Like many activists, Peter Egan found his cause by chance. When a labrador named Custard collapsed outside the Downton Abbey actor's house, his wife jumped into action, taking the animal to a vet, and eventually the family adopted the dog. For Egan, this moment opened his eyes to the crisis of surplus pets in the UK, and it served as his initiation into advocating for animal rights. Peter Egan joined host Jay Ruderman to discuss the great number of organizations and animal rights causes he supports, from Saving Suffering Strays, to Animals Asia, to Animal Equality UK. They discuss a campaign to protect stray animals in Turkey that Peter is involved with, the ways that animals care for their well being, and the many ways Peter's personal relationships with animals shape and international activism shape each other. Leafleting for animals in a public place is a way to reach out to people, individually and directly, by giving them concise information to take away and read when they have time to contemplate the information. Leafleting is both an easy and a challenging way to extend our message – by challenging, I mean to the leafleter. Why? Because it requires approaching strangers with a brochure the strangers are not asking for and may not wish to receive. We are putting ourselves – and the animals we desperately want people to care about and help– in a position of being rejected, even taunted. In this episode, I discuss the challenges and rewards of leafleting for animals.

Opting to take a holistic approach to care for your dog or any animal versus utilizing conventional medicine might seem too ”woo-woo” for some people. But not for Katya, Jenny, and this week's guest, Dr. Heather O'Leary, a holistic veterinarian with her own practice, TessaLoo Veterinarian Services, in Olivebridge, NY.Dr. Heather joins Katya and Jenny to share stories about how she came to be a holistic veterinarian and the animal who led her down this path. She also shares what practicing homeopathic medicine actually looks like, why it is both similar to and different from regular veterinary care. Noting the differences raises questions about whether or not this approach to animal care is equitable for rescues and shelters, for everyone. And this turns the conversation towards the best ways that dog or cat parents can advocate for their animal's care regardless of what kind of medicinal practice it is. Jenny and Katya ask: What should they look for in a veterinarian? What about when a holistic vet is not available? Dr. Heather answers: It is always a personal decision. You are the expert on your own pet. She'll soon be releasing videos to help more people have access to her type of approach. So if you've been wondering just what a holistic approach for pets looks like, you'll want to listen to this discussion! Though almost everyone claims to love animals many of us still eat them, while most try not to think too much about the terrible treatment humans mete out to our fellow Earthlings. But beyond vegetarianism, veganism, and rescue pet adoption what's a compassionate person to do? Primates of the Animal Protection Party of Canada and their allies have brought this year's Animal Advocacy Camp to Victoria to explore just that. The ACC takes place this April 14th at Camosun College's Gibson Auditorium and features a number of keynote speakers covering a variety of topics. Tayler Zavitz is one of those and she'll present, 'Empathy as Terrorism? The Criminalization of Animal Activism in Canada'. Tayler's a PhD candidate at UVic's Department of Sociology whose research focus is the repression of animal activism and the criminalization of dissent in Canada. She holds degrees in Political Science and Critical Sociology, (with a focus on Critical Animal Studies) and is a current student scholar with the brand new, Animals & Society Research Initiative at the University of Victoria.
