michael Chaves, who has directed previous installments in The Conjuring franchise, including 2021's The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It and The Nun II is in negotiations to direct what is being eyed as the fourth and final outing in the franchise currently under the working titled The Conjuring 4. After being saved from a tax break death at Warner Bros., the John Cena and Lana Condor movie, Coyote Vs Acme is officially being shelved forever. Although Warner Brothers did attempt to shop the film to other studios including Netflix, Amazon, and Paramount, their asking price of between $75 and $80 million for the film was too high to attract a buyer. Wicked author Gregory Maguire will release a new prequel titled Elphie: A Wicked Childhood on October 1. Maguire has written eight Oz-inspired books.
