Now on to today's show: Many of you know that I am so fortunate to have this incredible relationship with The Restaurant Association of Metropolitan Washington aka RAMW. Over the years their former President, Kathy Hollinger, has joined me on this show (and F&TB) to talk us through what is happening in the Industry — staff shortages, Initiative 77, restaurant weeks, the pandemic insanity — RAMW is a lifeline not just for their members in the Industry, but for diners and consumers alike. Well, now there is a new sheriff in town! Actually, a new CEO, Shawn Townsend who you may remember as the inaugural Director of the Mayor's Office of Nightlife and Culture, Shawn is now head of the RAMW and he has a lot to share. Today we are going to discuss how RAMW advocates for and promotes the vitality of the capital region's hospitality industry, what is going on with the tipped-credit, The RAMMYS, and the recent launch of Food Jobs DC. We had so much to discuss ... Quotes "Our aim is to promote transparency and ensure clarity regarding fees, so that no one is left puzzled by unexpected charges on the final bill" - Shawn Townsend "Our students feel the excitement when we expose them to pro star competitions and restaurant kitchen tours. It's a truly invigorating and inspiring experience for them.""- Shawn Townsend "Restaurant week provides a unique chance for people to indulge in a culinary experience tailored to their comfort level, both in terms of price and enjoyment." - Nycci Nellis Featured Guest Shawn Townsend Facebook & Instagram Personal -https://www.facebook.com/shawnjtownsend Business:https://www.facebook.com/ramwdc/ Personal:https://www.instagram.com/shawnjtownsend Business:https://www.instagram.com/ramwdc/ Twitter: Personal:https://www.twitter.com/shawnjtownsend Business:  https://twitter.com/ramwdc Chapters 00:00 Intro 09:34 Demystifying Minimum Wage Laws for Restaurant Servers 11:46 Navigating Service Charges in the Restaurant Industry 16:03 Restaurant Relief Package Proposed by DC Council Member 17:08 Understanding the Value of Advertising for Restaurants 19:02 Blending Service Charges and Traditional Sales for Success" 20:35 Accelerating Minimum Wage Increases for Restaurant Workers 22:55 Real Estate Boom Exacerbates Staffing Shortages 27:21 Igniting Career Aspirations through an Inspiring Culinary Program 35:53 Conquering Restaurant Fear: Exploring New Cuisine Affordably 37:34 Honoring Restaurant Employees: The Industry's Grammy Awards 42:30 Diversity Clash: James Beard and Michelin Perspectives 50:52 Outro Produced by Heartcast Media http://www.heartcastmedia.com

This new book traces the lives of Israeli Jews and Palestinian Arabs in Israel and Palestine who have dedicated their lives to building peaceful relations among the two peoples and between individual people who seek to live in peace and harmony with one another. These people have acted courageously and consistently in their work for peace. In this book, the author profiles the lives, thoughts, feelings, and actions of six important peacebuilders — men and women, secular and religious, 3 Jewish Israelis: Rabbi Michael Melchior, Professor Galia Golan, and Mrs. Hadassah Froman, and 3 Palestinian Arabs: Professor Mohammed Dajani, Ms. Huda Abuarquob, and Bishop Munib Younan. The reader learns about their visions for peace and their activities to bring their ideas to fruition in the real world of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Too many people have given up on peace. In contrast, the people in this book persevere for peace, thus keeping a flicker of hope alive for Israelis and Palestinians who live in the same land for people everywhere who continue to yearn for a peace agreement to be reached in the region.  Co-sponsored by: Alliance for Middle East Peace (ALLMEP) is a coalition of over 170 organizations—and tens of thousands of Palestinians and Israelis—building people-to-people cooperation, coexistence, equality, shared society, mutual understanding, and peace among their communities. When we take care of our leaders and their mental health, we're all able to show up as our best selves--at work and at home. As leaders in human resources, we can do this by unlocking potential by supporting them to growth their mental health skills - in empathy, leadership, and coping with challenges. This is important because organizations that are viewed as highly empathetic have employees that are more likely to positively talk about their company to friends, peers, and families. And organizations that truly focus on culture are twice as likely to retain their employees. We're in a world of change, with the great resignation and the lesser-talked about great retirement. Both are impacting the workplace in ways we couldn't have predicted. This week on the podcast, I'm happy to share this and more with you from Dr. Alexander Alonso, the Society for Human Resource Management's (SHRM) Chief Knowledge Cfficer. While anti-Semites and Islamophobes often speak as if our faiths have been frozen in ice (and primitive thinking) for many centuries, the fact is that Jews and Muslims belong to living, breathing, stimulating faiths. On February 9, 2022, JIDS and the Rumi Forum jointly presented a dialogue that presents some of the exciting ideas and personalities that have emerged within the past century to enrich our faiths. Jews and Muslims belong to living, breathing, and stimulating faiths. On this panel, we discovered some of their inspiring modern thinkers together. We heard presentations about two modern Jewish thinkers: Rami Shapiro, who has brought a passion for various eastern faiths into his study of Judaism, and Menachem Mendel Schneerson (aka the Lubavitcher Rebbe), whose ideas sparked the rapidly growing Chabad Movement within Judaism. We will also hear presentations about two modern Muslim thinkers: Said Nursi, whose commentary of the Qur'an inspired a renewed way of engaging with the modern age; and Muhammad Iqbal, who had a remarkable impact on the intellectual and cultural reconstruction of Islam in South Asia and beyond. These presentations were given, respectively, by four scholars: Herb Levy, Rabbi Lee Weissman, Dr. Zeki Saritoprak, and Dr. Marcia Hermansen. Rumi Forum and JIDS present this event as a collaborating partner of the Interfaith Council of Metropolitan Washington (IFCMW) during the 3rd Annual World Interfaith Harmony Week in the DMV. We are glad that this panel discussion coincides with the annual worldwide observance during the month of February 2022.

What does that mean for congestion? How do we ensure that they benefit from the investments this region is making in transit and economic development? This episode is all about the strategy to plan more housing, more communities, near high-capacity transit.

In this episode we speak with Marcus Johnson.  Marcus is an independent Billboard-ranked musician and NAACP Image Award-nominated jazz keyboardist and pianist. He is also the CEO and Founder of Flo Brands, LLC and more recently Flo Wine, LLC. Marcus has combined an eminently successful musical career with his love of wine by marrying the two in a unique endeavor.   Over the last decade, Marcus Johnson has released 15 successful studio albums.  On Pandora, Marcus receives 5.1 million spins per year with 2,000 new stations added each month, and his music receives a 74% “thumbs ups” rating verses an average of 56%.  Johnson is the owner of a music label, Three Keys Music, and has emerged as one of the young lions of the “DIY” music world.  His unique self-taught style of piano play has earned him distinction among his peers, praise from the media and accolades across the music industry.  Marcus is on the cutting edge of ‘Euro Jazz' having formed JURIS, a musical collaboration with acclaimed Parisian DJ and producer Young Pulse. The duo quickly developed a name within the international music community, enjoying large-scale performances and preparing a Q3 release of their latest project entitled “Eiffel Tower.” Johnson's FLO Brands, LLC,tm is aptly titledFor the Love Of ; LLC. ™ FLO began as a musical publishing, production, and lifestyle branding company to house all of Johnson's musical and entrepreneurial ventures.  However the scope and reach of the company has expanded delving into winemaking, sourcing grapes and production in California.  FLO Brands launched FLO Wines, LLC in March 2012.  FLO Wine is capturing the taste buds of wine-lovers from California to South Carolina. To date retail partners  in various states include Costco, Wal-Mart, Target, Whole Foods, Giant, Harris Teeter, Renaissance Hotels, Kroger, Aloft Hotels, Four Seasons Hotel Washington, DC, Farm Fresh, and Total Wine. These two albums led to Johnson signing with N2K Encoded Music with whom he released several CDs until the label was sold in 1998. Johnson's success caught the attention of Black Entertainment Television (BET) founder and businessman Robert L. Johnson who invested in Marcus and his newfound company, Marimelj Entertainment Group (MEG).  Under their partnership, MEG's label, Three Keys Music based in the Washington, DC metro area, established its own full service recording studio, Studio 8121; and two music publishing companies, Marimelj Music Publishing and Three Keys Music Publishing.  Marcus was responsible for releasing and producing CDs on the Three Keys label for national jazz artists Michael Lington, Jaared Arosemena, Bobby Lyle, Nick Colionne, R&B singer, Alyson Williams and neo-soul songstress Yahzarah and smooth jazz Saxophonists Phillip Martin and Brian Lenair.  While producing music for the aforementioned artists, Marcus also released several critically acclaimed albums:Inter Alia,Chocolate CityGroovin';Coming Back Around;Urban Groove,In Person: Live at Blues Alley,Just Doing What I Do,Smooth Jazz Christmas andIn Concert for a Cause, all charting at Top 20 or more on Billboard's Contemporary Jazz Charts.  Marcus has released 15 Billboard-charted CDs. He has the distinction of having his groundbreaking 2008 Billboard Top 20 Contemporary Jazz FLO (For the Love Of) CDs which consisted of three distinct albums: FLO Chill,FLO Romance andFLO Standards ,  all charting Top 10 on Billboard Contemporary Jazz Charts simultaneously.  Johnson's previous solo 2007 release, The Phoenix, was widely lauded by jazz critics and aficionados alike and like Johnson's previous CDs, it peaked in the Top 20 of Billboard's Contemporary Jazz charts. Johnson's next Top 20 Contemporary jazz releases, the unique and multi-facetedPoetically Justified (2009) andThis Is How I Rock (2011) solidified Marcus Johnson as heir apparent to the George Duke and Herbie Hancock style of funky urban groove music.  Creatively, Johnson continues to evolve as an artist. With the release of his 2012FLO: Holiday  CD and the ongoing collaboration with famed Parisian Producer DJ Pulse – as the musical duo “Juris” – he has managed to maintain his traditional jazz roots, while also remaining on the forefront of the expanding “Euro Jazz” movement. His music continues to enforce and define his musical legacy as a “jazz movement for all people”.    Johnson is also evolving as an innovative wine expert.
