This week I'm joined by writer and academic Christopher Sebastian McJetters. We're talking about what speciesism—the view that certain species should have more rights to freedom and life than others—has to do with racism, sexism, and homophobia. Following our recent episode with Jasmin Singer about help being more vegan-friendly, I was thrilled to hear some of you were inspired to try eating more plant-based. It's a resolution that a lot of people are making in the month of January, as we try on those New Year's resolutions. (There's even a campaign called Veganuary that can help.) But I wanted to have this broader conversation with Christopher about why caring about animal rights is a social justice issue that is related to being anti-racist, anti-sexist, and anti-homophobic. My hope is listening will help deepen your resolve to eat more plant-based for the animals/environment/health, or at least expand your circle of compassion a little wider. I hope you find this conversation helpful, empathy-building, and inspiring. -- Christopher Sebastian is an author, researcher, and lecturer. He writes about food, politics, media, and pop culture. He currently teaches news writing for social media and has guest lectured at Columbia University, Cambridge University, Cornell, and the University of Oxford. Find out more about him at https://www.christophersebastian.info/ -- HOUSEKEEPING NOTE: As you might have noticed, I'm moving the podcast to biweekly for the time being so that I don't burn out and don't have to bug you quite as often about fundraising to support the podcast. I still will sometimes, but not as much. (@rachel-krantz on venmo, icymi :)) Thank you so much to everyone who has supported the podcast thus far, and I promise that even though it'll be slightly less frequent, the quality will hopefully be that much better.
In honor of my fellow vegans and vegetarians getting shit from their families this Thursday (and also in honor of World Vegan Month), I wanted to do an episode to help those wanting to lean in a more plant-based direction. This episode was filled with vegan hacks, recs, tips, and heartfelt feelings. I've been vegan for seven years now, and one of my first vegan friends was podcaster, activist, and author Jasmin Singer. She became one of my closest people because she's a compassionate, generous powerhouse and sister from another Jewish mister. Jasmin is the author of The Veg News Guide to Being a Fabulous Vegan, an excellent place to start if you want to learn more about everything we talked about in this episode. She's also the author of Always Too Much and Never Enough: A Memoir, and the editor of Antiracism in Animal Advocacy. She's also the co-host and creator of Our Hen House, an excellent podcast that centers around animal rights. I hope this conversation is helpful to you, no matter where you are on your journey. Keep an open mind, and you might just make a new best friend too. -- Help Existing is listener supported...theoretically. Please throw a dollar in the hat through my Venmo, @rachel-krantz, if you can.

In today's pod-meal, Myq returns to Faucet-ing from a lengthy time between Faucets. Thank you for your patience! He discusses with Rini (and Stuffles) all (or most) of the ensuing events in life between the last Faucet pod and now, including trips to Rochester, Buffalo, Kansas City, Champaign IL, Portland OR, Seattle, DC, Virginia, and Colorado, where Myq partially ruptured his Achilles' tendon! (You know the song, "I Left My Heart in San Francisco"? Well, I left maybe part of my tendon in Boulder.) AND ALSO, today is Myq and Rini's 6th anniversary. So that comes up as well. All that and probably more! Please enjoy, as you wish. Much love to you and yours and all.

Mariann (@marisul) is Co-host with previous guest Jasmin Singer of the Our Hen House podcast and host of the Animal Law Podcast. She is a lawyer, lecturer, teacher and animal rights activist. In Sentientist Conversations we talk about the two most important questions: “what's real?” & “what matters?” Sentientism is "evidence, reason & compassion for all sentient beings." The video of our conversation is here on the Sentientism YouTube. We discuss: 0:00 Welcome 1:40 Mariann's Intro. An Animal life - Working as a lawyer in New York - Adopting a dog on impulse then waking up to animal issue - "He'd stopped eating meat because of the way animals were treated - and t was just like 'boom!'" - Most people know there's a problem - they just avoid thinking about it - Joining (later chairing) the Animal Law Committee of the NY bar - Connecting animal advocacy organisations - Meeting Jasmin Singer & starting Our Hen House 6:02 What's Real? - Growing up Catholic - "I had faith but it was never a burden for me" - Not really being religious any more... "but those voices never really go away" - As a teenager "It just started to seem unlikely" - Getting comfortable with "I don't know" - Ethics & evidence as reasons for abandoning supernatural worldviews - The tumult of Catholic college in 1968. From dressing for dinner & attending church to "men with beards living in the dorms" - "Boom - the entire world changed - everyone was questioning everything" - Leaning towards atheism but not being certain - "We're connected to each other in ways we don't understand" - Non-sentient living things - Woo! vs. naturalistic views of sentience & consciousness - Finding awe in a naturalistic worldview 18:01 What Matters? - "It's all about suffering"... and about pleasure too - Suffering matters... "It's so obvious" - "What kind of god - would create this planet - where animals eat each other" - Morality as compliance vs. concern for suffering/flourishing - Reading Peter Singer. He wrote down what many were already feeling - "Why did I get there and everybody doesn't get there?" - "I don't think it's a philosophical problem... it's a psychological problem" - "How can you not sound self-righteous when you're right?" - "I don't understand why this is this big moral journey" - The "all we have to do is tell everybody" stage of activism - The family & social challenges of going vegan - The risks of motivated reasoning even within a naturalistic worldview 28:48 The Future - Balancing despair & hope with the help of Our Hen House - Things have shifted. "It's almost as if we have won the moral argument already." ... and much more. Full notes on YouTube or Sentientism.info. On today's pod-meal, Myq discusses a fun non-pod-meal that he had with his friend Jasmin Singer, a fun email exchange he had with his friend Gus, and a number of other letters combined into words combined into sentences and probably some non-sentences, and even some non-words I bet! All fun though. Please enjoy as much of the All-Fun as you want to and can, thank you. Figs are bananas!
Hi Plant Friends and welcome to another episode of the PBN Podcast. I am your host Robbie Lockie. On this weeks episode we meet the bubbly and colourful vegan Jasmin Singer. At the age of twenty-four, Jasmin Singer turned to veganism after watching a film about factory farming. Learning about the horrors of the dairy and egg production led her to incorporate animal rights into her LGBTQ+ and feminist activism. Jasmin then began volunteering at PETA's headquarters in Norfolk, Virginia, and began steering her career toward animal rights activism. As well as being a leading expert, Jasmin Singer is now a hugely visible presence within the vegan community. She is a coveted speaker on topics including radical body positivity, personal narrative as a means of social justice, and how to change the world for animals. She is also the author of The VegNews Guide to Being a Fabulous Vegan and Always Too Much and Never Enough: A Memoir. Along with her co-host Mariann Sullivan, Jasmin and her team continue to “change the world for animals” on the long-running, award-winning podcast, Our Hen House. I was fortunate to feature on one of their episodes, I will link it down in the show notes. Jasmin's incredible contribution to animal rights does not stop there. She is the former Senior Editor for VegNews Magazine and the longtime love columnist and celebrity interviewer. In 2020, Jasmin had the enviable job of interviewing actor Joaquin Phoenix, who had used his prominence to not only effectively veganize the menu at the Academy Awards, but also treat his acceptance speech as a way of sharing his concerns for animal rights issues. You may well have seen Jasmin appearing in various documentaries such as The Ghosts In Our Machine and Vegucated. She has also contributed to many anthologies such as Running Eating Thinking; Defiant Daughters; Voices for Animal Liberation; Queer & Trans Voices; and Circles of Compassion. As an actor, Jasmin starred in the film The Bra Mitzvah and has appeared in television commercials. She holds a BFA in Acting from Pace University, and is a certified holistic health counsellor. Jasmin is a long-time activist across many realms, including animal activism, LGBTQ activism, and antiracism. As always if you love this episode please don't forget to comment, like and share and if you are on Apple Podcasts please do leave us a review it really helps get the message out there. Do you eat them? Like . . . even the skin of a kiwi?
Join us this week as we chat about how dangerous deprivation can be when it comes to building a healthy lifestyle and how detrimental the idea of a “cheat day” is to having a positive mindset and developing habits that encourage moderation. Henny apologizes for the podcast editing mishap that occurred in last week’s episode, and Sandy talks about a new memoir she’s reading: Jasmin Singer’s Always Too Much and Never Enough. Finally, we chuckle about how soon we start thinking about what we’re going to eat for our next meal (Hint: It’s probably WAY too soon)! Do you have foods that you truly think you “can’t” have?

Jasmin Singer, author of the memoir Always Too Much and Never Enough, was vegan long before she was thin. She struggled for thirty years with her weight and, more importantly, a destructive relationship with food. Even after dedicating herself professionally and personally to compassion for animals, she was still missing compassion for herself. She says it was only after she turned her objective from vanity to self-care, and traded vegan snacks for juice fasts, that she was able to get to the root of her food addiction, lose 100 pounds, and finally heal her spirit. Jasmin is the co-host of multi-award-winning podcast Our Hen House, the digital director of VegNews, and a TEDx speaker who wants you to know that compassion is the only path to living in our authentic selves. She joins Alexandra and Dotsie to share how she broke through her emotional eating, why we should all strive to see ourselves through our grandmothers’ eyes, and why she is unapologetic about not eating anyone who has a mother. While telling her stereotype-defying story, Jasmin will teach you how to speak a little more nicely to yourself and drop your toxic habits for the ultimate freedom. What we discuss in this episode: - How our parents can unintentionally warp our relationship with food and why we turn to toxic habits to fill emotional voids - The realization that pushed Jasmin from vegetarianism to veganism, why communities are important for your transition, and Jasmin’s advice for finding a “vegan family” of your own - Unpacking food addiction and why what we consume must align with our authentic selves - Veganism is not a diet! Jasmin shares how she takes the guesswork out of people understanding veganism and how the show Explained gave her hope that people are leaning into plants - How Fat, Sick, & Nearly Dead and Eat to Live changed Jasmin’s life after an eyeopening appointment with her doctor - What happens to your worldview when you drop 100 pounds? How people reacted to Jasmin’s weight loss and why it made her angry - Changing your mindset from vanity to self-care: Jasmin’s TEDx Talk, and why we need to try to see ourselves the way our grandmothers see us - How juice fasting or a similar change in routine can help break food addiction - The one investment Jasmin recommends if you think you don’t have time to be vegan - Connect with Jasmin Singer on Instagram at @jasminsingerauthor, on Twitter at @jasmin_singer, and on her website at JasminSinger.com and check out her interview with Dotsie on Our Hen House Connect with Switch4Good https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCQ2toqAmlQpwR1HDF_KKfGg https://www.facebook.com/Switch4Good/ https://www.instagram.com/switch4good/ https://twitter.com/SwitchForGood switch4good.org
In celebration of Hanukah, today's super special bonus episode weaves in one of our favorite chats with the Vegan Mos' Michael Suchman, who joined Jasmin Singer way back on episode 2 of the Teaching Jasmin How to Cook Vegan podcast to create the perfect Christmas meal (no matter what you celebrate).
This pod is recorded from the Veg News Headquarters in West Hollywood. I sit down with the very smart and very present Jasmin Singer. A veteran journalist and author (her book Always Too Much and Never Enough is out now), Jasmin is the Senior Editor at the leading vegan publication, Veg News. In our discussion, Jasmin highlights the benefits of a compassionate life and how changing how she sees herself and, thus, how she sees the world created a life altering and life affirming shift for her. In the end, can we be happy? We get in to this, too! Listen in! To watch our interview or for more information, visit http://ElysabethAlfano.com .
This week The ChickPeeps have an honest, open conversation about what it's like to balance one's relationship with food with one's ethical values and how both recovery and veganism have impacted their lives. Momo and Evy are joined by vegan fitness coach and self love advocate, the fearless Bianca Taylor, who recounts her journey from struggling with anorexia to truly loving and celebrating her body. Later on, we interview the incredible Jasmin Singer, senior editor of Vegnews and author of the memoir Always Too Much and Never Enough, who shares her story of developing a binge eating disorder and how she transformed her relationship with food from self-abuse to self care. Also, on this episode… ‘You can't eat that, can you?' The important distinction between ‘can't and ‘won't'. Going vegan mindfully after an eating disorder. Bianca discusses being a personal trainer and how she helps people in the midst of an ED. ‘Good' vs. ‘bad' foods - how do we not backslide into this mentality of categorising foods as a vegan. Bianca and Momo share how their lives have expanded since they chose the path of self-love. Jasmin discusses the journey from food as an enemy, to food as a friend, to somewhere in between. ‘It wasn't until I was well into my 30s that I realised that food can actually be something that not only is a direct representation of who we wanna be and what our world view is but also something that can fill us and allow us to really sit more comfortably in our authenticity.' The universal feeling of not being enough. Guilt and shame. How to deal with these emotions surrounding food when we slip up as new vegans. How to talk about veganism with people who've been through an eating disorder. Switching your focus from vanity to self care. ‘That's when food was no longer what it had been for me in the 80s, which was a vehicle for changing; it was a vehicle for being in line with who I wanted to be.' Letting go of an eating disorder. Jasmin and Evy discuss whether or not true recovery is possible. How to deal with a perfectionist mindset when it comes to diet. Body positivity and representation in the vegan community. Links: Check out Bianca's website. Follow Bianca on Youtube, Instagram and Facebook. Learn more about Jasmin Singer. “I found that I was being betrayed by the food industry…and it was only as I started to pull that apart and what that meant did I realize all of the ways I had also been betraying myself.”Jasmin SingerThe facts of our experiences are different. But so many of the emotions we experience along our journeys are remarkably similar.Meet Jasmin Singer. As a kid, Jasmin was an outcast. Fat and persistently bullied, she was hopelessly drawn to foods that only fueled the depression and confused disposition incited by her chaotic upbringing.Encouraged by her gorgeous mother to trade in her Oreos for pre-packaged Weight Watchers brownies resulted in an endless rotation of Nutri-System appointments and Jenny Craig weigh-ins that ultimately did little to rectify her love of cheddar, resolve her body image issues or soothe the pain of childhood trauma. The grub always won. Because food offered Jasmin something she found nowhere else. She basked in the safe reassurance of mealtimes, in the calm friendship she shared with snacks. She lived for the sweet tingling of a vanilla shake as it slid down her throat, filling up her stomach and, more importantly, her heart. This is a long way of saying that Jasmin was, in fact, addicted to food – physically and emotionally. And no wonder. The foods she regularly ate growing up – Cheez-Its, Lunchables, Twinkies, Big Macs – were literally designed to activate the pleasure centers in her brain, making her want more and more and more.A growing awareness of the horrors of industrialized animal agriculture led to Jasmin's emerging sense of just how profoundly her culinary proclivities had betrayed her. So at 19, she became a vegetarian. Later, she went entirely vegan, stepping into a lifelong passion for animal rights advocacy. Nonetheless, the skinny vegan trope eluded her. Instead, she continued to gain weight due to her continuing love affair with greasy rich foods.Just because it's vegan doesn't mean it's healthy. In the firm grips of her hopeless addiction, Jamin became resigned to the deep sense of shame that accompanied her every minute of every day, further isolating her in a bottomless pit of desperation and loneliness that drove an isolating wedge between her and the world. From the extra pounds and unrelenting bullies that left her eating lunch alone in a bathroom stall at school to the low self-esteem that rendered her physically and emotionally vulnerable to abuse, her struggle with weight came to define every aspect of her life. And then one day, she decided to make a change…By committing to monthly juice fasts and a plant-based diet comprised of whole, unprocessed foods, Jasmin lost almost a hundred pounds, gained an understanding of her destructive relationship with food, and finally realized what it means to be truly full.Today, Jasmin is the co-founder and executive director of Our Hen House, a nonprofit multimedia hub working to change the world for animals. She also serves up co-host duties on the popular Our Hen House Podcast, produces an online magazine and video content and travels extensively to publicly speak on the subjects of veganism and social justice. As laid bare in her brave and intensely vivid coming-of-age memoir, Always Too Much And Never Enough*, it's a story you might be surprised to learn really isn't about weight loss. Rather, See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
