Now, Youth Climate Save boasts more than 70 chapters in places as far away as India and the U.K. Its members hold weekly Zoom meetings to plan fundraising and other actions youth can take online, as well as an upcoming vegan support group. A sense of urgency animates Butler, who cites research on how a shift to veganism can fight climate change. “That's basically what I've been focusing on, just talking about how if we don't start going vegan, we're not going to have a planet,” she says with sobering, wide-eyed earnestness. At age ten, Genesis became the youngest ever TedX speaker when she gave her inspiring talk on healing the planet through vegan eating. Now, she continues to advocate for animals through speaking engagements, social media, and has even started her own foundation called Genesis For Animals. Plus, she was this year's winner of the Lisa Shapiro Young Animal Activist Award, presented to her by Compassion Over Killing's Erica Meier! Genesis for Animals will be raising money for sanctuaries all around the world, and if they contact me like, “I have this horse and his hoof is broken,” I'll give them money so that they'll be able to take the horse to the vet visit that he needs. I have a website, genesisforanimals.org, and if you look on there you can donate because I'm putting in a lot of my money but there are a lot of sanctuaries that are going to contact me so I'm going to try to get as much money saved to donate. You can also help out with her organization by contacting her at genesisforanimals.org or my Instagram @gensisbutler_.
For 25 years, Animal Outlook has been on the front lines of animal advocacy, speaking truth to power in Washington D.C., where It is based, and beyond. This national nonprofit 501(c)(3) is on a mission: to change the world for animals. Animal Outlook has made headlines in the New York Times and other media, breaking through the mainstream news blackout on animal rights where others have failed. Its focus is on exposing the rampant animal cruelty on factory farms through daring undercover investigations. AO also targets retail food companies, like the campaign to urge Starbucks to offer more vegan options, which has seen some success. Now, after a stellar run of leadership by Erica Meier, a new chapter is starting with new Executive Director Cheryl Leahy. Let's meet Cheryl and find out what's in store next!

In this episode, Kathy continues her conversation with Erica Meier, Director of Compassion over Killing. They discuss: -- COK's investigation of Cook Aquaculture, one of the world's largest factory farms for fish -- what the public doesn't know about fish farming -- Erica's response to the common criticism that cruelty investigators target "the bad apples" of animal agriculture -- progress made in 2019: was it enough to label it "the year of the vegan?" Key Takeaways: -- fish farming causes just as much suffering as the farming of land animals--but on an even vaster scale -- labeling horribly cruel practices as "standard" exempts them from cruelty statutes -- but it shouldn't -- farm sanctuaries have a central role to play in changing the world for animals -- 2019 seemed to be a tipping point: both Kathy and Erica expect stunning and rapid change for animals and the environment in 2020 and beyond.
In this episode, Kathy and Erica Meier, Executive Director of Compassion Over Killing, discuss: -- How factory farms and slaughterhouses are "exploitation machines," harming animals, humans, and the environment -- Food retailers' responsiveness to consumer concerns: we have far more power than we recognize -- the Starbucks campaign as an example of the above -- The likelihood that 2020 will be a game-changing year for animals
