Our Grand Tour continues with the second half of Dragon Ball GT, which marked the end of the 18-year ‘Toriyama Block' on Fuji TV, and the end of new Dragon Ball stories on TV until Dragon Ball Super nearly 20 years later. The first few episodes here cover the ‘Super Android 17' Arc, which is probably the very worst bit of Dragon Ball ever created, but the ‘Shadow Dragons' Saga has always had more mixed reception, including some vocal defenders. What do Sean and Jonathan make of it? Well, we aren't so hot on that one either, despite some good ideas and individual strong moments throughout. Still, diagnosing what ails Dragon Ball GT continues to make for a fascinating and fun conversation.Enjoy, and come back next week as we return to the dawn of anime with one of the great works by Japan's ‘God of Manga,' Tezuka Osamu, and the 1969 series Dororo! The choice for this week was unique and it was one that was certainly reminiscent of a game for Rick though it feels like he is confused about which one. But the movie is one that has great artwork, sound, and flow but the main protag did rub us the wrong way. We talk about a double recommendation that we received and we honestly both really enjoyed it. The music for Jack played a big part for how the show was but for Rick unless it was the intro or outro it was not noticed. But regardless the story was good and mellow which makes for an easy watch that most would enjoy.Next week's choice is Big Fish and Begonia. Byrd, Matt and Kevin discuss the short lived Fuji TV television series, Agon, the Atomic Dragon. Filmed in 1964 and originally planned to be 26 episodes, this early attempt at a kaiju television series was cut short early and only had four episodes made (which weren't aired until 1968). The show had some familiar faces behind the scenes including staple Toho screenwriter Shinichi Sekizawa and special effects artist Fuminori Ohashi. We'll talk about the original plan for the show, why it was cut short so early, and some of the episodes that went unfilmed. But first, we discuss the most recent synopsis and cast/crew announcement for the Godzilla vs. Kong sequel. Relax and enjoy the show!

Your Lie in April is a Japanese romantic drama manga series written and illustrated by Naoshi Arakawa. It has been adapted into an anime television series and multiple stage productions. The manga was serialized in Kodansha's shōnen manga magazine Monthly Shōnen Magazine from April 2011 to May 2015. The story follows a young pianist named Kо̄sei Arima, who loses the ability to hear the piano after his mother's death and his experiences after he meets violinist Kaori Miyazono. The series originated from a one-shot Arakawa entered in a competition. After serializing another manga series, Arakawa used it as a base for the series, as well as taking some inspiration from other similar works, like Beck and Nodame Cantabile. An anime television series adaptation by A-1 Pictures aired from October 2014 to March 2015 on Fuji TV's Noitamina block and an original video animation (OVA) episode was released in May 2015. A live-action film adaptation of the same name was released in September 2016. The series has also been adapted into a stage play, a light novel, and a musical, which is set to premiere in May 2022. Inuyashiki (いぬやしき) is a Japanese science fiction manga series written and illustrated by Hiroya Oku. It was serialized in Kodansha's seinen manga magazine Evening from January 2014 to July 2017, with its chapters compiled in ten tankōbon volumes. An anime television series adaptation produced by MAPPA aired on Fuji TV's late night programming block Noitamina from October to December 2017. A live-action film adaptation premiered in Japan in April 2018. Inuyashiki Ichiro is an older, friendless man with an uncaring family. One fateful evening in a nearly empty public park, he is struck by an explosion of extraterrestrial origin, and his body is replaced by an incredibly powerful, but still outwardly human, mechanical body. He quickly realizes the extent of his body's powers, and after saving a homeless man being beaten by a pack of teenagers, he decides to dedicate himself to doing good, using his powers to heal those with incurable diseases and fight crime. However, a teenager who was with him at the time of the explosion, Shishigami Hiro, had the same fate as Ichiro, but unlike Inuyashiki, Shishigami becomes a psychopath who goes about using his newfound abilities to murder various people, from classmates that annoy him to innocent families, including young children, just for amusement. His acts of merciless cruelty bring him the attention of the police, who can do nothing to stop him. Hiro becomes the most wanted criminal in the country. Participantes Ana Antar (@anaantar), Isabel Barbosa (@ororoboreal), Ferna (@ferna_mn), Felipe Totoro (@tottoroz), Pedro (@pedrocorujeira)Editor: Diego (@d.ferreira1986)
What a great choice for us to watch by Jeb off of our Discord Server and we were not disappointed in the choice! Especially for it being an original work but even with that being said it is certainly not without its flaws or disappointments. The animation was clean, the sound track was great and it ended with an absolute ending so that there is no leway for a second season. It is something that we both would recommend that you watch at least once. Japan's Top Business Interviews Podcast By Dale Carnegie Training Tokyo, Japan
Frank Foley, founder of the Next Big Thing and former Managing Director of HarperCollins Japan, provides a detailed account of working inside Japan's publishing and media industry through his experience with multinational corporations including HarperCollins and News Corporation. Mr. Foley first got his start as a publishing officer at the Australia Japan Research Centre which led him to land a job at the publishing company HarperCollins Japan. This then led Mr. Foley to work for News Corporation, an American multinational mass media company owned by Rupert Murdoch. At News Corporation, Mr. Foley liaised between the media company and its Japanese partners using his language skills and knowledge of Japanese culture. Mr. Foley was involved in many start-up projects investing in satellite television through News Corporation, sitting in on meetings involving Mr. Murdoch, Soft Bank founder Son Masayoshi and executives of Fuji TV. Working as a country manager for News Broadcasting Japan (later Fox International Channels), Mr. Foley led a team of 40 people after being in charge of massive downsizing. In addition to the task of downsizing which Mr. Foley recalls as a “traumatic experience,” he found it challenging to ensure his employees were highly engaged and working strategically towards a common goal. Being a liaison between head office and Japan was another major challenge to bridge the cultural differences between various parties. When leading the downsizing operation, Mr. Foley learned the importance of communicating the “why” behind the restructuring to maintain transparency and trust with his remaining team members, as well as investing in a strong HR department with empathetic, approachable people. After working in News Corporation for close to 20 years, Mr. Foley discovered he was not a “TV person” but inclined more towards business development and brand management. He then moved on to HIT Entertainment to work on brand business development for Thomas the Tank Engine. On his fascination with branding, Mr. Foley explains: “I realized [what] I really liked about those brands was…the brand itself, not TV specifically, but about the brand and how it fitted with the lifestyle of Japanese people, and you can see the possibilities that go way beyond the actual business that you're in. So I…was very interested in moving from a specific operational business [to one], where you're really working with the brand and trying to figure out what the best strategy for the entire brand is…And Thomas the Tank Engine was that….it's like sky is the limit.” In addition to Thomas, Mr. Foley also worked for Guinness World Records owned by HIT Entertainment. There, Mr. Foley had the challenge of coming up with a new business model for the product as the brand was just entering the Japanese market. Mr. Foley then became interested in building his own business and began providing brand consulting for various consumer products, which led him to become Executive Managing Director at Universal Music's subsidiary company, Bravado where he helped successfully recruited another executive to turn the business around. Mr. Foley then moved back to HarperCollins as the Managing Director leading the distribution of English language books in Japan, such as Harlequin novels and manga in partnership with Softbank. Under his leadership, Mr. Foley sought to have the business operate on a brand driven strategy that focused on growth and the needs of the market rather than following a set template. For example, Mr. Foley used HarperCollins' and his personal global connections to land a publishing deal with soccer player Maya Yoshida to publish his autobiography in English and Japanese. On landing this book deal with a celebrity soccer player, Mr. Foley explains: “if we just went head to head with Shueisha, Kodansha (Japan's top publishing companies), we're not going to get anywhere. We have to think innovatively. We have to think, okay, what can we borrow from our leverage or head office for more international network to allow us to punch above our weight here in Japan.” To create a culture of open communication and high engagement among his employees, Mr. Foley has created opportunities for people to share information and present their ideas. For example, at HarperCollins he has set up a “hall of fame” bulletin board in which different departments would post updated information on what type of projects they are working on. At the end of the month, Mr. Foley would have people from all levels present their projects to the rest of the team to create a sense of ownership and accountability. Mr. Foley also provided equal opportunities for people to work on projects, regardless of their job titles in which an employee in the IT department would be the project lead to publish an Elon Musk book on Tesla. Mr. Foley has also become more mindful of knowing when to step back as he adds: “in more recent years [I've realized it's best to] just get the right people in the job for whatever needs to be done, give them the general direction, the strategy, and check back every once in a while. But for the most part get out of the way and let them do their jobs.” On advice to new leaders coming into Japan, Mr. Foley advises to hire a strong HR person as he experienced firsthand having the right HR person provides security to the company. He also adds to not be afraid of letting people go if that individual is negatively impacting the rest of the team. Secondly, he advises to spend the time to understand Japanese consumers and the local Japanese strategy. Thirdly, he advises on providing equal opportunities for people including women. Mr. Foley's company, Next Big Thing provides consulting in children's consumer brands and educational properties, including Japan market entry, brand strategy and brand management, character and brand licensing, and Japanese-language publishing. More information can be found on Mr. Foley's LinkedIn page. https://www.linkedin.com/in/frankfoleyjapan/
Remember that you can always get in touch with us on our Facebook page, on Twitter, or with our Contact page.Don't forget to check the chapters tab in your podcatcher. This is a thing we're doing now, so keep an eye open for those. We finally wanted to tackle a video game film which is considered an outlier; one which doesn't seem to be that well known outside of the Venn diagram of people who like video games, people who like Japanese horror, and people who have watched the Parasite Eve movie. That's right, we decided to watch the movie version of Parasite Eve from 1997.The following is a reduced version of the full show notes, which you can find here.Content WarningDue to the nature of the movie we talk about in this episode, we'd recommend that you don't listen to this one with little ones around. Whilst we don't go into the detail, this movie does hit you in the feels hard. So be prepared for that, as we talk about the movie. There's also talk about nudity-without-any-actual-nudity (you'll understand why when we get to it) towards the end of the discussion on the film; just to prepare you for that. Please listen responsiblyShow NotesWe're backAND WITH A SPECIAL INTRODUCTION FROM ME: RUSSELL COMPUTECH RODRIGUEZ GENERATION SIX POINT FOUR... indeed. And this time we wanted to cover the movie version of Parasite Eve. One thing to note about this movie is that the relationship it has with the games - as of right now: Parasite Eve, Parasite Eve II, and The 3rd Birthday. The relationship is has is that it's based on a book by Hideaki Sena, and so are the games. Except that the games are more of a "what if" continuation from about the halfway point of the book. And that the movie only has the basic plot from the book.So all three things (book, movie, and games) can be thought of as three separate universes. In fact, we've already covered the book on this website way back in 2017. So we'd recommend giving that post a quick look-see, too.The mitochondria take control and become Instagram influencers - that's the modern day equivalent"- SquidgeThoughts Going InSquidge is a big fan of the action RPG PlayStation title which was made, based on the book. The movie and the game entered pre-production at roughly the same time, and the teams behind both were unaware of each other. Indeed, Hideaki Sena was unaware of the game series until the early 2000s.The production company behind the movie (Fuji TV) started production of the movie in January 1997, and was done 8 weeks later. The entire movie had a total cost of (in 1997 money) $900,000 - for context, Titanic had a budge of $200 million (again in 1997 money).Interestingly, considering that it had a sizable budget, it was only released to Japanese theatres for one week. After which it went to VHS, and was exported to the West - starting the J-Horror craze of the late 90s and early 2000s - alongside Ringu and Ju-On: The Grudge. And it was just under a year after the movie came out that the first game was released. 1998's Parasite Eve for PlayStation must have been in development from shortly before the movie started pre-production, which bears out quite well because a demo was shown off at E3 in 1997.As mentioned above, the movie and the games take two slightly different paths: where the movie is an attempt at retelling the story. The video game was a direct sequel to the book, with the main character (Aya Brea) being the daughter of Mariko Anzai - who is a junior high schooler in both the book and the movie. And Hidekai Sena - the author of the book - didn't know about the games until the early 2000s.The CastBecause it might prove difficult to keep tabs on who is who, here is a list of the most important characters: Dr. Toshiaki Nagashima; he is the protagonist Kiyomi Nagashima; this is Toshiaki's wife Sachiko Asakura; Toshiaki's lab assistant Mariko Anzai; a junior high school girl who needs a kidney transplant Takatsugu Yoshizumi (aka Dr. Curtains) is the surgeon who will perform the kidney transplant Whilst not a character, per se, Mitochondrial Eve will feature heavily in this movie The PlotHere's a 10,000 ft view of the "plot", as we see it: A strange collage and a console boot sound Bad CGI bird, is bad Some science in the form of a lecture, all about Mitochondria Meanwhile it's laundry day A lesson on bacteria, for children who think that bacteria are yucky But they love snails, which are equally as yucky And Mariko flings herself into a swimming pool Dark synth and snail beheading Playboy style candid images of Mitochondria Kiyomi plays "chase me" and a faraway kiss because reasons And Toshiaki forgets their first anniversary Ominous line is ominous Meanwhile there is science happening in the Bat Cave But that's not how you use a microscope Sensei and wise older person stroke's his beard- Squidge Kiyomi drives home "Do you think the Mitochondria have their own agenda" Something terrible happens There's a Bunsen burner and everything STAHP! The science that you're doing is killing her via remote control- Jay Kiyomi has a horrific traffic accident, and it hits you in the feels The transplant committee break every rule in the book "I'll give you the kidney, if you give me her liver" Hollywood cliche 437: it only rains when it's sad Flashback: it's Christmas, yo! "Kiyomi" can be read "Christmas eve", and they meet on Christmas Eve! See the full show notes for a description of how this is possible. Dr. Curtains gets the kidney There's an awful tie Toshiaki goes full mad scientist Resident Evil-like music Mariko is uphappy A bloodied handprint We are the snails There's so much water around in this hospital Tummy bulges "Simba!" in the samples Asakura is possessed by the Mitochondrial goop Shenanigans are afoot Eve is all over the floor Suddenly Kiyomi is back... from the dead Nudity-without-any-actual-nudity Tea and cake... and revelations! Asakura gives a TED talk Western actors with AMAZING. ACTING. TALENT. It starts raining on the stage An old man is set on fire Mariko is flung about by some unspoken force Everyone rushes to the hospital Is it The Blob or is it Eve? Nurse flambé and Morticia Addams'ing their way through a hospital A security system from the 1960s It's curtains for Dr. Curtains"- Jay Roof party! "Not having fun is bad when you're a company selling fun." This is how a game evaluator for Nintendo of America summed up the sequel to the best-selling game of all time. Thus, the true Mario 2 never saw a release outside of Japan and was later dubbed "The Lost Levels". Instead, Nintendo reskinned and revamped an innovative Fuji-TV licensed game with Mario characters and called it good, thus introducing a new cast of characters to the Mario universe, including Shy Guys and of course, Birdo. This week, we talk both versions of Mario 2 and come to some surprising conclusions! The post S1 Ep. 7: Super Mario Bros 2 and The Lost Levels first appeared on Gameography Podcast.

This week's choice was given to us on Twitter by @Tobiyashi067. It was a good revisit for Jack and Rick thought it was pretty good too. Even with the open ending, it was still a good watch in prep for season 2 coming out in January 20212. That all being said, this show does not waste time hooking and you and making you sit on the edge of your seat. It is also one of the few shows that show you the dangers and what is happening right up front leaving nothing to your imagination. But do not worry it's not one that takes away from the enjoyment of the show and instead, it just gets progressively worse for the protagonists. The animation style is also something that we both found enjoyable especially when it comes to the of the characters to help convey the emotion then you couple all that with some great music then you are all set for a thrill of a show that will leave you wanting season 2. As the title suggests this show is weird. And while it does have it's funny moments and a plot that you can follow this show was just weird. It almost felt a bit like Gurren Lagann in terms of the story but it also certainly played on the superhero genre more so from the Power Rangers style of hero. All while wrapping it up with what could be described as a lackluster ending that changed from a superhero-style show to more of a mystery show. Jack can't get past the time travel debacle in this one while Rick is getting a kick out of the puns in it. Overall there 3/4 of the show just really deals with Yuta looking at panties while in the last 1/4 of the series it gives a decent story even though it does not carry it through at least enough to give it a good enough score. Movie • David Mazouz Confirms Joker Is Coming to 'Gotham': The Clown Prince of Crime is coming to the small screen! Gotham fans have long been convinced that Jerome, played by Cameron Monaghan, was the young version of Batman's arch-nemesis, The Joker. However, on numerous occasions, both the cast and crew of Gotham have denied that the character is the Joker. Back in October, EP Bryan Wynbrandt told us that Jerome is simply the show's "homage" to the real Joker, and that his character would lay the groundwork for the evil character to come later. Many thought this meant that Joker would arrive in Bruce Wayne's life after the show had ended, but it now appears that's not the case. While speaking on Discussing Film's podcast this week, Gotham star David Mazouz confirmed that Jerome definitely wasn't the Joker, but went on to explain that the actual Joker was coming soon, and that Jerome's story is vital to the character's arrival. "He’s not the Joker, that’s all I’m saying," Mazouz began. "He’s definitely the inspiration for the Joker and the way that the Joker comes into the show is one of the most brilliant things Gotham has ever done." This helps explain why Jerome has been seen doing things like throwing Joker playing cards and asking to put a smile on someone's face. The character is laying the groundwork for something more terrifying to come. Monaghan added to this story on Twitter after the interview was posted. • GOTHAM RETURNS, March 1, 2018 News from Avengers Tower: • First FULL Deadpool 2 trailer: will reportedly be attached to BLACK PANTHER in theaters on FEB 16, 2018 • FXX To Put out Deadpool animated Series: a 10 episode series has been ordered and will be produced by DONALD GLOVER and it has already been confirmed to be a part of the ADULT animated line up much like Rick & Morty, Archer, etc. In Other News: • READY PLAYER 1: Movie's official release date has moved back 1 day and will open EASTER weekend…. PUN INTENDED • DRAGONBALL SUPER: Appears to be ending for real and heres the scoop: Dragon Ball fans were excited when the franchise made a long-awaited return back in 2015, but it seems that hype has all turned to dismay. New reports from Japan have signaled the end of Dragon Ball Super, and fans are not sure how to react.,Earlier this past week, a newspaper in Japan published an update about Fuji TV’s schedule (via Reddit). The network is shifting its popular Sunday morning anime block to make room for GeGeGe no Kitaro wh

1. Introduction Hi, I’m Kohei! Welcome to our show. As you know, a very large earthquake occurred in Japan on March 11. There were many victims of tsunami and the nuclear power plant has become a subject of argument all over the world. Now I and Yu would like to introduce our interviews about the earthquake. We asked some questions about it to people from abroad. Please listen it! 2.Interview My name is Sam Good and I’m from the United States of America. Q1 Yu: Hi Sam, Because of the earthquake and the nuclear power problem, did your family and friends object to you living in Japan? Sam: That’s a difficult question,,, I think they did object a little bit. Not friends, my friends were OK. My family thought it maybe little dangerous because of radiation in the food but then I explain that Tokyo is actually very far from Fukushima. And they said okay, it’s your decision. Q2 Yu: Are you prepared for earthquake? Sam: Probably not. I don’t think so. Like my house or the office? Yu: Your house. Sam: I’m from San Francisco, and we have many an earthquake in San Francisco also. So I think I’m used to experience in earthquake, but my house in Japan is old and it’s on the second floor. So if there really big earthquake I’m not sure what I would do. So I really hope there is not. There will be very dangerous. Actually there was earthquake last week? Two weeks ago? Kohei: Last week. Sam: It’s pretty big. Like a five point or something? I ran outside, everybody in my apartment building ran outside. It’s very old. So it’s shakes a lot, but I’m leaving in two weeks, so I think I’ll be okay. Yu: You have to prepare food or water. Sam: No, I’m nothing. Water? Yes water but no food. Kohei:OK. Last question. Q3:How different was the news about March 11 in your country and the news in Japan? Sam: Uh…I was not in my country. I was in the Indonesia. When there was theearthquake, I don’t speak Indonesian so I have no idea, but I did watch American news.Uh...It was two things, people very panicked result you know, Japan is ruined. This is oh no, never been Japan again which is totally not true.Uh...and around the world a lot of people who were very worried then, I mean, American and Japan are very good friends and a lot of news casters who really worry about very sad and they said ,you know, and they want to help Japan whose lots of donations lots of company who wants to give money to Japan, so two things that is about it. Yu: What do you think news in Japan? Sam: Oh in Japan that’s good question. You know I wasn’t in Japan. I was in Indonesia and I was in China and I’ll exist home for long time. Because Obirin sudden late, so I get in watch like NHK and Fuji TV and something like that. but I think in back, I try to say I know a lot of people in Japan don’t trust news and they think maybe people relying and I don’t know I’m not Japanese so it’s very difficult to say but it’s nice to be able to watch both American and Japan and choose which I think it’s true. It’s very difficult to say. 3.Conclusion Thank you Sam. Lots of country people care about Japan. There can be an earthquake at any moment and It will takes a long time to recovery, but we shouldn’t give up!
