Could Bird Flu Be the Next Pandemic?

Seems like the human race never learns. We just got through one massive, global pandemic that killed many millions of people. Now, fears surrounding Bird Flu are making headlines like: Experts Warn of Bird Flu Pandemic As Signals of Mutation Mount. That from ScienceAlert. SciTechDaily's headline reads: Alarming Mutation in H5N1 Virus Raises Pandemic Red Flags. The article goes on to say: "A recent study published in Science and funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has found that a single alteration in a protein on the surface of the highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 virus—currently present in U.S. dairy cows—could significantly increase its potential for human-to-human transmission." And, now, the USDA is going be testing cow's milk! NBC News reports: "The mandate targeting bulk milk transporters and dairy processors is meant to help identify herds that have caught the virus, which has spread among livestock." So, what happens when they find Bird Flu? They've already killed millions of exposed chickens by baking them to death in a cruel mass-killing process called Ventilation Shutdown!  Are they going to bake the cows to death too? Would it be too crazy to suggest that humans should just stop torturing and killing 92 BILLION ANIMALS for food every year in dangerously cramped industrial factory farming systems? Here to discuss is Free From Harm's Robert Grillo and Amber Canavan, PETA's Vegan Campaigns Project Manager with UnchainedTV host Jane Velez-Mitchell.

Their mission is to reinvent humanity's broken relationship with animals by getting people to understand that it is morally wrong to use, abuse and kill animals for food, fashion, entertainment or experimentation. Often wearing matching pink sweatshirts, Animal Rising members risk arrest and even their lives to confront, in a nonviolent way, people who are participating in animal exploitation. EMERGENCY APPEAL: Help one amazing couple save more than 100 chimpanzees. Donate here: https://www.liberiachimpanzeerescue.org/donate.html Now watch as Jenny and Dr. Jim Desmond tell their harrowing story LIVE. In 2015, a group of animal protection groups asked the Desmonds to go to Liberia to save the lives of 66 chimpanzees who the NY Blood Center abandoned on six islands after using them in biomedical research. The Desmonds planned to spend about a month in Liberia putting systems in place and finding locals to take over their care, but they were unable to leave. Soon, government authorities began bringing them orphaned baby chimps who were victims of the bushmeat and exotic pet trades. No one else in Liberia had the experience or expertise to take care of them. It has been almost ten years, and the Desmonds now have about 115 chimps in their care and dozens of employees from neighboring villages. They've built the first phase of a permanent sanctuary in the forest. They are very eager to embark on phase 2, which would enable the adult chimps to get out of their enclosures and spend time in the forest, but they can't even consider that because they don't have enough money to cover their operating expenses. The fantastic three-part BBC series about the Desmonds' conservation and rescue work, Baby Chimp Rescue, led to donations that enabled them to operate and complete phase 1, but that infusion has ended. Because they are in Liberia and do not have a network of supporters abroad, they are not raising the amount of money they need to function, much less build out the sanctuary and create an endowment. Says TheirTurn founder Donny Moss, Having visited them twice while working on the campaign to compel the NY Blood Center for pay for the care of the chimps they abandoned, I have seen the extraordinary work they do in the most challenging of environments. And, as one of the few Americans who has been there, I feel an obligation to help them and the chimps. Their charity, Liberia Chimpanzee Rescue & Protection, is registered in the U.S. VISIT: https://www.liberiachimpanzeerescue.org/ - PLEASE HELP! Today we are celebrating our 200th Episode with the return of a special friend of the podcast, Judge Tanya Acker. Acker serves as one of three judges on Amazon Freevee's Tribunal Justice, created by Judge Judy Sheindlin. Acker also hosts "The Tanya Acker Show" podcast on iTunes, Google Play, Spotify, Overcast, and Pocketcasts. Most recently, Acker was a judge on the Emmy-nominated series, "Hot Bench." Acker is also the author of "Make Your Case: Finding Your Win in Civil Court," published by Diversion Books. In the book, Acker provides readers with curated, targeted information about what people want to know: what happens during court proceedings and why, how to best prepare for it — and how to avoid court entirely and find out if there is a better way. Acker is an experienced civil litigator who has represented a wide array of clients, from major automobile manufacturers in high-stakes product liability litigation to media companies in hotly contested trade secret disputes. She has been a featured commentator on "Good Morning America," "The View," "Entertainment Tonight," "Wendy Williams," "The Talk," "Inside Edition," "Banfield," "The O'Reilly Factor," "Larry King Live," "CNN Reports," "Anderson Cooper 360," "Issues with Jane Velez Mitchell," "Extra," "Your World With Neil Cavuto," "HLN's Special Report," "CNBC Reports," Great Britain's "GMTV" and Sky News, and various other broadcasts. She also guest co-hosted CNBC's "Power Lunch," and "C Magazine" included her in an election season profile on noteworthy California women in politics. Acker also has contributed to the Huffington Post and served as a Temporary Judge in the Los Angeles County Superior Court Temporary Judge Program. While a student at Yale Law School, Acker represented low-income women in family law cases and served as a teaching assistant in Constitutional Law and Civil Procedure courses. She also worked at the Office of White House Counsel, the Civil Rights Division in the United States Department of Justice and the private law firms Irell & Manella, O'Melveny & Myers and Williams & Connolly. At Williams & Connolly, she assisted President Clinton's personal lawyers with press interviews, worked on the preparation of Congressional testimony for pending product liability legislation and researched First Amendment issues. After graduating from Yale, Acker served as a judicial law clerk to the Honorable Dorothy Wright Nelson on the Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. After her clerkship, the Office of the Solicitor General in the U.S. Department of Justice awarded Acker a Bristow Fellowship. While working as a Bristow Fellow, Acker drafted Supreme Court briefs and helped prepare the Solicitor General for oral argument before the High Court. Among the cases on which Acker worked was Clinton v Jones, where she assisted both the Solicitor General and President Clinton's personal attorneys in preparing for oral argument. In private practice, Acker's legal work spanned a broad variety of matters, from civil litigation involving public and private entities, to various constitutional cases, to providing constitutional cases, to the provision of business counseling and advice. She also maintained a commitment to pro bono work, receiving the ACLU's First Amendment Award for her successful representation of a group of homeless individuals against the City of Santa Barbara. Acker later worked in entertainment industry outreach for the Kerry/Edwards presidential campaign and as Deputy Campaign Manager for the Los Angeles mayoral campaign of City Councilman Bernard C. Parks. After that, she worked as the General Counsel of a company that manufactured emissions control products. Acker received her B.A. degree at Howard University in 1992, where she graduated summa cum laude and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. She was awarded a Luard Scholarship for study at St. Anne's College at Oxford University and served there as the co-editor-in-chief of the Oxford University Women's Magazine. At Yale Law School, she was awarded an Earl Warren Scholarship by the NAACP and a Coker Fellowship by the Yale faculty. Acker maintains an active involvement in various philanthropic, civic and business organizations. A volunteer with Love Takes Root, she has traveled to Haiti to work in a clinic and orphanage founded by that organization. She is a member of the Beverly Hills West (CA) chapter of The Links, Incorporated, and additionally serves on the boards of Public Counsel, the Western Justice Center, the Boy Scouts of America (the National and Western Los Angeles County Council Boards); PacWest Bancorp; and as trustee of the Pacific Battleship Center, which operates the Battleship USS Iowa Museum. PETA's founder and leader Ingrid Newkirk is celebrating her 75th birthday! And, UnchainedTV's Jane Velez-Mitchell is thrilled and honored to get to speak with Ingrid for the hour! Learn about Ingrid's fascinating life, growing up in India and then, somehow, becoming an animal protection officer in the United States. How much progress has been achieved since People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals was started back in 1980? A lot! As PETA points out, “At that time, researchers were experimenting on chimpanzees in squalid laboratories, pigs were being slammed into walls in car-crash tests, and dogs were being shot in military exercises. But  PETA's landmark victories for animals, including the first-ever police raid on a laboratory and convictions for cruelty to animals in the meat industry—as well as the media attention that has accompanied them—have led to a huge change in public attitudes, and the victories keep coming.    “These days, the demand for vegan food has skyrocketed, Ringling Bros. has reinvented itself as a stunning animal-free circus, nearly every major fashion brand has gone fur-free, and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration is no longer required to mandate archaic and cruel animal tests for new drugs. PETA's work continues, with campaigns that include calling on fashion houses to stop selling reptile skins, pushing for lifesaving reforms in the horse racing industry, and fighting the monkey-to-laboratory pipeline. Now, Ingrid would like you to celebrate her birthday by going to https://www.peta.org/75 and seeing the 75 easy ways you can speak up for animals!

Is there a multi-million dollar misinformation campaign to stop the plant-based food movement in its tracks? The Freedom Food Alliance, led by renowned digital media expert Robbie Lockie, has just released a detailed report which makes that case. Harvesting Denial, Distractions and Deception: Understanding Animal Agriculture's Disinformation Strategies and Exploring Solutions argues that the meat industry - though companies, lobbyists, trade groups, checkoff programs, influencers and so-called experts and industry-backed academics - is waging a full-scale misinformation and disinformation campaign against vegan products and the plant-based movement in general. This is happening at our own peril, as the climate crisis worsens and advertiser-based mainstream media basically ignores one of the biggest causes: animal agriculture. The media runs story after story attacking plant-based meat alternatives as processed while failing to mention that processed meat is officially cancer-causing, according to the World Health Organization. When the World Bank recently called for governments to shift away from subsidizing meat and dairy and embrace alternatives proteins, that urgent recommendation was ignored by mainstream media. So, what can we do to save ourselves, animals and the planet? Let's find out from Robbie Lockie, one of the founders of Plant Based News whose new campaign is getting the real story out to the world before it's too late. Animal Rising has made global headlines with its risk-taking actions including: sending hundreds of protesters to disrupt England's most famous horse race, rescuing lambs from the estate of the King of England and occupying massive dairy factories. In this interview, UnchainedTV's Jane Velez-Mitchell talks to Animal Rising Co-Director Ben Newman and Animal Rising associate Rose Patterson.
