Should you be worried that the iron from plant based foods isn't absorbed as well as the iron from red meat?As vegans, we're often told that we should be eating red meat because heme iron is absorbed better than non heme iron. In today's podcast episode, I talk about why the fact that we absorb iron from meat better than vegan foods isn't necessarily a good thing, and can in fact lead to serious health complications. I also explain how dietary guidelines have actually already taken the lower absorption rates into consideration, and why everyone - even omnivores - are supposed to be getting most of their iron from vegan sources! Sometimes, you just need to hear the truth. Other times, you need inspiration from someone wise who has been down the same path. In this interview with Light, founder of Gentle World, you will get both the Truth and Inspiration. Please join me as I speak with this beautiful 53-year strong vegan and founder, with his wife Sun, of Gentle World (https://gentleworld.org/) . Gentle World is a 501(c)(3) educational organization whose core purpose is to help build a more peaceful society by educating the public about the reasons for being vegan, the benefits of vegan living, and how to go about making such a transition. Toward that end, Gentle World has served as a clearinghouse of information for over 50 years, helping people from all walks of life embrace a way of living that is in alignment with their values. In this inspiring discussion, Light shares why he and his wife, Sun, decided to become vegan back in 1970, when most people didn't even know what the word meant. He also talks about why they founded Gentle World, what he has learned in the past 50+ years of being vegan, and how he feels about the current state of the world and the progress that's been made since he first became vegan. Oh, and did I mention that Light is also the uncle of the late River and Joaquin Phoenix??? :-)

Today we're interviewing Helen Gi, Founder of HAE Creative, a mission-driven consultant agency that helps a ton of plant-based brands understand South Korea. HAE stands for Human Health Animal Liberation and Environmental Sustainability We do this in a district in Korea called Itaewon! Itaewon is crazy, it's this unique, sloping melting pot of so many different cultures and vanity. My friend and I found a bar crawl there and we were surprised how many foreigners showed up. Helen is such a helpful and giving person who has great insights on the Korean vegan community and has worked in a variety of industries throughout her life. She is eloquent and so community driven and has a lot of heart in what she does and it shows in the interview. Since Helen collaborates with other food tech players globally, You'll also get a better understanding on how the Korean market works. It's a great testbed for innovation. You'll also get a good feel on the values and views of entrepreneurship in Korea. I find this topic fascinating as you realize that culture is a big part of being an entrepreneur. In America, we are really gung ho about entrepreneurship. We also have a lot of data, research, talent and drive in America compared to most countries. What I've found most inspiring about South Korea's food tech community is that it's carried by some fantastic individuals who really care about the future they create. Perhaps one can say that all great things start with someone who will stop at nothing to make a difference in the world.

We both have observed how within and outside our own Vegan Community, a lot of blaming & shaming is happening. It's proven that a mind shuts down when being put under attack. Animals and also Humans either react to an “attack” with fight, flight or freeze. Neither of those states allow the mind to be open & receive new information. Many of us Activist, bring our own emotions into our debates and that closes down the possibility for our opposite to understand the actual reason for our Activism.

Today I am talking to you about a topic I am very passionate about and that is food shaming within the vegan community. I find far too often everyone is too quick to critique and judge vegans but we get it even worse from other vegans. I feel this topic is important to talk about and why it may be detrimental to the spreading of veganism. It is something I have experienced as an online content creator and food blogger. I think this is something that needs to be identified as a problem and something that is important to discuss. No matter what type of vegan diet you decide to eat, no one has the right to shame you on your choices. Is it a deliberate culture clash with the Vegan Community, a naive and neanderthal chest-beating F’ you to sustainability, animals, and human health, or just an excuse to eat the foods we like? Or, is there something to it? Dr. Paul Saladino combined with a burgeoning cohort of respectable doctors, scientists, anthropologists and nutritionists thinks there is. And it’s not just the academics - there is an expanding community of tens of thousands of every day people that were once sick, overweight and dealt the death blow of autoimmune and chronic disease who are thriving! What gives?! Be prepared to be blown away! Dr Paul Saladino attempts to shatter the nutritional paradigms on optimal health, meat, plant-based nutrition and our evolutionary biological preference to thrive. Paul believes, backed up with with encyclopaedic knowledge and tons of scientific facts, that Humans are actually FACULTATIVE CARNIVORES. That we evolved to be the number one species on the planet due to a Carnivorous diet feeding our explosive brain development, and that our body and biology leaves many clues that we’ve adapted to be carnivores who in times of desperation and starvation could tolerate low doses of plant-based foods.   WHAT!?!?! BIG super important topic. As a result, this 2h convo is broken into two parts. Here’s what you can expect to hear across both:   P.S. They started their business in January of 2018 and look forward to continuing to grow their business and awareness to their cause. They both have been Vegans for a few years now and explain that the "Vegan Lifestyle", is commonly misinterpreted as a "diet" but want everyone to know that it's truly a lifestyle. In the vegan community there's a lot of questions and a LOT of infighting. What do these two have to do with each other? One explanation, Echo Chambers. We're constantly fed information online that matches our very specific beliefs, leading us to believe our beliefs are with the majority whether they are or not. When reality doesn't match our perceived majority beliefs we don't know what to do.
