This series honors those whose courage and conviction formed the soul of our tradition. They were not perfect, but they were faithful: to truth, to love, and to the possibility of a better world. In honoring these ancestors of faith, we ask: What do we inherit from them? What do we carry forward? We begin with the 4th-century Unitarians who challenged the prevailing Trinitarian view of Jesus, asking whether their bold theological ideas still speak to us today. We move to the 19th-century Transcendentalists, whose vision of the “transient” and the “permanent” in religion continues to offer clarity and guidance. We then honor those in our movement who have defied oppressive systems, reminding us that civil disobedience can be both effective and deeply faithful. Finally, we turn to the humanist voices in our history, exploring what their insights offer for a life of meaning and purpose now. First Unitarian Church of Dallas is devoted to genuine inclusion, depth and joy, reason and spirit. We have been a voice of progressive religion in Dallas since 1899, working toward a more just and compassionate world in all of what we do. We hope that when you come here your life is made more whole through experiences of love and service, spiritual growth, and an open exploration of the divine. Clark Carlton is back on the show this week to discuss a topic that is VERY MUCH needed right now. Many of us saw Texas Senator Ted Cruz make a complete fool of himself in his recent interview with Tucker Carlson. He stated that he believes that the "Israel" mentioned in the Book of Genesis is the same as the current State of Israel which was founded in 1948. Unfortunately, there are many folks who still believe this sort of thing and it's partially because they've been taught bad theology for years. It is worse when politicians have such bad Biblical understanding that they want their poor understanding to also inform their views on foreign policy. Luckily, there are wise men like Dr Carlton who can simply and articulately explain what is meant when we speak of the Israel of the Bible. Clark Carlton is an author and editor of the Ludwell Orthodox Fellowship. He has also taught philosophy for more than twenty-five years. A native of Tennessee, he earned a B.A. in philosophy from Carson-Newman College, an M.Div. from St. Vladimir's Seminary, and an M.A. and Ph.D. from the Catholic University of America. He is the author of "The Faith" Series and has been published in the Saint Vladimir's Theological Quarterly, the Journal of Early Christian Studies, Christian Bioethics, and Histoire de la Littérature Grecque Chrétienne des Origines à 451. Today, Pastor Darth will conclude the Foundations of Faith series as we look at God's plans for the future.
Today, Pastor Darth will be teaching on two of our foundational beliefs, “The Ministry” & “Divine Healing.” At the conclusion of the service we will have a special time of prayer for healing needs.
Today Keith Kidwell will be sharing about our 8th core belief, and how we believe in “The Church and its Mission.”
If you listen to this podcast, I know you're the kind of woman who wants to dig into her faith more deeply. I want to more-systematically help you do that! I've been working on a brand-new project called the “Legacy of Faith” series. Over the next several episodes, we are going to walk through the life of a woman of faith womb to tomb. Walking out faith is compared in the New Testament as a race. We would never dream of waking up one morning and just going to run a marathon. We would learn about what it takes to train effectively and learn from people who've already runraces. Then we would begin to change our habits, no matter where we were on the “couch to marathon” spectrum. That's what I want to do together the next few weeks. Let's hear from a variety of believers both men and women atdifferent ages and stages to see how they are running the race. I believe this will help strengthen our faith even if their stage is different from our own. This will help us walk out the gospel more effectively. So invite a Christian sister to join you and let's dig in.
Today we are studying what it means to be sanctified, and the process of being set apart and made holy by God. We will also be looking at this transformational work in our lives as followers of Jesus.
Send us a textFaith doesn't have to be a mystery! In this first message of our new sermon series "By Faith," we explore Hebrews 11 to uncover the key to living by faith. Is faith just a blind leap, or can we truly understand and grow in it?
Today, we are exploring our core belief in The Baptism of the Holy Spirit by walking through foundational accounts in the Book of Acts. We will discuss what it is, why it is important, and how we receive it. Our prayer today is “Come, Holy Spirit.”
Stepping out in faith often brings anxious feelings as we prepare ourselves for the "big leap." But laughter? That's not usually what we associate with a “leap of faith.” The story of Abraham and Sarah is one of how unbelief transforms into belief, and how bitter laughter gives way to laughter filled with wonder and joy. Faith is a runway to hopeful living—the kind that impacts our hearts and emotions even before it changes our circumstances. So, it's okay to laugh! First time listening to our podcast? We've been journeying through our foundational core beliefs over the last month. Today we'll be taking a deeper look at the ordinances of the church, which are baptism and communion.
Faith is living out what you believe. Growing in understanding? Yes, that's where it starts. Developing a conviction? Yes, that's the place where understanding becomes Belief. Still, there will come a point, where despite uncertainty, we step out. We call that moment “faith.” These moments are memorable because they're often terrifying. Can faith grow? Yes! Here's how. Today we will explore the next two core beliefs that make up our spiritual foundation.
Who is Jesus? There are many opinions about the answer to this question. Today we will study our 3rd foundational belief, the Deity of Jesus.
Today Pastor Darth continues with part two of our teaching series based on our 16 core doctrinal beliefs.
Today we are launching our second ILV book club with a series of discussions of Jonathan Rauch's forthcoming book entitled Cross Purposes: Christianity's Broken Bargain with Democracy by Brookings Institution senior fellow and best-selling author Jonathan Rauch. The book, made available to you by Yale University Press in early February, examines American pluralism and the role of religion in historical and modern democracy. Rauch, a self-described atheist, somewhat apologetically takes us on a journalistic and self-reflective tour of the intersection of religion and human nature. This book is a cultural, civic, and spiritual travel-log for believers and non-believers alike. Jonathan Rauch will join us for a livestream on February 5 at 7pm ET. In the meantime, join Jen, Elizabeth and Matt for 3 book club episodes focused on Cross Purposes. We begin our discussion with Part I, which is entitled “Thin Christianity.” Podcast Resources: Pre-order Cross Purposes Save the date for our livestream with Jonathan Rauch (both on YouTube and on @ilvalues on X) Jesus and Superman: A Liberalism and Faith Series with Angel Eduardo How Intellectuals Found God, Peter Savodnik, The Free Press The Kingdom, the Power, and the Glory: American Evangelicals in an Age of Extremism, Tim Alberta Walking with God through Pain and Suffering, Tim Keller Tribe: On Homecoming and Belonging, Sebastian Junger On Censorship Book Club
Today we begin a new teaching series based on our doctrinal beliefs as part of the Assemblies of God. This study will help us better understand what we believe, why it matters, and how it applies to us today.
In this week's podcast, Jennifer Richmond and Angel Eduardo launch a new series on faith and liberalism. They spent some time wrestling with where to begin with such a weighty topic, when they finally landed on simply sharing their own personal faith journeys. They embark on this discussion with curiosity and humility, neither trying to convert, correct or proselytize, but simply in exploration of the origins of their common humanity and shared values. We invite others to join in the conversation with suggestions and questions in the comments, which we will address in upcoming episodes. We will be inviting other guests to join us and look forward to further conversations on the complexities of faith, liberalism and the intersection of both in search of a strategy for human flourishing.
