This week on Bad Dads Film Review, we complete our accidental trilogy of “third things.” After covering Close Encounters of the Third Kind on the midweek show, we turn to Army of Darkness, Sam Raimi's third Evil Dead film, and use that as an excuse to dig into the noble, messy and often suspicious art of the threequel.There is no formal intro this week — time has apparently been attacked by Deadites — so we open with a catch-up on what everyone has been watching. Reegs has been busy with Backrooms, Obsession, Disclosure Day and Apple TV's Cape Fear, which gets a recommendation so long as you know going in that it is extremely ridiculous. Sidey has finally finished The Pit, finding the second season weaker than the first but still worth the time, and has also watched Backrooms and started The Mandalorian. Dan has finished series five of Slow Horses, which he continues to push as an absolute treat, and has also seen The Odyssey at the cinema, where three hours apparently went by surprisingly quickly.That leads us into the usual wandering preamble: 4DX screenings with shaking seats, water and wind; panoramic side-screen cinema formats; the Sphere in Vegas; Sidey somehow still not having made it to IMAX; Spider-Man: Brand New Day and big cinema opening weekends; Tom Holland and Jon Bernthal on Hot Ones; and the general horror of people getting overconfident with hot sauce before reality arrives in liquid form.The Top 5 this week is third films in a franchise, which gives us one of those lists where genuinely great films sit shoulder to shoulder with absolute nonsense. Dan opens strongly with The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, a film that swept the Oscars so hard it practically brought its own broom. Sidey goes for Toy Story 3, remembering Lotso, Spanish Buzz, the daycare escape, the furnace sequence and the emotional finality of Andy giving up his toys. Reegs makes a spirited defence of The Matrix Revolutions, arguing that its uneasy truce ending and refusal to give everyone a simple victory has aged better than its reputation suggests.From there, we move through Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, with Sean Connery, River Phoenix and the Holy Grail; The Bourne Ultimatum, which Sidey remembers as peak Jason Bourne closure and kinetic shaky-cam action; Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, praised by Reegs for Rocket's unexpectedly emotional backstory; The Naked Gun 33⅓: The Final Insult, because Frank Drebin remains Frank Drebin; and Die Hard with a Vengeance, which gives Sidey an excuse to talk about Zeus, Simon Says, Jeremy Irons and New York puzzle chaos.There are plenty of other third-film detours too, including RoboCop 3, Austin Powers in Goldmember, The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, Alien 3, John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum, Back to the Future Part III, Halloween III: Season of the Witch, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, the Cornetto trilogy, Avengers: Infinity War, Blade: Trinity, Karate Kid Part III and Ocean's 13. Sidey bends the rules by choosing the third episode of Twin Peaks, “Zen, or the Skill to Catch a Killer,” while Dan lands on Before Midnight, the third film in Richard Linklater's Before trilogy.Eventually, we arrive in 1300 AD for Army of Darkness itself. Dan has not seen it, but has correctly gathered that this is not really the same kind of horror film as The Evil Dead. Reegs, who has seen it many times, explains the tonal journey of the series: the first film as bleak, grimy horror; Evil Dead II as a genuine horror-comedy masterpiece; and Army of Darkness as the point where Ash becomes the full cartoon version of himself — part action hero, part idiot, part Bruce Campbell chin-delivery system.We talk about Sam Raimi's direction, Bill Pope's cinematography before The Matrix, Danny Elfman's contribution to the score, and the way Raimi's visual energy clearly echoes forward into later filmmakers such as Edgar Wright. The plot is gloriously simple and gloriously stupid: Ash is dragged through time after Evil Dead II, lands in the middle of a medieval conflict between Lord Arthur and Henry the Red, gets thrown into a pit, fights Deadites, reclaims his chainsaw hand, introduces everyone to the boomstick, and immediately becomes insufferable once the locals start treating him as their prophesied saviour.The film then sends Ash off to retrieve the Necronomicon, with one very clear instruction: say the words “Klaatu barada nikto” before taking the book. Naturally, Ash being Ash, he half-remembers, fudges it and unleashes the titular army of darkness. Along the way we get the windmill sequence, tiny mirror Ashes, Three Stooges slapstick, bad Ash splitting out of good Ash, Sheila falling for exactly the worst man available, and a castle siege finale full of skeletons, homemade weapons, a modified car and Ray Harryhausen-style chaos.We also get into the two endings: the darker UK/director's cut version, where Ash takes too many drops and wakes up in a ruined future, and the more crowd-pleasing US S-Mart ending, where he returns to work, tells the story and gets one last heroic Deadite showdown. Reegs prefers the bleaker ending because it feels funnier and more in keeping with Ash's ability to mess up almost everything.The verdict is affectionate, even if slightly qualified. Reegs still thinks Evil Dead II is the one to watch if you only watch one Evil Dead film, and he does not think Army of Darkness is great in quite the same way. But it is funny, quotable, inventive and packed with cult moments: the boomstick, S-Mart, “primitive screwheads,” bad magic words, skeleton armies and Bruce Campbell at maximum Ash. Sidey thinks Dan would probably enjoy it, describing it as something like The Princess Bride with Ray Harryhausen effects and comedy horror nonsense thrown in.So the final recommendation is simple: if you only watch one, Reegs says watch Evil Dead II. Soviet communism appeared to be the only organized force willing to fight the Nazis. Kim Philby did not seek out the NKVD — he fell into their hands almost by accident when he went to work with the Viennese underground and met Litzy Friedmann, whose contacts led straight to Soviet intelligence. His recruitment was as much luck as design. John Cairncross was the only one of the five who did not come from the upper-middle or upper class. Born in 1913 in Lesmahagow, a mining town south of Glasgow, the son of an ironmonger and one of eight children, he arrived at Cambridge already primed with a chip on his shoulder — and was immediately reminded by Anthony Blunt and others that he was not quite one of them. Guy Burgess was literally the last person the Soviets wanted to recruit — their own list had him at the bottom. He was a prolific drunk who couldn't keep secrets and would tell people he was a spy when intoxicated. They eventually let him in because he'd worked it out and it was better to have him inside the tent. Cairncross's route into Bletchley Park came through losing his job in Lord Hankey's office when Churchill became Prime Minister and cleared out Chamberlain's people. He simply asked the right person to write the right letter, and was hired to work in Hut Three. Nobody ran adequate background checks — being a Cambridge man was effectively sufficient. Stealing secrets from Bletchley was almost embarrassingly easy. Cairncross would take raw decrypts from the room where they were waiting to be incinerated, stuff them in his trousers, walk out unchecked, get on the train to London, and hand them to his handler. Getting in without a pass was dangerous; leaving was essentially unmonitored. Cairncross's contribution to the Battle of Kursk — providing intelligence that allowed the Red Army Air Force to locate and destroy several hundred Luftwaffe aircraft on the ground — was real, but its precise importance is genuinely contested. The volume and quality of intelligence over years, not any single document, is what made the Cambridge Five so valuable. The reason none of the five were prosecuted comes down to evidence — specifically the Venona Project. The Americans were never going to allow their top-secret ongoing cryptanalytic operation to be exposed in a British criminal court, and without that evidence, MI5 had nothing admissible. The deal offered to Blunt and Cairncross: tell us everything and we guarantee you'll never be prosecuted. Anthony Blunt accidentally exposed himself by attempting to sue Private Eye for insinuating he was the fourth man. To bring a case you have to go public — which immediately told everyone in the journalistic world exactly who he was, and forced Margaret Thatcher to make a statement in the House of Commons using qualified parliamentary immunity. The Cambridge Five story endures because it is simultaneously a great spy thriller, a story about British class and the establishment's habit of protecting its own, and a genuinely embarrassing episode that helped bring down governments. John le Carré based the villain of Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy directly on Kim Philby, and the story has never quite gone away. Subscribe to our YouTube channel On our political radar this week… Donald Trump says he's getting bored with his war, doesn't care about the mid-terms … but is laser focused on what matters: his reflecting pond renovation, diverting money from national parks for his D.C. cleanup, the Arc ‘d Trump, taking over DC golf courses, the UFC version of the ancient gladiator battles to the death, and reminding us daily that he's passed a dementia screening test four times. His latest middle finger to the nation: suggesting that the Las Vegas-style Fight Club arena on what used to be the White House lawn become a permanent part of the landscape. Vegas has the Dome and Elvis Wedding chapel; the home of Presidents, if Trump has his way, will have its own dome and a massive wedding reception hall. And it's being reported that Trump is looting money from National Parks maintenance to pay for his July 4 fireworks show, the Reflecting Pool, a White House helipad and DC cleanup projects. He'll burn up 1.6-million dollars blowing up stuff on the 4th … even as he burns up billions every week blowing up stuff in Iran. In an administration populated by the absolutely worst cabinet in American history, Trump manages to lower the bar even further with the appointment of Michigander housing developer and certified Trump suck-up Bill Pulte as acting Director of National Intelligence, a job for which he has absolutely no qualifications. Actors Matt Damon and John Krasinski … a.k.a. Jason Bourne and Jack Ryan … would be more qualified. Adding the the Bad Cabinet Blues: the new director of Homeland Security, Markwayne Mullins, says as far as he's concerned following court orders is optional. Michigan Democrats are optimistic after making the case to the national party that Michigan should be in the first tier of 2028 presidential primaries. The state party has also rejected appeals related to vote counting in the April endorsement convention. Will the dispute extend to the official nominating convention in August? The state House has turned down a Republican-drafted constitutional amendment which would make all university boards and the State Board of Education gubernatorial appointed bodies instead of elected. Speaker Matt Hall didn't bother to talk with Democrats before putting the measure up for a vote. With a two-thirds vote needed to pass, it didn't come close to adoption, but could be revived for the November election. We are just 50 days away from the start of early voting in Michigan. The four races to watch: the 3-way Republican contest for the opportunity to battle Jocelyn Benson for Governor; the 3-way Democratic contest to battle Mike Rogers for the U.S. Senate; and multi-candidate Democratic primaries for Congressional seats based in Lansing and Macomb County. Speculation has begun over who may be in the running for President of Michigan State University in the wake of last week's departure of Kevin Guskiewicz. Will it be a relatively unknown academic, or a high-powered retired politician? There's precedent for both routes…although the highest profile possibility, Gretchen Whitmer, has already announced she is not interested in the gig. Republicans in Congress are starting to push back on Trump outrages – the House passing a measure to stop Trump's Middle East war, Senators stripping the one-billion-dollar subsidy for his ballroom from the DHS budget, and both chambers primed to outlaw efforts to revive the $1.8-billion slush fund for rewarding January 6 rioters and other Trump fans. It's interesting that congressional Republicans only started to show signs of life after candidate filing deadlines. Michigan Congressman Tom Barrett, who no longer faces the possibility of a primary challenge, was one of four Republicans voting this week to end the Iran War.  The political threat to non-compliant Republicans for pushing back against Great Leader comes as doubts about Trump's mental and physical health grow. His third physical examination since taking office coupled with an incomplete post-exam report on what the doctors learned, his reduced work schedule, the cankles and bruising – have increased the speculation. It sure looks like both his political and mental powers are in decline. This week's best political giggle: an AI doctored photo of Senate candidate Mike Rogers, turning his relatively fit 63-year-old body into a modern-day Charles Atlas. This week's disagreement is on Oz The Mentalist and the Ethics of Deception. This episode is about magic and mentalism, but, more than that, it's about the nature of how we form beliefs, determine what is real, what is true, and the social consequences of mass deception. First off: who is Oz the Mentalist? He's the guy you've probably seen in your social media feed, appearing to read the minds of celebrities. He's performed live at the Golden Globes and appeared on Howard Stern, The View, and 60 Minutes. He's the guy who guesses the name of a celebrity's high school crush or their third-grade teacher. Oz doesn't claim to be psychic. His tagline is: “I don't read minds, I read people.” He says he has extraordinary powers of perception. On Joe Rogan's podcast, he compared himself to Jason Bourne—someone who can read micro-expressions, facial tics, and eye movements to uncover whatever is inside your head. That's what separates mentalism from traditional magic. In magic, everyone knows a trick is happening. With mentalism, performers distance themselves from magic entirely. Oz constantly says he doesn't do magic tricks. Instead, he says he uses real psychological tools to access people's thoughts. He's turned those alleged abilities into a self-help empire, with a viral TED Talk titled “How to Read Minds Without Magic” and a New York Times bestselling book, Read Your Mind. I became fascinated with Oz a few months ago. My son is obsessed with magic, so we started watching his videos together and trying to figure out how the tricks worked. And honestly, I was pretty confused. None of the explanations we came up with made much sense. Then I came across a video from an Australian law student named Stevie Baskin, who came out of nowhere and started posting a five-hour viral video debunking Oz and mentalism. So how does a mentalist guess the name of your third-grade teacher? What kind of intense training lets someone peer inside your head and know exactly what you're thinking? It turns out the answer is a lot more straightforward than you might think—and I'm sharing it because it's important context for this conversation. Mentalists use a range of techniques, but one of the most common is something called pre-show. Before the show even begins, the mentalist and the guest agree on the question that will be asked later during the performance. The guest writes down the answer in a notepad. The mentalist might say something like, “Tear it off and put it in your pocket so you can't change your answer when we're live.” But it's not a normal notepad. It's a special one that secretly records the writing on the sheet underneath. When the guest hands the pad back, the mentalist already knows the answer—before the show even starts. From there, the rest is just acting. There are other variations of this too, involving special cell phone apps or surreptitiously designed websites. It kind of bothered me when I learned that. With the TED Talk and the New York Times bestseller, it felt like Oz had moved beyond entertainment and into something closer to misinformation—and monetizing it. Stevie Baskin agreed to come on the show to discuss the ethics of all of this. And to represent the other side, I wanted someone who actually practices mentalism. So I'm very grateful to mentalist, The Amazing Dr. Scott, for joining us. When not performing mentalism, Dr. Scott AKA Dr. Scott Barry Kaufman is a renowned cognitive scientist and professor at Columbia University. The Guests Steve Baskin is a skeptic, rationalist, and YouTube sensation who is in the midst of earning a law degree. Stevie crafted a five-hour YouTube video critiquing metadeceptions and articulating way mentalists like Oz Pearlman present create moral hazards for everyone.
