Episode #210. Hey friends, Welcome back to a special episode. Dr. Robert C. Smith has been helping people for many years and in his upcoming book he has a lot to say about the healthcare system in America. I was so honored to speak with him about his wisdom and insights into why many doctors are not trained in how to help those with mental health challenges. We get into what the problem is and some ideas on how we can fix it. Dr. Robert C. Smith BIO: Robert C. Smith, MD, MACP is a University Distinguished Professor and a Professor of Medicine and Psychiatry Emeritus at Michigan State University, East Lansing, MI, USA. With many publications, awards, and strong grant support, he has been involved in teaching and research in patient-centered communication and in primary care mental health since 1985. He and his colleagues defined the first evidence-based patient-centered interview, now published in a popular interviewing textbook, Smith's Patient-Centered Interviewing: An Evidence-Based Method (4th edition, McGraw Hill, 2018). It is used in medical, nursing, and other health care schools in the USA and abroad for teaching interviewing and the doctor-patient relationship. Dr. Smith's group also identified the first evidence-based method, the Mental Health Care Model, to guide primary care clinicians in managing mental health and substance use problems. Essentials of Psychiatry in Primary Care: Behavioral Health in the Medical Setting (McGraw Hill 2019)resulted and is widely used to teach primary care mental health. Dr. Smith's next book is for the public: Has Medicine Lost Its Mind? will be published by Prometheus Books in March 2025. It addresses the poor state of mental health care in the US, why it occurred, what needs to be done, and how to accomplish this politically. Episode #204. Reflecting on a subject matter I have discussed on here before. My relationship to medications and how I see it in a loop that cannot be escaped. The more I entertain it the more it turns to blame. Sitting in blame for days and weeks and months then removes responsibility from my life and my recovery. I keep thinking the grass is greener on the other side but that other side never takes place because it would cost to much to get there( that is me writing this and not saying the cost part). Do you agree with this? Do you struggle with the same thing? Do you think alternative ways of treatment and coping skills would be valuable for you to learn? These are tough and complicated conversations. Let me know your feedback on this episode. Email me: jared.diehl@gmail.com, or find me on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jareddiehl8/?hl=en I am working on getting my website up and running again. Apologies for the inconvencience.

Episode #192. I so loved this talk with Michelle because she has a very clear and profound message around the narrative related to the mental health care system and the language around the bipolar diagnosis. Since over the summer of 2023 I have been moving in a new direction with Louder Now and I have been using the language around healing which is something Michelle has been saying to. She is a excellent communicator and I highly suggest you check out her resources on her website related to healing your bipolar. Thank you Michelle for being a guest! Michelle's BIO: Having been diagnosed with bipolar in 1998, Michelle spent the next 12 years on a roller coaster of manic and depressive episodes with therapists, doctors, psychotropic meds, hospitalizations, and suicide attempts. She was at her wit's end and felt humiliated, hopeless and lost. In particular, she was devastated by the toll it took on her family-her husband and small children. Finally, she and her psychiatrist found a solution that became a turning point in her story. She began the process of developing an integrated method for understanding this devastating disorder and successfully treating it. Michelle advocates for a radical shift in the treatment of bipolar to facilitate healing and recovery. She is all about accepting responsibility for yourself and overcoming the victimhood mentality that so often accompanies bipolar disorder. She teaches an integrated, research-based treatment model that addresses the underlying causes of bipolar symptoms and allows people to heal. What do you think of when you look in the mirror? How the body impacts diagnosis and healing. Thoughts on continuing to talk about how medicine treats symptoms but to get to how we feel in our body and what we think of our bodies..this a huge missing component in these conversations around diagnosis. https://loudernowpodcast.com/episodes/ https://loudernowpodcast.com/donate/ https://www.instagram.com/jareddiehl8/
This is a special and unique episode. I get into some work with my friend Rimsha. We explore some childhood fears and I'm all for it! I hope it gives you hope that you can do this work to. These are the kinds of conversations that we need. BIO: I am a Shamana, Medicine Woman and a healer (who is also behind the scenes on a deep childhood sexual trauma healing journey). I was born and raised in Pakistan and moved to the US when i was 14. My spiritual awakening (or as I like to call wounds awakening) happened when I one day woke up, listened to the spirit that was loud and clear and moved to Nepal as a young 17 year old. This is where my healing began. I have traveled to over 28 countries to search for "Me". And during the period, I got lost in the masculine world first as an aerospace engineer then as a US Marine Officer until my nervous system completely fried and i was forced to face those wounds that i first discovered as a young woman in Nepal. I have known deep pain yet in that pain, I also learned to alchemize them to be a spiritual guide. I deeply care for the awakening of the collective so we stop going to war with each others nation and stop going to war with ourselves and to remember that we are the God's consciousness living a human experience. We CAN in fact live a beautiful, prosperous, heck even luxurious life even as a spiritual guide. https://www.instagram.com/rimshawarda/ https://www.instagram.com/aherstorypodcast/ https://loudernowpodcast.com/episodes/ https://loudernowpodcast.com/donate/

Episode #167. Solo episode. Been thinking about how when we repeat ideas and phrases we think its more true to recycle and repeat. When we get a diagnosis we are tempted to repeat and normalize the symptoms instead of changing the story we say about ourselves. What is the truth of what we are going through and who are we? Episode #165. I met Isaiah back in May of 2023 and we connected over talking about mental health. It is a huge honor to talk to him on the podcast and we decided that this would be part one. I look forward to having him on again in the future. Isaiah's BIO and show description: Isaiah expresses his experiences with severe anxiety that seemed to develop early on in my teens (from marijuana induced panic attacks), discusses the topic of whether we are determined to suffer by God (for a reason) or is this something that is just a bad draw of the hand (due to genetics or the era we're in). Other questions we discuss are “what does it mean to be healed? And how does one define it?” We discuss his progression from bad to “better” and extreme to “managing” over the last 4 years with all sorts of symptoms. But no matter what hardships one goes through, he believes we must stay optimistic and keep going and working towards a better clarity of mental peace. Now that he's officially part of ‘the club', he feels connecting with others that are struggling with their mental health provides him with a bit of comfort in knowing that he's not alone and don't need to feel as alone even though this is an individual battle amongst our-selves. He's grateful to be a part of this podcast and community. Isaiah Aragon is a Financial Analyst at Southern California Edison and is a father of a wonderful little girl that gives him meaning and motivation to persist through times of struggle. Episode #164. Solo show. Thoughts and ideas around the Permanence of mental disorder. Is the treatment the reason something lasts a long time. I don't like the idea of saying something will last forever. I am open to feedback? Does saying something will last a long time the same as acceptance and does acceptance mean you just take medication. It is obviously a complicated subject matter because people can get into a real predicament when it comes to mental health. If you lose sleep for any numbers of days or have panic attacks you seek immediate relief and there is no shame in that. However, a lot of social media promotes this idea that the diagnosis will last the rest of your life. It doesn't seem right but I see why people say this. I am not presenting any answers at this time. I am going into new territory and I would like to keep this conversaion going. Episode #162. A fun faith filled talk with Alex Ann. I met Alex in front of Target in Pomona and it was great getting to hear more of her journey with God and life and some struggles with depression. We get into a great talk. I hope you enjoy! Alex's BIO: In the picturesque city of Riverside, California, Alex Ann's journey began as a curious soul, eager to unravel the mysteries of life. Her Christian upbringing nurtured a profound faith that would later become the foundation of her entire existence. Little did she know that her path would lead her on an extraordinary odyssey, ultimately discovering what she had known all along. As the years passed, she found herself entangled in the intricate dance of life's challenges and triumphs. In the depths of her darkest hours, when despair gnawed at her heart and thoughts of ending the pain consumed her, she discovered a lifeline. The divine grace of God reached out, pulling her from the abyss of hopelessness and despair. His love wrapped around her like a comforting embrace, guiding her toward a path of hope, healing, and purpose. Motivated by compassion, she embarked on a mission beyond the boundaries of self. "Sweater and Souls" was born, a non-profit endeavor that sought to clothe those shivering in the bitter cold with the warmth of not only tangible sweaters but the comforting warmth of the Gospel. In the pages of her upcoming book, "Author of Peace," Alex Ann lays bare the moments that etched her identity and the struggles that rigorously tested her faith. Within these lines, she exposes the profound peace that she found in the loving embrace of the Author of Peace Himself—God.
