Do you feel like you can't take a break from work? Like if you left the whole place would stop altogether? Do you have high turnover in your volunteers or employees? Do you have a hard time meeting metrics or feeling successful? Or do only one or two people pull their weight? If this is you then you could be “leading solo”. “Leading solo” is when a leader has a team but doesn't trust them to carry out their jobs, so they end up doing everything themselves or they micromanage people. You often feel like you are the only one who “gets it” or even makes any progress to your goals. In todays episode we talk about symptoms of leading solo and how probelms with your mission might be the reason you are not getting your team to engage with you in meeting your goals. In this Leadership Rewind episode, I talk with Barbara Carneiro about how to set goals from a mindset of doing less not more. Barbara shares some of her best tips, such as creating manageable routines instead of chasing the elusive idea of balance, doing less instead of more, and getting outside help instead of trying to do everything herself. Do you have a message you want to share? Is there something on your heart you feel people need to hear? Or do you manage a team and need to make sure your initiatives are communicated well and efficiently put into motion? You may even have a new idea you want to present to your leaders. In this episode, I provide practical tips that help you think through your message and how to convey it more successfully. Using the acronym CARS, we will give you some questions to ask yourself as you craft your message to share with the world. We want to help you intentionally think through how you are conveying your message for the best outcome possible. Clarity What do I want to say? What is my goal for this communication? What do I want someone to do as a result of receiving this information? Audience Who am I speaking to? What is their level of understanding of this topic? What kind of context do I need to provide to them for this information to make sense? Relevance Why does this matter to the person reading or hearing this info? So what? Simplify Can you take what you want to communicate and simplify it? What can you edit down to make it clearer, to speak to your intended audience more effectively? Have you made sure there's a ‘so what' to the information? Your Next Steps: Getting your message across effectively is key for any leader. By using this CARS acronym, you'll see a big difference in how your communication is received. Remember, practice makes perfect, so keep these tips in mind and watch your impact grow. Is it really necessary to reflect before setting your goals for the year or the next season or phase of your life? Why does it matter, and does it impact whether your goals are effective? The difference between who we say we are and how we actually live impacts not just us personally, but also everyone we lead. But how can we learn to identify this gap and begin shrinking it? In this replay of episode 121 of the CWLP, Holly and I talk with our guest Terra Mattson, about this issue, which she calls an integrity gap. We dive into what this means, common symptoms of an integrity gap, and how to start closing this gap. In addition, Terra sheds light on why unresolved trauma is common in leaders and what leaders need to do about it. We also discuss with Terra whether we should address integrity gaps when we see them in other people. Finally, we explore why speaking up is so important, even when it's risky and what it means to become a wholehearted leader. This is an important conversation for every leader, whether you are just getting started or whether you've been in leadership for years. In the past few weeks, our country has been reminded of the reality of racism. As Christian leaders, how should we as the church respond? And what can we do on an individual basis? While some of us may not be affected by or see racism on a regular basis, the issue was brought to light in a significant way in recent weeks due to the death of George Floyd (among other incidents). As I considered this issue, I knew this was something I wanted to address on this podcast. Yet I knew that I needed to invite someone who has the expertise to speak to this topic. In this episode, I'm talking with my friend Dr. Shannon Polk. Shannon shares her leadership journey and how she ended up as a lawyer, associate pastor, wife, and mother. Despite being encouraged in her leadership gifts for most of her childhood and young adult years, she still faced doubts about her gifts and leadership ability later in adulthood. Have you ever attended a live event and not known the best ways to prepare for the event, how best to engage while you were there, or debrief afterward? There's so much time and planning that goes into getting to a live event that sometimes we don't take the time to think through what we need to do before, during, and after the actual event takes place. If you're a listener of this podcast, you're likely a leader of some sort in some capacity. You likely like to attend events, learn new things, and grow and build new relationships. But sometimes we get back from those events and we just feel overwhelmed. We feel like there's so much that we took away from it, but we have no idea what to do with that information. Have you ever been either on the giving or receiving end of support in the midst of a crisis? Perhaps you've been the one in the middle of the crisis, and a friend showed up and loved you really well, or maybe you've been the friend to show up for someone else. What does it look like to show up and support our people well in the midst of tragedy? If you are a leader, one skill you will inevitably need at some point is how to support someone through crisis. You may need to support your teen through a friendship crisis, a friend through a marriage crisis, or a team member through a health crisis. Helping someone through a crisis is not necessarily something that comes naturally to all of us, and it's definitely not something that we are good at teaching in our culture. The good news is that even if it's not a natural gift that you have, it is a skill that can be developed. There are some guidelines and principles that can help you when you encounter a situation where you need to support someone else who is facing a crisis. Recently, when I was going through my own crisis, my amazing friend and co-host, Holly supported me in ways that I didn't even realize I needed, so episode 211 is an interview-style conversation we shared all about how to best support someone going through a crisis. It might be that you're on the verge of burning out. Or, you simply might not be getting the right type of rest. In episode 210, I will be re-sharing an episode that originally aired in 2020 with Dr. Saundra Dalton-Smith. We know not all of our listeners have listened to our backlog of episodes, and this one felt incredibly timely as it was such a great conversation about burnout, rest, and getting out of an urgency mindset. Do you ever feel like you don't measure up to the other women around you? Perhaps you've decided to wait on pursuing a particular goal or dream until you reach a particular weight loss goal? Or maybe you've been struggling with shame about something that happened in the past, and you feel like that has disqualified you from leadership or ministry. If you resonate with any of this, or work with women in any capacity, this episode is for you. Today we're chatting with our guest Rachael Gilbert. Rachael was a guest on episode 14 way back in the beginning of the podcast, and she's back with us again today. I know you're going to benefit from this conversation, and we cover a lot of ground, including how your core beliefs are connected to your confidence, what body image and the Fruit of the Spirit have to do with each other, and “big T” vs. “little t” trauma. What do you do if your company asks you to participate in activities that conflict with your values? How can you live out your faith in a secular workplace even if others hold different views? In today's conversation, you'll hear as Holly and I chat with our guest, Dr. Debra Dean. Debra shares her experience of how God called her to leave corporate after 25 years to start a ministry geared towards helping Christians authentically live out their faith. We discuss respectful pluralism and why it's important in the workplace, what to do when you experience conflicting values in your employment, and why it can be challenging for Christians to live out and discuss their faith. In addition, we dive into the need for civil discourse, discussing ‘hot topics' with friends, and how to discern if you're being called out of your corporate role into something different. I know you're going to love this conversation and it is sure to bring insights even if you don't find yourself working in a secular organization at this time! How often have you started out your year strong, with lots of excitement and a vision for the future, only to have completely forgotten about those ideas just a few months later? It doesn't matter whether you are a CEO of a large company, or you're a mom who homeschools and volunteers at your church, it can be tough to stay focused on what is truly important to you and to the things that God has called you to do. In episode 206, I walk through 6 strategies to stay focused on your visions as a Christian leader. No matter what time of year you're seeing this, think about how often you fizzle out of good habits you may have set when the New Year rolled around. There are so many distractions that life throws our way, in addition to the major crises that may come along throughout our year. So I'm sharing with you some of the strategies that I have used in my own life and leadership to stay focused, regardless of what my title, role, or responsibility may be. Do you ever struggle with how to share the truth of Scripture with people in a way that marries both truth and grace? Maybe you don't feel confident enough in your own theology to answer hard questions from others regarding your faith. Learning to effectively communicate with others in a way that draws people to Jesus instead of pushing them away from Jesus is such an essential part of evangelizing in a post-Christian culture. In this episode, you'll hear Holly and I chat with Bible teacher and business owner, Phylicia Masonheimer. You'll hear about the importance of sharing truth with others and what the key is to doing so in American culture, how to get to the root of what someone thinks or believes before you answer, and what should be offensive ( and what should not be) when we are sharing the Gospel. In addition, we dive into why Christians struggle to discuss theological differences, how to discern some of the “debatable” issues in our own lives, and what we as leaders need to consider in regards to what we teach and share. Have you ever felt like your voice is not heard at the leadership table, specifically in ministry settings? Do you ever question whether you are in a healthy situation or whether perhaps there are some issues that need to be addressed? If you've ever felt that way, or if you simply want to hear a powerful conversation about listening to God's voice, radical obedience, and speaking up for yourself as a female leader, you are in for a treat. In addition, we dive into the challenge that many women can relate to in leadership: insecurity and feeling as though their voice is not heard. Rachael shares how she has personally experienced this and how she's heard from women all over the world who have also dealt with this. Rachael dives into how she chose to respond to this issue and what God has taught her since. Is money connected to fulfilling your God-given purpose? How do you pursue your purpose without making money an idol? And is there such a thing as a non-woo version of manifestation that is okay for Christians to use? In this episode, you'll hear an engaging conversation between Holly and our guest, Portia Jackson. Portia is a Certified Financial Planner and owns her own business called Wealthy and Fulfilled. Portia shares her journey to the finance world from being a literal rocket scientist. She talks about the struggles of mothering a child with special needs and she also shares how her leadership journey opened up when she finally found her gifting and pressed into God's will for her life. Portia and Holly hit some pretty hard topics head-on in the episode. They talk about everything from race and African American female role models, to how the Enneagram can help us identify how we relate to money, and lastly they discuss the concept of Christ-centered manifestation. Do you ever struggle with your own confidence in your leadership role? Maybe you're plagued with self-doubt or imposter syndrome. Perhaps you've convinced yourself that you're not the one for the job. These fears and doubts can be so loud in our heads, but they are not the reality or the truth that God has called us to live in. Almost 4 years ago, I shared a podcast episode called “The Importance of Leading with Confidence.” In it, I shared my story of how I landed on the phrase ‘leading with confidence' for this podcast. We always say that this podcast is designed to help you “Embrace your gifts and lead with confidence.” In that episode, I shared with you some of the reasons I think confidence is important as well as my definition of leading with confidence, which is my confident leadership framework: love - live - lead. With that framework, we know that the source of our confidence is God's love, and once you know that you can live your life with purpose, and then you can step into leading others. It's been quite some time since that episode, so I wanted to revisit this conversation and bring you a slightly different take on this: What Confident Leaders Look Like. If you're ready to take it a step further and you want to dig deeper into how to become a confident leader, then be sure to check out my Confident Leader Catalyst course. Have you ever struggled to engage in conversations about hot topics online? Have you ever wondered how to stay humble in your theology while still holding onto the primary truths of the Gospel? In this episode, you'll learn about this and so much more. Episode 194's guest is the first official male guest: Joel Muddamalle, Director of Theology and research at Proverbs 31 Ministries. This episode follows Joel's leadership journey and how God led him to work in a predominantly female ministry, Proverbs 31 Ministries. We also discuss why we need to stay humble in our theology as leaders, how we can learn to see multiple sides of an issue, and what we should do when attempting to have conversations about theological differences. We will also hit on the issue of deconstruction and how this relates to our need as Christians to continually evaluate what we believe in light of the Truth of Scripture. Have you ever seen or heard a Christian in the public sphere do something you didn't agree with?
