Now, Youth Climate Save boasts more than 70 chapters in places as far away as India and the U.K. Its members hold weekly Zoom meetings to plan fundraising and other actions youth can take online, as well as an upcoming vegan support group. A sense of urgency animates Butler, who cites research on how a shift to veganism can fight climate change. “That's basically what I've been focusing on, just talking about how if we don't start going vegan, we're not going to have a planet,” she says with sobering, wide-eyed earnestness. At age ten, Genesis became the youngest ever TedX speaker when she gave her inspiring talk on healing the planet through vegan eating. Now, she continues to advocate for animals through speaking engagements, social media, and has even started her own foundation called Genesis For Animals. Plus, she was this year's winner of the Lisa Shapiro Young Animal Activist Award, presented to her by Compassion Over Killing's Erica Meier! “It's kind of like light… you flick a light switch on in the room and when you flip that switch, what you want is the experience of a lit room. You're not thinking about whether it comes from renewable energy or fossil fuels. You just want light. Well, I think most people just want meat. They don't care if animals are slaughtered. In fact, they probably would prefer that they not be slaughtered for it.” – Paul Shapiro Paul is the founder and CEO of the Better Meat Co., an alternative protein company that is replacing animals in our food supply. He's also the author of, Clean Meat: How Growing Meat Without Animals Will Revolutionize Dinner and the World. Paul spent the first two-plus decades of his career in animal protection. First, he founded and ran the animal protection organization, Compassion Over Killing, which is now called Animal Outlook, and then he spent 13 years at the Humane Society of the United States, working to give farmed animals better lives. He changed laws and the world for massive amounts of animals across this county. And then he had a realization… that food technology would save far more lives than anything else possibly ever could.

Josh Balk is Vice President of Farm Animal Protection for the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS). What happens when a 15-year-old boy watches a video on how farm animals are treated, caged, and butchered? Well, if they are anything like our guest today, Josh Balk, they go undercover at slaughterhouses and gather audio and video evidence to stop the inhumane and barbaric practices of the industry. They channel their passion for animal advocacy and partner with a childhood friend to create JUST, one of the most popular plant-based food companies in the world. In this podcast episode, we’ll get a glimpse of Josh’s childhood, which was a combination of 2 passions – animals and baseball. He had big dreams of becoming a professional baseball player, but at the same time, he had big dreams about fighting for animal rights. We’ll learn about Josh’s early work with Compassion Over Killing, as well as his current work with the Humane Society in the US where he lives and breathes his vegan advocacy. We’ll talk about how Josh is helping connect plant-based companies with venture-capitalists and assisting plant-based restaurant startups. We’ll also share the story of how Josh co-founded JUST, the revolutionary company that is helping to take plant-based foods mainstream. A man that looks up to Abraham Lincoln for his resilience and focus, paired with empathy and kindness, is somebody we all can learn from.

In this episode, Kathy Stevens and Scott David discuss: The massive scale of Quality Pork Processors The program piloted by Quality Pork Processors that erases the maximum speed on the slaughter line...and the problems caused by such speed How hard animals fight for their lives How workers who must "keep the line moving" treat pigs who are too weak or injured to move Suggestions for individuals who want to work on behalf of animals Key Takeaways: The emphasis on speed at all slaughterhouses makes an already horrible experience for animals and workers far worse than it needs to be Downer animals -- those too weak to stand/move on their own -- are beaten and shocked so that the line can keep moving Slaughterhouse workers are victims, too, under enormous pressure from management to maintain a rate of speed that is not possible without grave consequences The suffering of billions of animals annually vanishes if we choose not to eat them “These animals are struggling, trying to get away however the can...but they're in a slaughterhouse: there's nowhere for them to go." – Scott David Connect with Scott David & COK:Twitter: @TryVeg & @SDUndercoverFacebook: Compassion Over KillingWebsite: COK.net & TryVeg.comYouTube: tryvegPinterest: Compassion Over KillingInstagram: @compassion_over_killing Connect with Kathy Stevens:Facebook: facebook.com/kathy.stevens.CAS, facebook.com/catskillanimalsanctuaryTwitter: twitter.com/CASanctuary/Books: https://store.casanctuary.org/collections/books/products/where-the-blind-horse-singsWebsite: Catskill Animal SanctuaryInstagram: instagram.com/catskill_animal_sanctuary/YouTube: www.youtube.com/user/CASanctuary
In this episode, Kathy Stevens and Scott David discuss: Scott’s drive and willingness to take risks to do good for animals His work in 3 slaughterhouses as an undercover investigator The conditions of slaughterhouses for the human workers The lawsuit Compassion Over Killing filed between Superior Farms and the USDA Key Takeaways: Slaughterhouses value speed over everything else – it is factory farming There are horrifying consequences of that speed for animals and humans There is no such thing as “humane slaughter” The COK legal victory over Superior Farms sends an important message to the industry “For all the stuff we do, the changes we make, we still need to continue doing undercover investigations. We are always looking towards the future, trying to see which sorts of places we should check out and remind people of what we have already shown them." – Scott David Connect with Scott David & CKO: Twitter: @TryVeg & @SDUndercover Facebook: Compassion Over Killing Website: COK.net YouTube: tryveg Pinterest: Compassion Over Killing Instagram: @compassion_over_killing Connect with Kathy Stevens: Facebook: facebook.com/kathy.stevens.CAS, facebook.com/catskillanimalsanctuary Twitter: twitter.com/CASanctuary/ Books: https://store.casanctuary.org/collections/books/products/where-the-blind-horse-sings Website: Catskill Animal Sanctuary Instagram: instagram.com/catskill_animal_sanctuary/ YouTube: www.youtube.com/user/CASanctuary

Mike Wolf spent four years working undercover on factory farms. He has seen thousands of animals living in deplorable conditions and witnessed abuse that I think few of us can even imagine. He’s now Director of Investigations for the animal protection organization, Compassion Over Killing. Mike has led investigative efforts into meat, dairy, and egg facilities. He has overseen multiple investigations that have gone viral, sparking a national conversation about the treatment of farmed animals, and ultimately, impacting meaningful change. Among the investigative efforts Mike has led are a 2015 investigation into Hormel supplier Quality Pork Processors, exposing the dangers of a cruel USDA high-speed slaughter pilot program; and a 2016 Tyson Foods investigation that offered the first hidden-camera look inside broiler breeder factory farms and provided hard-hitting evidence that drove unprecedented trials and convictions for cruelty to chickens. Mike also has a strong passion for vegan fitness, and hopes to show how easy it is to gain vegan muscle as a member of PlantBuilt’s Powerlifting team. Since Mike and I met at his home in Arizona this spring, Compassion Over Killing has released another investigation. This time it was Martin Farms, a dairy farm in Pennsylvania that is a supplier for Nestle. The footage that they released is shocking to say the least. It’s absolutely horrific and extremely difficult to watch but I beg you – watch it. Share it. It's the only way that change happens. As hard is it is for us to sit through and watch these videos – think about the animals that are actually living through this. Watch the video.

Campaign Victory: BOCA Confirms Most of Its Products are Now Vegan! Compassion Over Killing is excited to share this breaking news update about our campaign to persuade BOCA Foods to ditch dairy. Over the past few months, the company has eliminated all but 4 items with dairy. That means 8 of BOCA's 12 products are now completely vegan! BOCA Brand Manager Eric Palmer confirmed in a statement to COK: “At BOCA, we understand there are consumers who follow a vegan lifestyle or who otherwise avoid dairy. The majority of BOCA's products are now vegan, and we'll continue to explore opportunities to expand those vegan offerings.” This encouraging shift towards more vegan options comes on the heals of COK's efforts to ensure the company is aware of the growing demand for plant-based choices.

By the time you’re old, the idea of eating a burger that was sliced off the body of a dead cow may seem as antiquated as using a whale’s fat to light your home. That’s the hope of Paul Shapiro, whose new bestselling book, Clean Meat: How Growing Meat Without Animals Will Revolutionize Dinner and the World, is a wild dive into the scientific and moral promise of lab-grown meat. Will vegans be chomping on burgers? Will chickens no longer have brains? Paul is the founder of Compassion Over Killing and the former VP & Spokesperson of the Humane Society of the United States. “We shall escape the absurdity of growing a whole chicken in order to eat the breast or wing, by growing these parts separately under a suitable medium.”Winston Churchill Unbeknownst to most, animal agriculture is the number one culprit when it comes to almost every single man-made environmental ill on the planet.Untenable amounts of land, water and feed are required to raise the number of animals necessary to meet demand. Creating more greenhouse gas emissions than the entire transportation sector combined, our voracious appetite for meat and dairy products has produced the largest mass species extinction since the disappearance of the dinosaurs. Meanwhile, the primary driver of ocean acidification, water table pollution, rainforest devastation and a litany of other environmental abominations can be tracked to one primary source: our broken system of food production.Without a doubt, it's a system that's destroying human health, irreparably damaging the planet we call home and creating unspeakable suffering in the process. If we want to survive as a species, we need a new way forward. In my opinion, adopting a plant-based is the single most powerful and impactful thing you can possibly do as a conscious, compassionate consumer. It is the medicine that will prevent and reverse chronic lifestyle disease, preserve our planet's precious resources for future generations, and put an end to mass animal cruelty.Vegan has indeed gone mainstream. That's awesome. But let's not be naïve. The rate at which people are adopting a plant-based lifestyle can't begin to match population growth and its concomitant demand for cheeseburgers and milk shakes.7.5 billion people currently share this spinning blue planet we call Earth. By 2050, that number will escalate to 9.7 billion. By 2100? 11 billion. How can we possibly feed 11 billion people sustainably?Ask my good friend Paul Shapiro, and he will give you a two-word answer:Clean meat. When Paul — a long-time vegan and mainstream voice for agricultural sustainability — took his first bite of “lab-harvested” meat in 2014, more humans had gone into space than had eaten real meat grown outside an animal. But according to Paul, the clean meat revolution is upon us — and it holds the potential to save the world.Just as we need clean energy to compete with fossil fuels, clean meat is poised to become a competitor of factory farms. Clean meat isn’t an alternative to meat; it’s real, actual meat grown (or more accurately, brewed) from animal cells, as well as other clean animal products that ditch animal cells altogether and are simply built from the molecule up.Today we talk about it.In addition to being among the worldʼs first clean meat consumers, Paul served as the vice president of policy engagement for the Humane Society of the United States, the worldʼs largest animal protection organization. Paul is also the founder of Compassion Over Killing, a TEDx speaker, and an inductee into the Animal Rights Hall of Fame.Paul just released his first book, Clean Meat:How Growing Meat Without Animals Will Revolutionize Dinner and the World*, a Washington Post bestseller (with a great foreword by Sapiens* author Yuval Noah Harari) that chronicles the wild race to create and commercialize cleaner, safer, See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
At age 23, I was overweight, drinking too much and smoking constantly. I was stuck in life and wanted a new one, so I finally got up the courage to attend a 10-day meditation retreat just before my 24th birthday. I'd booked and canceled the same retreat once before, and it was a big deal for me to get on the bus from New York City out to rural New Jersey to do nothing... ... But it turns out, it led to a big turning point in my life. Many changes I experienced were subtle and played out over months or even years, but one change happened instantly. I stopped eating animal foods. During the retreat, they didn't serve any meat, so I just kept up with it afterwards, and I felt great. I started reading books and going to lectures. Back then, most of the smart people in nutrition all believed that a low fat, no-meat diet was the best way to go for health. So I was sold. Fast forward 15 years later, I'm still eating this way, but I'm no longer naive enough to think that just cutting burgers from your diet is going to fix your health (in fact, sometimes the opposite is true). But I am absolutely certain that the way we eat today is not the way my grandkids will eat. Our foods system is beyond broken, it's a total disaster. Enter: lab-grown meats. Just like it sounds, this is fish, chicken, and burgers grown from cloned and cultivated cells. It might sound gross, but it also might save the planet. My guest on this week's show just wrote a book about this next revolution in food, CLEAN MEAT. ------------ Listen & Learn: How clean meat is safer than factor foods How clean meat, like clean energy, is way better for the environment Why many foods we eat today are weird if you stop to think about it—so why not this? Why the future of food is probably a lot less convenient than chickens, pigs, cows, corn, rice, wheat and soy ABOUT OUR GUEST Paul Shapiro served for 13 years as a spokesperson and vice president for the Humane Society of the United States. He is the founder of Compassion Over Killing, a TEDx speaker, and an inductee into the Animal Rights Hall of Fame. His first book, Clean Meat, is available on Amazon. In today’s episode of The Plant Trainers Podcast we talk to Scott David, a retired undercover investigator for Compassion Over Killing. That’s right, Scott is like a real life livestock James Bond! We discuss the whole process of how he actually went undercover, to what he did and saw while under employment in various slaughterhouses around the country. Scott also shares how he uses the footage to exploit the cruel practices that he witnesses. Scott began cutting animal products out of his diet in 2010. After getting his master’s degree in Applied Ecology, he joined an after school education program where he taught students about animals and the environment. He then worked for two years as an undercover investigator for Compassion Over Killing. During this time, he conducted investigations in three different slaughterhouses: Mountaire Farms in North Carolina, Quality Pork Processors in Minnesota, and Superior Farms in California. Now retired from the field, Scott spends his time offering support to Compassion Over Killing’s current investigators. In this episode we discuss: Compassion Over Killing Getting into animal protection Applying for a job in a slaughterhouse Who’s applying for these jobs Fitting in Being scared of being found out What’s really happening to the animals What legislation is in place to protect the animals in the slaughterhouses Who’s really responsible for the abuse How does it affect workers psychologically What happens with the information in the investigations His biggest successes Ag-gag laws Quality of meat and cutting corners Pork slaughter facility, investigation and Himp Actionable tips for helping fight against animal agriculture cruelty Links to things we mentioned: Thank you to today’s sponsor –> – , , , , , , , WARNING – GRAPHIC CONTENT IN THESE VIDEOS: Compassion Over Killing Thank you to this month’s Patrons for supporting us on : “Joe” Millie Pearson Stu Dolnick Mary Lou Fusi Carmen Fanous Emily Iaconelli Spanish Armada Don’t forget to contact us at with your question for our Plant Trainers Facebook Lives!
